My Catahoula broke my leg before she was a year old. I love her so much though! She is 3 now and finally calming down. We live in a neighborhood and she can open some doors and gates but doesn't like anyone other than the 5 of us so doesn't get out of the yard much. Thankfully is a large yard. I wouldn't change her for the world ❤
Our Catahoula simply showed up at our house one day with his mom and brother. Mom was an American Bulldog, dad was the Catahoula...both purebred. Unfortunately the family that had mom and dad abandoned them, simply moved out of the house across the way and left them behind. Mom was no longer being fed so she was looking to offload her remaining two offspring. I was taking our daughters to school one morning and mom came walking across the front yard with the puppies in tow...we stopped to pet them, recognizing they were strays at the time, but had to leave them behind because we had to get to school. Apparently that passed her "sniff test" as later that day after school pickup we returned home and found them piled up on top of each other in the driveway napping. Mom was nowhere to be found and never to be seen again. We took them both in and they were a handful, behaviorally (just like other's sentiments). We initially intended to keep both until one began becoming aggressive toward the other (they were both males)...fortunately we were able to find a great home for him and we kept the one we currently have. He had a serious problem with chewing and other destructive behaviors initially but I believe we're about to train him that finding sticks in the yard to chew on are far preferable to chewing on the house. He needs so much exercise and activity it's impossible for us to keep up as a family of four...we're constantly trying to find activities to tire him out to no avail. Overall he loves everybody, rarely barks, and wants ALL the pets, ALL the time. He's a rotten guard dog, and that's OK. I am a mechanic and he wants to follow me around the shop constantly, always curious about what I'm doing. I speak to him exactly like I would if my best human friend were there, and he always listens intently. The only thing is, he is so affectionate that when I have to get down close to ground level to do something on a vehicle, he is ALL OVER me giving me endless kisses and nosing/pawing me for attention. I can't help but giggle when he does that, but he does get in the way...sometimes it's difficult to get work done as a result. He does play aggressively, our 5ft tall 11 year old handles him OK but our 3.5ft tall 8 year old has problems sometimes. She loves him but he plays with her sometimes by jumping and nipping...which has been very difficult to train him out of doing. No success at all. She may activate his herding instinct due to her size and movements. We live on a retired horse farm with a 2 acre pond and 16 land acres, lots of squirrels and rabbits for him to chase, and the pond is great for him to take a swim in the summer and chase/bork at the "water raisins" (minnows). He seems happy, and we want to give him his best life. We enjoy having him around even if he can be a little stinker sometimes.
What a great story. I’m working hard to get a piece of land to be able to get some more dogs and give Ruby some more space to roam. She is great now and I will make an update video, however I wish and am working on getting her some land so she can live up to her potential.
Our Louise is 13 months old and is just as you describe; smart, high energy, easily bored, independent, a toy terrorist as well. They also say that Catahoulas need a job, and that seems to be the case. Louise and I walk an average of 10 to 15 miles every single day (4 walks) and we train together every day as well. But she’s entirely worth it. Catahoulas just aren’t for people who want a laid back pet, that’s for certain.
We adopted a 15 month old Catahoula mix ( 70% catahoula) she has been a challenge at times because she is very smart and very stubborn. A lot of time and energy and times I thought what have we got ourselves into. BUT 6 months later we couldn’t be happier. Our girl Maggie is such a lovable dog , loves kids and people, she’s still stubborn and goes a million miles an hour but I’m so glad she’s a part of our family.
I have 2 Catahoula leopards omg they are great smart dogs love them very high mainance very jelous with each other u can't give one attention both need it 😅i love them but they will tear up all the hard toys if they fight they fight like pittbulls they love to run and cuddles high enery loves the farm she has anxiety separation I have a rare breed color I just love them people allways say when I wall them thst they are beautiful ❤
I had one and we went to obedience school….that was a great thing. I think that everyone that gets this breed should do the same. The most loving and sweet dog, loved kids and was always careful around them. He loved to play ball and would drop the ball a few feet away and bump it with his nose to the child. However when my husband played it was a whole different story. He crossed the rainbow bridge 16 years ago and we still miss him dearly.
I’ve had catahoulas before and they are hands down my favorite breed. My little guy is a 4 month old rotti catahoula mix and he’s a dream. Everything you said is spot on
I have a 5 month catahoula male( neutered) and an aussi/burnadoodle female, 5 month (neutered). Adopted them 3 days apart. They are best buds. They keep each other company and have a very large fenced area for running. Double trouble, the 2 of them. Both are very smart and loving.
