This is the best review I've seen yet. I've been flip flopping between this one and high end LP for photography with editing saving to albums and sharing. Will use it for some emailing and Facebook. I'm really liking this 15" xps a lot more now after watching Ion in action on this one. Thanks for the great review. I'm sold on this one now.
was going to do a quick review on the wd duel drive nothing crazy Ive used it for a while so i am going to compare usability vs the new m.2 ssd i got for my laptop so not on performance but which one feels better while in use any tips its probably going to just be shot on my in built web cam or something like that because time is not something i have right now
woah, you're the first reviewer that mentions another RUclipsr that reviews tech, kudos. PS like that you're surrounded by desks, have you done a video of your set up?
Seems to me the cover must be tighter to move than the apple due to the touch screen. You want the screen solid when touching it.. I have the 1080 version. Running for 4 hours unplugged doing email, web surfing, some short videos, and clicking through multiple traffic web cams....I still read 57% power.. Yes, the track pad takes getting used to. Just a light touch rather than a press to click is needed. The audio is mediocre to me. I still have an XPS 14" about 6 years old...it has JBL stereo speakers mounted on the keyboard face and sounds like you are wearing headphones. I sole my MacBook Pro i7 15" and got this. So glad I did. Good review, thanks.
Hey Lon, you can disable the DPI scaling per app by right clicking on the app, go to properties, and under compatibility check "disable scaling on high DPI settings". This should let you keep scaling on without it breaking apps.
I have the new Dell xps 15 (early 2016) now as FHD-Version (with the Skylake i7 and 256 GB SSD) and am thrilled. Quit, fast, great Display, excellent trackpad an a super fine finish. Currently the best Laptop in the 15" class which can be bought for money
+Holger Dziekanski does the webcam at the bottom not bother you? I was considering purchasing it, but I was worried that the webcam was placed at the bottom. It's kinda in a awkward angle.
+Matt Carie Clear the Webcam in te Center as in the MBP would be better. But whenever I do not use the Webcam. So it does not bother me really. I have, for exemple, a new race Simulation (Assetto Corsa) now on the XPS and running sensational. Everything in the highest resolution and without any stuttering. The XPS 15 itself is still fairly quiet under load, that ist much more important for me.
Had the XPS 15 for a few months now and although I can't really fault the specs even with some slight upgrades I've added, I would WARN you that if you crack the glass it WILL cost you. I've just had to pay £600.00 (GBP) for a new display after just a digitizer breakage... BASICALLY get the accidental cover!!
I've been asking various reviewers this question, but have you had rattling issues with the speakers? The Microsoft store blamed it on a "bad batch," but we went through 4 units, and even after all the updates (drivers, BIOS, etc.), the speakers rattled at volumes above 30%.
Stan, I have a 1080 resolution model with SSD. Got it as refurbished (I love refers from the factory, generally). No rattle, buzz, or anything other than the sound of the speakers. I have had it up all the way at times and never got anything unusual.
Great video Lon! Are you planning to look at any of the USB C docks that work with this machine? I'm curious if the charging over a USB C dock is as fast as the AC adapter.
+Lon Seidman It looks like Dell actually makes a couple: (1) with the ability to drive to Full HD displays (accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=&cs=19&sku=450-AFGM&dgc=ST&cid=262076&lid=5644636&acd=123098073120560&ven1=sndYyBln4&ven2=,&ven3=260703189394505485), and (2) another that supports two 4K displays (accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=&cs=19&sku=450-AEVM&dgc=ST&cid=262076&lid=5644636&acd=123098073120560&ven1=sndYyBln4&ven2=,&ven3=260703189394505485). I've actually used Dell's D3100 USB 3 (type A) dock with an early 2015 XPS 13, and loved it. I was just curious if driving displays and charging actually worked as advertised with USB-C/Thunderbolt. Thanks again!
Thanks for the good video. I´m looking forward to buying exactly this model. But im not sure about scaling problems with the Adobe Creative Cloud and the 4k display. Can you post some different pictures of the PS, AI, or ID menue? It would be a nightmare if the menue/fonts were too small or not scalable ... Would you recommend this laptop espcially for editoring bigger files, cinema 4d, video editoring etc? Thanks a lot.
Nice job Lon!!...gotta get one but not at that price...refurbished model for me and even that is a fortune 1100-1300$.( if u wanna sell yours let me know) 😂
I love my refeferb. Got it from an Authorised seller on eBay for about $1300, 516 SSD,1080p with larger battery. It looks new. I love this computer and do minor video editing and a lot of streaming and surfing for work. I can safely get about 9 hrs doing that.
