Not only do they have resources to protect them built into the system they work in, but the field draws highly intelligent people, which would be another valuable resource in avoiding capture.
Also, the way OP said that Harold was calling himself a doctor without a doctorate came across weird. They're technically correct since Harold was still in training, but a PharmD is a doctoral degree and it sounded like they were implying that it wasn't. Pharmacists working in hospitals and research will be more well-versed in medications than most other doctors. Retail pharmacists earned the title too, even though being a retail pharmacist in the present is a waste of that degree.

As someone who was groomed age 11-13, it’s incredibly important to spread awareness and have people on the lookout. I’m 18 now with some friends/mutual who I’m a little hyper-protective of when it comes to keeping them away from predators. To no fault of their own, a lot of minors don’t realize the situation they’re in until it’s already happened and it’s important we protect the kids of the internet. A four year age gap isn't really the problem though...would anyone bat an eyelash at a 24 year old an a 28 year old dating? No, they wouldn't. The issue is the maturity factor. The maturity level between 24 and 28 "should" be equal but not so between a 14 year old and an 18 year old.

    • @MikaeruDaiTenshi
      @MikaeruDaiTenshi 2 года назад +18

You have to differ though. Age gaps in younger ages are far more relevant than in higher ages.
14+18 is quite rough. 16+20 is problematic to an extent, as it's legal in some countries, but that's not the point right now.
If you compare that age gap to 30+34, that age gap is almost nothing.
Now, there are couples with an age gap of 12+ years. That's totally fine if you're... let's say over 28? So 28+40? Well, if both parties are fine with it. But 14+26? 16+28? No way. Hell even 18+30 seems strange.
But maybe you get the point, 4 year gap doesn't sound that much, but within a certain range, it IS much.

I'm not actually sure, but I think their D&D group had 3 or 4 people in all, so that's like 9 PCs minimum every campaign, usually more; from some of the stories he told me, it seemed like some of the campaigns had as many as 20 or more PCs. These were usually hard campaigns with lots of PC deaths, especially since every campaign would inevitably have a few level 1 practically redshirt characters coming along, being the first adventure for those new characters.
It's actually the way I got introduced to D&D, so when I first played it with other people, I was actually surprised that most people play with only a single PC per person. I understand why now, but back then I was really rather perplexed by it; having plenty of PCs so you could keep playing if any one of them died seemed perfectly logical to me.

A gap between 14 and 18 might not seem much, HOWEVER, a 14 years old is not at the same stage both mentally and in their life than a 18 years old. This is an age in which each year represents a huge gap in personal development. It IS bad, especially when it is so obviously predatory. Everyone failed that girl in the first story, acting as though what happened to her was not worth getting upset. How is she supposed to feel valid and speak out when everyone just ignore her ? Please, if you ever witness this kind of situation, do make clear this is NOT normal, and do whatever you can to ensure the victim's safety.

Hey yall. Have to play devil's advocate here.
Being attracted to a 14 year old is not Pedophilia, it's called Ephebephillia. Pedophilia is being attracted to pre-pubecent children (usually under double digits in age). Also (coming from someone who lives in the US) there are many states were a 4 year difference (as in, 14 and 18 year olds) is legal. Also, there are many other countries (like Germany) where the age of consent is 13. (Meaning, a 13 year old can legally date an adult, 18+).
So, calling someone 18 who is dating a 14 year old a Pedophile and saying they are disgusting is your opinion (to which everyone is entitled to) but is not necessarily illegal or something you can all the cops about. Just saying, check your local laws, before calling the cops on people, because you might be the one castigated by the police, for attempting a false police report.
Now, should this be brought up to the parents/gaurdian of the younger person, absolutely! And, if the laws are in your favor, then absolutely call the cops. But, you must also protect yourselves in these situations. Because a false police report (whether you meant it to be or not) is a rather bad thing for you to be charged with.
Anyways, always keep an eye our for predators, and child groomers. And do what you can to protect children. But remember, that not all laws are the same everywhere, and you must think about your own safety (both from confronting a predator, and legally speaking).
Sorry if I sound like the weirdo in this situation. But I myself was nearly charged for creating a false police report on a 14/18 year old couple.Who, by the way are married now with three kids. And, as far as I can tell, the guy is deeply in love with his wife, and has not approached any other females romantically (of age or not).
So, keep yourselves safe out there, and learn your local laws. And, if someone is coming onto you, and you are uncomfortable with it, whether you are a minor or not, just know you are allowed to tell that person to F-off, and leave you alone. If it continues, then call the cops for sexual harrasement.