Thanks . I have 2 Catahoula's. A boxer mix (M) who is brindle and younger green eyed tan with splotches on him. They get along great with my female who is a Blackmouth Cur dog. I can attest to all your observations even tho no one has tried to burn down the house. They are extremally loyal and are always at my side weather I want them there or not. Luckily they have outgrown most of the destructive phase. I love these dogs and really like learning about them.
We raised Catahoula's for a little while. They are VERY smart, one of our dogs learned social skills so fast we only had to show her once what a sit or stay was and she got it. They are stubborn, one of our males was slow to learn stuff and it was simply that he was so stubborn he refused to do what we wanted, when we wanted him to do it. They are full of energy, one of our dogs was noted for running 15 or 16 Kms everyday just to keep his energy levels down to a controllable level. They will herd cattle all day, hunt racoons all night, have a short nap and do it all over again. They are tough as nails too. One of our smaller females (45 pounds) was sold to a person who had sheep. Coyotes killed several sheep one night. She was let out the next day and tracked the coyotes to their den. She killed six of them before she died. Phenomenal dogs but definitely NOT for everyone. I loved my Cats but wouldn't get another one. Too difficult to deal with.
Thank you 🌸 we love Izzy already but wish my husband had researched before getting her. Like you said she’s smart, but stubborn. Shes 4 months old and teaches me something new everyday.
Rescued 2 puppies on road 3 years ago. Found out they were Catahoulas. Very stubborn ! Very high energy and very lovable. We have lots of room for them to play and run and they do ! Brother,Sister and the boy is the big baby. Good fun.
In honesty. Getting them at 8 weeks of age is extremely recommended! And they retain and learn really well from the first few months of life. Mine is 6 weeks. And I got to pick my dog out. And that also makes a big difference too. Because if you don't connect together. I feel it's harder to work on long term goals, then if you aren't connected and not bought for looks or breed. My husky is the most stubborn out of the two. And my catahoula is just a ham. And extremely fun, smart, loving and just plain awesome 😎 every dog can be stubborn in there own ways without proper training. Why training is extremely important and consistency. And catahoulas are definitely not for first time dog ours. I have grown up with dogs my whole life. And I am extremely happy with my little man. His name Balloo hehe
Four months ago I rescued an 8 month old mixed breed dog who is part Australian Cattle Dog, Catahoula , Blue Lacy and 17 other breeds. She is very high energy, smart, listens well and very affectionate, I didn't know what I had until I ran her DNA. She is turning into a great dog. I have had GSPs before and I don't find her any more difficult to train then they were.
These are great dogs, they just need direction. They are beautiful, everywhere I go people (the ladies) fall in love with her. All they need is a task or even a toy in their mouth when walking.
I got a catahoula puppy. I read up on them, and saw they were high energy and stubborn. But I had high energy dogs before, and figured all dogs can be stubborn, so no big deal! Boy was I wrong. This dog is demanding from morning to night. Don’t give her attention fast enough, and you will pay a price. She knows what you want, and does the opposite. She will get your attention one way or another. But then she can be so sweet and cuddly, before drawing blood with those sharp teeth.
I had a Catahoula Heeler mix best dog ever. I've had 22 dogs over my lifetime, have to say this mix breed was at the top of the list. Lost him to Mast Cell Carcinoma, and the first two vets who had no idea what they were doing.
Ours is a catahoula german shepard mix. She is so beautiful and YES definitely smart and stubborn but personality out the ass. She my baby and i love her and shes so much fun to watch and yup she eats EVERYTHING.
I have two got one 6 years ago at 6months old and rescued a knucklehead at 1 year. I’m just as crazy as them! I’m active as hell solo male military theae dogs are trained in longboarding pulling, scent work with me obedience and they go with me everywhere. Bars, rural king, lowes great with all walks of life cause they know who daddy is. But damn if you’re not a hyper son of a gun don’t get this dog please. Also e collar trained but there so protective they always stick around.
Maybe Get a basset hound mix as a house mate to her, they are really laid back smart dogs too. I have a beagle terrier mix that helps me with the cattle here. She’s super high energy especially as a puppy ( she is 13 now). We adopted a basset beagle mix and it helped her to relax in the house immensely. They would hunt together too but the beagle terrier learned to chill out in the house from the Basset hound mix.
We rescued a catahoula thinking he was just a pit hound mix, we never expected the energy. I stepped up to the plate and took over majority of the responsibility to teach train and exercise him. He still gets separation anxiety and with him now at nearly 10 months and no longer biting or pinching and learning the rules better I think I can handle another dog that’s older but I need one that will compliment him and work right into the schedule I have him in. I think having another older dog will be great to teach him more manners and keep him a little more company during the day. Hopefully we won’t need to continue to put him in his crate.
