  • I was going to make this into a two part video, so sorry for the long production.
This is part two of the burner cleaning series. As you can see from this video this is not an easy job, the only thing a little harder if you were replacing a leaking heat exchanger then you would have to remove all wiring for the thermal fuse assemble the new two piece heat exchanger and reinstall the thermal fuse and heat sensors.
Here is a list of material you will need.
    Seal screws long x10 #109000650
    Seal screws short x15 #109000102
    Air box gasket #109000238
    Burner gaskets #109000233 & #109000234
New Burner #106000104 this number is for natural gas
You should keep extra of these except the burner.
IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION PLEASE E MAIL ME AT ECONOMYPLMBG@AOL.COM
Please us a licensed plumber trained in level 3 Rinnai training and follow all state and local codes. File a permit with you local building dept. and obtain all proper inspections.
I hope you enjoy this video,
    Mike

Just followed this video to change out the burner on my RUR98i today. Went carefully and took about 4-1/2 hours. Ordered new burner, screws and o-rings. Took loads of photos per your recommendation. No more 10 code!!! Can't thank you enough Mike!

Not only are Mike's videos chock full of clear and useful information, but the Rinnai Guy is totally awesome. I had a question about how my builder installed my Rinnai water heater, and Mike responded quickly to my email, and spent 20 minutes discussing my installation with me on the phone! I can't thank you enough for all your help and expertise!

Did this yesterday. Took a little over 4 hours. I ordered all the parts recommended by Mike; however, I only ended up using the small gasket for the air duct attached to the back of the unit. I also ordered the ceramic coated screws (small & large). I ordered a new burner just in case which comes with the white gaskets so it made things a lot easier since it was only $60 or so
I took pics of everything as Mike recommended & it made any doubts go away.
Pay attention to the clips on the pipes and tubing…the flared end clips around the back.
I didn’t put new O-rings but will probably do that in the near future-probably next spring when I flush the system out.
Take your time and double check your wor

I had a few different issues on my RU98 that needed to get resolved, but I still got an error code 11. Ultimately I ordered a replacement burner, because I didn't want to get caught with an issue once I had the unit disassembled. (this video in conjunction with the Rinnai service manual is very helpful for that). Once I got the unit out, the burner didn't look that bad, but I had the replacement unit, so I changed it anyway. I reassembled it, checked gas pressures and everything has been running fine. I was still bothered that the old burner didn't look like it needed to be replaced , so I disassembled it. As soon as I took the ceramic plates out I saw that the top side of the plates were plugged with fine debris, which looked like a combination of bug parts and maybe some plant matter (note that my exhaust/intake is in an area with zero vegetation and is pretty sheltered so I'm, thinking it's more bug related). There is a fine mesh screen inside the burner upstream of the ceramic plates - in other words this debris was trapped between the screens and the ceramic plate. So the one comment I would make is that there is ZERO chance that compressed air and a vacuum would have solved the problem in the long term - maybe jostling the debris would have given the unit some extra time, but there was no way to properly clean it without removing the ceramic plates from the burner. I'd already saved the service call, so for me $75 for a new burner was the safest option. Why was there debris? Because this unit has NO FILTER on the outside air intake! Understanding there was no filter I wound up installing the UBBINK screen on the horizontal exhaust. Not the best design I've seen, but at least it fits the wonky intake/exhaust outlet of the UBBINK. The inlet openings were still very coarse, so I wrapped it with bug screen -should be able to just blow it off if debris does build up. The unit worked perfectly for 8 years, so hopefully adding the inlet screen will get it to the end of its useful life.

Rinnai warranty'd me a new burner unit, just like you had in video. Unfortunately, a plumber quoted me 3-4 hours to replace at $200+ per hour. I'm in sales, def no plumber or electrician, but I was able to replace burner unit thanks to this video (took me a hair under 4 hours). Blew out all and re-installed. So far no foghorn sound and the water stays hot long enough to take a whole shower. Thanks!

Thanks for your video. This may be a bit advanced for me. I was going to help dad out. The newer units seem so much easier. His unit doesn’t throw any codes but the hot water for a shower only lasts about 5 minutes and then becomes lukewarm.

