Sebastian is clearly a depressed sort of guy, so that’s important to know before getting involved with him. Sometimes he gets up super early and does chores on the farm. He also makes me coffee and gives me lots of kisses! He’s hands down my favorite spouse. 🥰

Sebastian's work IS important to him. Did y'all forget he admits he wants to make a game pretty early in your budding relationship with him? He feels like he can't because he's constantly compared to Maru and Demetrius would judge him for it/make him feel lesser. He feels stifled and creatively trapped at home. Him finally being able to focus on creating a video game is a HUGE thing for him. He's able to pursue his true passion at last and it's thanks to you, his spouse. That's the furthest thing from a downside.

i've only ever seen the dialogues on the wiki and not myself, and honestly the low heart dialogue is so sad. shane starts drinking again, sebastian picks up smoking again, abigail wonders if sebastian was the right one for her instead, krobus isn't really a spouse but he'll start wondering if humans and monsters really can be close to each other. it's all just really sad, the farmer can be such a menace lol
Same! It's said in the game wiki that your relationship decreases by 20 points if you don't have any contact with the spouse. It's kinda same irl, although less mechanical.
For me... I just feel bad for Haley. She gets so dumped on so much, but no one actually takes the time to see what she actually does. Despite what they said on the list, she actually has a huge character development arc, it's just not as obvious as someone like Shane, but it's there when you talk to her.
Krobus won't call anyone else out by name and tell you they'd make a better spouse (well in his case roomate) AND THE HUGGING AND HIS MOVIE THEATER IS SO ADORABLE

She is pretty much oblivious to it which is no surprise considering the fact that Clint isn't making any obvious moves. For her to reject someone who doesn't even propose anything to her or even has any mentionable interactions with her would be very strange behaviour.
I feel like there should be a mod where you act as a go-between for the two of them. You can choose to get them together, tell Clint she isn't interested, or whatever else. It just doesn't seem very fair to leave Clint hanging like that when you know full well what's going on. Basically, I'm shifting the blame here. Emily shouldn't get any hate for being dismissive to Clint, _you_ should get hate for being entirely capable of helping to alleviate the situation and yet doing nothing and allowing it to fester.
Harvey. You really skipped an integral part of his story line. He is an adult like probably over 35. He is probably the oldest bachelor he spent a long time getting his medical degree. He is really gratefully that you appreciate him for who he is and his interests. He isn't really insecure so much as just aware that he is the oldest bachelor in a small young community. Idk. I think he is sweet and he cooks you breakfast. I wanted to be a pilot too so maybe we just like the same things lol. I think Alex donating a TV to the Saloon makes sense as a sweet idea when you consider his Grandfather really likes the TV in his house. Seriously, George only goes to Yoba religious ceremonies and the doctor, so maybe Alex is trying to get him to socialize more?
The only problem there is that George can't go to the saloon. Unless there's a mod (there's probably a mod) that addresses this, the saloon entrance is up a small flight of steps. George will never get to see that TV unless Alex carries him up the stairs. I do like your thought process as to why that's what Alex would want to do for the town, though.
i liked the event because he never had a relationship with his father, and he probably wanted to help the other characters develop a better bond with their parents

Clint just doesn't reveal any romantic feelings towards Emily. That doesn't make him a stalker but you can't expect to have a relationship with someone without making a move I mean he gives her an amethyst but he should be more personal about it. He even gives up if your friendship is high enough with Emily which isn't what I think a stalker would do.
That's not what the video was saying. Their point is that Emily seems to know Clint is obsessed with her but just kinda pretends she doesn't. She should probably just tell him she's not interested. Personally, I can't really fault Emily if she really is willfully ignoring Clint's crush. I've had a friend who was very obviously in love with me and while i guess the idea of a guy being shy and timid about it sounds really wholesome and so sweet and "aw hes trying his best" it actually most of the time ends up feeling creepy. While yes, the morally correct thing to do is to outright say "I'm not interested" You find yourself conflicted because while it makes you deeply uncomfortable you don't want to hurt your friends feelings, especially if you've known them your whole life like emily has, seeing as theres only at most 30 people in the town.