Thanks for this! I’m fostering one now she’s very well behaved it’s amazing however I can’t find a good toy for her since she is a bit of an aggressive chewer do you have any recommendations???
That’s my cousins female so so smart very inquisitive will watch what your doing like open a fridge oven anything to do with food 😂 you forgot one thing though their very very protective of what they consider theirs vehicle yard and especially family !
zactly ... we have a 4mos old pit/cata/amstaff mix in equal parts, Luna ... and OMG. Intense dog. As intense in her affection as her insatiable need to chew, to investigate, to keep busy. She's as sharp as a whip, crafty, with a good memory. And Catahoulas can climb trees (?!) Check her back paws and sharp claws. They protrude on command like a cat's. All the potential to be just an awesome dog. If I'm owner/trainer/leader enough to keep up with her ... good luck!
Our first Catahoula was all that and more but our second is totally CHILL. So I think you gotta pick that puppy from a litter after several days of observation or just toss a coin!
I really want another one, however I know it would be pure chaos. She is great now. I will do an update soon. I would also say she is half trained, meaning I spent lots of money, but she is a still a stubborn asshole lol. I love her
Thank you so much for your honest opinion on this beautiful breed. You just kept my house from catching on fire. Thinking we had 17 acres hunting and lots to do but not sure if this will be the right breed for us. Say hi to Ruby for us.
I have a great one that was a rescue dog about 1 year old when we adopted. Of course he had to be cut, not a problem with us. He is the best dog I have ever had except for a Min Pin that we had to put down at age 22. Just have to show who is the alpha or our case the female alpha. She is really my wife's dog. They are inseparable. I NEVER WORRY EHEN SHE WALKS WITH HIM, nobody is going to touch her without taking him out.
After seeing this video and reading the comments, I will pass on this breed. The Catahoula Leopard Dog makes Chow Chows look easy and they can be a handful as well.
I had no clue how to be a good owner for this dog. If I could say one thing now after doing a two week boarding and working with her for months and months that she is the sweetest dog, well balanced and all she needed was some direction and rules. I was the problem not her.
You haven't seen a stubborn dog if you haven't had the pleasure of living with a east russian laika. I learned more from her than of any other dog. I think of her still and she was as stubborn as two mules! Catahoulas are beautiful and interesting but too much for me at the time.
We have someone in our community who is overbreeding her female and many of the pups are aggressive, 3 have been put down as pups for aggression. Back yard breeders are gross, but these are lovely dogs
We have a 3 y/o black mouth cur, I know what you mean about teeth. Her teeth have little teeth. High energy also, on the ranch here, my husband often drops her off, he's in a buggy (ATV) and races her over a mile to the house. She's just ready to do it again. High energy is very hard to describe.
@@OGNonEssential She's our 2nd. I'm unable to really train her due to physical reasons but at 12 weeks, having been in the truck for 6 hrs, meeting me then, it took less than 5 minutes to teach her with both voice and/or just a hand signal to sit the from standing to lay down. Our first was the same. I'm no dog trainer, they are just that eager to learn.
@@OGNonEssential Apologies, I wanted to ask, but forgot, have you heard of coon dog paralysis? Our first black mouth was about 8 when she started being a bit tired looking. I'm a retired nurse and so I suppose that's what made me start really watching. She went from regular "hurry up" to kind of droopy but hubby put it off to getting to hot, Texas+summer+102° in the shade, ok. But from that in three days, she couldn't see, could barely hear, barely walk. I thought hubby was pulling my leg but it's nearly the same as Guillain- Barre in humans. She didn't become completely paralyzed and her sight and hearing returned although she was never really the same. We gave her frequent small meals of canned dogfood/broth because trying to chew exhausted her. We encouraged her to exercize eventually ;ut at first she slowly walked around the porch and yard. I was afraid she would fall off the porch, about 2.5 ft, so I dabbed orange oil all around the edge and along the very edge of the steps. Then I lead her around the yard going around so she could smell the height, the steps, then the height. I let her take her time, check it out her own way. She never fell and when her strength improved, she didn't stumble on the steps. I'd never heard of it. Have you had any experience with this?
I am truly sorry to hear about your first.... My first passed from a sort of paralysis as well during Covid. I have no experience with this and in fact I will now go down the rabbit hole. With Ruby I basically did no vaccinations. She has the one from the breeder, and she has maybe one from miami in order to get insurance. My first dog Snoopy died of cancer. When she passed I had her XRAYED and her entire body was basically a tumor. I truly believe that every time I brought her into the vet and they told me she needed, vaccines, bortadella, rabies, whatever the cough is, and a host of injections, even if it was to get her nails clipped that my dogs was killed off slowly by the Vet. I know that was sort of off topic, but my personal limited expereince is that if you avoid the vet, just like the doctor, the dog will actually be healthier and live a longer life.
