I had one years ago.. best dog I’ve ever met. She lived a good long and healthy life. Fiercely loyal, obedient, never once had her on a leash! She would stay close wherever we went together and come back if I called her, even if there was something of super special interest for her, like wildlife of some sort. Also a very good watch dog. I’d just let her out my back door and she would go do her business and patrol the perimeter of the entire yard while chasing off anything that she felt was not supposed to be there. Loved swimming, car rides, or just being wherever I was really. Miss her all the time. Rip Lil Bit.
I wish I had a five pound note for every time I took mine out for a walk and someone commented either that she was a puppy German Shepherd or a German Shepherd Corgi cross (I would pay good money to see the Corgi getting up onto a step ladder to achieve that!)
I have a 1.5 year old Vallhund - his name is Fenris. All these traits seem pretty accurate - but i think my Vallhund’s watchdog trait is broken. “Alert dog” would be accurate, he certainly makes some noise if someone is coming over, but he’s not suspicious of strangers at all. Friendly to a fault, i think we over-socialized him, cause he just wants to love everyone. We wanted a friendly dog we could take anywhere though, so we got what we asked for .
I met a Vallhund for the first time yesterday and he was stand off ish towards my dog... which is an Elkhound Dachshund mix and looked much like him, slightly taller and slightly skinnier but by me than an inch. Same coat color, same curl tail, same black/tan wolf grey, same two color coat. Also stand off ish. It was surreal.
@@wilurbean COVID lockdown ruined the socialization of my first PW-corgi, who was at first super playful and submissive to many other dogs. He stands off against most dogs except for female dog owners who call his name. The second corgi is super mellow. If I am to get a third dog that isn't a corgi, I hope it'll be a Vallhund, but there are not many in China.
That point about training: "combine the independent judgement of a herding breed with the persistent sometimes manipulative nature of a spitz", that is definitely our Oskar for sure! One of the best things about having a Vallhund is that they have the adorable stubby shape (and floofy pantaloons) like a Corgi but their coloring and face shape is more like a wolf or German Shephard, so whenever anyone new sees him they're just so happy. Obviously the right people are happy seeing any dog, but when you have a dog as handsome as a Vallhund, it's even better.
All the Scandinavian and Finnish spitz breeds are fine companions and working dogs, and scary-smart. Mu Norwegian Elkhound is so smart, when he sees a sign that says _WET FLOOR_ he does!
I’ve adopted one. Even haven’t got idea about existence of that bred😂 Someone told me today about vastagötaspest❤ He is lovely doggo and natural born lizard hunter and clown😅 They both with his sis (half belgian half german) can totaly melt me when I’m down. Both are the best which happened in my life.
We have a Swedish Vallhund or as their real name is, Västgötaspets. I met quite a few SV and i cant say i agree about the part about that they bark alot. Our bark when someone is coming and if there is something we need to notice but other than that he is the most quiet dog we have and had. Ofc this is individual and ofc all breeds can be barking alot if they are allowed. Our Terrier barks 50 Times more and the Chihuhua/CCPP mix is quite the barker too, our old Terrier who now is gone barked much more than Loke does. Even my brothers Chihuhua barks much more. And our Berner Sennen we had barked more. BUT SV talks ALOT 😂 Not barks but talks and its hillarious and loud. Never met a breed during my 40 years that has so much humor. And they are cuddly and loves human contact. Sure its a working dog but its a very nice family dog too as long as they get enough exercise both physically and mentally. And they are the most adorable puppies i ever seen. So if you go to look at a litter and are unsure to buy, believe me you will go home as a dog owner 😍
Agreed. When I read that they were noisy I looked back at the one I had had several years ago and decided that either she was the exception or that somehow, unconsciously, we had trained it out of her. Like just about any other dog she would race for the front door barking loudly whenever someone knocked but other than that she was pretty quiet - and I never had any complaints of noise while I was out from the neighbours.
How confident, lively, and curious is your Vallhund? Do they like to bark just to let you know they're in a good mood or to “chat” with you about your day? Let us know in the comments!
Exhausted after raiding all day, Olaf Erik Svarrdgaard the Viking's Swedish Vallhund was cuddled until both fell fast asleep. Good night, Lil Axel 🐕 Good night, Olaf 🪓 Good night, moon 🌝🌌

More like the dwarf version of Norwegian elkhound or Swedish elkhound. They have very similar personalities as well, only that the vallhund has less prey drive and more herding instincts.
Mines a total godsend, she's my baby in every way, goes mental when someone knocks at the door and wants to literally kill anything that comes within looking distance of me, nips other dogs yets gentle with cats??? Dogs straight mental with anything and everyone but me, she's a lady

I own a swedish vallhund and this is a good and accurate description of the dog. 👍
It's a wolf-corgi!! 🤣
Exactly what I was thinking.
For real though! 👌🐺
I agree with this post.
I want a wolf-corgi now.
Spitz not wolf.

Like the Elkhound, hound+Spitz is intelligent ambivalence and stubborn. But you have to be when you're 50lbs dog hunting 300lbs bears and 500lbs elk

Picture that viking who went off to plunder and came back with a boatload of corgis
Imagine vikings unleashing these little terror hounds on the lands of Britain.

basically a wolf corgi
My Swedish vallhund likes to chew everything she sees!
The vikings loved these dogs and they traveled on ships
They are so widespread, but people think they are stray mix bread. I know of three in my town
they look like mini wolves. I want one.
Uh huh, do you have the time and energy for one?

I wonder what would happen if you bred a swedish vallund with a english bull terrier
No. Breeders like to preserve this breed.