As a person who has been in this position a few times, even when I have told them I am not interested, they refuse to get the hint. I have even been in this position as a married person and make that known and they still are creepy and untoward. I admittedly have little sympathy for guys like that. I struggle to have respect if I can't be a friendly person without being worried that I am leading them on somehow.
On top of that, if they haven't outright said anything to you yet, a lot of people fear it can come off as presumptuous. Even if you're almost 100% sure they like you, there's that little doubt in the back of your head telling you that you could be misreading things.
Agree with this wholeheartedly. Another thing to point out, the fact that Clint regularly visits the bar where Emily works at. From Emily's POV, Clint is the creepy customer that thinks your hospitality means you're interested in them, but you also can't outright reject them because you're supposed to be professional.

AGREED. It's clear that they didn't really pay attention in her arc very well because it is stated that her parents are overseas, so the family is rich and she's not just leaching off of her sister. With the comments about her being selfish... So is Sebastian in many of the same ways, and he never really takes back the stuff he says about Maru, meanwhile Haley later on will praise her sister [albeit with a 'don't tell her I said that'.] Which, don't get me wrong, I love Sebastian, but it feels like they're extra critical of stuff Haley does that other characters ALSO do. And the whole comment about a Joja run being the easiest to romance her is so weird. Because... One single item on her 'loved items' list is cheaper at Joja?? Really? And it's not the item itself, but the seeds for that item? Literally showing their bias with that.

Haley does make progress. she embraces her love for photography and is a wonderful character. She is a great friend a kind girlfriend and a amazing wife. She stars of in the game as mean or rude and fights with her sister and complains about her chores but later there friends and Emily and Haley trying to understand each and other. I don’t get why people call her dumb or a brat she is a very kind character who try’s her best to change Haley is a very good friend and a wonderful person when you get to know her. But I do have to say she has a bad first impression
after i decided to romance her i found out how sweet she actually is. at first because of this video i was left with the impression that shes solely driven by materialism but the more i talked to her the more i realised how thoughtful she is. she was extremely sad when she lost her grandma's bracelet, in that same dialogue she reacts badly if you choose the option to buy her another one. she has lines where she says that she has started liking the smell of dirt because we're always around. i think that she's and extremely sweet girl and i wont stop defending her because he did her dirty in this video.
I can't abide the Leah slander! I don't think its hypocritical of her to be upset with you for punching someone. The problem she had with her ex was that they were too controlling and abusive. I don't blame her for not wanting her next partner to be that way either. Stepping in and punching her ex for her just makes you the controlling one. Her independence is the most important thing to her, which is why she moved to Stardew in the first place. Letting her stand up for herself is more important to her than you "defending her". The punch isn't the issue, its you not letting her deal with her ex on her own terms.

I regularly pick Shane because he's honest. He doesn't know how to raise Jas so you know his parenting skills from the start, but he loves the chickens and animals. Also, he's realistic in that his depression is never "cured" by your love for him, but he keeps trying and apologizes often for his failures, whether actual or self-perceived. He isn't perfect husband material unless you love him, and that's kinda all he needs.
very true. a lot of people dislike him as a spouse because he "doesn't get better," but honestly he does, but it's not like he's going to be all better overnight, if he were it'd just be unrealistic. i feel like he's a very accurate portrayal of a depressed person as someone who struggles with depression, and i feel like a lot of his haters are people who just don't understand. not that that's always the case, of course, but it feels like the people who are mad because they can't "fix him" don't realize that people don't need to be fixed.

Sometimes I see Shane haters that will say he’s better as a friend, but also say that Shane likers are weird because we all want to “fix” him and it drives me absolutely crazy, because so many of us do understand we aren’t fixing him, but we see his growth through growing to be friends with him, we see that ofc he’s still gonna struggle with his depression and anxiety and marriage wasn’t a quick fix for it. But also for me with his alcoholism I see people hating him as a marriage candidate and saying he shouldn’t be marriageable because he needs to go to therapy and work on himself first (and he DOES start doing that before marriage is even in the picture) but him recovering from his addiction being through quitting cold turkey, when he could very well be pursuing a healthy relationship with alcohol instead. It shows me that people that hate on him as a marriage candidate don’t really understand mental health issues or addiction because even people dealing with those things still deserve love and aren’t incapable of having romantic relationships. It really does seem like they’re the ones that expected him to suddenly be better overnight than those of us that like him and pursue him for marriage.
That would be Shane. He's the only other bachelor(ette) with a birthday before the flower dance, his loved gift can be bought or easily made, and he likes salmonberries which are super common.
@@david2869 I love shane, but this video is right, there are writing inconsistencies as if he didn't go through a major change and his self sabatoging hate comes back a lot as a result, but what us consistent is that he never wanted his problems to become anyone else's, even when he fails at it at times. And he does have a small story element that references the farmers story, but it's pretty small. It may be easier to give shane beer mechanically, but if the player doesn't want to do that, they can buy pizza. It takes a little more, but I like that they give me that option.

