    I got a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro (2018 edition) with a RX 540 2GB. Thanks to this tutorial, I was brave enough to change out the measly 256GB M.2 SATA6.0 drive that capped at 525MB/s R/W to a Samsung 970 EVO 2TB NVMe M.2 drive hitting 3500MB/s reads and 2500MB/s writes. I set aside about 25% capacity for Over Provisioning. I downloaded Samsung Magician and turned on Rapid Mode and now I'm getting 17000MB/s reads and 11000MB/s writes thanks to the 16GB 2400Mhz DDR4 RAM. If yall think I'm bsing, I have screen shots as proof. I used Crystal Diskmark x64 bit to test the speeds.

      I have a 960 Evo and 970 Evo as well installed in two desktop PCs and the Rapid Mode is disabled for those two drivers. The Samsung Magician says that my drive doesnt support Rapid Mode. I only could use the Rapid Mode in Evo 8xx series. Did you face this as well?

    Good video. You can do a live clone using Macrium Reflect now, and if you have an external enclosure, use your old drive as a backup or USB drive. Minitool also makes a free partitioning utility for resizing/changing partitions if you need. Not sure if you'll ever need this info, but just a heads up if you ever need to do this again.

  • @FunTimes.7

    I've worked in IT for a many number of years. That said, this isn't working for me no matter what.
    So, the entire video works flawless for me along with the proper Resize of the partitions.... going from a 512gb B-Key M.2 sata ssd to a 1TB 970Pro M-Key m.2 ssd (and even tried with a 970 Evo Plus). The two 970 SSD's are brand new from Amazon just for this upgrade purpose.
    When I pop in the NVMe into my Samsung laptop, the BIOS sees it perfectly fine. My next goal after that is to do a CLEAN install of Windows. I use the official Microsoft media creation tool to create a bootable media of Windows 10 installation. Upon using that, at the beginning of the installation wizard it does not recognize that the SSD is installed yet however bios sees it perfectly fine. Even if I initiate the command prompt within the installation wizard to use Diskpart, Diskpart does NOT see the SSD. But BIOS sees it fine. Furthermore, if I take out the SSD and attach it to an external enclosure, loading up my windows environment from another SSD will see that enclosure just fine and Diskpart can see that SSD that is within the enclosure. But if I take out that SSD from the enclosure and pop it back into the motherboard so that I can do a clean install, though the BIOS can see the SSD it is the Windows installation wizard that cannot see it nor can Diskpart that is launched from within the insulation wizard is able to see that ssd. Truly an anomaly.
    This has now happened on multiple ssds that I have tried to accomplish this project with.
    Whether I try doing a clone or whether I try doing a CLEAN install, I can't get it to be recognize. Tinkering with the BIOS settings no matter which way yields the same result. Even using an M-KEY m.2 ssd external enclosure to do various different types of cloning and/or reformatting....all yields the same result.
    I'm able to see the 970's (both the Pro and the Evo Plus) through Diskpart within my Windows environment. I am able to see the BIOS interpret that either 970 is in fact installed. But after that, neither a Macrium restore using the Rescue thumb drive nor using a fresh Windows Installation bootable media stick can see either of these two drives in existence.
    I need MAD help!! 😉😭

    There needs to be 10% of the capacity of the entire SSD set aside for over provisioning as un-allocated space. So don't worry about non-contiguous spaces... for SSD it's immaterial and that unused space will be used for sector reassignment/garbage collection/etc ...
    in-a-nutshell, reordering isn't important for SSDs anyway... it's only materially important for legacy, rotating media.
    Also, be very careful about deleting 'recovery' partitions. Under a normal home-brew computer withe Windows 10 - there is only ONE recovery partition.
    On OEM builds there can be many for various UEFI recovery options.

    Thank you very much for this tutorial!!!! Because of this I upgraded from the 256GB that had speeds of 542.5 MBs read and 268 MBs write; also upgraded to Samsung 960 Pro 1TB NvME and speeds are a whopping 2734.3 MBs read and 1960.5 MBs write!!! Also the primocache or even samsung magician are just placebo affects to make it faster using cache but in real world use does not help and will actually slow down a little.
    *** With Macrium you have to drag and drop each partition you are copying onto the new drive; you then take what space is left and calculate that onto the main partition by "undoing"/removing the last partitions. Then on partition properties you add the leftover space. I did not find an easier way to do this with the free version and after a few trials converting to MB from GB I was able to use every bit and byte of space
    *** I also had the same error where the computer would not boot!!! said inaccessible boot device!!! errr; the Macrium Windows Boot error fix did not work either and after spending an AWFUL amount of time trying to figure how to get into safe mode, it worked exactly as you stated!!! safe mode is NOT in the advanced settings as many state for windows 10. I am not positive how I did it but may have held the shift key while rebooting several times or it just finally went into the boot options on it's own.
    ** another thing for whoever reads this is research how to make ssd last longer; don't defrag, enable TRIM, disable hibernate and superfetch, and set fixed amount of virtual memory/paging file size