So now for the all important question: This machine or a 15 inch retina MacBook Pro? I'm on a 17 inch MacBook Pro from 2010. It's turning six in June. I plan on replacing it this summer. I'm Windows curious, but ... not so sure about switching. Been on a Mac since 2007-ish.
Hey have you review Dell xps 13? I want to hear your opinion on that. Whether I should get that or Razer blade stealth. I know they both have usb type c/Thunderbolt 3 which both support egpu. I know they have similar specs. Dell is more expensive but has that beautiful infinity edge display.
I really would love to know whether the 2017 XPS 15 9560 would work with your eGPU construction....I am thinking of getting this setup if it just works...
Hi! I'm looking for that pc. I saw in a few video that the PC case is a little bit bent in a long term usage and the PC shakes on the table. Did you notice that? Thank you!
+Anurag Acharya How is it working out for you in terms of everyday operations such as web surfing, gaming and running large programs like photoshop? I'm thinking about buying one of these with the exact same specs as you. Is it worth it?
Hey, Lon! I was just wondering. In your personal opinion, what is the best sub-300 dollar PC? Which is your favorite? I need one for school next year, and some advice would be great!
4K displays on Windows-based devices are not worth the price, both in terms of dollars and battery life. I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro at home with the 3K screen, and the DPI scaling is so broken that using it can be really frustrating at times. By contrast, the Retina MacBook Pro I use at work is an absolute pleasure because the OS and most of the applications are built to properly take advantage of the display. Also, the 1080p screen on my 17-inch gaming notebook is spot-on for its resolution, in addition to the fact that it's IPS, and I can overclock it past its 60Hz default. Side note - The XPS 15 has a 2 GB GPU while the Inspiron 7000's has 4 GB. It really should be the other way around, given that more video RAM can be helpful for driving ultra-high-resolution displays.
Hi. Bit of a technical question. Say I bought the 4K model and just configured it to 1080p would I get a better battery life? Or am I better of just buying the 1080p model? 4K right now is my only choice.
Changing resolution from 4k to FHD in windows will save some juice because the CPU/GPU process less pixels. But the 1080p model will save much battery because of the display panel and touchscreen module.
i have to buy a dell xps 15. dell has released new dell xps 13 in september 2016. what do you think, i have to wait or i have to buy it now? considering that in this day i will get the 12% off the price for the black friday. in other words, please help me!!!
i really don't understand the point of a 4k display on a laptop...the whole point of 4k on computers is 1. for gaming, but the 960m isn't NEARLY powerful enough to game at 4k 2. for the extra screen real estate, but at 15" you're going to have to use so much scaling that it's useless just seems like money that could've gone to better things
+Cod High PPI diplays look very nice , text looks better and everything look better, it's almost relaxing to the eyes. You can also choose the quantity of scaling you want to get extra real estate over a 1080p or 768p laptop while not making things extremely small (150% or 175% instead of 200%). It's also the same reason why we have 1440p and 4k displays on phones, maybe because xe can and it sells better, but because it makes pictures and text look better. I have a SP3 since almost a year, with a 12" 2160x1440 display with 150% scaling and the picture is so much better than a desktop 1440p display because of the high PPI. It may or may to be useful, but it's an nice extra that's noticeable enough for ppl to pay so much for them.
Great review! Quick question, did you update the drivers/bios before running your benchmarks? Also, I just got the xps 13 (the new one with 6th gen i5 and 3200x1800 screen) and was surprised that it couldn't run 4k videos via youtube in chrome at 4k. For example: ruclips.net/video/iNJdPyoqt8U/видео.html it runs this one fairly well but it still chops up occasionally. How does the i7 on this model handle it? I assume it should be able to play it without chopping up since mine is very close to doing it. I know some of it is due to chrome not using hardware rendering or something because it runs fine in edge at 4k. It's not a buffering problem either (100mbp/s internet). Thanks and keep up the great honest reviews!
+Lon Seidman 1 - at 4.30 you said for the left usb port as a usb 3.1 near to the sd carf reader which is not 2 - there are USB 3.0 and 3.1 and type c the USB 3.1 and Type c are very similar but the connector is deffirent and also type c is can be used to transfer more power therefore you can use it to charge the laptop you can see more at usb.org also en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_Type-C
Hey before i buy gta 5 on my laptop (which runs it) my mouse... Isnt a mouse its a smooth touchpad with no 2 rectangular button underneath. Can someone please tell me how to aim and shoot using the touchpad on a laptop?
