  • Hey guys!
    So, I wasn't able to find a video on the topic of doing some self service work to a Rinnai Tankless Water Heater. We had one issue with this once before and it all started with the unit getting extremely loud. Once I began to hear it again, I knew it had to be the same thing. So, I decided to record the steps and share it with you! I hope this will be able to help you if you're having a similar issue. Remember, I'm not a professional and I'm not giving you any "professional advice", this is all a DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK kind of thing. So please, work wisely and cautiously if you choose to perform this task.
    I don't know much else on servicing this unit, but if you have any questions, please feel free to comment and I will see if and how I can try to assist you!
    Thanks for watching!
    Dig-It!

    THANK YOU! Totally fixed our problem. We had the sound of a jet engine in our new house every time we needed hot water, and it would fail half-way through our showers in the morning, requiring a very cold run to the utility room to restart the machine each time. We thought we needed a new machine, but turns out it was just completely packed full of asian lady beetles. Now it's quiet and working like a dream.

      Hey! I’m so glad to hear that you decided to come back to my video! That’s the simple reason as to why I made this video. When I had the issue, I couldn’t find anything on it. After dishing out the money to have the professionals, I knew I had to help others! Hope your week is amazing!

    My 10 yr old R94LS has been a problem for 6 yrs.... a REAL problem for 3. Constant Code 10 and cold showers. Rinnai was of no help, and I am rural no dealer within 90 miles. Local plumbers won't touch it. Has gotten very loud. Cleaned exhaust pipe several times, checked settings etc. Watched your video..... removed my fan assembly. 10 yrs worth of liquified, then dried, bug guts ( mostly Asian beetles) inside. Blew it out then separated the motor from the assembly. Took 40 mins to clean the dried goo out with dawn soap, toothbrush and Q-tips. Cleaned the intake area right before the fan, and the exhaust area directly above the fan. Reassembled..... runs so quiet now. Total time 1 hour. Took a longgggggg hotttt shower. No code 10! Thanks.

    Thank you for posting this video. I've been in the basement working remotely for the last few months due to the pandemic. One morning I noticed the fan was a bit louder and then the sound went away. I called someone for service and paid a $59 visit fee. They spent 5 min, turned water off and on, said I should flush it myself to save money, and then left. They never opened it up, never checked the burner, and never checked the fan. Tomorrow I call them to complain. I was on a conference call and couldn't deal with the tech that visited. Once the call finished I checked the notes and asked my wife what happened. This video will help me check the fan myself.

    Thanks for the information! I also removed the squirrel cage by unscrewing the 4 screws on the motor side of the fan unit. That gives lots of room to really clear between the fins. Running much quieter now, cheers.

    Shout out from SOUTH AFRICA - Excellent Video! I am a consulting engineer and installed four burners for a student residences. I have spent over R30,000 installing gas regulators, water filters, bigger gas manifolds out of my own pocket... Meanwhile the stupid RENNAI manual cannot just clarify what to do - great job and thumbs up!!

      Thank you, sir! The manual is definitely lacking on the troubleshooting page. Wish it had a few more details, but that’s what caused me to have to call the pros the first time it acted up on us. Glad I was able to help out! Cheers!

    R75LS (no "i")owner here. Finally, I found a video that shows the one obvious thing any normal person would of course want to know about the single easiest process for cleaning the most likely cause of error code 10. I removed the blower fan unit as shown (slightly different wire connections but easy enough), took the blower outside and used an air compressor to blow out the debris, periodically stirring things up with a small bottle brush. It took a long time to gently loosen all the debris out from between all the fins of the fan with a very small brush and with a thin sliver of wood. I blindly felt around and also vacuumed up inside intake manifold of the tankless unit itself through the opening where this blower fan attaches. Lots of grit and grime up in there as well. Thank you very much for posting this.

