Wow! I'm really impressed. I'm a licensed building contractor and I have rentals as well as my own house with tankless hot water heaters. This man is incredibly detailed, smart, and does a very fine job of explaining everything down to every nut and bolt and screw. If I live nearby him I would simply hire him to come out. He has been an invaluable help to me.
I do agree... so where does he live. Have rentals as well - am ready to buy this guy a plane ticket.
We need a more fellas like you here in South Alabama. Our Rinnai is 20+ years old and in need of TLC. Despite being shoe-horned into a tiny closet with our hydronic heat system the folks that installed the system really messed things up to put things mild, it has served us well, but has never worked the way that it should. We finally found a fella that helped us a lot who did some cleaning and replacement of some parts, but the last time we tried to call him his number was no longer in service. He may be retired or he may have even passed away, (He wasn't a spring chick) Anyway, I appreciate your thoroughness and again I do wish you were here. 😁👌👍👊💪🤙

I just needed to thank you for your videos. I have an old Rinnai heater that just stopped working 24 hours ago. Error 12. I watched your video on cleaning the heating elements with the Scotch-Brite. In total it was a five-minute job and my Rinnai heater is back up and running. thank you.

Thank you so much for this video! I have cleaned the fan but never the burner and heat exchanger but with your help and a tip from my plumber I got it done. It was rather chilly in my house this AM, 54, so I had inspiration. I have radiant floor heat that quit a day ago but my floors are getting toasty now😊
One thing you might add, my Rinnai guy, also named Mike, suggested I carefully use channel locks to get my stubborn burner out. I had given up because it wasn’t coming and I didn’t want to damage anything. The needle nose weren’t working. The channel locks did the trick.

Thanks Mike!! I had hundreds of chopped up Miller moths in the inlet flue, fan and burner inlet in my rl94 with error code 10 and intermittent hot water. Thanks to your video I had the confidence to clean them out myself. I will have to put a screen box outside before the invasion next spring.

Thank you so much for this! 3 plumbing visits and the guys were stumped. I’ve since learned how to flush and clean the fan (gentle pipe cleaner wire brushes were key) and compressed air. Unit is running quiet and like new again without the dreaded error 10.

Great video for techs! Excellent job explaining where to be careful and how to perform the work properly. So, many overlook combustion issues. Rinnai should have an inexpensive HX maintenance kit with all the gaskets needed for every model. Unfortunately, it's almost cheaper to replace the entire heat exchanger kit when labor of cleaning and expensive gaskets are figured in.

I used a Plastic Razor Blades Scraper Tool to remove the gasket material along with acetone. Worked like a charm.
Man I work for an apartment community and these tankless water heaters are in all 350 units, and they constantly fail or are having issues, I have never worked on a water heater as often as I do these things. Thanks for the video the information will help loads.

So I ordered a new set of flame rods from Amazon and in the package I got 3 flame rods but no igniter. I just cleaned the igniter with the scotch bright like you recommended and replaced the flame rods. Still getting error code 12. The visual inspection was pretty clean. The flame comes out pretty evenly when it fires up. It doesn't cycle off all the time but randomly on use. Got any other recommedations? The unit is mounted in my garage and it's pretty warm here right now cold the heat in the garage cause it to trip off line?
Mike, I just found your channel and if you have the time I have a question. I'm trying to repair my V65 internal non condensing unit. When I turned the hot water on I see the far right side of the burner light up but the rest stays dark. The unit shuts off and then tries again and the second time the flame comes about halfway across the burner but the rest is not lit and I get the code 12 no flame detected. I cleaned the burner but it really wasn't very dirty at all. When I blew compressed air into the small holes in the manifold assembly I noticed the air came out of the hole at the bottom that mates to the gas valve, but only the 8 holes on the far left. The rest didn't pass air through the manifold. Are the solenoids supposed to be normally closed to block gas from getting to the burner until the unit calls for it? Do I have a solenoid stuck open? What is the sequence of operation of those 4 solenoids? By the way, your videos are fantastic. If you weren't a plumber you would be a great teacher.