She looked so helpless, the poor thing.” Shows appreciation for her sister: “I talked to my sister for a while last night. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. You know, Emily's not actually that weird. I guess we have more in common than I used to think. Don't tell her I said so.” She even improved upon herself at times and gives nice advice: “I should start reading some books instead of magazines. It's good to learn things, isn't it? I only ever look at the pictures.” “If you stay in the sun a lot it will make your hair lighter... But you don't want to get sunburnt, either. I just want a healthy amount of sunlight. Everything in moderation, right?” and finally, she is a considerate wife: “It's okay. I know we can't have a honeymoon, since your farm needs to be taken care of. I'm a farmer now, too!” She even likes kids at 10 hearts: “Oh, hi [Player]! Do you like kids?” Plus the Charity event is for Vincent and Jas' School Supplies. So, yeah, she's mean at first, but if you're willing to give a very toxic Shane a chance, then you can give the little blonde a chance too. But it's your personal tastes, so it's fine! I just wanna bring fair points up about Haley, that's all! Have a good day! (Sorry for the length, I try to make this as concise as I could. haha!)
I personally don't really like Haley, but it does tick me off a bit that some people literally just make up reasons to not like her. I don't have a reason to dislike her and I'm not gonna make up one just to be petty. I can understand how someone would like her. maybe I'll warm up to her eventually lol.

I don’t think Emily is at fault there at all but I do think that it’s easy to misinterpret Clint’s behaviors. There is only one bar after all. Not much else for someone to do in town after work. And he has self esteem issues which is why he only really pines for her from a distance. I think the one event scene with the hiding in the bush is the most commonly misinterpreted scene for Clint though.

I picked Elliot; the choice was obvious for me as I'm also a writer, plus I love that he's mature and a romantic. Sebastian, Sam, Maru, and Abigail just seemed a bit too young. Their dialogue made it sound like they were teens rather than 20-somethings.
Yeah, I'm an Elliott fan aswell. Out of the three characters I romance he is usally my favorite. I think Sam is espicially immature in his heart events, I wasn't attracted to Sebastins character archetype, Maru was probably a fourth for me but she felt a little snobbish, and I felt the only thing Abby really had going for her was 'gamer' purple hair rebel type thing. That left the other options kinda slim. Shane has his whole set of issues so I approach him more as friend in my later playthroughs, Emily was mature enough but I didn't feel like I really clicked with her character enough to marry her, Haley and Alex both had a *lot* of growing up to do so I usually take the Shane Approach with them aswell, I found Penny pretty boring and didn't like the fact ypu had to lie to her to gain her affection. So now the only characters I really romance are Elliott, Harvey, and Leah. I think they are all the right amount of grown up and don't rely on you too much in the relationship. Elliott is the eccentric but lovable DramaQueen, Harvey is the introverted and dependable sweetheart, and Leah is the free-spirited creative who you know you can always count on for entertainment. Elliott's my personal fave.
100% agreed. i like sebastian a lot but knowing that he wants to get out of stardew valley and move to the city, i never want to make him stay in town by marrying him. he and the rest of the young adults feel like they have a lot of life to live still before they settle down
Gotta disagree about your ranking for Sebastian. :P He’s actually pretty easy to gift to if you’ve already befriended Linus (he loves sashimi!) and just remember he usually comes out at night, during rainy days, and goes to the saloon on Friday. Also I’ve never taken his comments about the money the farmer makes to be like that? I’m more than happy to let him do his ‘work’ as a hobby when he moves in with me too. It’s not necessarily lazy of him. And he often comments abt taking care of the houses pipes and whatnot during winter or just before winter iirc. He’s had a pretty rough life with his family imo. He likes his space but you can tell that he really didn’t like being in the basement back home. His step dad def plays favorites with him and maru and Robin doesn’t really do anything about it. It’s very easy to see how depressed he is and I feel good about taking him away from that environment. He’s also pretty happy about being a parent, going so far as to talk about adding a sidecar to his motorcycle for the kids once their old enough. As a husband he still needs some space sometimes but always reassures the farmer that he still loves us if he’s going to spend the day away from the house. Also breaks my heart how often he has bad dreams or just can’t sleep at all. He’s definitely my favorite bachelor in town and I find it hard to NOT date him on new files just because I don’t want him stuck with his default household forever…
I relate to him so much, I marry him every time. He is so sweet and affectionate as a husband, and if I'm making more than enough money for us to live off of it's only fair that I let him do his passion project that he has always wanted to do. Not every marriage is about both partners working for money and ignoring the other's goals in life