    This video really helped me out; I was able to repair my HWH without having an expensive service call out to my rural location. Thank you very much! I am the original owner of my unit; I'm guessing it is about seven years old. I don't have the model number in front of me, but it looks just like this model and I was getting the error code 10. Here are some thoughts that might assist others:
    The air comes into the unit from the top (the large PVC pipe coming out the top of the unit handles both intake and exhaust) and into a chamber that is just a couple of inches high and the width of the unit. It's at the top of the inside of the unit and never comes into the frame of the video. The face of that chamber has like 10 screws holding it on (and they are all super tight). Remove face, vacuum out dead bugs.
    The air then comes down another chamber that is an inch or two wide, and runs about the height of the unit. It is the left most item inside the unit, and has the other end of that rubber sleeve attached to it. Look in there (through the sleeve), and vacuum out dead bugs.
    When I looked inside my blower motor (and the above mentioned places, too), I was disappointed that I didn't see more bugs, especially considering how many "stink bugs" are in my area. However, the fins of the blower motor did have dead bug pieces jammed in them. I recommend using an air compressor (doesn't have to be fancy, just a "pancake" compressor) to blow this out. Take the blower motor to a friend's place if you don't have one. Compressed air in a can won't be powerful enough. I was surprised how many dead bug pieces were in those fins (which affect air movement).
    The air leaving the blower goes upwards. With the motor removed, look up in that direction. I had quite a bit of bug gut juice that had been flung up there, slightly obscuring the perforations up there.
    I put everything together but left the cover off and ran it to test. My first thought was "oh, no, I screwed something up". But really, the unit was so much quieter than before. I guess I didn't notice that over the years that it gradually got louder.
    Thanks again for this video!!!

    Thanks for the video. We have a similar model that you have, just a bit different. Ours is 13 years old and was rattling terribly. Once we watched your video, we knew this had to be the problem. My husband dove right in with me as a backup and pulled out the fan and it probably had 1/4 cup of bugs in there. Gross!!! We cleaned it out and put it back together and it is back to normal.

      That’s awesome, Matt! I hear often that the professionals can’t ever find the issue. Lucky for me, the company I called said they deal with this issue often and knew exactly what to do. My expense was minimal but still higher than I wanted to pay. But, lucky for all of you guys, I watched them and knew exactly what to do. Unfortunately I can’t TELL anyone to do this but it’s totally doable by anyone with a technical hand. So glad this helped you out!!! Have a great day!

    Dig-It you da bomb. My Rinnai tankless heater stopped working and threw an error code 61. I did my research and the problem was with the blower fan. I followed your instructions above and removed the fan. Sure enough there was a small peice of wood debris stuck in the fan blades and preventing it from turning. I removed the debris and the unit worked perfectly. I think you saved me about $1500. My plumber was trying to get me to remove the whole unit and replace it with a 50 Gal tank heater (I suspect that he doesn't know how to service the Rinnai and was just trying to sell us something that he can service). Thank you for the video.

      +Bruce Duval Hey Bruce! Glad I could help you out! Yeah, the last thing you want to do is tear into something like this at the start of the weekend LOL. But it's well worth the time. The first time it happened to us, we didn't know what was going on. You could hear it throughout the entire house and when you were in the middle of a shower, it would shut down and you'd be left in the freezing cold water...not fun! ;). It's really pretty simple, once I watched the pros do it the first time. Figured since it was starting to make the noise again, I'd attempt it myself and see if it would make things better. Not sure if I can help answer any other questions or not, but feel free to ask and I'll see if I can get you the right answers! Thanks again for the comment!

    Thank you very much for posting your video. It helped me to fix my ten year old Rinnai RB 30/36 boiler. In this model the error code for fan/exhaust blockage problems is 99. The manual has a very poor explanation, only mentions to check that the exhaust pipe is not blocked. Some technicians wanted to replace the whole boiler for a new one. Cleaning the lint/dust in the fan solved the problem and now the boiler is quiter and sounds like new! Thanks!!!