Well done Videos, Mike I got the RL94i unit and got code 11, I cleaned the the three rods and the unit is now working. When the flame came on it wasn't covering the whole surface. What did I do wrong?
Mike a thousand "thank you"s for your super helpful videos! I am replacing burner on Rinnai RL94i natural gas unit (along with new fan and rods/ignitor for error codes 10 and 12) . New burner arrived with no gasket on REAR where 2 screw holes are. Parts list shows no rear gasket available but old burner had one. Is that rear burner gasket needed?
Thanks for the detailed video. I cleaned my sister's fan, which had three dead moths in it, and the flame rods and igniter with sand paper. Still no go. I know there's water flowing through the unit, but it just won't ignite. Does the fan continuously run even without a call for hot water? I tested the fan by holding it in my hand, plugging the unit in, and turning on the hot water in my basement. The fan did not come on. It also makes a loud humming noise after about 5 seconds of plugging it in. Also, I'm not getting any error codes. It's just not working. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Tip: When using the scraper use a stone or file to round the corners of the blade and it really reduces the chance of a gouge.
Are these gaskets for all Rinnai tankless heaters? I have a R85?

I really appreciate all the time you’ve spent making these informative videos. I do have a question about concentric condensing venting: how far can you run this laterally? I am contemplating running the pipe in to the attic of my garage and over to an outside wall that is about 15 to 20 feet away. Also, does the pipe tilt towards the terminal vent or back towards the unit? Thanks again!

Hey Mike, hope alls well. I think I'm almost ready to start serving these rinnais now and understanding how this one works. My question is, are the Navian heaters similar as far as 10 or 11 code fixes as this rinnai. Do you work on them, if so, do you have videos on fixing them too. Ty
The pretty much the same as Rinnai the fan on a Navien is in the upper right corner on a NPE model

But still don't see how they improve the flow yet. How do you pipe a non condensing recerk pump. Do you have a video on that maybe. Love ya man, and ty so much for teaching me. I'm the only one at my company interested in the future of water heaters, lol
thanks for the video, Installing a ru160in sensei, the ISO valves are included with this unit (rinnai part #107000284). The ISO. valves were missing the union fittings, Rinnai tech. told me that the ISO. valve union nut & gasket can be attached directly to the inlet/outlet without the union fittings, got any experience with this? thanks
Yes with the new valve kit they can be connected rite to the male fittings in the tankless.

Hello Mike, I have an RL75i that shows a code 11/12 even after cleaning the burners and replacing the flame rods. what other issue can it be. When I turn unit on, the code 11 or 12 comes after the burner runs for about 30 -60 seconds then shuts off when it starts slowing down. Would you happen to know what else can be the issue.
I also cleaned the heat exchanger...
My burner turns on and 4 sec later turns off i get hot and cold water when is supposed to be only hot water any recommendations any one i really need help !!
I have a Rinnai RL94i water heater. I took out the burner and cleaned it. I was expecting tree "cotton" and bugs but it seemed to me there was a fair bit of blue corrosion that fell out of it. I went to order a new burner but it appears the burner comes apart and 17 pieces fit together to make the burner. Any thoughts on that?
Don’t take it apart, if you can clean it with 200 PSI of sir pressure if not get a new one. Check the heat exchanger and see if has the same on it. Mike

ON my parts breakdown showing the part and the part number it appears that I need 17 burners. And so, I assume a person would buy 17 of them and assemble the burner from them. Can you buy the burner as one piece? And, if so, what is the part number?
You would buy the burner as one piece

@@TheBuddylab Thanks so much for taking time to reply to me. I did find the paper that you mentioned. I had never noticed it before. However, the information there is Item: 107 Description: Burners Part Number: 106000054 Quantity: 17 . The model shown above the Quantity heading is RL94i (VC2837) It certainly looks to me that I have to order 17 of this item and assemble them to make one burner. I certainly don't want to make a mistake on this. Although I know it doesn't apply to me it also has another column Qty with the models above it being RL75i (VC2528).

how long is the shaft on that screwdriver?
I was able to remove the burner and reinstall it with a #2 magnetic Philips screwdriver with a 10" shaft. It worked very well although I had to get my 18 year old granddaughter to help because her hands are steadier.

Very often buy cleaning the igniter and flame rods does the trick.
All these new highbred are on demand water heaters are junk. Trust me they make me install these all the time and all you get is a bunch of service calls and then you have to call technical support which cost the customer more money in the long run same goes with the boilers, you cannot beat an old-school cast-iron boiler. They will outlast any of the new junk by double.
