    Great stuff, Raz! His two winners (!) against Nadal from so low over the net qualify as DFW's "Federer moments", especially the second one, I'd say. And then they're the two shots (shown back-to-back beginning at 5:40) against Gonzalez and Murray...where he goes in with the racquet ready to play the shot but waits for _just_ the right moment to hit it so that it goes around (in G's case) or up and down (in M's case) and completely beats the player.
    If tennis was judged on its aesthetics (like diving or gymnastics, say), Fed would basically win every match he played. That it's not (and is, in fact, such an intensive and tiring athletic sport) and that he's won so much while possessing such a "rolls royce" technique is what separates him from the other greats to have played the game. Because, he's the only player in an individual sport to have *_simultaneously_** been that sport's greatest shotmaker, greatest kinaesthetician, **_and_** greatest winner* - this was in the 2004-2009 period. Since then, he's remained among tennis's most prolific winners even as he's continued to be its finest kinaesthetician and its most varied shotmaker.
    By the way, it's worth noting how very _few_ players have ever caught the Fed out using a drop shot. I don't believe the Djoker (who's only recently developed a decent BH drop shot) ever did it to Fed nor did Nadal (except occasionally on clay perhaps). The reason's simple: Fed's great anticipation and his hold-the-baseline tactics. Indeed, the *_only_* player to have outwitted the Fed is *David Nalbadian* , whose use of it during the 2005 WTF finals completely threw Federer off ... even as it taught him what a really good and well-disguised drop shot's like. As I see it, Nalby is Fed's guru (teacher) when it comes to drop shots.
    P.S: It's also telling how Fed talked about Nalby when he was asked to compare Nalby and DelPo. He said "David could make you feel (look?) small", perhaps the greatest compliment that can be given by someone who's spent the better part of his career making other players look small and feel bad (not least because it's almost always Fed who has the crowd's support).
    Here's the full quote: "With David"s style of play, you still felt you may have had a chance ... even though the problem with Nalbandian was that he could make you feel very small and very bad because he would completely outplay you from the baseline with his incredible anticipation, forehand and backhand, his understanding of the game [and] his transition game, that was maybe also excellent ..."

      Quick point : Fed had an ankle injury in the match against Nalby in '05 WTF, I'd say N's match win and success with the drop shot was primarily because of that Injury. But great comment overall, good read.

      And I believe in that comparison Fed ranked Delpo higher because of the serve :)

    The great thing about these gets is - they're all over the court. Roger's not just back at the baseline doing the splits while hitting two-handers. Sure, that's impressive...but actually running around the court hitting crazy shots from all angles is something only Roger has perfected. Others may hit the occasional amazing shot...but 2, 3, 4 times every match? Nope.

    • @RazOls
      @RazOls  2 года назад +10

      No, I’d prefer it to be like it used to be, with the US Open being the only one with a final tiebreaker. But if they’re gonna have it, at least the finals shouldn’t include a tiebreak in the final set (unless it’s the US Open).

    • @Aksriv100
      @Aksriv100 2 года назад +1

      @@Aksriv100 thats actually the perfect combo, but a match tie-break would be better off. its poor to end a great match on just first to 7 points which can easily end on luck.

    it's sad that today's fans seems to downplay present day roger about being not a good baseliner, weak era champion, not a good runner ,not mentally strong bla bla bla.... If there was the kind of media coverage then that we now have with young prime fed again, today's world would recognise what a freaking force of nature Federer was.
    Every player in history, including the big three Murray, Nadal and Novak truly admires how genius of a player Roger had been.
