I'm a graphic designer, creating artworks for web and print in Photoshop and Illustrator. I've read everywhere and watched your videos about the colours on the XPS but still I have a question - is it possible to calibrate the screen using professional software and hardware calibrator so it's better? I'm not expecting to completely eliminate the blueish whites, but to get something closer to what it should be. Also, is the issue THAT bad to drop the 4k XPS completely for a pro graphic designer? Yes, calibration with a colorimeter and companion software significantly improve color accuracy. Whites will always be toward the blue though, due to the native extremely high white point. If you have to create assets for print or web professionally, I would find the high white point a challenge. For other graphic design work it matter less (where you're not trying to match print output or the average display for web assets).

Amer Mh it wont since dell owns the rights to that screen i think. its called the infinity edge display and i think it has a patent a trademark on it so yeah its sad :(
***** yes there is I talked to aorus and they said they aren't having full fledged desktops rather that's only for the aorus x7 while the x5 and x3 will have the 1070m. also laptops from clevo have had specs touting a 1080m. so I don't think that theyd skip the 1060m. but they will basically be closer to their desktop counterparts than ever before. An announcement is most likely planned for august. Its all released recently on ncix and notebook check.com

great review. it was very informative to hear that the XPS throttles more than the Razer; to my use, casual Premiere Pro rendering, I hate throttle. I was not expecting the Razer to handle heat better -yet I am still to find a laptop that handles throttle better than the Surface Book, it was very difficult to get the I7, dGPU version to go lower than 3 Ghz for the CPU even over extensive CPU use. if only MS released a SurfaceBookPro, with 45 watts CPUs, all my dreams would come true (except for Mexico winning the World Cup)..
dell - over 6 months old / razer - just came out and is identical other than graphics card. The huge bezel and soldered memory kill the blade for me. would have been nice to have a 1080 option with gsync for the blade. Will be interesting to see what dell comes out with in a few months for the refresh.
If i spent >2000$ I'd like to use it for a quite long time, like 8 years, and who know if 16GB would be enough at this moment? I could upgrade the GPU using an external dock but not the RAM. And with VM RAM is never too much
+terryhi Some people do need 32Gb of ram, specially if you use external monitors and do a lot of multitasking. I have the XPS 15 with 16GB and I've gotten close to 14GB a few times, I'm sure in the next year websites etc will take a bit more ram, specially on chrome. Is nice to have the option to upgrade to 32Gb and I'm sure I will be upgrading it within the lifespan of the laptop.

Marko It's got 4GB of vram I think, vs 2 on the xps. Not that that will make a difference in most scenarios. The cooling is also probably better, which means better performance w/ gpu boost.
Quick question about the Razor. I've seen elsewhere on Amazon's review section of one of their recent models (not sure if it was this exact one) that people were experiencing some quality control issues with their Razer laptops. Have you heard of this before in regards to Razor pructs? Do you have a recommended retailer/website from which to purchase such that is both reasonable in price and provides some type of warranty options? Thanks
Another staggeringly good and very detailed review. Listen carefully as there are a lot of facts here! The Dell is almost excellent out of the box but seems to be a late Beta unit. Most of the issues have been sorted by Dell via drivers and BIOS updates. But it desperately needs a repaste of the CPU/GPU plus fixing the defective thermal pads for the vrm. Then a good underclocking. That gets temperatures and throttling sorted. So there is plenty of upside to the Dell if you like to tweak... Of course, these tweaks likely will also improve the performance of the Razer Blade but I don't know by how much. The better GPU obviously makes a significant difference. With 16GB of RAM, who cares if that is not upgradable. I prefer a larger screen however...

Terrific review, as ever. Razor - I assume they realise they could attract the 'professional' user? Razor again: two changes , solder on 32GB RAM for the 512GB ssd model. Yes, few really need it, but then want and need are always different. And if they could just improve that display slightly. Not necessarily to a 15.6in like the Dell, but maybe a 16:9 panel. Just to appear to squeeze in more - the Surface Book panel looks so could in part because it seems more usable for people other than just netflix users.

