Well, that's the problem with Burmese definition. They consider "natives" for those who came before 19th century, which the officials think they shouldn't apply because large numbers came to Burma during the colonial era and therefore not indigenous in their rule. There was a kingdom but the inhabitants were displaced and no records. Also the fact that they have a bad history with Arakan natives, at least from 1960's. Also military have control over defense and budget didn't help at all. Strangely enough, this does not apply to Chinese or Indian.

Myanmar or Burma; what's in a name, why it's such a big deal! Burma/Myanmar would have been much better off without notorious Anglo British Colonialism. Moreover, all thy Colonizers did in their Colonies was build infrastructure such as roads and ports so that they could ship abundant natural mineral resources back to Europe to make goods. Without these raw materials, what can they do with their industrial revolution? That is what Colonialism is all about; 'divide & conquer' 'divide & rule' 'divide & loot'. [For instance, it is agreed upon the fact that Africa in general has progressed a lot more in the past 20-30 years than 200 years of Western Colonialism.] Anyhow, I'll keep my fingers crossed for Myanmar, and it's long suffering people. Long live, peace and prosperity to people of Myanmar & Indochina!

The controversy exists in German as well, where the country usedto be referred to by the Germanized version Birma, which is now almost completely discontinued due to the feeling it would be offensive.
"Birma" has been obsolete for a while, though, and was replaced by "Burma" until recently, and even now, calling it _Burma_ is quite frequent. (Der Spiegel usually writes _Burma_ , for instance.)
Krystof Dayne In fact Nu is only his name. U in Myanmar language is like Mr. in English language. Moreover bamar people don’t have first name or last name.

I call it Myanmar in English and _Birmania_ in Spanish. Although, the country's full official name in English is the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, so there is that as well. I see the situation of Myanmar as somewhat similar to Germany as there are several names for the place, but it depends on the language used inside and outside the country.
Hi my name is Min gaung kyaw. I am Myanmar. We change Bama into Myanmar because Bama is only a name for one ethnic group. When we are become freedom we have 7 enthnic groups and our languages is various and we cannot understand some languages but there is one language for one group. The language is called Bama that language is easy to use and understand for another 6 groups.so you can say that Bama means a language.when we are become an independent country w must give a name for all of us 7 groups.if we give Bama that is only good for one group and not fair for the other groups. That why we change Bama int Myanmar.
The surname of the Kings of Burma was Barman who used to be the kings of neighbouring states in India, Manipur,Kamrup ( Assam) , and Tripura. That is the reason for the name Burma, which the Military Dictators said was given by the foreigners, and they changed it to Myanmar in 1962.

The old Indian name for Burma is Brahmadesh, the land of people who worship Brahma. This is also including Thailand, Cambodia and Laos where the water festivals are still widely celebrated.
The “Our Burma Association” of multi-ethnic lords, led by Thakin Ba Thaung (1902-1980), awakened the nationalism of various ethnic groups across the country. "Myanmar" does not belong to one species. The statement of the Our Burma Association explicitly states that the country should be called "Burma" because it belongs to all ethnic groups and minorities, including "Myanmar". The name of the organization was given as "Do Burma Association" to represent all and not "Do Burma Association". It is also historically and linguistically appropriate for the name of a country inhabited by other ethnic groups, including Burma, to refer to the "Burmese" instead of the original "Burmese" instead of the original Burmese name. Its actual use has been satisfactory to non-Burmese ethnic groups as well. The official name of the Japanese-era country, which used the name "Our Burma Association", was "Burma Kingdom".
there is no relation between them liberia was founded by freed slaves so the name comes from the latin word to liberty lebanon is named after a tree which is also on their flag, the lebanon tree and lybia I think originates from a local word
You omitted part of Burma's history. When Japan attacked Burma, eastern part of Burma was grabbed by Thai Govt in collusion with Japanese Govt at that time. That brief colonization of eastern part was decolonized by Thai Govt as demanded by USA's Govt.

I'm from Myanmar. Like you said it was called "Bama" by our people. But, the word "Myanmar" has been found in Burmese kingdom's official court texts of 1700s. (Can be found at the National Museum in Yangon) "Myanmar Pyi" or roughly translate "Country of Myanmar" to include all other vessel kingdoms such as some parts of Thailand & India. The word Myanmar has been in the kingdom long ago, its not a new word. Rohinygas are not part of Myanmar.. they are Bengali because they look like them, speak their language and totally different culture from Myanmar people. Which look more South East Asian