" but is not necessarily illegal or something you can all the cops about"
It's not because it's legal that it's moral or not wrong. There's a lot of things that should be legal and aren't, and a lot of other things that should be illegal and aren't. COnsent ages are one of these, adolescents should not sleep with adults, period. It's called pedocriminality, and I don't care if it's legal (age of consent 15 in my country), it's gross and should be condemned, period.
And even if we ignore the pedocriminality, all these perverts are still doing sexual harassment online, which is not legal, nor right either, pedocriminality is just an aggravating circumstance. Especially the second one, sending nude pictures without the consent of the other person is a crime in my country and punishable by a fine, and the rest is just sexual harassment.

And I never said it was a good thing or not, I simply said people should think before calling cops, cause once you call cops, you can't uncall them.
Also, you say adolescents shouldn't be with adults, period. Could you please define adult and adolescents for me, in a logically consistent way?
Like I said as everyone is entitled to their opinions, which was all your comment was. But, you seemed like you were trying to read into my motives for commenting. And, I think you got those wrong. So, just saying.

I am not trying to say the guy is right for what he did however I am looking at this logically some 18 year olds will go after 40+ year olds. it is sad that 18 is such a magic number that some one becomes and adult instead of maturity level and knowledge level playing a factor in when some one is an adult.

Im willing to give some leniency depending on the situation (like an 8 year old not reporting seeing scary man assaulting his gf, it's understandable that the kid would be too freaked out to know what to do) but a kid ops age making the excuse of "it's kinda cringe but teachers let seniors date freshman so this adult out of highschool flirting with middle school girls must be fine. I just wanna play dnd". Teachers let bullying slide in schools but he was willing to take a stand on that...between that and how he treated the admittance of the sexual assault as more of a "well I told you so" moment instead of showing genuine remorse and disgust with himself for his inaction actually leading to a person getting hurt... I have some serious issues with that op.

I just foud it bizarre to hear a 18yr old guy being portrayed as a gloom predator in his 40s. Also - i don't know the exact age frames of being minor in the country the story is taking place - but in my mind 14+ are not children - they are minors in the legal sense but children? It's puberty time, anyone in puberty thinks of himself as an adult. It's the time of sexual experiments and finding it out on your own. Again, it's not about making the guy less creepy, but i reserve the term 'child' for youngsters before puberty. Also also - it's easy to be judgemental, less easy to get off your high-moral horse - just a shoot on people constantly patting temselves on the back for being righteous or right-minded.

I understand how people feel about age gaps but the stem of the issue when dealing with age gapes is power dynamics.
18 and 14 is a little iffy especially depending how far one is into the other.
Example: the 18 year old had their birthday a month ago and the 14 year old is turning 15 tomorrow. Now by technicality that’s only three years instead of four. And then there’s the other side of the issue like weather someone started school early or skipped a grade or got left back a grade.
I feel like the way your coming at this has no nuance. The situation of a 18 and a 14 year old isn’t inherently bad, pedophilic or creepy.
Especially sense that’s literally two kids in high school. You say that 18 is a grown adult, and that confuses the hell out of me. At age 18 you are usually still high school. You are still a child. If he was 19 and she was 14 or 15 I would 100% Agee with the sentiment but 18 and 14 is iffy at best and in my opinion should be judged on a case by case basis.
This case, yes absolutely horrible. All cases? I don’t know.
Maybe the problem here is the immediate implication of sex or sexual intimacy when it comes to dating someone. But dating doesn’t always mean having sex or being sexually intimate. Romance is not inherently sexual.
If a 18 year old and a 14 year old are dating and nothing gets sexual I feel like that’s a completely appropriate relationship.

