- she's back with another video of book recommendations & of course we have 2 themed reading lists...It's HOT GIRL SUMMER vs ROT GIRL SUMMER
So your HOT GIRL SUMMER reads are the books you can take on holiday (or vacation), read in the park & have a good time with...
and the other list is your ROT GIRL SUMMER reads - the books that are a little darker, quirky and dare i say *unhinged*. I've tried to make sure there is something for everyone in this reading list, obviously most of the books are contemporary literary fiction as those are my faves, but there are a few romance books in here too ☺️
I had a lot of fun making this video, so i hope you enjoy it! 💕

It’s totally a rot girl summer for me this summer. I’m literally rotting with covid, not the rot girl summer I want. But as soon as I’m better and can read it’ll be unhinged rot girl vibes. Loved Lapvona sooo much. Oooh I need to read Ella Baxter, I have it on the TBR, I’ve also seen her new on is out in Australia (called Woo Woo, great title) later this year. Mother in the Dark sounds fab too. Great video as always, the in between clips 👌🏻
Oh I feel for you! Unless we choose to rot in our rooms, it’s not quite the rot girl summer we want is it😤. I was there a few weeks ago (not covid though) so I feel you! Glad you loved Lapvona such a weird book, New Animal was an unusual read, I know not everyone loved it but I loved the fact it was an Aussie voice as I don’t see many popular ones getting spoken about in lit fic tbh. I’ll defo check out her next one (title is iconic! )
Adding the rot girl summer reccos to my wishlist! I fully intend on having a hot girl summer but I need that darkness and strange lit fic vibes 💅🏼
I feel you! I wanna be on the beach living my hot girl fantasy, but preferably with a weird and slightly unhinged book 😅
For the rot girl summer, I’ll also recommend Bea Setton’s Berlin. Very claustrophobic and weird ( in the right way) book. Have not read anything else by Moshfegh besides Eileen, but I’m intrigued by the grapes 😂
Thanks for the recommendation, I just looked it up and it sounds so good! I will definitely be adding that to my list. I loved Eileen, probably my favourite of hers, & I also loved Death in Her Hands by Moshfegh (but a lot of people weren’t into that one)
Every summer ends up being a rot girl summer for me 😅 most of your rot girl summer recs were already on my tbr and idk what that says about me. Now I'm even more excited to read them!
I'm currently reading Toad by Katherine Dunn and it feels very appropriate for rot girl summer. The main character tells a story about one time when she ran around the street naked, peed on a car, and smashed a store window because she was fed up with her life after her boyfriend left her and she wanted to be put away in an institution for a little vacay. Completely unhinged but I'm really enjoying it!
Okay…I’m immediately adding that book to my tbr 😂 - I’m a rot girl through and through, even if I’m being a ‘hot girl’ on the beach, I’ll guarantee I’m reading something dark and weird lol
I’m def after a Rot Girl Summer…..next summer. It’s currently winter here in New Zealand.
The consensus is we’re all rot girls ☺️💅
Great recs as always. Lapvona is my fave Moshfegh. It was revolting, but I adored it. 🍇
Thank you! Such a great unhinged read from ottessa
“There it is” 😎🕺
Def a rot girl at heart but those beach vibes are calling out (preferably overseas so I can be anonymous and just do the mysterious stranger thing, lol)
Oh me too! I need to be hot girl summering on a beach in Europe tbh 😂
@@whatraereads anywhere in Europe, truly. Haha. Though there is such a thing as too hot imo… 🫠
@@cecilialau_ very British POV regarding the heat 😂

Hello 👋 omg this is so funny! Hopefully you managed to get the gist of the video, I’m from Liverpool in the UK and we often getting told we’re hard to understand lol
I went onceeee to the beach, have been staying in and reading. I love indoors so much I got sick wile going to the groceries 😒 oh well.
I haven’t been to the beach at all lol! But then again, I do live in the UK and our summer has been rather rainy. What you’re describing sounds like my daily life haha
@@whatraereads Mia be anting but I love rain was raining today
rot girl summer all the way! mother in the dark sounds so interesting xx
Just cutely rotting in our bedrooms reading 😂
absolutely love your content and your recs !! also i find your accent really cooool haha, love from France !!
Thank you so much! 😊💕
I love dark books but didn’t like Brutes gave it 2stars , also couldn’t get on with Nightcrawling 🙈 maybe it was just too sad 😢📚
I totally get where you’re coming from and I know I’m in the minority who liked it lol! I’ve also read that quite a few people didn’t gel with nightcrawling, so you’re not on your own there. I do think it’s difficult to get through because it’s sad 😢
Here’s a recommendation for you: Winter Love by Han Suyin!
Thank you! Just looked it up and it sounds fab, I’ll definitely give that a read 🫶
@@whatraereads I’m almost done with it and it’s beautifully written!