But then I actually like all of the spouses except Shane which is only because of the alcoholism. >.> not really Shane’s fault entirely. I feel like he is an ideal partner for me because he needs as much alone time as me but still knows how to be sweet. One of my favourite moments with him is when he tells you that you were mumbling in your sleep and seemed scared but admits how it was kind of cute and he is blushing when he says it and of course the keeping frogs.
The best part of being in a relationship like this you can grow into a couple that can get alone time together, it's pretty serene having one person that understands the social burn out so much that you don't get burned out with each other. Also on another note not only is Sashimi easy to get to romance Seby, there are shiny rocks that he likes getting, too. these are also fairly easy to stock up on. Frozen Tear being a loved gift and Quartz being a liked one.

I’m on my first play through and I’m with Sebastian now. I definitely plan on making new saves to marry each of them (maybe other than Shane) because I love them all. The only reason I wouldn’t marry Shane is because it makes me sad to see him get worse instead of better, I want to keep him where he’s at with 8 hearts
You missed that Sebastian is also a great dad!! We have one kid right now (Claudia) and all he does is gush about her and how he’s already taken care of her for the day and telling me not to worry about it :) he has his flaws but he’s a very attentive and loving father (probably because his fatherly figures weren’t the best :c )

I'm reminded of a quote from Rochfoucauld that states “None deserve praise for being good who have not the spirit to be bad: goodness, for the most part, is nothing but indolence or weakness of will.” The "good" marriage candidates don't show any real capacity for being mean or nasty. Haley does, but she becomes good, making her more human than the rest. She has the most drastic change throughout your relationship with her, going from spoiled, self-centered, and obsessed with possessions and fashion to much more down-to-earth. She becomes sweet, charitable, and not only caring towards you, but towards Emily and several other villagers. Plus, she's the easiest to marry year one, so I always end up with her.
@dripgang.2 Oh, she is. I don't think any other candidate puts on a fundraiser to help other members of the village. And it's helping the education of the kids, which shows both interest in their future and her love of children. So she's possibly a better parent than most of them as well.
lol, he was the first one to intrigue me when I first started playing. I'm drawn to the happy-go-lucky characters that are just upbeat and friendly. I enjoy other characters that have a more rough exterior (Sebastian is a good example. he's my all-time favorite spouse.) but there's a certain charm to it. you just can't beat genuinely good people.
Sam had a great personality, but I just cannot stand his hair. It’s to the point where I can’t even take him seriously because he looks like a dbz character

I always thought that Emily thought that you bought the emerald from Clint's store, and that's why she said she didn't care where it came from, as in she doesn't mind that you "bought it" instead of finding it.
Plus Clint is a coward about going into the mines and getting anything himself, including the amethyst. He's even a coward about giving it to her himself. If Emily knows him at all she knows he did nothing to get that amethyst, it was all the player.