Let me change perspective on this. An 18 year-old is a highschool senior about to graduate. A 14 year old could be in 8th grade. Where I went to school, any seniors dating a freshman were understood to be doing it for the easy lay. Anything more than a 2-year gap was suspect. 18 year-olds typically had drivers' licenses, cooler friends, more money, and easier access to alcohol and pot than any freshman.
If we make it a math problem, 14 is 77.77... % of 18. The 14 year-old is barely more than 3 quarters of an 18 year-old's age.

I dont think people should judge age differences when someone who just recently became 18 is interested in dating with someone under 18 as long as the age difference isnt a large amount. I usually say 5 years is the most i'd accept, contemplating on reducing it to 4.
I think people should judge those type of relationships based off the intentions of the older side. Because immediately assuming them to be disgusting just for dating someone younger than 18 but only have a 4 year or so difference, means that my relationship wouldve never be a thing. As i dated my now fiance when she was 15 and i was 19.
I helped her escape an abusive family and changed each others lives for the better. We are currently in a strong 5 year relationship in a soon to be marriage once we have the money for the ceremony.
Judge peoples actions and character instead of just their age alone.

The common thread here is "if you have legitimate concerns about someone's behaviour, go to the authorities immediately."
The guys in the second and third stories were doing more harm than good by catfishing the people in question. It's called entrapment and will only help them if things go to court. If you're in a situation in any way similar to these stories, don't do what the knuckleheads in the stories did. Go. To. The. Authorities.

    • @ryanpeters3812
      @ryanpeters3812 3 года назад +15

Entrapment is different. It's pushing to do something they wouldn't normally do. The clear entrapment is trying to convince a guy to buy drugs, when he didn't want to, then busting him for the drugs.
In case 2, it would require context. They can be considered a sting, but it is a common tactic to utilize undercover work to get hard evidence.
Case 3, they said they weren't feeding the behavior on purpose. That's important here, as that establishes non-entrapment.
Entrapment is hard to prove, and it is usually used in favor of something that could be addictive in the long run, to guarantee them continuing breaking the law.
This wasn't that. I still think getting law enforcement to do this is safer, but this isn't entrapment.
TL;DR: Not entrapment, but go to the authorities anyways.
Counter argument: sometimes they don't help like they should. My spouse has been abused like this, but the cops just said it was all in their head. I confronted the individual and we together changed the situation, but sometimes these lengths are sadly needed.

    • @gierrah
      @gierrah 3 года назад +27

Unfortunately this is probably not the case. I would say you're wrong, because in order for the authorities to bother doing anything, they need evidence. In order to get a warrant to investigate they need evidence. Not just a claim. It often takes a substantial amount of evidence to get anything done, and if you don't have enough, they may find out somethings going on and will just be more careful with how they go about their actions. I would absolutely advise collecting all the evidence you can possibly muster before doing anything, otherwise nothing will get done. Get enough evidence to bathe in. Claim alone just isn't enough, for good and bad reasons alike.
It's also not entrapment unless you make they do something they wouldn't have done otherwise. Police conduct sting operations all the time, posing as minors and characters, and it does not help the scum in any way in court.

@@SynetheSage This. There's a reason states in the US with Romeo and Juliet laws normally set the maximum legal age gap at 4 years. I dated someone 4 years older than me as a freshman for about a year and the most harm it caused me was when the relationship ended with them ghosting me because, as I'd later learn, they were too worried about how people would see the age gap.
Relationships involving minors with age gaps within that sensible 4 year range can absolutely be abusive, but the age gap never _necessarily_ makes it abusive. It shouldn't be hard to examine the interactions between two people or just _talk_ to the younger person _about_ the relationship they're in and make a call as to whether it's abusive.
And if you do think it is abusive, let the police handle it. Never take it into your own hands. Not only would you likely do a worse job than the police and dish out a punishment which isn't proportional, but you could be wrong about it being abusive, and think of the trauma that would cause to both of the people in the relationship.

