Jealousy is loving someone and hating them at the same time. That's Darren's relationship with Steven Wilson in a nutshell. It's amusing to watch him put on this exasperated act of misery and dread for another SW release, while you can tell that he simultaneously feels compelled to cover someone he hates (aka loves) because there is potential to get a couple hundred hate-watch views. At this point he's realised he can put a little bit of attention on himself for someone else's hard work and we should all tip our hats to Darren for his god-like ability to game the algorithm. Unfortunately that algorithmic engagement isn't long term and certainly isn't translating into subscribers because Darren's music lacks any sort of commercial viability, or "listenabaility" for that matter. Which is perhaps the root cause of his disdain for his fellow peer's prolific and successful music career. "Prog" or not. Why not run with it Darren? Start a full blown misery, hate, late-life, resentment channel and capitalise more significantly on all the other miserable people's RUclips surfing boredom. Maybe that's where you can finally find your calling? There is serious earning potential there! Especially for you because you do the whole insufferable act so well! It's quite convincing! Until then, enjoy the $3.52 in ad revenue from this video. That should cover the electricity costs it took to make it. See you next year! 🍻❤️

You have slated almost every album by Wilson & Porcupine Tree. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, and your videos are certainly entertaining. I do, however, wonder if it's something personal you feel against him. In my humble opinion, some of his stuff is okay, certainly not all. At least he keeps trying to innovate, if not altogether successfully.

In another video there is a comment left by a childhood friend of Wilson who was in a band with him and he says that he really loved the idea of putting out albums, the cover art, the design and all that, but that ''the music wasn't really important to him'', which is quite telling and perfectly encapsulates Wilson's career. He's in love with the idea of being an ''auteur'' in his own words but he has no real artistry so his stuff ends up being imitative, anemic and ungenuine. I’m afraid I have to agree with you on SW. Though happily music is not all dead, did you review Black Midi? I always think their latest album is what SW desperately wants to make but never will…
There is not one artist that doesn't copy from someone else since the 1980s onwards . Even Darren copies from artist's on his solo material. Noel Gallagher will openly admit he stole from every classic artist hook line and sinker but these artists put there own spin on it simple as that ..there is no more originality in music and hasn't been for years and years ..
@@billmorgan306 Thomas Adès, Jan Bang, Eivind Aarset, Murcof, Autechre, Jaga Jazzist, Tesseract, Between the Burried and Me, Black Midi, they all have a starting point yes but they move so far that they really do make their own world, apart from others. Wilson talks about doing that but fails miserably. It's not different. You can't tell me anyone else sounds like Eivind Aarset or Jaga Jazzist or Murcof. With Wilson you can point at a different piece and say 'oh, that sounds like Floyd' or 'that sounds like 80s Tangerine Dream. You can't say that about those other artists. David Sylvian wasn't 70s, he did most of his best work in 90s/2000s. Eno still does revaluationary records today, The Ship sounds like nobody else. Even if you class them as 70s, they are still original. IF Wilson didn't talk so much about experimenting, he wouldn't be judged against that. He does though, so that is what I judge him on and this is not experimental at all, in no shape or form. I keep saying it, it's AI Music. You'll never be able to convince me that this album and previous Future Bites are anything but rubbish, boring, average, run of the mill rubbish.
Copying while re-elaborating is one thing but Wilson has made a career out of just aping other bands' sound in the most bland and uninspired way possible.
You are deluded to think there's any originality and something that no one has done ever before. Everything was covered from 63 until Ard 85 there is no genre that is out their now that anyone can say I heard that before from another artist previously...music industry has nothing more to give so if any artists embrace or lift from another artist so he it if you enjoy that music they are putting out ..I had the pleasure of growing up in the 70s and enjoying every new genre coming thru and opened to everything and if any artist takes them past forms and puts their spin on it good luck to them ....just listen to any of Darren's CDs they have been influenced by a number of prog bands etc and sound blatantly like any of them so is Darren a fraud.. no he's not he's just playiwhat he likes same as Steven Wilson....
Come on Darren, you're making everyone believe that you really hate Steven Wilson. You clearly don't. You listen to all his albums and even bought and read his book. You're obsessed with the guy. You do a good job sounding like you hate him but we all know that's not true, you love him.
I do it only for the views...because people like you watch these videos, whereas you would never watch me talk about anything I'm genuinely enthusiastic about.

