Casting Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith was a brilliant choice. He does the 'cold and emotionless yet explicitly dripping with contempt for humanity' extremely well.
It might have been silly if Agent Smith was a human, but the way Weaving delivers his lines is amazing for Smith given that he’s just software programmed to imitate human speech patterns and have a basic understanding of psychology. “And you help your landlady take out her garbagggeee…”
"I've seen an agent punch through a concrete wall; men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air; yet, their strength, and their speed, are still based in a world that is built on rules. Because of that, they will never be as strong, or as fast, as *you* can be." - Morpheus.
My god the agents in this movie were some of the best agents I’ve ever seen! The matrix has so many memorable moments, and I think that the agents really stick out when it comes to those moments
@@nuclearjanitors I think that was intentional at least with how I see it. Yes, they’re still a threat compared to most red pills, but Neo himself has far surpassed their authority and threat that they’re basically meaningless compared to him. However, Smith also surpassed agents once he became “free” and became increasingly egotistical and neurotic which especially ironic for a program who deeply despises humanity and the nature of existence. Neo and Smith were like two ships passing each other in the night with how they progressed with themselves whereas the “normal” agents were just… agents. The other agents in the first movie and the upgraded agents in the sequels just exist to do their job and nothing else.
I always saw Agent Smith as actually being the most human character in the series. He's the only person who has ambition, desires to grow and better, has hidden resentments, expresses a range of emotions in a non-robotic way. There appears to be something unnatural about the humans especially in their stoicism - almost like they are carrying out a function or have forgotten how to deeply feel whereas the Agents have great emotional reserve on the surface but I would argue, like the replicants in Blade Runner, more rich inner emotional lives than the humans.
morpheus , thomas anderson/neo, oracle = trinity, thomas is a schizo locked in a cell of an asylum it is a struggle of personalities, smith represents reality and all zion stuff the other personalities that struggle to survive in his mind, the blue pill is his sedation the red is .... "don't take it" let the story evolve that's why machines, deus ex machina etc resemble brain neurons.
@@siphonophores I agree, agents of the Matrix do have feelings. It is not surprising that the Architect removed them from the system. Jones and Brown had the same codes as Smith. Therefore, new agents (unlike the first ones) tended to consult with each other more. And despite their strength, control over them was much higher. Now not one agent could be left alone without the supervision of others.
Agent Smith: You hear that Mr. Anderson?... That is the sound of inevitability... It is the sound of your death... Goodbye, Mr. Anderson... Neo: My name... is Neo.
I always loved Hugo Weaving's initial dead pan attitude, he seemed so official and procedural. His eventual progression into 'Just Smith' seemed almost natural, as his personality became more dominating, fed by an insatiable desire to become everything.
It was always my headcanon that Smith was an experimental variant of the agent program made to be more empathetic and 'human' for interrogations, strategy and stuff like that. It's just a neat concept that in the attempt to make an AI more human, Smith was slowly driven mad.
The agents are the most underrated villians in The Matrix, as they have superhuman strength, speed, agility, shapeshifting techniques, and intelligence.
I always wondered if Agent Smith was suicidal in the first movie. During the scene where he is "being honest" whilst interrogating Morpheus, Smith says that "once Zion is destroyed, there is no need for me to be here." He goes on for some time saying he wants to "be free" and wants to escape "this prison...reality...zoo." In the next movie, the Oracle says programs that have served their purpose or are being replaced with Upgrades are deleted. Did Smith know this, and if so, was he telling Morpheus that he wanted to die?
+Ty Nao Interesting. What have you found? Which opinions, observations, analysis, etc. have seen done before? This one may be a little too easy though since the movie is almost 20 years old.
Hugo weaving is a boss!!!! This was the first movie I saw him in and boy oh boy did it stick. The way he starts off all agent type but then secretly longs to leave the matrix. Gets destroyed, avoids being deleted and comes back, unplugged and very different from before. His portrayal of this character is amazing especially in the sense that you'd believe he was a program gone rogue, the conflict of what Smith wants to be and what neo is preventing him from becoming. His hatred of humans, honestly this movie would not have been the same without its iconic villain. The smug, shades wearing, badass agent Smith!!!!
As a guy who's a huge fan of the matrix I loved this episode, and as an even bigger Hugo Weaving fan I would love to see an episode about Agent Smith. Keep up the amazing work.
When Neo destroyed Agent Smith in that hallway he become more than an agent. Smith became Neo's negative double. The Oracle even stated that in the 3rd movie. Agent Smith was part of the equation of The One. Some great theories out there of Agent Smith being the actual One and not Neo.
The relation between Neo & Smith is crucial, I hope you can talk about it in the next video, the destiny of the matrix/Neo depends of this topic. Gray videos congrats
I love these movies! Agent Smith is an AI created by AI. He was a program that achieved heightened intelligence and was free of the strings he was on. I always wondered though if the agents knew that the whole Zion and matrix relationship was just another form of control for the machines?
I feel that the Animatrix is a bit underrated. Perhaps even the Matrix is comparing to the modern Hollywood standards. The Animatrix explores, in a way, the depths of the Matrix universe. Can you imagine, can you imagine what this could be if behind the franchise was Marvel or some other huge conglomerate? I mean, considering the directors would be of the quality of Nolan, Villeneuve and Wachowski Brothers? This fantasy universe, alongside LOTR's, have so much potential if treated right, like no other imo.
"Human = Cheaters Agents = Game Masters and Moderators Neo = (insertname)bug(?) Smith = Server Virus" Who really wants to be Neo? Remember, you have to die (forgetting that you're already dead anyway).
My theory behind the appearance of the Agents is that they have the appearance of previous versions of the One. Could you imagine being one of the people separated from the Matrix by the One, logging back in to free others, only to see the One (in this case Smith) wearing the suit and glasses of an Agent?
What if I told you that the scene of Morpheus saying "What if I told you" NEVER EXISTED? Look it up. The whole "Mandela Effect." Apparently the Matrix is re-writing our memories and us human beings read too many memes..
my favorite characters in the movie are the 3 original agents they are just...scary they don't use martial arts but their strenght and speed nothing else in their minds except stopping the mutiny although there is one different then the other 2...

So you’ve finally done the video on the matrix I wanted you to do and I love that scene where he says he hated the matrix it was awesome👍🏻 and I love your new background too by the way👍🏻
the Matrix Trilogy was refreshing to watch...havent seen such great movies in a while now. very great story, fighting scenes and overall acting. great could've been a movie straight out of 2018! and if you listen closely, you can learn from this trilogy too.
I would love to see what would hypothetically happened if someone in the matrix got a shotgun, made sure there was no choke on it, and fired at an agent, aiming for the belly button. Is it possible for an agent to dodge every single pellet every time?
FilmComicsExplained I think the reason Agent Smith was able to create a wall in the scene Mouse tried escape, was because Cypher gave away their location when he threw away his phone in the trash.
I don't know if you've ever seen this movie because bo one I talk to ever has, but you should explore the 2001 Bill Paxton directed and starred in movie Frailty. It's one of my favorite movies and features Matthew McConaughey's best role.
the reason Morpheus break the rule(in regard of freeing people from the Matrix) is: the people he free can become something that can become the One, Redpills are powerless against Agent
Imma asume this. When the agents posses someone. That person falls asleep. And if the agent does their job. The person is taken back home and are in bed as if they were dreaming. And if the agent is killed, the person is killed. So hopefully this helps.
It was always intriguing to see Neo and Smith fight. Neo was always very cold and machine like and smith always angry, full of rage and emotion, more human.
