  • Owner John Passmore tells us why he picked a 1973 Rival 32 as home for his single handed adventures. We caught up with John in Haslar Marina before he set of on his latest trip across the Atlantic to Grenada.
Famed as the man who spent the first lockdown writing his book, Old Man Sailing, as he drifted alone in the Atlanic for more than 40 days.
Please share. Copyrights. Bob Aylott, My Classic Boat. Extra photos John Passmore. Once again thanks for watching and making our channel the most watched classic boat channel in the world. 6million viewers can't be wrong.

Thank you so much for putting this on, when we were getting our boat ready in North Carolina there was a Rival 32 down the dock, that was just like this one, so there are two of them at least. The last we heard of that boat, named "This Boat" it was in Cape Town, not able to leave due to some government inspection that found the rudder faulty. I doubt it, and I hope Jim was able to escape and continue to Australia. We based our boat in Grenada for several years and it is the nicest place in the Caribbean, do run up to Carriacou, there are people there that still can saw down trees and make boats that will take you anywhere.

The Rival designs by Peter Brett were a development of the fabulous sea-boat the Dee 25 (25 foot WL) on which I started sailing in 1970 as a lad, my father having fitted out and decked her in the front yard over 3 years. Similar internal layout works very well at sea.

As a teenager in the early 70's with the bug to sail around the world I went onboard the Rival 32 at Earls Court and immediately thought this is 'my' boat. John Noakes was onboard too having a look, only difference back then was he could afford one and I most certainly couldn't!
I ended up with a much bigger 32 footer, a steel Tahitiana.
Let's see who ends up being the oldest circumnavigator...?

According to the plans available on the Rival Owners website the central doorway was an option on the Rival 32. I guess not many were built as I have not seen another one but I guess it was a design someone requested of designer Peter Brett. My Rival 32 is the offset version but has perfectly ample berths in the saloon by virtue of there being no lockers where John has his as a backrest.

Still looking for my 32 footer. The joke is on me. When the universe was handing out dreams to all the newborns, somehow mine got mixed up and went to John on The Rival 32. I think the quantum effects was responsible. I also was an old news reporter, also sailed a bit on my own 33 footer, can,t supervise anyone, bonked my back when I was 66, happy with my own company. Yes John, I think our dreams got mixed up. So if you're directly opposite my meridien, I'd be happy to swap places.