    I have a Rinnai 2532 I put in 15 years ago... it's saved me tons of money and we never run out of hot water - even with 4 kids! A few years ago the fan started making a lot of noise and it turn out a mouse got into the inlet air vent . There's no screen on the inlet or exhaust. Recently I started getting an intermittent '10' code and figured that the fan was clogged. There was nothing significant in the fan, but I took the burner assembly apart and there was a LOT of dirt and crud in there. I blew out the burners and the heat exchanger, and not only did the '10' code go away, but the water heats up a lot faster. So if you get a '10' code and your fan is not clogged, check your burners. I believe that it should actually be cleaned every couple of years.

    • @dig-itentertainment
      @dig-itentertainment  4 года назад

      Nicely done! Mice sure know how to get in the tight places, huh! I totally agree with you about cleaning it out every couple of years. I haven’t done it since I recorded this video and I’ve noticed that it’s beginning to take a little bit longer to warm up again as well. Guess I may have to go through it again before winter hits! Glad you and the kids are continuing to get hot water! Thanks for the comment, Andy!

    I came across your video. You did a pretty good job on this maintenance for the inducer motor, as a professional in the field, I am impressed that you figured this out, I'm also a bit concerned, this being a gas fired product, there is a serious danger factor when working on any kind of gas fired product. It's great when everything goes as planned, but when things go wrong with any kind of gas product, Nat or Lp, they can really go wrong, I've been in the trade for 33 years and have seen a whole heap of things go wrong. We spend hours and hours in classrooms, training and learning from reps on all of the products that we work on. Please please be so very careful when trying to do any kind of repairs yourselves. Take pictures of things with your phone step by step when disassembling so it goes back together without spare parts. I have seen experienced techs get hurt really bad, burns, eye damage, CO poisoning, serious cuts. Don't ever guess, be careful and God Bless. Steve G. The Heating Specialist of Cape Cod....

      Thank you, sir! I appreciate your input. I will definitely keep that in mind. If I would have had to do more “in depth” work (if I’d have the know-how to do so lol) I would more than likely shut the valve off going to the device. I don’t like risking stuff like that. Same with replacing outlets, switches and fans/lighting fixtures, I know a ton of people who do it with the wires hot.... not this guy! I throw those breakers like a mad man to make sure I don’t get too messed up 😂. Thanks again for your comment. I do appreciate it, Steve!

      Hey Rita! I’m glad you were able to use this as a guide to assist you with your model! It’s never fun being in the boondocks. My parents live about 15 miles from the largest town in our county (a little over 30,000 people I believe) and that seems outrageous enough just in the mileage they charge to get there and back. And of course, more times than not, they just so happen to not have the part(s) needed to perform the repairs on your unit so then you have to pay for them to drive back to the shop to get what they need then back to your place. Again, I’m glad you were able to get it figured out!!!! Proud of you!

    Thank you for the awesome video. I like doing this type of stuff myself and saving the money. We've had a Rinnai RL75 in our newly built home for three years. Just learned through RUclips how to flush the unit since we don't have water that's softened or conditioned. Ours would sometimes not start up and a plumbing service asked us when we the last time we flushed the system. I took it from there. Now everything's working like new again. When Code comes on about the blowers I'll definitely give your video a shot. 👍🏽 Thank you.

      Hey man! Thanks for dropping a comment. I was actually nervous about doing this because it was my first "How To" and I only watch the "pros" do it once but knew I didn't want to pay their prices again. I'm surprised that we haven't had to flush out our system as well. Even though we have a softener system, it seems like we are out of salt more than anything HAH! But so far, so good! I'm glad you were able to find my video and hopefully you won't ever have to use it, but if you do, just remember me! :) Also, check out some of the other comments and see what others have found in their blowers. I have heard that as well. That’s why I said I’m surprised since we seem to be out of salt more times than not lol. Not sure how well the salt will “cleanse” the buildup, I wouldn’t think it would do Much at all but I guess we are lucky. Did you a pump and white vinegar as the “home remedy flush kit”? Or did you buy the actual flushing solution? Curious which route you guys took!