I’d say it’s his least interesting album he’s produced. I like some of his work but it’s really becoming very generic . I can't get over the reviews raving about this turgid piece of crap. Music is really struggling at the moment but looking forward to the new Jan Bang Eivind Aarset album out next week but good albums are getting fewer a far between.
When I first heard The Sky Moves Sideways I said "this sounds just like an unreleased Pink Floyd album". That WAS the appeal of it. I was thrilled that someone decided to carry that torch forward. It's ok that it's derivative. He wears his influences outwardly and he makes no attempts to conceal that. I grew up on the music of the 60s and 70s. Yes, Floyd, Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, ELP, etc. It defined my musical backbone. I am happy that Steven and other acts continue to work within that same framework. If he's found commercial success in that, it's clearly because people enjoy that sound. Who cares if it's.not earth shatteringly new and ground breaking. Music like that comes out every day but that's not the type of music that interests Steven. He works in the arena that he enjoys and was inspired by and he's done a fine job of creating modernized soundscapes from the prog history we all love. I don't understand why people who don't like his music, and have known they don't like it for a long time, have to continuously tell others who enjoy it that they're wrong. Or they don't understand music. You're the ultimate gatekeeper of what music and unsurprisingly close minded for someone who listens to music at all. The originators of much of the early prog work have enjoyed Steven's contributions to the space so much so that they've asked him to personally remix and master THEIR albums. That's a significant seal of approval. If you don't like it. That's fine. But when you're doing is the equivalent of walking into a restaurant that you know you don't like and exclaiming to all the patrons who do like it, "I don't like this restaurant or the food and I won't be dining here." You just kind of come across as a crazy person. It's like, ok, we get it, you don't like it.Thabks for informing us all of that. Please don't hurt anyone.
Well said...I do think in some of Darren's videos regarding Steven their is a hint of resentment that he tapped into the music that he likes across the board and went with it and I sometimes think it frustrates certain people who maybe play music themselves and ask why him and not me ..well it's because he's very good at what he does and a wide audience of people who enjoy all genres of music like him ..same as oasis who Noel Gallagher openly admits he ripped off everyone and couldn't give a shit it's what he liked and an audience loved it .
Why would I resent SW? I have no desire to have a music career. I enjoy making music for my own entertainment. It’s a hobby. If I wanted to become a “proper” musician, then I’ve had thirty years to get a band together or to send demos to music labels, yet I’ve never done any of those things. I’ve just enjoyed doing my own my own thing. But you know I’m right when I say he’d sink without a trace if he’d released these albums back in the late 90s. He’s the last man standing…
@@billmorgan306 oasis were s**t, Gallagher's can't string one sentence together without saying f**k, that's the limit of their vocabulary. You'll be saying Manogue, Tell me what I want what I really really want and My old man's a dustman are brilliant works of art next. Just because something sells doesn't make it good. You are not listening to what those who are critical about this album are saying. He is being judged on what he has been saying himself about it. If he didn't say it was new and experimental, then it would not be judged in that way, that's all. Listen, it's OK, it's not bad but that's it. It's just average. Certainly NOT as he says, experimental, not even in his own world as he's done all these things before. He's claiming it's something it's not, that simple. It's OK, it's not bad but if you have all his albums he's done before especially early No Man, Voyage 34, early Blackfield, first solo album, there really is no need to buy this. Is it the same as albums he's done before? In the diversity and mix, no. Nobody is arguing that but individual tracks are, it's like a collection of greatest hits, it's music done by AI. It's that simple. If you don't get that, fine, live with it, love it, it's your entitlement as Wilson is entitled to make what he wants but people can't in reality claim that it brilliant new music as they are. It just isn't, it's OK. It's average even in Wilson's own world. That's it, I can't say anymore, enough I'm done, move on.
I think you need to look over a lot of your Steven Wilson videos and you can see their is resentment across them in lots of ways ..I do like a lot of your reviews on artists and don't necessarily agree with everything and that's what it should be about.. but as a 60 year old I have gave up being a musical snob and constantly hitting on someone I don't like many years ago...I do not see your point of view regarding this video as you dislike him so much calling people morons for liking him etc etc.. it comes across as resentment and jealousy ...you need to get some fresh air Darren and just let it go regarding Steven ...
I disagree, I'm not an SW fan but I heard this and liked it, but apparently I'll later learn what a fool I've been. I don't know why you review things by people you hate, of course you're not going to like it. You, like everyone has a right to not like it but don't tell people who like it they're wrong cos that's taking a smug, self satisfied ego rub to new levels.
Reviews are overrated. It's just an individual's opinion. This applies to music, film, TV series, books, etc. It is completely irrelevant what anyone else thinks.

But when you're doing is the equivalent of walking into a restaurant that you know you don't like and exclaiming to all the patrons who do like it, "I don't like this restaurant or the food and I won't be dining here."
You just kind of come across as a crazy person.
Hi Darren, fantastic fun review. If he was born 20 years ago, he would be in the same situation he is in now.
Stevie Weasel. the oompa loompa of "prog" ?!?! Great review Darryboy !!
Bland production, same whiny voice, electronics too minimal and loud quiet bits. Nothing hooked me. Nothing new. I gave it a fair listen . Dull
It's not my fault you're stupid. I'm really sorry about that!
Super overrated album.
Reviews are overrated. It's just an individual's opinion. This applies to music, film, TV series, books, etc.
It is completely irrelevant what anyone else thinks.
Like this opinion, completely irrelevant...