Can you guys help me? Dell Xps 15 or Dell Inspiron 15? Xps specs:i7, 256 SSD, 8gb ram nvidia gtx 960m-2 gb, FHD Display Inspiron specs: i7,1tb SHHD(hybrid) 8gb ram, gtx 960m-4gb, 4k display. Im a Multimedia Student. so i want a laptop for multimedia editings/purposes, very light and portable, sturdy and a good investment for money. Im so torn between the two. what should I buy?
+Lyndon Jackson Yep. I bought the xps 15 over the inspiron, because I would mostly use my laptop for multimedia purposes(photo, video editting, etc) and a little bit of gaming. Xps is a great choice because of its portability than the bulky inspiron, the trackpad, the battery life iss good also, but the downside is the smaller storage. If youre mostly into games and rrlated stuff choose the inspiron because of its hybrid storage. Overall the XPS 15 is a great portable multimedia laptop mate. 😀
+Lyndon Jackson If youre too conscious about speed and reliabilty choose the ssd one. but I heard that the difference of speed between ssd and shhd is not a big deal. So if you want bigger memory than speed then choose the shhd. but you cant never go wrong with I7 bruv
They need to stop making laptop cam and mics. I agree with you, go and pick up an awesome cam and mic set up. They should save the consumer money to get rid of cams and mics, those are legacy useless components now. Including mechanical clicking trackpads.
Bought this computer thinking I was getting the greatest computer out there...WRONG! I am just letting anyone who has the XPS 15 to know that there is a defect with the monitor! Most of you wont notice it if you just watching movies or videos. But after a while I started to notice the the screen would dim about 10 15 percent and have a pink hue to it. At first I thought it was the battery saver kicking in...so I left my computer plugin and boom there it went again. My monitor setting were at 100% turned off my battery saver and there it went ever hour or so it would dim and turn hue of pink! Contacted dell they replace my monitor twice and my motherboard and still having the problem...I'm sure a lot of you XPS users have this same issue if you took the time to check! Other problems battery last max 3 hour internet connection dies and have to restart the computer to get it back! DELL just wants me to keep sending it back! Had enough! Please check you XPS to see if you have this issue...its subtle so you nee to have a good eye.
Like the Linus review better. Can't recommend this laptop because the lack of support for different OS types. Not everyone is a Windows hugger. Network card is NOT Intel according to Linus so the compatibility could be iffy in the future. Don't misunderstand me I like your reviews Lon. Really but this time I guess I'm to much of a sysadmin and expecting more from you. Still I guess it's ok for most of the people. But you know how it goes in a couple of years people buying this laptop come knocking on your door and asking if you could breathe new life in to it and you think Linux install would be great. But it has a crappy network card. Just my two cents
ahhahha i understand you gear to the largest crowed..still a bit more info wouldn't hurt ? it's not a question of me being a sysadmin. But knowing what one is watching..the outside of laptops looks 90% the same..it's the inside that matter ..And not only faster cpu like manufactures would like you to believe..or more pixels..Just mentioning this is a X Y Z brand network card.. You already mention the gpu.. so adding the network card makes you valuable to the rest of the people ;-) i hope we also matter?..still i watch your vids and subscribe because i like the content.. just a request for the future..it's like people forgetting spdif on media stations..ahahha
+samdeur From memory it's a Broadcom wireless card. I'm not sure what compatibility is like with Broadcom wireless chipsets on Linux but there's always the option of replacing that card with an Intel one if it's an issue.
to be future proof i would opt for intel..Last time i wanted to spend this amount of cash on a laptop/computer Dell dropped the ball and i got a MacBookPro..Next time i'l give them a second chance , i expect Linux compatible hardware..everyone looks for what he or she finds important and this is at the top of my list ;-) ps recommend it should be on everyones list.. spending that much of your hard urned cash i can't imagine you want to limit your choices to one os.. you never know what the future wil bring..
+InsektGaming Razer quality control is bad. Razer's support is terrible and they will drop support any time on their computers if they feel they are losing money.
If I were to give this a thumbs down it wouldn't be because of your review. Rather it would be the PC itself. Looks at all those finger print smudges on the display. Yuck. Chicklet keys? No way. Speakers on the bottom? Web cam in a screwy place? Deal breaker all around. Especially the cost is way too much for my tastes.
Same processor, same GPU with an extra 2GB of GDDR5 and way lower price, just saying. www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i7559-2512BLK-Generation-GeForce/dp/B015PYZ0J6
This is the most detailed and well put together review of the XPS 15 I've seen so far. Thank you for taking the time to make this!
I appreciate your disclosure mentioned in the beginning of this video.