I have the XPS with the 4K screen and 512g SSD and enjoy it, but use it as my development machine (Delphi, C#...) the larger screen helps. Plus having thunderbolt 3 helps future proof it (just like the razor). It plays video up to uhd 60p just fine using either the nvidia gpu or the on chip intel graphics.
semi the new xps model is going to have a 1050. Howvere the screen is a bit slow in terms of response times for fast gaming like FPSs, but I've gotten used to it and don't notice it anymore.

Looks in a laptop are not important, in fact it's of no interest. It is a work machine and reliability, usability and practicality are the main drivers of choice and it is clear the Razor Blade is far better the the XPS; better GPU, better trackpad, better keyboard, etc. The bezels probably mean less flex, and better to pull the lid open without pressing on the screen. Hard to see why you would choose the XPS over rage RB.

(And -- gaarggle! -- I've been lusting after the new Blade ever since it was announced--like hearing that the 970 is kicking a$&) My friend John recently went with a maxed-out Dell after I repeatedly tried to steer him towards Razer, even though I've been his 'tech guy' for 30+ years (we're childhood friends). Part of this may be 'old man syndrome.' He's in his early 50's and used to touching things before he buys them, at places like Microcenter. Can't do that with the Blade. Last week he mentioned that the Dell's battery life is pretty poor--which I expected, 4k screen and all--at around 1-1/2-to-2 hrs, which I didn't expect. That seems crazy low to me even with the increased power load... and he's not exactly 'a gamer' per se--spends most of his time in World of Tanks, when he's not working. At any rate, I've been keeping an eye out for this specific comparison. Thanks.
In Italy the Razer Blade has only two models and the cheap one starts at 2500 euros for the FHD model with an i7 HQ 4720, 8GB of DDR3 and the 970M, while the cheapest XPS15, also FHD has a i7 HQ 6700 and 8Gb of DDR4 and that costs 1450 Euros. So this is a no brainer as far as i'm concerned
Lisa, Please suggest me a converter for the DELL XPS 15 thunderport port within 20$ so that i can get more USB ports. And i just wonder if you could show me some snapshots of the different scaling of the 4k display of Dell XPS.
Just get a USB 3.0 hub, unless you need the full speed of USB 3.0 for each device. Dell sells its own Thunderbolt 3 dock which is kind of expensive, will work with any Thunderbolt 3 device also not just Dell.
I'm a fan of the Razer Blade, but the screen of the XPS made Razer's screen looks like shit compared to it. I hope Razer will improve the design of their screen in their next year's version

HI, I bought 2 dell xps in the last month and I have to say they are realy good. BUT they all seem to have coil whine 24/7. And dell seems to know about it when I talked to them. And said its normal. I am going to ask for a refund. Does your xps 15 by any chance have the same problem? I realy like the shape of the laptop, because I would like an ultra book with atleast a gtx 960m, good battery life, 15 inch 1080p screen mat pref. But cant seem to find any other in the market. I'm getting a blade for sure but they should have put a 980m in the Blade 2016 since the 2015 already had a 970m regardless of the extra , mostly unusable 3gb ram in the 2016
I don't play my games in high resolution; I need it to perform without issues. I need 32GB+ RAM for all of my development software (ncluding VMware), so SOC is garbage everyday. I have my XPS 9550 with the 84Whr battery, but I found a vendor selling the OEM 56WHr one so I can add a SATA III w/2 mSATA drives in RAID0, along with switching to the Samsung SM951 512GB M.2 PCI-E GEN3 SSD.

I just want to know when the release for europe (or germany in particular) will be :D and still keep in mind, the razer blade is a high quality product you could compare to the MacBook pro in quality terms. The biggest problem of razer blade is the soldered RAM, it would be nice to upgrade to 32 GB to be more future-proof

No, the graphics cards are soldered onto the motherboard, therefore they can't be upgraded later.