      Dig-It Entertainment I bought a Superior sump pump 1/4 up from Amazon and used 3 gallons of white vinegar from Home Depot, bought one 6' hose with female connections on both ends, and one 6' regular hose. Ran it for one hour and paid close attention to the filter that I had to remove twice to clean out. Later I learned that I could have removed just the filter and use the plug to seal the line.

    You need to take off the front panel also, after replacing the fan and clean the bugs out of the heat exchanger. Also need to descale it with vinegar for a full servicing. I learned this after finding out our servicing people were not properly servicing it. Thank you for giving us this help so it is not so scary to do it ourselves properly.

      I agree. I need to get a sump pump to clean the lines with the vinegar. I just haven’t yet because we have a water softener and they say that helps more than anything in preventing limescale and mineral buildup. Although I’d still love to get it done anyways! Should definitely do it before something major happens! Just need to get off my butt and get a pump lol. Thank for the added tips! May have to make a video on something like that when I finally get everything I need! Have a great one!!!

    I have been trying to figure this out for a couple of years. We rent so, not to easy too get things taken care of. I have been watching professional You Tube videos and reading install manuals and never saw this issue addressed. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together, it was very helpful. Does anyone have any ideas on how moths get in? Thru the exhaust that goes thru the wall outdoors? I've heard numerous stories about moths. Moths? They're not worth the trouble. Also: our Rinnai is just shy of 5 years old. Any thoughts on timeframes; how long recommended between de-mothings? Anyhow, great job on the video!

      Hey there! I’m not sure how long these units typically last. We’ve been in our house for 8 years now, the unit was in when we bought the place. I can’t remember exactly when I had ours cleaned out by the pros the first time, but I want to say it was a couple years before I made this video. This was the second and only other time it’s been cleaned to my knowledge. How they get in? I’m not sure. I would venture to guess it’s like lighting fixtures. They probably crawl their way through the crack and fine a place to die. Unfortunately, it’s in the blower that causes the water heater to not work. Thank you for the kind words! I greatly appreciate it! Please drop by later on if you have to do this again so we can keep tabs on how often it’s needed to be done where you live!

    I have a Rinnai R75LSi rental from a large Canadian HVAC company since May 2011 install in the furnace room in my home basement. Do you think it be okay for me to DIY maintenance on the blower fan to prevent the Code 10? I've never have done any servicing since it was installed.

    • @dig-itentertainment
      @dig-itentertainment  4 месяца назад

      I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt. But I’m no professional lol. It just depends if you understand the risks of doing something like this. I clean mine out a couple times a year, usually as soon as I hear it getting louder than it should be just to stay ahead of it so it doesn’t shut down on us again until it’s cleaned out. If you are confident and comfortable with maintenance like this, feel free to go for it.

    • @linndoria
      @linndoria 4 месяца назад

      @@dig-itentertainment I guess I'll have to give it some thoughts before going forward with the DIY. First I'll need to safely able to turn the gas vale off next to the unit as it it currently very stiff to turn as it has not been used in a long while without damaging it. Don't want a gas leak or worst. Or is it safe enough to work without turning the gas off to the unit as long the unit is not plug-in to AC power?

    • @dig-itentertainment
      @dig-itentertainment  6 лет назад

      Hey Steve. I’ve never had to order parts nor have I tried to look any up. This was just a video I wanted to do since I had already experienced the problem before. I would start by looking into the owners manual to see if they have anything listed as to where you can buy parts, or go to the manufacture’s website. Since I don’t have any of the books in front of me at work, that’s all I can really suggest. I apologize that I’m not much more help than that, but I don’t think it will be too difficult to find what you need. If you do find something, you may post a reply to your comment to see if it can help out the next person. If I get time...and I remember...I’ll try to do some checking myself. Until then, best of luck, man!