Indian ancient texts used Burma to denote sea trade.
Also called suvarna bhumi
Myanmar or Burma; what's in a name, why it's such a big deal!
Burma/Myanmar would have been much better off without notorious Anglo British Colonialism.
Moreover, all thy Colonizers did in their Colonies was build infrastructure such as roads and ports so that they could ship abundant natural mineral resources back to Europe to make goods.
Without these raw materials, what can they do with their industrial revolution?
That is what Colonialism is all about; 'divide & conquer' 'divide & rule' 'divide & loot'.
[For instance, it is agreed upon the fact that Africa in general has progressed a lot more in the past 20-30 years than 200 years of Western Colonialism.]
Anyhow, I'll keep my fingers crossed for Myanmar, and it's long suffering people. Long live, peace and prosperity to people of Myanmar & Indochina!
Yay my country thanks Name Explain 😊
Who else is watching this after the 2021 coup?
Hi there, Ive been watching your videos since long time now and find them really entertaining + useful! I was wondering though if you could share with us where you find these awesome cartoonish maps and how you animate them! Thanks in advance!
Title correction:
*its, not it's (which is a compounded "it is").
This should be further up
I went looking in the comments just for this. I was not disappointed.
Or it's as in owned by it. When used as the car of Peter = Peter's car meaning Peter his car.
+colin Paterson The genitive of "Peter" is indeed "Peter's" (with apostrophe) but the the genitive of "it" is "its" (without apostrophe). On the other hand "it's" (with apostrophe) is just short for "it is" and not a genitive.
I was looking for this comment so hard. Yessss.
LOVE THE VID
wooooooq cool vid. thanks for this vid. :*
your pronunciation is actually really good.
we have 7 difference languages with difference stages
1. Burma
2. Shan
3.kachin
4. mon
5.chin
6.yakhai
7.kayin
Burma is ethnic group and Myanmar is country name. There are 8 egs Kachin, Kayar, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Burma, Yakhine and Shan.
I learn a lot, now I gotta go and look up the history books in more details.
Yes thank you for this video I had to try to correct someone who thought Burma was a colonial name like Rhodesia!
We have the same issue in Spanish. It can be called "Birmania"(Burma) or "República de la unión de Myanmar"(United Myanmar Republic)
I like the name Burma instead of Myanmar. It just sounds better.
Finally, someone who could say Myanmar perfectly
In srilankan ancient books considered myanmar as burma and thailand as siam and cambodia as kamboja .we have a great relations since 800 AD with burma, kamboja, siam land and maldives.maldives was also 100% buddhists' untill 1000 AD
English Empire destroyed this beautifull nation.
It's incorrect.
Actually no.
I guess...
@@sun.c.a4045 Yes,they did destroyed the land.
. But English empire didn't corrupted Myanmar at all.
Myanmar was totally ruined by its own horrible selfish presidents.
Birmania is the name given to Burma by all latin languages
Portuguese
Italian
Spanish
French
Romanian
2:44 - When including Barack Obama, it would be far from trivial to include the fact that he had spent formative years in the region and was fluent in Indonesian.
Can you do a whole video about British place names in America, not just the obvious ones like York and New York obscure ones?
The controversy exists in German as well, where the country usedto be referred to by the Germanized version Birma, which is now almost completely discontinued due to the feeling it would be offensive.
"Birma" has been obsolete for a while, though, and was replaced by "Burma" until recently, and even now, calling it _Burma_ is quite frequent. (Der Spiegel usually writes _Burma_ , for instance.)
I heard about birmania before i didn't knew where it was, now i know it's myanmar
Honestly, I'm a Burmese and I don't even know where the name Myanmar came from.
Wow, U Nu has to be shortest name ever.
Krystof Dayne In fact Nu is only his name. U in Myanmar language is like Mr. in English language. Moreover bamar people don’t have first name or last name.
Moe Myint okay wow that's pretty interesting... but, it also means that my point is still valid ;)
Krystof Dayne it could also mean my mom because burma has a lot of different languages. Its not just one language, the common one is burmese. There is also a lot of languages like falam, ngawn, haka, chin, etc.
Krystof Dayne the shortest name i know in burma is “uk”
In fact his name was just "Nu".
"U" is just a term like ".mr".
I always use the name Myanmar. Should we start calling Sri Lanka Ceylon again??? Or should we call Iran Persia or Thailand Siam?
People from Iran do call themselves Persian.
Watching this video due to interest in Burmese Buddhism and Mahasi Sayadaw.
You mean...
"The Republic of the Onion of Myanmar"?
The Burmese are going through an identity crisis.
My parents are from Myanmar
Birma is polish name of myanmar
Kacper Frankowski what ??
Polish name of myanmar is Birma
watch this video to know more: ruclips.net/video/q9rAj5KYVcM/видео.html
Kacper Frankowski thank you