    So I happened upon this amazing video last week when I was going down a rabbit hole on upgrading my 2017 13” Samsung Notebook 9 Pro. It’s only 256gb, so I keep my 128gb Samsung MicroSD in port (just bought a new 256gb card on Prime Day). You’ve proven that the 9 Pro will accept the newer NVMe, however it looks like most of the Samsung SSDs available now are even newer & state “with V-NAND Technology” & are also PCle. Any idea whether these much newer drives will work with that laptop? Also, I know my measly 8gb of RAM is soldered to the motherboard & you answered someone else’s question about that a few years ago. I was wondering if there have been any updates in technology/techniques that would allow for an easy RAM upgrade?

    I wanted to be sure that Samsung agrees that using NVMe / PCIe SSD is supported on the NP940X5N, just in case there was a power draw, heating issue or could cause a race condition, etc, etc... and they said the internal port *does* support NVMe. Below is the evidence in case people get push-back or warranty support problems:

    So at 17:37 is when you made the error you spoke about in the final part of the vid, correct? You are suppose to manually bring each partition and made sure your largest drive (c) is allocated with all that new extra space from the larger nvme drive, right?

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  6 лет назад +1

      Idtelos Sounds about right - as far as not having to do an extra step to make use of the expanded space with a partition manager.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  6 лет назад +1

      Yup, I did it without buying any adapters - part of the challenge I put up for myself. Still, checkout the adapter I bought afterwards to make use of the SSD I changed out.

    • @Idtelos
      @Idtelos 6 лет назад

      Thanks. So taking your advice, I swapped out the m.2 for the nvme and allocated the partitions correctly, they have to be in order as you add them. I tried adding that c drive last so I could automatically use up all the extra space from the nvme drive, but it would not let me do as such the minute I added the recovery partition. So all I did was to leave 800mb free after adding the c partition for the recovery part. Weird thing is, I was getting boot errors, tried fixing with usb recovery drive to no avail. I was able to boot-up in safe mode, similarly how you did and the pc booted correctly. After which, I fixed any bootup registry errors with another software. I was then able to boot normally.
      Hey, it worked at the end. All partitions sized correctly, boots up property, that's all it matters. Incidentally, I added the OEM version of the soon to be release Samsung 980 Pro (PM981). The drive is absurdly fast with write speeds at 3500mb/s and write speeds at 3000mb/s, many many times faster than Sk Hynix m.2 my laptop had installed.

  • @mattleegee5176
    @mattleegee5176 6 лет назад +2

    I just did this start to finish with copying in about 30mins. To make this easy if you buy a Samsung SSD just follow these easy steps, no BIOS stuff needed, super easy for a casual
    Buy Samsung SSD
    Buy m.2 SSD enclosure off Amazon ($15-$30)
    Download the Samsung Migration from Samsung.com
    Plug in new SSD in enclosure, run Samsung Migration
    Follow steps for the clone, when finished with transfer it tells you to shut down and install new SSD that was just cloned to
    Remove screws
    Open Notebook case (where hinges are there are slots to pry open back cover)
    Remove old and install new (install at angle and listen for small snap when it seats)
    Close it back up, install screws
    Boot up normally and should be all good
    Now since you bought that enclosure for your old SSD you can use it as a portable storage drive or as a complete backup since it still has Windows on it so if anything goes wrong down the road you have have a COMPLETE swap in back up. Or just sell it if broke
    Huge value now that $15-$40 enclosure price seems cheap now
    Options:
    If NVMe SSD download firmware from Samsung site
    Run crystaldisk or other speed checker before and after and make sure things are on point
    Bonus download Samsung Magician when down to see all the cool stuff about your SSD and health of it

      Robert J I'm not sure of actual heat output but most reviews of the 960 said extra heat. The 960 series is over a year old so there might be a new version on the horizon. In a laptop you don't have options for cooling like a desktop so keep that in mind

      Did you do what I said after that? Go back into Macrium Reflect...a few steps after this?
      I think others have commented, and I'm trying to remember...
      Turn off the system.
      Reset Bios.
      Turn back on.
      Boot into Safe Mode.
      Shut down.
      Should work after this.
      Let me know what part you get to before it shows the proper boot so that we can get the actual sequence down somewhere.

    • @tomasmb552
      @tomasmb552 5 лет назад +2

      @@MikeMu Hello Mike, so after some research I found out that this boot problem is related with the the fact that Windows when set up on a SATA drive isn't configured to load the NVMe class driver at boot, so when that installation is moved onto an NVMe SSD, it won't be set up to read it. I found also that Macrium has a feature called "ReDeploy" that should make this transition smoother, however this is only available in the paid version (you cannot get it in the trial version either).
      So my solution was to simply follow your steps. After the recovery was completed I rebooted and went directly to the safe boot (shift+F8 -> Troubleshoot -> Startup Settings then press 4), then I rebooted back to normal mode and it was all working! Also the extend partition thing is pretty easy too, just had to choose "partition properties" before the recover and set the desired size for each one of them.
      Thanks a lot mate!

