    Such an excellent production and video! My Swedish Vallhund Ruben is now 11 years old and still happy and healthy as when he was 1! He loves the Seattle climate and proximity to mountains, snowshoeing with me, and playing with other dogs. He is so quiet all the time except the front door bell! All my friends know to not knock or ring the doorbell or else his high-pitched bark can be ear-piercing. The perfect watch dog lol. Not recommended for little kids - they can be known to nip when little kids are running around them. He can also catch a frisbee in mid-air. He loves being independent but a devoted one-master dog, always watching me and listening to my commands, eager to please :). The perfect off-leash canine companion. I don't know about other Vallhunds but Ruben doesn't like to cuddle very long. He loves belly rubs, neck rubs, and a short hug only, but he is always moving around-- hard to take a still photograph of :).

    About 15 years ago my family found a Swedish Vallund in Brazil streets, we called him Zezão. We really thought he was a mongrel dog who had his tail cutted. I recognize him in a website, didn't know he was rare like this. I miss him, he was a very gentle dog. ♥️

    I've got my third Vallhund, Leo is 8 and happy and healthy. He was very fearful, no doubt due to a breeder who did not properly socialize him as I got him when he was already 10 months. Sadly there are breeders out there who should be raising goldfish. However now much improved and a happy and healthy dog. Wonderful temperament.

    We just found out yesterday that our dog is almost certain the Swidisch Vallhund. We thought it was just a compilation of streetdogs. Great to see our "John" has a familie from Sweden. We did get him 3 months agoo and he is already my best friend. Perhaps because of my viking beard. :). Thanks for the movie.

    Thanks for the video! There are a couple of things I would like to add: as they are a herding dog they do require a lot mental and physical stimulation as these breeds usually do. Otherwise they will act out and get creative - ending up destroying your furniture or something else.
    You have to watch the weight, because overweight will lead to all kinds of problems. Being a herder these dogs will not tire. They can be excellent companions for nose work, agility, obedience and others. They need to be trained properly as any other dog. They can be a bit stubborn, but that is why I find different activities with my own dog so rewarding.
    They get along pretty well with other dogs, depending on the individual, but they do like the company of their own breed a lot. So as a warning: If your dog is a social type, you might end up getting more than just one! 🐺🐺

    Our Swedish Vallhund or as they are named in Sweden Västgötaspets, is his intrest in what we do, if my dad goes somewhere Loke is behind him like a shadow. Laying still when we do stuff aint in his nature whatsoever and that is generally something that is very common for Swedish Vallhunds. And they are cattle herding dogs mainly, not sheeps. :)

    I wouldn't know about popular.... Most swedes are not aware of this breed at all and I have never met one myself. It is mainly kept up north I think, in the least populated areas of our country. Up there you would also find Norwegian and Finnish dogs similar in style but with a more proportionate build. Interesting with the Corgie link though. One can certainly see the resemblance.

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the insight 👍 what about the Swedish Elkhounds? Are they more popular?

    • @jodooxq
      @jodooxq 4 года назад

      @@Rocadog is there a Swedish Elkhound? There was a Norwegian one on your list but not a Swedish one... I'm no expert on these types of dogs but whenever I ask what breed when I'm out hiking up north, it seems to be a Finnish Spitz! Although I seem to recall there being a "Svensk Lapphund". Most likely renamed today. The Samic people resent the term "lapp" which they find derogative. Maybe that is the "Swedish Vallhund" on the list? I just can't remember those short legs! Sorry, I'm a southerner....

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  4 года назад

      @@jodooxq There definitely are both Norwegian and Swedish Elkhounds, i think the Swedish Elkhounds are called Jämthunds. But most of the Scandinavia dogs are related together (Finnish Lapphund, Swedish Lapphund, Lapponian Herder, Jämthund, Norwegian Elkhound, Hällefors Elkhound). There is actually quite a lot of rare and interesting dog breed from Scandinavia.

    • @jodooxq
      @jodooxq 4 года назад

      @@Rocadog I thought the list was a bit short! You're right we do have some nice native breeds between our countries. The Swedish Jämthund is definitely a fairly common breed up north. Beautiful dog! I just didn't know it by the name Elkhound. I need to pay more attention to the dogs next time I travel up north. I have never thought of them as part of our cultural heritage, but of course they are. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! Keep up the good work!

    • @pauliinapain3595
      @pauliinapain3595 4 года назад

      I also think it is not a popular breed, although I have noticed that the people who already like dogs and get to know one usually fall in love with them. In Finland they are in the top 100 of the popular breeds, but not in the top 50. We have also seen a spike in interest for this breed as there are more and more people now who want to get on a waitlist for a puppy. Now I think they have to wait for a year or so as the demand has grown and there are not that many puppies being born.

  • @annajonasson612
    @annajonasson612 4 года назад +1

    Actually the correct name of the breed is Västgötaspets that is what it is called in Sweden since the last dogs before ther rescue was in Västergötland . It is only called Swedish Vallhund abroad in other countries . And it is a cattle herder ( heeler). It herds in a different way compared to the typical sheep herding dogs ( for example the Border Collie). Other heelers are the two Welsh Corgi breeds ( Pembroke & Cardigan) and the less known Lancashire Heeler).

    What does a good sense of humor in a dog look like? Also, do they like to cuddle?

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  4 года назад +2

      They love attention, so they do enjoy cuddling. You should be careful when lifting them up to you, so you dont injure their long back. Sense of humor is meant that they are playful, cheerful, active and overall happy dogs. They are just very fun to be around and they will make you smile.

    • @pauliinapain3595
      @pauliinapain3595 4 года назад

      I can also confirm that they love cuddles. There are expections however, as some like to be more affectionate with only their own family members. But usually once you pet them, they will keep coming for more. They also like to follow you around the house and "participate" in everything thay you are doing. If you want to know more about the dogs I recommend getting in touch with a breeder and asking to meet their dogs or then go to the breed association website and look up the next dog show and go talk to the dog owners there.
