Hi guys! Today I checked out Cemetery Gates by Pantera, the winner of this week's poll. I know in the video I said I was guessing this was in the 90's but I'm just now noticing the title of the video clearly says 1992. 🙈😂
Anyways, let me know what you thought of this one and also what song I should put in next week's poll! 🎵🎧

I saw pantera between 20-30 times live, I maybe saw this song performed once. This was indeed a special experience to witness live. No if ands or buts Pantera is the best band of all time and I will go to my grave insisting that the studio version of the song is the best song ever recorded. From the production to the lyrics to the masterful musicianship it is 10 out of 10 perfect. It’s a shame Phil shredded his voice but he did so to get heavier with each album which tbh is admirable most band soften as they age. And dimebag, I don’t believe in a god but I hope I’m wrong bc that man deserves eternal life. The kindest, most inclusive, most amazingly beautiful soul ever. Got to spend time with him and the boys on several occasions back in the deep ellum days. His contagious “let’s have a good time” spirit would make you forget he was in the pantheon of guitarists and the single most important person to metal since ozzy and/or Tony.

Some info on Dimebag Darrell - born Darrell Lance Abbott, he picked up a guitar after becoming a fan of Kiss in the 70's and their lead guitarist Ace Frehley... his older brother Paul Vincent Abbott also picked up a guitar, but decided to play drums so that he & Darrell could jam as kid in Texas. Their father Jerry Abbott was a country artist and had his own studio, where the first 4 Pantera albums were recorded.
Renaming themselves, Diamond Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) formed Pantera as teenagers and played clubs in the early 80's... Rex Brown (bass) and Terry Glaze (vocals) were the original band and recorded 3 albums that were released independently.
Darrell was a star in Texas already, and he won every guitar contest in the state that he had entered... to the point that they asked him not to enter anymore.
Initially a glam rock band, Pantera was becoming a party favorite in Texas... but record labels were not interested. Terry Glaze was fired (creative differences) and Phillip Anselmo (vocals) joined to record their 4th album, making them more metal-sounding... Pantera decided to take off the glam image around 1989, opting to go for a more extreme metal sound akin to Slayer and Anthrax.
That year, Darrell auditioned for Megadeth and was hired. However, he wanted his brother Vinnie Paul to join as well... but Megadeth had already hired Nick Menza on drums, so Darrell declined. Years later, Pantera opened for Megadeth on tour.
Pantera was finally signed in 1990 and released 'Cowboys from Hell'... it was a global introduction of the band, passing over their indie records... Pantera soon became a live sensation and Darrell changed his moniker to Dimebag Darrell in 1994 as Pantera's album 'Far beyond driven' went to #1 on the US charts.
Dimebag was the rockstar of the band... he was always the one partying and playing crazy games on tour... Pantera was known as a touring carnival of alcohol and food; the only band that demanded that u drink w/ the band or get fired 😂 Dimebag's friend, guitarist Zakk Wylde, described it as a "toga party 24/7"... Dimebag also popularized the official Pantera shot he named "black tooth grin" (Jack & Cola) after a Megadeth song 'Sweating bullets'... He was also constantly shelling out ca$h to make other bands do crazy things backstage.
Although he never married, he became romantically involved w/ a woman he knew since he was a kid named Rita Haney, who went w/ him to his first Kiss concert... Rita and Darrell lived together until his death in 2004 and she also took care of his legacy.
Unfortunately, Dimebag and Vinnie's constant partying on tour and Anselmo's dependence on drugs put a rift between them by 1996... Anselmo and Rex Brown often traveled together on tour because they wanted some respite from the debauchery.
By 2001, the issues had grown so wide that Darrell and Vinnie were left standing, while Phil and Rex went off to do other things in '02... Dimebag and Vinnie wrote 2 albums worth of music, but Pantera was in limbo... so, they decided to carry on as Damageplan in 2004 (Pat Lachman on vocals) ... Dimebag played all the guitars and bass on their debut album 'New found power'... Bob Zilla (bass) joined, and despite playing smaller venues, Dimebag still had backstage parties and always made time for his fans.
In late '04, Damageplan was playing in Columbus, Ohio when a deranged gunman broke in and shot Darrell... he was mentally ill and thought Pantera was mocking him and stealing his lyrics... Vinnie Paul survived, but 4 were killed before police ended the gunman's rampage. Darrell Lance Abbott was pronounced dead at the scene... Their crew said Darrell's guitar was broken in half when he fell after being shot. It was a horrible loss to everyone who knew Pantera and were fans.
At Dimebag's funeral, a number of metal bands showed up... His hero was guitarist Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen; Eddie showed up at Dimebag's funeral and gave one of his old guitars to be buried w/ him... Kiss even delivered a Kiss casket in which he was laid to rest.

Pantera rarely performed 'Cemetery gates' in concert because they didn't want to be known for that 1 hit single... Thankfully, this was filmed and there was a live version recorded for their 1997 live album 'Official live: 101 Proof'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
The song was on their 1990 album 'Cowboys from hell' - the record that introduced Pantera to the world... yes, it's a sad song about losing a girl and wishing he could be w/ her in death... Footage of Pantera's live concerts from 1990 to 2001 are quite a revelation - they were untouchable on stage and their shows would be mayhem every night!

The ending of the studio track/official video is more a scream of emotional pain from the singer being echoed by the guitar. it is omitted in the live version primarily due to the lack of a second guitar to carry on the rhythm.

It's so awesome you chose a live version over the album/music video version the live version from 101 Proof Live is also amazing but truly if a band doesn't sound better live then on the album they don't deserve to be a band at all..that's my opinion being a guitarist myself..Awesome reaction was wondering if you heard of or anything by Motionless In White? I don't know what your musical preferences are but M.I.W. was/is amazing like the songs Devil's Night and Immaculate Misconception but it's hard to justifiably pick just 2 songs lol The dualing guitar with Phil's vocals was definitely worth a listen I'm glad u went back to the album version to hear that

At least I recommended that long version, but I meant the original album version. There is a music video version which is cut short, and these live versions can't compare the studio versions. Not that they are bad at live, but I have to be honest, Phil's voice was always so worn out on these live videos...and the sound quality is pretty horrible in overall. Of course they are fun to watch, but for someone who is just getting into Pantera, I have to suggest album versions.

He does it at the end, but in a more frontal way.

Never react to a song of a live show for the first time hearing it. People that say to hear the live version first are clowns. The recorded studio version are exactly how the artists want the song to sound like.