in serbian burma means weeding ring
So if Burma is the informal name and Myanmar is the formal one, I imagine its like how one would use America vs the United States to describe the USA.
IM FROM BURMA
Hi my name is Min gaung kyaw. I am Myanmar. We change Bama into Myanmar because Bama is only a name for one ethnic group. When we are become freedom we have 7 enthnic groups and our languages is various and we cannot understand some languages but there is one language for one group. The language is called Bama that language is easy to use and understand for another 6 groups.so you can say that Bama means a language.when we are become an independent country w must give a name for all of us 7 groups.if we give Bama that is only good for one group and not fair for the other groups. That why we change Bama int Myanmar.
myanmar shaaadow, strolling down the avenue.
myanmar shaaaadow, all alone and felling blue.
Just a correction mate!
The king name is called Aa Naw Ra Htar or U can call Aa Naw Ya Htar
The surname of the Kings of Burma was Barman who used to be the kings of neighbouring states in India, Manipur,Kamrup ( Assam) , and Tripura. That is the reason for the name Burma, which the Military Dictators said was given by the foreigners, and they changed it to Myanmar in 1962.
Skip to 1:48 for the answer
The Burma/Myanmar 'debate' is also available in German, where the name is Birma/Myanmar.
woo I'm from Burma(Myanmar)
Love from Myanmar 🇲🇲
Can you do a video on occupational surnames/names like Carter, Baker, Sawyer etc.?
Nah we never use Burma in day to day talk. Its too alien to our typical burmese tongues.
Explain macedonia 's name
Stole the name from the Greeks. There you go. :)
Named after Phillip (of) Macedon of course. It was nearly renamed Greatland after Phillip died.
They are south slavs that live in a greek territory.
Named after the area of Macedonia which overlaps with the country.
The country of Republic of Macedonia is located in a real region of Upper Macedonia. However there are also south, west and east Macedonias that belong to Greece. So Greeks hate Macedonians for taking that name. Macedonians are Slavs however there were many Slavs in ancient region of Macedonia, mostly slaves, mercenary and servants. First Slavic alphabet originated in ancient Greece.

THEY TOOK OUR FLAG AND PUT A STAR ON IT
Let me guess. Are you from Lithuania? If so, yeah, I don't know why our country made the flag so similar to Lithuania flag. In case you're curious.
They said yellow means solidarity. Green means Peace. Red means Bravery or Determination. And white stands for significance of the citizens.
If you look closely myanmar flag is brighter if myanmar flag haven't star
🇱🇹🇲🇲
Just now... got a notification from google about this video... no comment, just the video... Why did I randomly get a notification of a 6 day old video? I'm not even subbed to this guy... and I only watched like 5 minutes of one of his videos last week... *WTF GOOGLE, KNOCK IT OFF*
Because their was a ruby the size of a tangerine.
In German news most of the time they say "Myanmar, the former Burma" ("Myanmar, das frühere Birma")
I cant stop thinking about the fact that their new flag is familiar
I live in Myanmar and My Myanmar name is Chuu Sandi Khin
Even as a Burmese I don’t know this XD
Brahma 😉 any indian here?
The old Indian name for Burma is Brahmadesh, the land of people who worship Brahma. This is also including Thailand, Cambodia and Laos where the water festivals are still widely celebrated.
@@amglitkoko8502 yeah B-)
I'm surprised this video did not blow up due to the recent coup
please make a video about the name similarities between Libya - Liberia - Lebanon! 10x
there is no relation between them liberia was founded by freed slaves so the name comes from the latin word to liberty lebanon is named after a tree which is also on their flag, the lebanon tree and lybia I think originates from a local word
Yes the tree is also known as the cedar tree.
or carmon it's not from the tree
It's name comes from the word leban
Which means milk
Referring to the white color of snow in the mountains in Lebanon
@@orcarmon9179 I could be wrong but I think freedmen (ex-slaves) were delivered to Liberia by force.
Thanks again!
If you ever going to do a video about Holland/The Netherlands, I'd be happy to help you with pronunciation ^^
You omitted part of Burma's history. When Japan attacked Burma, eastern part of Burma was grabbed by Thai Govt in collusion with Japanese Govt at that time. That brief colonization of eastern part was decolonized by Thai Govt as demanded by USA's Govt.
LOL - King Anawrhata's statue was holding a printed copies of books. Well before ( 5 or 6 centuries) German inventor Gutenberg was born.
It's called Burma where I live.
THE BRITISH ARE COMING
THE BRITISH ARE COMING
Change its name to myanmar because of ethnicity??? Tell us about rohingya!!
Adam Smith Now that's edgy asf
well they are not part of the 135 ethnicity of myanmar and they are not even a ethnicity call rohingya the are ethnicity is Chittagong they speak Chittagong and don't speak any languages of myanmar
Adam Smith I don't know how we worshipping Satan but when day of judgment we will see who's going to hell me or sociopaths like you.
Lilz no they didnt.
I like it this history im from india northeast
I have a little sadness because no one know our country(myanmar):(
But thk you for describe about my country