Not saying it isn't creepy but there are states where their Romeo and Juliet law covers up to a 4 year age difference. So depending on the exact wording of the law in the location they are at 18 to 14 while creepy may still be legal. Usually because those laws are in place to protect people who are in relationships which one is like 16 or 17 the other one turns 18 and the parents of the 16-17 year old does not like the now 18 year old and so reports them to the cops for statutory rape. The Romeo and Juliet law says no because the age difference is so small this is perfectly legal. It also is based around the idea of that like physiologically and mentally there is little to no difference between like a 16 and 18 year old or 17 and 19 year old. Like 2-3 years does not Magically make you an entirely different person or change you in any significant way. You are still close enough in age that there is no significant difference therefore it is fine but that's where the limit usually ends is 3 years difference, 4 years maximum. I believe it's 4 years in some places specifically to cover exactly what OP was talking about with senior's dating freshmen. The idea is probably that if you are both going to high school in the same years then there is not a significant enough difference between your ages.

I think a big disclaimer needs to be made concerning cultural bias. Legal ages vary greatly between countries, in Germany e.g., a relationship between a 14 and 18 year old would be legally ok, creepy nonetheless. I believe Japan has a similar context.
Though, in Germany once you are older than 18, anything younger than 18 is frowned upon.

I'm in the UK and the age of consent here is 16, so it's jarring when I hear people talking about flirting with a sixteen-year-old with the same level of horror they would if the person was six. I mean, yes, sixteen is young and relationship dynamics can get sketchy with large age gaps but while a sixteen-year-old might be legally a child, they're not a 'little girl' and as you've mentioned, not underage everywhere either. It's easy to forget that one country's sensibilities aren't universal or the only valid ones.
The first story was gross and that guy totally needed to be prosecuted. The second was someone thinking it was acceptable to force what they wanted regardless of anyone else and I'd hate to meet the guy RL. The third guy was gross and creepy and needed to get a clue that his behaviour wasn't welcome but having someone call a sixteen-year-old a 'little girl' was weird. Underage? Yes, in some places, but not a child in the same group as someone of six, or twelve.

Something for parents and guardians to remember, don't get angry with your children. They need to know that they won't get in trouble if they find themselves in a situation like these as that will contribute to them being hesitant to tell you. Be angry over many things but make sure they know that whenever someone is talking to them like this on the internet or IRL they will not be in trouble.

I understand the need for arbitrary lines, but guy, you're acting like turning 18 magically makes him mature and wise. He's legally an adult, but I can tell you I don't look at 18 year olds and thing, yep, they're totally mature and an adult.

Most of my friends had boyfriends that were about 4 years older than us or more at the time. This was back in 2005, though, so maybe public knowledge has changed. I can still understand why OP genuinely didn't see anything wrong with that age difference. I didn't understand I was being groomed by an older man at that age for many, many years.

Obviously a lot of the students didn't understand (we were literal children) but teachers are mandated reporters. They legally have to report illegal or concerning things that their students do/say!

"Even bad D&D is better than none" only works as long as all involved aren't creepy people trying to exploit others. Toxic is toxic.
Also, I'm playing in a one-shot where I'm playing two characters - twins, brother (Psi Warrior Fighter) and sister(War Domain Cleric), telepathic, close but not close like Jamie and Cersei. It's fun as a one shot but not something I'd want to do long term.

    • @ccaagg

Does it ever work? I don't think it does. I'd much rather be doing something else with my time than committing to an at-best _slightly_ enjoyable D&D campaign. Bad D&D is downright _depressing_ to play.
Any D&D that you feel is bad D&D is a huge waste of your time. People should talk it through with the group and see if it can change so _everyone's_ enjoying it. Failing that, if you're still not enjoying it, just stop playing. It really isn't worth the time. The other players will still be able to have fun without you.