    This video is old so idk if you're going to respond, but I think I made a mistake.
    I'm trying to upgrade my Samsung Notebook 9 Pro's current SSD to a Samsung 980 PRO NVMe SSD. I guess I thought I could just clone the current drive directly to the 980 using Samsung's Data Migration Tool while having the new drive connected via USB in an adapter. I didn't realize I should have cloned the current drive to a separate external drive.
    Did I just ruin the new drive by cloning to it? Can I reset the new drive back to its original state by just deleting all the files on it or something?

I have an NP940x5m with a 256GB SSD that I would like to upgrade to 1TB. I asked Samsung support about what it supports and they claim it doesn't support NVMe or anything larger than 256GB. I've got an NP940Z5L that I'm adding an SK Hynix P31 M.2 NvME drive into, and no matter what I do the BIOS won't recognize the SK Hynix drive. I've added the SK Hynix into my Asus mobo desktop PC and it is recognized instantly. Knowing that the drive functions, there must be an issue with the laptop BIOS settings. The only other possibility is that there is a hardware failure with the SATA Port 1. Thanks for any guidance.

      Hi Jim,
      You shouldn't have any problems booting from USB. I think I showed what settings I used in my BIOS, so if yours is the same, should be no issue. I do recommend checking for any updates on the BIOS or other firmware and installing those first before you proceed. Reset the BIOS too after the update.
      The RAM is soldered on so unless you have access to the skills and tools necessary you are stuck where you are at right now. If you were in China Shenzen, you can source your own RAM chips and tools to do the upgrade yourself. I've seen someone do it with a fancy hair dryer and some off the shelf soldering kit and template, but its going to be something you're going to want to practice on other boards before you attempt it on your own.
      Good luck and let me know how it goes.

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  6 лет назад

      Thiago,
      If you didn't clone the disk, you should have the original installation and files from your old SSD. It'd be a simple matter of just re-installing that and doing an upgrade the same way I did. Besides that, a fresh/clean install from Microsoft should have been Ok though. Computer restarting is a different matter, I'd probably try and resolve that first.
      I'm afraid I don't have a cloned image handy right now. I had an issue with my NAS drive by QNAP and haven't had time to resolve it yet - that's where the images would have been located if I kept them. I'll check tomorrow if a recovery set of images can still be done from my laptop and let you know if its fruitful.

    Hi Mike, excellent video! I got a Notebook 9, the other version that has no pen (NP900-X5T), its pretty similar to yours. Here in my Brazil, Samsung changed the drive for even worse one than Samsung SATA III that I saw in your video. Here we have a Lite-On drive with very very poor performance. Using CrystalDisk, I realized that Lite-On is at least ten times slower than a 960 Evo that I have in other PC. I wanna replace the Lite-On drive by this 960 Evo. My main concern its about the warranty. Here the manafacturers do the "best" to cancel the warranty. So I am afraid this kind of repair will cause the warranty cancelation. So, I'd like to ask you if you noticed any seals in the screws or something else that can reveal that the device was opened?

    • @MikeMu
      @MikeMu  6 лет назад

      +Luciano Castilho Everything was recorded in my video just in case. I don’t recall if there was, but just because the USA model does not have seals doesn’t mean yours wouldn’t. We have a law that opening up our products won’t won’t automatically void the warranty.
      These were made to be opened up IMO.
      Plus I think everyone should open up their laptop after a while to clean out dust that may block the ventilation.
      I’d say go for it. Oh, disconnect the battery just in case.

    • @81lcf
      @81lcf 6 лет назад

      You should be fine, and I personally think its an upgrade worth voiding warranty for as long as you don't damage your laptop. Make sure you are grounded - I think that part I shared in my video.

I cloned it with no issues through an enclosure, but it never booted, just hung on the "samsung" logo. Keyboard keys would't respond either, no bios access. After removing it, I was able to enter the bios.
    So, I then tried flicking basically every setting in the very limited bios... No luck with any of them. Finaly, I booted from a usb install flash with the drive in, and the drive was recognized without anny issues. Install process seemed to work, untill the first reboot, where it hung on the "samsung" screen in the same way again. This tells me that it is both able to use and recognize the disk, but the bios seems to be unable to boot it. Also, no bios flashes available to fix this (thay I am aware of).
    Anyway, if you're going to try this on a 2019 model, good luck. Not sure why it doesn't work, you'd think it basically has the same bios. (Ps. If anybody has experience with this, I'm all ears :))
