My parents had two when i was born in 1956. the girl died within a couple of years but the male lived until I wa around 5. that dog was magnificant and so loyal to us his family. He saved us from a house fire overnight once and ushed my toddler brother out of the way of a car, onto a grass verge.. he fell on his back crying and adults thought the dog had barged him for no reason. However, as I saw exactly what happened i came out in defence of the dog and everyone then was very pleased. He got some extra meat on both occasions. I have photos of me stuck like glue to me when I was a small baby. My parent said he, more so than the female dog, seemed to decide he was my protector, and then my brother when he arrived on the scene. Good old boy. I am now 67.. he lives in my heart still and I am sure gave me my lifelong love of dogs and animals.

    12. They love to eat what you eat
    13. They don't want to be alone
    14. Family comes first - neigbours can be included - tasty food helps :)

We had a total of three Keeshonden from my childhood to my early adulthood. None of them were barkers.
Though our Hilary loved running off at night into the country fields to go potty. We gave up trying to leash her, cuz she'd escape. She'd always come back 30 mins later barking at the door to be let in. 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

He's gorgeous!! So typical Keesie in every way, down to the Smiling Dutchman grins and "pants on fire" butt tuck! We just added #4 and have fostered over 2 dozen and every one has been special. After 2 naughty little girls we have a teenage boy - yeah! The boys seem to be much more "Velcro" than the girls in my experience. I have 1 more to add, Kees are like potato chips, you can't have just one (we're on a list for a pet puppy from a show breeder friend.)

Agree with all but the barking. I’ve had 5 Keeshonden in my lifetime and only one barked to get my attention and one barked to tell me things, but both were able to be trained to stop once I acknowledged that they alerted me to something.

Kumo barks when he is hungry, excited, or alerting. He doesn’t actively bark all the time, but when he gets into one of those modes, it is very loud. Good to let people know bc barking of any kind can be a major issue for people who live in apartments.

Omg at time 4:02 it was so funny when he had his fluffy head stuffed into the chair! 🤣 And this is some really good info to keep in mind for when I get my own Keeshond, especially about the barking. I'm happy to wait until we move from our apartment complex before getting a Keeshond. I don't want to drive the neighbours crazy probably not the best breed for apartment living I guess. I don't mind the barking myself I'm used to dogs but idk about the neighbours lol!

Most of what you stated is true. I found them to be the perfect dog breed for me
Which is why I went on to show and breed top quality Keeshonds.
What people need to know is this breed does not do well in hot climates or long walks! They are the National dog of Holland and they are lnow as The Smiling Dutchmen
Bred for hundreds of years as companions and watch dogs for barge captains. They make great apt dogs that do not need much space or exercise. Their coats make them dislike direct sun and summer temps. I have never seen a mean one a nd they are big love sponges. If you can find a quality one you will get the best dog you will ever have!

I think a Keeshond will do okay there as long as they have access to AC when inside, and shade/water/pool when outside. In the summer, Kumo will chill in the shaded part of the yard when it gets especially hot. If you do want to walk them, it would be better to do it outside of peak sun hours.