Sure, the Razer Blade can do that quite well. The XPS 15 can even do it decently.
Got my Inspiron 7559 it's awesome. The gpu on the Inspiron 7559 is a little better than the one in the xps 15.

Is it possible to use the Dell xps 15 for programs like solidworks? I know the gpu is not officially supported, but id like to have a laptop for both gaming and industrial design. I do not plan on making huge projects in solidwork.

I have the XPS with the 4K screen and 512g SSD and enjoy it, but use it as my development machine (Delphi, C#...) the larger screen helps. Plus having thunderbolt 3 helps future proof it (just like the razor). It plays video up to uhd 60p just fine using either the nvidia gpu or the on chip intel graphics.

semi the new xps model is going to have a 1050. Howvere the screen is a bit slow in terms of response times for fast gaming like FPSs, but I've gotten used to it and don't notice it anymore.

I brought Razer blade 2016 for a while. In fact I was attracted by the scream edge in the Dell xps but the vedio card is gtx 960m. Also the keyboard of the Razer blade 2016 is really cool.

ugh, the bezels on the razer blade is ugly. It looks like something from the stone age.
Looks in a laptop are not important, in fact it's of no interest. It is a work machine and reliability, usability and practicality are the main drivers of choice and it is clear the Razor Blade is far better the the XPS; better GPU, better trackpad, better keyboard, etc. The bezels probably mean less flex, and better to pull the lid open without pressing on the screen. Hard to see why you would choose the XPS over rage RB.

My friend John recently went with a maxed-out Dell after I repeatedly tried to steer him towards Razer, even though I've been his 'tech guy' for 30+ years (we're childhood friends). Part of this may be 'old man syndrome.' He's in his early 50's and used to touching things before he buys them, at places like Microcenter. Can't do that with the Blade.
Last week he mentioned that the Dell's battery life is pretty poor--which I expected, 4k screen and all--at around 1-1/2-to-2 hrs, which I didn't expect. That seems crazy low to me even with the increased power load... and he's not exactly 'a gamer' per se--spends most of his time in World of Tanks, when he's not working. At any rate, I've been keeping an eye out for this specific comparison.

In Italy the Razer Blade has only two models and the cheap one starts at 2500 euros for the FHD model with an i7 HQ 4720, 8GB of DDR3 and the 970M, while the cheapest XPS15, also FHD has a i7 HQ 6700 and 8Gb of DDR4 and that costs 1450 Euros.
So this is a no brainer as far as i'm concerned

Just get a USB 3.0 hub, unless you need the full speed of USB 3.0 for each device. Dell sells its own Thunderbolt 3 dock which is kind of expensive, will work with any Thunderbolt 3 device also not just Dell.

I'm a fan of the Razer Blade, but the screen of the XPS made Razer's screen looks like shit compared to it. I hope Razer will improve the design of their screen in their next year's version
Get the 15" screen, anything smaller and you'll regret it. I like my 9550, although the early drivers were causing display issues.

Razer has 14 inch blade, 17 inch blade pro, why don't they make 15 inch blade? Also, they put 970m in 14 inch machine, and 960m in 17 inch machine, I don't understand it.

HI, I bought 2 dell xps in the last month and I have to say they are realy good. BUT they all seem to have coil whine 24/7. And dell seems to know about it when I talked to them. And said its normal. I am going to ask for a refund. Does your xps 15 by any chance have the same problem? I realy like the shape of the laptop, because I would like an ultra book with atleast a gtx 960m, good battery life, 15 inch 1080p screen mat pref. But cant seem to find any other in the market. I don't use apple.

I need 32GB+ RAM for all of my development software (ncluding VMware), so SOC is garbage everyday.
I have my XPS 9550 with the 84Whr battery, but I found a vendor selling the OEM 56WHr one so I can add a SATA III w/2 mSATA drives in RAID0, along with switching to the Samsung SM951 512GB M.2 PCI-E GEN3 SSD.

i like the 9550 mainly for its design and features. the 1060 is weaker then the 1080. i don't search for a gaming laptop. and if then i'll buy an additional one to the xps 15