About Alex: in his heart event when he tells you he would like to read more, he also says it's difficult for him. Plus, he's always working out and is distressed in winter because people stay at home doing boring stuff. It's just speculation, but I think that this is way of the game sugesting he might have ADHD - the hyperactivity plus having difficulty to read. And it's ok to not like reading. Books are awesome, but they don't define our intelect.
i completely agree, i feel like many people at some point say they would like to read more but eventually realize it's not something they like to spend a whole lot of time doing. it doesn't mean he's a bad person for not forcing himself to read for hours on end when he doesn't like it. many people don't find the joy in reading books until they reach a certain age or maturity, or experience a lifestyle change. everyone has their own life path, you're not a bad person or unintelligent for not having reading as a hobby :)
After marriage, he also says "I think I might start reading books. I don't want to become stagnant now that I'm a married guy!" so he's clearly still motivated to read or at least try to
I see the punching heart event differently. Leah is strong and doesn't need you to stick up for her. Plus how would your character know if this Kel needs an actual punch in the face. Yeah he's a creep, but the details are for Leah to know and deal with. In a nutshell, you should support her, not speak(punch) for her. :)
Ye most of the isolated arguments and kind from day one could be made about other people I think but Leah is my favourite because she doesn’t care about what other people think of her but still cares about them
I am against hitting people in general BUT I feel there is a big difference between you hitting someone you have a history with, versus someone else hitting someone you have a history with but they do not
Also, as someone said in another comment, Kel was a controlling and (at least emotionally) abusive partner to her. That colours how she sees your action, no matter how good your intentions. That’s why she describes it as “violent” when you punch them, even though if you don’t punch them she does. When she does it, she’s asserting her independence in the face of someone trying to control her. When you do it, you seem like another violent person being possessive of her and fighting off a competitor. Who knows, maybe she has some bad memories of Kel getting violent with people who got too close to her and you triggered those memories.
Sebastian is a sweetheart for my character. I keep him happy by talking to him every day, give him his favourite meal every day because it's the easiest thing to make and he helps water my crops and fills up the cat bowl. He is a really nice guy when you keep him happy.
She does say nice things about him at times but they imply that she isn't aware of his crush on her. Emily does live pretty much in her own world, after all.
I also think had Clint just given Emily a gem, then He would have been infinitely more attractive to Emily. People just want some real effort dang it! LOL 😂

I'm so glad Elliott made it into the good tier. I feel that this fandom, and a lot of popular stardew youtubers, while I love their content, just give Elliott an unfair assessment because he can be isolated from the rest of the town. He is so often called pretentious when that just isn't true, in my opinion. To be pretentious is to have the intent of trying to sound smart, and thinking you are better than everyone, which could not be further from Elliot's character. He is so humble and sweet, apologizing if you say that farming is hard too in one of his heart events, and just being kind all around. For Pete's sake, if you marry him, he will tell you all about setting aside his pride and just going ape on the festival food the following day when the festivals arrive. Would someone who is pretentious be as goofy and lovable as him. Yes, he is a drama queen, and yes he uses flowery language and big words (and I might be biases because I am dramatic with flowery language too. That's what makes a writer), but that adds so much to his charm. Sorry for the humongous rant. I just love Elliott, and hate how unfair a lot of people are to him because he uses big words sometimes. He deserves so much more than the hate he gets for no reason!

I just couldn't. It was nice to see him get better with my help, but it almost felt manipulative marrying him after all of it. Elliot is carring and a total goof! I love his passion for writing, his tentivness, honesty, and ngl he is easy on the eyes 👀. Overall, he is for sure under appreciated, and I will choose him a third time when the time comes 😊
I feel like it’s really unfair to put Abigail as being morally gray for expressing her unhappiness when the player doesn’t treat her well, especially after praising her for her open communication not even thirty seconds beforehand. If anything, I think that makes her an emotionally intelligent person for expressing the way she feels rather than stifling her emotions and just letting them fester. Not to mention the fact that you as the player have to be amoral in the way you are treating her in order to even get those dialogues. I have been married to Abigail for years in game and she has been nothing but sweet and super helpful on the farm!! Plus once you have a kid with her she is really involved and will often tell you, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of [child name] today, I know you have a lot of important work to do on the farm!” She is encouraging and appreciative, not to mention she in one of the only marriage candidates besides Sam who is nice and approachable from day one, unlike Haley or Sebastian (both of whom i love very much and have married in previous playthroughs, but I didn’t find either of them as good of a spouse as Abigail).
As a fellow Abigail fan all i'll say is: Well said. As for expressing unhappiness others spouses do it aswell but it requires to neglect/be mean towards em.

