    Beautiful Harmony. I'm a rock and roll guy but I've always appreciate country music, especially before the 90s. The Carters were a force in country music at that time and Hank Williams escorted his career was, a hell of a musician and songwriter who left this Earth too early. It's almost like six degrees of separation. You have the Carters you have Hank Williams and you have Johnny Cash marrying one of the Carter sisters. This was an instrumental and Powerful time for country music period and when it comes down to it most music has it's connected in small and big ways. The PBS documentary on country music a few years back shows us that. I've rarely seen any clips on RUclips with Hank Williams or the Carters. This was special

      Nope! Anita could sing, and she played the guitar passably well, but it was Helen, the oldest sister, who was the most musically talented of the three!! She not only sang backup, she played the piano, autoharp, accordion, guitar, and mandolin, all at the professional level, and she wrote all of the group’s vocal arrangements; when writing those arrangements, she mastered the art of sending one voice after another into the lead, all within the same verse, woven so seamlessly that you have to really know their voices to be able to discern who picks up the lead, and where. It gives the group their distinctive sound when they all sing together, not just backing up one of the sisters. I’m sure Helen could have sung lead all the time, bc she had a beautiful voice, too, but her personality kept her in the background.

When Hank joins in she initially won’t make eye contact but he does. When she does look him in the eyes, I don’t think she seen the famous Hank Williams anymore, she seen a a brokenhearted man who had just ran into his true love with another man. And that’s when it really comes together. I don’t think he let very many people see that brokenhearted soul that lived inside of him and wrote all those beautiful songs. maybe Hank let her see that tortured man for a few seconds. Sometimes I wonder how many more of those beautiful songs that could have been. Anyway, just the opinion of a man that has loved Hanks music for almost 70 years.

      Anita was decidedly _NOT_ the most talented of the three Carter Sisters. Historians rate Helen as the best overall musician/instrumentalist of the three, and I agree, wholeheartedly. She was also the most invested in keeping their history alive, and with her mother recorded songs for the Smithsonian. Anita may have had the best voice, but Helen chose not to carry the lead voice and instead sang harmony, and she was exceptionally good at playing the accordion, mandolin, guitar, piano and autoharp. She also was a master arranger, and did all of the arrangements of the songs they sang. I won’t go into technicalities for a vocal arrangement skill she was master of....you can read her Wikipedia article if you want to. Just bc a girl has a pretty face and a pretty voice doesn’t automatically translate to talent!

    • @dickwarren5087
      @dickwarren5087 3 года назад +14

      @@voraciousreader3341 Well, I sure as hell ain't gonna get into a debate about whether the Carter sister with what you describe as "the best voice" of the sisters, was the most talented of them. You say that Helen was more talented in playing various musical instruments and in the composing and arranging of music. I have no reason to doubt you. Heck, for all I know, one of the others may have been more talented with keeping the books or a more talented cook. But, I think we are talking about singing here. And if having the best voice is not the criteria for most talented singer, I'd sure like to know what "decidedly" is. It's really all a matter of opinion, anyway.
      I will tell you this, when it comes to considering opinions of experts, historians are way down near the bottom on my list of expert opinions on musical talent. How other musicians view the sisters would carry a lot more weight with me than how historians rate them on musical talent. One other note: how much you want to bet that Maybelle had a lot more to say about which sister would take the lead vocals than either Helen or Anita.

      @@sharonrobinson3186 My point is that only white, straight men are nostalgic for America's past. The rest of us remember being discriminated against and subjugated and are therefore appreciative of what little social progress our country has made. Racist simpletons, afraid of change, minorities, immigrants, science, reason, atheists, gay people, anyone better educated than themselves, anyone who is eloquent and well-spoken, and anything they don't understand-which covers a lot of ground-long for times in which the bar was low enough that they could crawl over it. As a full-blooded Cherokee with a PhD in stable isotope geochemistry, I'm both better educated than most hillbillies and cognizent of their lack of mental ambition. Also, I actually know the difference between communism and socialism, which they consistently confuse while commenting from their double-wides.

    Thank you for posting this, Tonto. I just want to point out that the fellow playing guitar is Chet (Chester) Adkins. Mother Maybelle Carter recruited him and refused to let him go to any other band. For a good time, I recommend the album "Chester & Lester"...it is Chet Adkins and Les Paul (He invented the electric guitar and modern recording methods).

      atkins not adkins. adkins was the diet person. Chet Atkins. I flew up (my arms are still killing me) the problem is all of them in the video were gone. But Flo wanted me to go to church and she was going to take me where AP met Sarah. I was not prepared and had to get to the plane. worst mistake I ever made. Carter fold was great. Sarahs house still sits to this day but its been 20 years I assume its still there. Maybelle watched over the girls like a hawk and almost killed Hank Williams when he almost run off the road with them she said "dont you ever call me mother again" he was the source of mother maybelle. Maybelle especially disliked Jimmie Rodgers who she viewed as a drunk and played grab ass with the girls. They did not meet at the Bristol Sessions but they did when they made the recordings of meeting each other. and she didnt like it. The mother of them all was a bit different when asked about AP father she said "when you get run through the briar patch so many times no way to know who stung ya"

    I am 64 years old and was maybe just born when Anita Carter was singing on these shows. Especially in these color videos I am taken back by her beauty of looks, voice and humor! If I were her same age she would not have had to sing Making Believe!!! And she did not have to have a face put her by make-up people, her face was already beautiful with out any help. But of course her real beauty is her simple dressing, her personality and the way she carried herself. Pure attraction. Women dressed in long dresses and no showing of skin are what is really sexy for me, she has nothing to prove to anyone and is sure of herself!! That is what I've seen in the few videos of Anita Carter. I'll bet too she was a good practical joker when given the opportunity!! Laughter is always good even if I am being laughed at for humor!!!