This is the best review I've seen yet. I've been flip flopping between this one and high end LP for photography with editing saving to albums and sharing. Will use it for some emailing and Facebook. I'm really liking this 15" xps a lot more now after watching Ion in action on this one. Thanks for the great review. I'm sold on this one now.
love the way you switch the cameras live.
I'm in love with the design. Hopefully they refresh their 4K (non-OLED) monitors with those bezels.
beautiful review
was going to do a quick review on the wd duel drive nothing crazy Ive used it for a while so i am going to compare usability vs the new m.2 ssd i got for my laptop so not on performance but which one feels better while in use any tips its probably going to just be shot on my in built web cam or something like that because time is not something i have right now
+Lon Seidman I actually saw the XPS 15 laptop in a store once, the screen looks OMG SO HD LIKE 4K!!!
Great review, love the shoutout to Linus Tech Tips as well!
Just bought it, can't wait to get my hands on it!
A really good and comprehensive review. Thumbs up and subscribed. Awesome!
woah, you're the first reviewer that mentions another RUclipsr that reviews tech, kudos.

This laptop is a beast!!
Good review and clean explain....nice job

Thanks. Very good presentation.
Great review!
Better than linus's review, also I bet the type c connector is for upcoming external gpu's.
I've been asking various reviewers this question, but have you had rattling issues with the speakers? The Microsoft store blamed it on a "bad batch," but we went through 4 units, and even after all the updates (drivers, BIOS, etc.), the speakers rattled at volumes above 30%.

Everything except the webcam is PURR-FECT! :D
Hey, Lon! I was just wondering. In your personal opinion, what is the best sub-300 dollar PC? Which is your favorite? I need one for school next year, and some advice would be great!
Thanks! That helps a lot!
Aside from the problems you had with the Surface Book, How does this compare?
In my usage its the best laptop
nice! so since this has a new thunderbolt 3 port can an egpu work with it?
Yeah I have the same question. It'll be sweet if it works with Razer core.

Xps specs:i7, 256 SSD, 8gb ram nvidia gtx 960m-2 gb, FHD Display
Inspiron specs: i7,1tb SHHD(hybrid) 8gb ram, gtx 960m-4gb, 4k display.
Im a Multimedia Student. so i want a laptop for multimedia editings/purposes, very light and portable, sturdy and a good investment for money. Im so torn between the two. what should I buy?
same problem here. Did u choose yet!
The storage is what's holding me back...there is a i5 version that has more storage but it isn't using an SSD just a SSHD.
+Lyndon Jackson If youre too conscious about speed and reliabilty choose the ssd one. but I heard that the difference of speed between ssd and shhd is not a big deal. So if you want bigger memory than speed then choose the shhd. but you cant never go wrong with I7 bruv
how can you have 960m in a custom rig?
the m means like moveable so what you should get instead is just a 960
The m doesnt mean movable but mobile.
They need to stop making laptop cam and mics. I agree with you, go and pick up an awesome cam and mic set up. They should save the consumer money to get rid of cams and mics, those are legacy useless components now. Including mechanical clicking trackpads.
Bought this computer thinking I was getting the greatest computer out
there...WRONG! I am just letting anyone who has the XPS 15 to know that
there is a defect with the monitor! Most of you wont notice it if you
just watching movies or videos. But after a while I started to notice
the the screen would dim about 10 15 percent and have a pink hue to it.
At first I thought it was the battery saver kicking in...so I left my
computer plugin and boom there it went again. My monitor setting were at
100% turned off my battery saver and there it went ever hour or so it
would dim and turn hue of pink! Contacted dell they replace my monitor
twice and my motherboard and still having the problem...I'm sure a lot
of you XPS users have this same issue if you took the time to check!
Other problems battery last max 3 hour internet connection dies and have
to restart the computer to get it back! DELL just wants me to keep
sending it back! Had enough! Please check you XPS to see if you have
this issue...its subtle so you nee to have a good eye.
You already mention the gpu.. so adding the network card makes you valuable to the rest of the people ;-) i hope we also matter?..still i watch your vids and subscribe because i like the content.. just a request for the future..it's like people forgetting spdif on media stations..ahahha
ok thx
Please do a giveaway for this laptop
your paying extra for the 4k display haha
compare with Razer ! and the 800$ dell
+InsektGaming
Razer quality control is bad.
***** Oh, did you? Sorry, Lon, didn't notice.
***** I think the extra 2GB of GDDR5 would have helped in your test of GTA 5 since you exceeded the video memory when putting the display to 4k.
Awesome review!