I finally replaced a new burner assembly by myself yesterday. It took me about 6 hours. It could had been shorter than this if I did not forget to replace a new gasket of the air flow, 109000238 and to fix the water leak and use a hair drier to dry the panel. Once everything was back, it received hot water instantly and was very happy.

Moved in to a brand new Lennar home five years ago, today my Rinnai RUC80i showed error code 12/11. I tried to run hot water by pulling a hot release valve all the way for about 2-5 seconds, the burner started to heat up while the hot water was running in the bathtub at the same time. Once the red light (In-Use) came on, I drop the release valve by more than half way just to maintain the water heating. Once I closed the release valve completely, I received the Code 12 after 60 seconds. I started to clean the flame rods, burner thermistor, and the igniter, but it did not solve the issue. I flushed the heat exchanger twice within a week for 90 minutes each and experienced with lots of scaling buildup, but less on a second one. It still showed the Code 12/11. I am thinking about cleaning the burner, but it seems very complicated! I found this video very helpful and thanks, Mike!
I bought a burner assembly (Rinnai 106000104 Burner Unit Assembly, Ru98/80 I/E. Number Item #: HPH106000104) for sale for $55.77 (Why it is so cheap?) from SupplyHouse.com including igniter, burner thermistor, flames rods/electrode, gaskets, screws, seal, etc.
When I tried to lower the temperature setting from 120deg F. to 100deg F., I had warm water running and no Code 12/11 for couple minutes, but not hot enough; however, we can at least shower for a few days while waiting on parts. I will give an update how I accomplish after I have everything back and running. To be continued....

Hey Mike. Thanks for this informative video. We have a RU98. We use the Rinnai unit to boost the water temperature in our milk house to 170 degrees to wash our milking equipment. It gives me an error code 14 after the water runs for a few mintues. I can turn the water off and it will reset. When the water is turned back on it will resume working for a short while before throwing the code again. It doesn't always throw the code. I was wondering if the thermal fuse is getting weak and needs replaced. Does this seem logical? With the front panel off of the unit it rarely throws the code. I checked the intake and exhaust the best that I could without taking it apart and they seem clean. Do you have to remove the burner to replace the thermal fuse since it wraps all the way around?

Hey Mike, thanks so much for sharing this video! I've been getting Error 11 with my Rinnai RUC98 water heater for a few weeks now. As soon as I switch heater off and on, heater works well for 15-20 mins, and then goes back into Error 11. Also as long as I'm continuously drawing hot water, the heater keeps working (but shows Error 11 after I stop). Wanted to get your opinion if you've seen this issue before, and if it needs a burner replacement. Heater was bought in 2016 (~5 years old). Heater is installed on rooftop, in a separate cabinet (so protected from rain/snow), with open-to-air intake. Thanks again Mike!

Hey Mike. Just watched your video and are amazed by your knowledge. I have an RUR98i and get the code 11. If you turn the water off and back on again, it will usually ignite. After a local plumber cleaned the igniter to no avail. I then replaced the igniter and flame rod. it still misbehaves! While the Cleaning method that you show is very time consuming, I am capable and willing to do it, if this likely the probable cause. Heater is 7 years old. Your thoughts?

Mike, Thank you for producing this series of videos on Rinnai tankless water heaters. I have a RUR98e unit that makes a fog horn sound when the unit fires off when it is cold outside. We talked about this on the phone the other day, you suggested that the burner probably needs cleaning. A couple of questions; Is the burner/heat exchanger the same for RUR98e the same as the RUR98i shown in this video except that the RUR98 has a circulating pump in the lower left corner of the unit? Does the circulating pump need removal to allow removing the burner/heat exchanger?
Another question; Does the circulating pump get cleaned when the heat exchanger flush is accomplished?

    • @dennisparker3607
      @dennisparker3607 Год назад

I solved the fog horn sound coming from the unit when it fires off. I found out that the connector for the fan motor was not making good contact after I removed the fan for cleaning. After the fan was reinstalled, the fan ran much faster which resulted in more air flow when the unit fires off, eliminating the fog horn sound.