@@OGNonEssential Guess what the top 3 causes of death are in the USA? 1.heart disease 2. Stroke 3. Hospital error That's error that kills you, but what about the ones that don't actually kill you, just leave you screwed up? That comes from profit seeking and profit seeking is causing a growing shortage of nurses. No nurse wants to hurt anyone. It's heartbreaking when you check on an elderly patient and you can feel the need for more human touch just by the minute long touch of their hand. You just KNOW that they would heal faster if you could sit and rub lotion into their hands and arms and get them to talk about their life. I hated not having time to teach people about their body. We hand out meds, do tests and send them home with instructions. If you tell people with high blood pressure how their body regulates blood pressure, they can often get off the med because they understand the problem, why it's a problem and how they can, as an individual, take control. During covid I started looking on DuckDuckGo at different meds, then how they are peer reviewed. I was astounded at the number of meds that have off label use in the US but EU, UK did their own research and said nope. Gabepentin (neurontin) is a big one. It's for seizures and in other countries they now allow only use for that. Here, it's used for 3 or 4 other conditions. Statins, big money maker but there is no research that shows it works. The CDC only needs proof it doesn't harm, not that it works. Look it up, outside. Causes such a mess when your head explodes. I think I'm done, I'll get off my soap box now. Sorry
AS a breeder of registered dogs since the 80's and non-registered before that here would be my 1 to 5 list. 1. They are a working breed. They were never meant to be pets. 2. If a breeder sells to a pet home then they are a crap breeder. 3. White headed ones should be avoided. They are often hearing or vision impaired including complete deafness and/or blindness. Good breeders put these types of pups down. 4. Only proven working dogs should ever be bred. 5. Insert your list here. They are high energy, high prey drive, hard headed dogs and as the NALC motto goes....not everyone needs a catahoula.
As a former Catahoula owner I agree with your assessment. White headed dogs are often deaf and sometimes blind. At least blind in one eye, has been our assessment.
I am updating the channel to show everyone what I do for a living and incorporate some dog stuff. She is the sweetest dog once I learned how to be a proper dog handler. The problem was for sure more me than her.
@@OGNonEssential Thanks. Was curious where the entire line or breed of Catahoulas came from. I had a dog, picked ip from a rescue. In hindsight, pretty sure this is what he was. Smart n mostly good dog but a little crazy.
I really wanted one but I made a mistake to get my beagle she is extremely stubborn and tries to show me she’s the boss and it’s a constant power struggle with her. I had a great dog when I was younger and I’ve nvr bonded with a dog like that since but I will nvr get another beagle in my life. I really wanted a catahoula but I don’t like the stubborn breeds so I will stay away, this dog was my dream dog before
Yes, Catahoulas are not for most, your forgot to mention that they need to swim as well once trust is earned you have a partner for life.I found swimming is the best way to tire out the pup.
Dude. I got 9 acres and it's still not enough for my Birdie... why dont you take her with you to run errands? Catahoulas arnt apartment dogs. A walk is gonna do shit. You seem like more the labradoodle type not the catahoula
With a little bit of training and lots of patience they are amazing dogs. She is now about 1.5 years old and super chill unless we are playing. When we have fun she is still a Tasmanian devil , but now has recall. lol.

HUMANS SUCK!
I love this story.
Informative video about the Catahoula Leopard Dog. Thanks.
Thanks. I didn't know much back then. We now have a ton of training together.
They are amazing dogs. Thanks for sharing.
I totally agree!
I’ve had catahoulas before and they are hands down my favorite breed. My little guy is a 4 month old rotti catahoula mix and he’s a dream. Everything you said is spot on
Honestly they are amazing dogs. Mine is completely different now that she is almost 2.
I have a 5 month catahoula male( neutered) and an aussi/burnadoodle female, 5 month (neutered). Adopted them 3 days apart. They are best buds. They keep each other company and have a very large fenced area for running. Double trouble, the 2 of them. Both are very smart and loving.
So awesome!
I have two brothers full blooded . I love them...smarttwst dog ever
I do too
Yes they are amazing. Everyday Ruby and I have some type of adventure. Lol.
Shes 4 months old and teaches me something new everyday.
good luck! Give me an update!
Rescued 2 puppies on road 3 years ago. Found out they were Catahoulas. Very stubborn ! Very high energy and very lovable. We have lots of room for them to play and run and they do ! Brother,Sister and the boy is the big baby. Good fun.
