New series. In this series I go over the history of pokemon including their meta relevance in GBL. In the series I will go over important information like stats, moveset, and typings; what seasons the pokemon were relevant in and why; and how to team build with the pokemon.

Beyond the Hype. I created this series as there is a lot of click bait and false impressions of pokemon and I want to give you a real in depth analysis of whether a pokemon is worth spending dust and candies on.
This is going to be the best team building video you watch.

I start with the question, “What pokemon do I want to use?” Like this week, I have a catch cup Shadow A-Slash, which I want to play with because of all the flyers.
Then I ask where I want to put that pokemon. A-Slash is not a switch. So it is going to be a lead or a closer. I decided based on what I was seeing that I wanted it in a closer role (which I think is best since it is powder snow).
So, if it is going to be a successful closer, what does A-Slash want to avoid? Fire, ground, and fighting. Start then with a shadow Whiscash lead. That is generally just a solid citizen, but it deals with alot of stuff that A-Slash doesn’t want to see and A-Slash butchers grasses.
However, I wanted something that double covers the Whiscash if I got to leave without bringing A-Slash in, and settled on Mandibuzz. That eats fighters pretty well and covers grasses.
However, I was getting sick of the Mandibuzz mirror (Mandis are everywhere this Catch Cup), so I unleashed the Wiggles to deal with fighters and also all the heathen turkey vultures.
That is how I landed on s-Whiscash/Wigglytuff/s-A Slash. It is not perfect, there are corebreakers but I hope to hit expert for the first time today with it.

Another team with A-Slash could be Mandi, Registeel, A-Slash.
With Registeel you are very likely to bait out A-Slash's weaknesses.

Agreed - you need to understand a team in order to use it and not blindly follow PVPoke and content creators

Yep, and on top of that, you can’t be switching your team every day or every other day, otherwise you will never really learn the team and know what hits each mon can take and learn how to play out different leads and switches.

You are really great at theorizing and putting ideas together.
I have watched videos about team building before, but you really give me a new perspective with this one.
While some of the things you say I think many people know instinctively, it's the way you are explaining it and showing examples that makes it very useful.

Dan, could you make a video about Shield Usage. Been playing PvP since December 2023, hit Expert last season and have floated around 2600s for a couple weeks now. I don't think my shield usage is very good and it's costing me a few games a day that I should win.

A system that rewards players for devoting time to a specific Pokemon would be amazing. I tend to power up the Pokemon with the most sentimental value over the most optimal one. Imagine if I could put some effort in and make the sentimental ones also optimal.
I’d also love a system different from best buddies that enables players to have a signature Pokemon that enables the player to use it effectively even though it may not be optimal.

Cores are such an important part of GBL. For example, the whiscash skarmory core because they both perfectly cover each other's type weaknesses. Skarmory is only weak to Fire and Electric, Both of which Whiscash can hit for supereffective damage against and resist both of. Vice versa, Whiscash only weak to grass, which Skarmory resists and can hit for supereffective damage. Then it's just about putting a safe swap that also either covers the leads weaknesses or is type neutral.
Another core example is the Galarian Stunfisk/Mantine core. Stunfisk weak to fighting, ground, and fire, all of which are resisted on Mantine. Mantine weak to electric and rock, both of which are resisted by Stunfisk.
I also like the Jumpluff/Abomasnow core with Lanturn. This core isn't perfect but I like using it with a Dunsparce safe switch.

@@brianwenzel912abb doesn’t have to be psychic double dark as an example, the two b’s can not be the same type but share same weakness and it’s still 2 b’s. For example, annihilape and mandibuzz counts as 2 b’s since fairy weakness, and registeel lickitung counts as 2 b’s. try that type of abb team rather than one type in front and two of same type in back.

Should've included ABA as well as I'm more comfortable about using them than ABB teams. So basically in hard lead losses you just have to stay and lose, and then come to with the counter to your lead and beat them, farm up and it goes from there?

Frail Pokemon require shields. Bulky Pokemon do not require shields.

I think you didn't went through ABA teams, I might need to rewatch the video but I saw you talking about ABB, ABC although not calling it that way, but ABA I didn't notice and it's a very different strategy. There's also AAA but I'll mention it later.
You also forgot some of the forbidden strategies... like stall teams. Like Chansey + (Wobbufett, Mandibuzz, Cresselia, Dewgong and Steelix).
You also forgot fast move teams or RPS, different but usually these concepts go together like the classic Victrebell, Wigglytuff and Bastiodon. You can do RPS without relying on fast moves but at this point it's more of just ABC. Relying almost solely on fast moves is a different kind of strategy specially when playing against it because you need to use shields differently.
I know things get mixed between team styles and strategies too, like ABB + double charm is these concepts put together
There's also stuff like overwhelming teams like triple electric or triple dragon, these can do surprisingly well in very high elos where the meta is stale. I think these are what we'd call AAA.
There's the rare triple debuff teams and probably a couple more I'm forgetting now, but at this point it's more like strategies, but still in a way a team archetype, just relying more on the moves and effects than typing and the roles are something outside the usual box.
if you want to get wikipedia technical on these, there's a kind of "team" spicy content creators used to showcase that it was 2 very strong pokemon plus a 10cp weak thing like party hat Wurmple used just as a third shield, but this wasn't a strategy to win and more like a flex to win in spite of that... but the configuration itself, it does qualify as a different type of team because the third mon has to be something that dies is one charge or very close to hold a single deferred fast move for it to work properly. Extremely gimmicky and content creators don't do it anymore but it's an honorable mention.
