      He’s of Russian decent, he grew up in Russian culture and speaks it proficiently, it’s been well documented why he’s reported in Russia, who btw absolutely didn’t need to invade Ukraine. Putin is on a mission for his Peter the great moment. Evans reporting was powerful and true and highlighted the disaster that is the Russian economy especially, THAT is why he was arrested.

      20,000 down from about 35,000 before the war. Only 14 of ours are in the cooler for various alleged offenses, we on the other hand have 103 of theirs.

      Griner was held for 10 months, sadly I think Evan will be held for the maximum pre trial detention limit of 18 months, journalism is not a crime and I do hope he’s able to be exchanged and released. It’s incredibly traumatic I’m sure.

      @@SoCalFreelance We know about the CIA interrogation techniques and all the associated dirt because our journalists reported about it AND JAGs and private attorneys and civil liberties groups (CCR) challenged the government in court and won some very high profile cases.
      I will add that this was done long before Julian Assange entered any discussion. The work of those challenging the US government’s detention of the accused illegal enemy combatants began in 2001.
      This sort of accountability doesn’t exist in Russia. This is hostage taking from a government that has criminalized dissent. There is no comparison.

    Well ....... Who knows. In my experience you typically have to at least do something to get arrested in Russia. That being said, if for some reason you get on someone's bad side, they can throw the book at you. For example Griner was guilty, but in better times they might have let her off easy. Americans should keep a low profile and keep their ducks in a row.