Oh wow! Thank you for sharing!
His name Balloo hehe
this is great advice
Beautiful dog. I have a coonhound mix and I would like to find a catahoula or catahoula mix for my next dog in the future
They are the best
Lots in Texas Shelters so 😢
I had a Catahoula Heeler mix best dog ever. I've had 22 dogs over my lifetime, have to say this mix breed was at the top of the list. Lost him to Mast Cell Carcinoma, and the first two vets who had no idea what they were doing.
Sorry to hear that. Did you find that they were somewhat crazy the Catahoula?
Sorry for your loss i hope your dog dint suffer to long as i know your heart is broken for a very long time....
Same here. Best dog ever and lost her cancer 😢still miss her .
GORGEOUS DOG! GORGEOUS!
we just got one and shes AWESOME❤❤❤❤❤❤
She is my best friend for sure
Crazy! We got one a week ago and her name is Ruby. 5 months old and stubborn as hell!
They are so smart and so fun. Good luck!
Mine just learned to open doors, just by watching me open them.
I love mine so much. They are always learning and keeping you on your toes!!!
What is your pups’ name?
Gypsy is my Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog.... she's a Blue Merle...
Thanks that is a great idea. I will look into it.
These dogs definitely need to work and learn manners, however now that she is about 1.5 years old she is amazing.
Thanks for this! I’m fostering one now she’s very well behaved it’s amazing however I can’t find a good toy for her since she is a bit of an aggressive chewer do you have any recommendations???
Bacon flavored wishbones made out of wood plastic.
I would highly recommend this breed now that she is older. As a puppy she was very curious however I wouldn't trade her for the world.
Amazing story!
Our Catahoula ripped up the carpeting trying to get out of the bedroom that she and our 2 collies were camped in for a couple hours.
I hear such amazing stories about these animals. lol.
@@OGNonEssential Nala’s still the best friend we’ve ever had. She’s smart, funny, always ready to please, and always ready to sit on ya. So fun! 😍
Thank you for your comment!
Thanks for the story. I looked at that breed as well. They are great looking dogs.
1.heart disease
2. Stroke
3. Hospital error
That's error that kills you, but what about the ones that don't actually kill you, just leave you screwed up?
A catahoula is not for everyone I think is how it goes. But yes. I agree. I love her but she is an asshole
As a former Catahoula owner I agree with your assessment. White headed dogs are often deaf and sometimes blind. At least blind in one eye, has been our assessment.
#6 sounds like a outside dog to me.
hahahha i was thinking that this morning
My Houla never gets tired, he’s en asshole 😂😂
I hear ya! Bahahahahha
Update!
I am updating the channel to show everyone what I do for a living and incorporate some dog stuff. She is the sweetest dog once I learned how to be a proper dog handler. The problem was for sure more me than her.
Any idea of origin of breed? Hybrid parents?
Ruby's papers are from Tennesse Highland Kennels I beleive her parents are and her are registered with the National Association. Her dad was ghost.
@@OGNonEssential
Thanks.
I really wanted a catahoula but I don’t like the stubborn breeds so I will stay away, this dog was my dream dog before
These are great dogs. All dogs need to be a #2, so step up and you will bond with your beagle!
Yes, Catahoulas are not for most, your forgot to mention that they need to swim as well once trust is earned you have a partner for life.I found swimming is the best way to tire out the pup.
I know I have one
Good luck!
Dear lord they are the most stubborn dog I've ever had!!!!!! You know these dogs
And they're web footed 😂
YAAAAS!
hye try life with aJACK RUSSELL TERRIER!!! TAlk about stubborm, high energy, and intense. get RUBY a Jack russell to hunt with!
I need to get Ruby a robot friend
I found out the hard way that Catahoula is not for everyone!
The motto is "A Catahoula is not for everyone."
Dude. I got 9 acres and it's still not enough for my Birdie... why dont you take her with you to run errands? Catahoulas arnt apartment dogs. A walk is gonna do shit. You seem like more the labradoodle type not the catahoula
Thank you for the sound advice!
And why do you keep a dog in your house, are you punishing it for something?
I'm confused. I live in a small apartment.
Thanks. Not for me.
maybe you are soft?
Beautiful dog, but too much for me
With a little bit of training and lots of patience they are amazing dogs.
She is now about 1.5 years old and super chill unless we are playing. When we have fun she is still a Tasmanian devil , but now has recall. lol.
@@OGNonEssential Thats great, I have a 7 month old stubby tailed ACD, she is in the crazy stage!
Mine is smart, tears up nothing, not stubborn, cuddly. I have a completely different dog because I spend enough time with him.
You must think you are smart.
