OnnoJ Hello, I have the same model, NP940X5N-X01 laptop. The Samsung product page for this notebook says it's got a SATA3 drive. You can use an NVMe m.2 SSD drive in this notebook??
Hi Mike. I have successfully completed the swapping Samsung NVMe SSD 256GB to Samsung NVMe SSD 960 EVO M.2 . Initially i have used samsung migration and clone the disk on another Samsung SSD 1 TB Evo. I encounter error, PC unable to boot. Then i used Macrium Reflect, as whats in your tutorial by restoring the image file. Thanks
Thanks for the video, Mike. One thing though. For my notebook 9 pro (NP940X5M-X01US), a Size-000 screwdriver is needed to open the case, not 0. I think the M2 slot uses size 0.
Hey Mike so I currently do Video Editing on my Note book and it lags alote for the most part when adding effects ,with this upgrade with the ssd with it make it faster and not make it Lagg so much ? Thank you and great video
Hi! I'm afraid not as those types of effects are highly dependent on pure processing power not so much on transfer data access speed of your SSD. Something like the Helios 500 would be ideal ( amzn.to/2H4e3B2 ) - recently on Prime Deal.
I have 2017 model. Drive is 256gb m.2 sata 3 and not NVMe. Will a NVMe drive work? I would like to update to at least 500gb wether it’s m.2 or NVMe but want to make sure I get right drive.
Mine is the 2017 model as well, so you should have the same results as me if you follow along. If you want to confirm the same model, look at my Samsung Notebook 9 pro review with S-Pen.
Mike, I ended up buying same laptop again. Different family member. 2018 model this time around. This post stuck in my mind. Purchased the Samsung 960 pro 1tb and I can confirm it works for 2018 model. Thank you for the inspiration. Laptop now holds 4 times the storage.
Not sure it will work with Notebook pro 9 release 2015?? It definitely has m.2 sata3 outside the box. With Notebook pro 9 release 2017 it has m.2 pcie as one of the youtuber shows the box of his samsung notebook 9 pro 2017.
+L T I have only proved it possible (and recommended) on the 2017 model for both m.2 sata3 and NvMe. If you have access to the drive you would like to upgrade to, the steps involved would be similar in both parts.
Mike, I just wonder why you do not use samsung data migration. It is very cool. I just migrate my samsung laptop 256gb to 1tb 850 evo sata3. It is automatically make the rest of 750gb to primary partition as well. I bought Kingwin model #KM-U3NGFF as my external storage for my cloning notebook hard drive to my new 1tb ssd. After It finished cloning, I just put the 1tb inside the laptop and it is automatically record the samsung hard drive 1tb no issue at all.
Hi L T. The Samsung data migration tool is basically a watered down version of Acronis's product, which I have used since ... I want to say over 10-15 years. And it will only work with a Samsung product installed and comes with most if not all their consumer retail SSDs. It is perfect for the notebook, and easiest to do as you have discovered. I wanted to cover a scenario where someone else might not want to use a Samsung product for their upgrade and want a free solution that is actually pretty decent for the price of free. Basically use any brand of NVMe SSD you want.
That would have been really easy if one stuck with Samsung SSD (like I did) - they use(d) Acronis technology. I wanted to use free software in this example.
I have never been a fan of live backups, I prefer using a bootable USB. edit: I see in part 2 that it does have an offline clone optionfrom bootable media. Nice.
I think with live backups, it uses shadow copying like most other major backup companies. Yes, offline cloning is definitely an option and looks like you found it.
BTW excellent work. Not only does it tell me specifically about replacing the drive on the notebook 9, but also showed me a new cloning software I was not familiar with at all. I'm an Acronis guy since ghost turned into poop.
Thanks AtomicDog. I know this is a relatively specialized video maybe few (with backgrounds like yours and mine) can appreciate. I'm really happy you got some good info out of it. Happy Holidays!
Thanks for your guide. With your help I successfully upgraded the SSD of my new NP940X5N Notebook 9 Pro!

Hello,
I was wondering what is the max capacity of what size of m.2 that's accepted by the Samsung notebook 9 pro?
Hi! This would be limited by the BIOS. Check the latest firmware to see what it says. I'm sorry, I no longer have this laptop.
Excellent helpful video. Very thorough. Thank you.

Dude you’re awesome!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!
Hi, I got the notebook np900x5l and i would like to know what's the maximum I can upgrade it and what type of ssd i would need. Thank you.
Yo Ludy, did you figure out if the np900x5l is compatible with the new m.2 drives? I'm trying up upgrade the original 256gb ssd as well.
Did the upgrade, thanks!
To do this does my external drive need to be empty? Or can I use an external drive that already has information on it?
It’s going to be wiped clean so it doesn’t matter.

Mike Mu ok I have Samsung np940x5n. I want the 970 evo, what docking station do I need to migrate via usb. I’m going to use Samsung migration.