I can see someone disliking Alex when playing as a female farmer. That said, letting Alex be gay/queer totally transforms his arc from just getting over his casual sexism to realizing that he was raised in a lot of toxic masculinity and never really allowed to be himself. It's not just about how he treats others, but also how he treats and accepts himself and stands up to the influence of his father and grandfather.

Yeah, the reasoning given for his placement don't make much sense to me. He takes care of people's health, a very important profession given that there are several elderly people as well as a dangerous mine and forest where monsters hurt people. Iirc there's a dialogue that suggests he has trouble making ends meet and would make more money in the city but decides to stay in Pelican town regardless which shows altruism. And so what if he charges money from the player when he's knocked out, those medicines he uses to save your life aren't free and the price he charges is very modest anyways; it caps at 5000 gold which is the price of 8 pizzas in the saloon. Wouldn't you be willing to pay the equivalent of maybe 80 dollars for saving your life? He even lowers his fee if you can't afford it implying he's paying for the meds out of his own pocket so as to not make you go into debt!
Ngl, the cons against Maru sound pretty....petty tbh. Like to me it makes sense that my partner would want to use their gifts to help my work, and it makes sense that she wants you to spend time with your kids, as she comes from a family that has one kid an isolationist for the vast majority of the game.
Take it from someone who was in a relationship with a person who thinks they are better than you, I can see why Maru would be gray tier, she is amazing overall but small comments like hers if you do not agree with her can really eat at a person especially if you are trying to do what's best for your family and business. Its a bit petty yes, but I think that is a great word for some of the comments she says to us as well. I think of the gray area as being the marriage candidates that just need marriage counseling. They just need a 3rd person to be an outside voice of reason to help in the disconnect in the marriage. So nothing detrimental per say but something that can be worked on :)

Yeah, people with higher intellect than the norm can be quite condescending, for the average people that is. They are straightforward and most often than not, they are always calculative than supposed to. That's why pretty much a lot of them are isolated and aloof, after all they are always misunderstood.
yeah, as someone who likes maru and sebastian but isnt really in love with them as characters, i feel like its weird to put her down so hard when she's really just trying to help you out the best she can with her gift, even if the channel here doesn't think she's wording it the best... maybe im more sensitive to this because of a lot of racism ive seen from mods and just fans of the game in general though, really sad to see that in a usually pretty wholesome game with one of the cutest bachelorettes imo :(
Well I went with Shane because his backstory really pulled at my heart strings. We have a good marriage and I haven't (so far) found it difficult to keep him happy. Gifts of pizza and coffee now and then probably help. Plus, he often feeds the animals for me and gives me pepper poppers.
Harvey is one of the only people i have married who actually seems to acknowledge that you are working hard. also the fact that (im assuming) he wanted to be a military pilot but couldn’t then got his doctorate instead is incredible admirable and shows that he’s very smart.
TW: Suicide, alcoholism My first pick was Sebastian, but seeing how hard it was to gift him stuff, I went for Shane instead. Now...at this time, I was clearly an alcoholic myself. I would drink every night to the point of blackout, sometimes causing my family members to drag me screaming to the hospital because my behavior was so terrifying. I would scream about wanting to die or how much I hated myself. And yet just a few days later, I would voluntarily ingest that poison again. But I wouldn't admit I was an alcoholic. Shane's story hit so close to home for me. And it's disappointing that when you marry him, you have yo use a mod to make his room NOT littered with his vice. I did eventually get help from a rehab center, and while I continued to sneak alcohol at least once a week, it paved the way to where I am today: 1.5 years alcohol-free, and a better person than ever. There's something about forcing yourself to examine your habits, behaviors, and their effects on people that raises your empathy levels and makes it easier for you to eventually tackle ALL kinds of conflicts. I'm still not perfect, and never will be. I still have suicidal days, and I will never get rid of my depression and anxiety. But, thank you, Shane, for being a mirror of me, showing who I was. And who I could be 💖 EDIT: Everyone is so nice and encouraging, it makes my heart hurt! 😭💖

Sebastian is a great spouse for me. Needs space sometimes, has interests I can relate to and is a kind person (the frog scene was too cute, I encountered that a few days ago for the first time). Sometimes he waters the crops or feeds the animals, none of which I like, need, thanks to sprinklers and upgraded animal huts, but it's nice anyway! He even seems to improve his mental health once moved in with you, sometimes he talks about needing to be more active, which, while no cure, does help the fight against depression.
My favorite spouse is Elliott. There may come a day, when I will stop gushing about his 14-heart event. That day is not today. It is by far my favorite heart event. In my current run I am married to Harvey, and I am... pleasently surprised. I mostly chose him, because I was curious and he has been nothing but sweet. Strongly recommended. Shane is... complicated. I married him back right after he and Emily were added as marriage candidates. His arc from talking him down from jumping down a cliff to marrying him feels very rushed. At the end of his story line, I don't think he is ready to commit to another (let alone to having children). Nice guy, but needs more therapy.

yes i agree. sebastians not my first choice but i definitely agree that he should be able to enjoy his hobby. for example, my boyfriend loves anime and manga and has a ton of figures. if im 100% honest i find all the figures a bit tacky but ive never asked or even hinted at wanting him to get rid of them. they make him happy, and hes super chill about keeping them in one room so the rest of the house looks organized. we chose a nice white bookshelf and wall shelves for his books and figures and it looks nice. i think its actually more mature to accept your partners harmless hobbies, even if theyre not your taste, than it is to try to shame them for "childish" interests. theres nothing childish about being yourself and not caring if others dont like your passions and hobbies

I'm not gonna lie I got so confused with half of the stuff said when you were talking about Sebastian, he is my favourite so I'm slightly biased but it baffled me mainly because I'd not seen any of these after marriage traits. He's honestly been nothing but sweet, I think remember him talking about making a game, but I think that's more charming- especially when I know that he's right- I'm the main breadwinner here. Also Sebastian relapsing back into smoking sounds so depressing, like- he's in a marriage that doesn't make him happy to the point he relapsed, I can't really blame him for that, more feel for him.
I don’t think they really understood Sebastian or maru tbh xD Sebastian is more guilty in his own abilities in his work when he mentions how much money you make. Like you can see it in his facial expressions. Sebastian is just depressed in his environment and if we do our part to make him feel like he’s loved then he actively tries to do better and you can see how much happier he is with the farmer! But OF COURSE if we don’t do our part as a couple then anyone would start feeling bad and stressed out. And it’s common for ex-smokers to relapse when they’re going through something stressful. I really don’t understand a lot of their cons to him on this list, and it feels like they skipped over some of his nicer qualities too in listing his pros. Like the constant reassurance whenever he needs alone time that he still loves you. It’s important to him that we know he’s not growing distant with us and that’s just sweet. As for maru… among other things, I don’t really get where they think she’s trying to be condescending to us? She’s just trying to help in the only way she really can? :0

Sebastian has a large amount of social issues, and I suppose it can explain some of his aggressive behavior. Of course, that doesn’t quite excuse his behavior, but it definitely provides a reason for it. That’s without mentioning the fact that Demetrius sucks. Demetrius doesn’t care for his half son, and he only gives attention to Maru. It makes sense that he has such a tough shell built up, and automatically falls back to those mechanisms.
Gotta say for Abigail, if you’re treating her poorly and not meeting her needs over and over it makes perfect sense for her to lash out in that way. I don’t think standing up for yourself and being honest about your feelings makes you morally worse than someone who is happy no matter how theyre treated.

What I dont like about this ranking is that all of them act like you as the player can do no wrong, of course your spouse is going to be upset if you dont spend time with them or your children. A marriage is supposed to be 50/50, This ranking also doesnt acknowledge that people have different senses of humor, Sebastian joking about marrying you for money is a tyoe of humor some would like and some wouldnt, like all humor. It’s not fair to judge somebody because they think things are funny that you dont, you pick a spouse in this game mostly because you like their character, which is assuming you like their humor. If you pick somebody you dont like/relate to as much of course you wont like their jokes or humor.
I disagree with Emily's ignorance of Clint's feelings as a bad trait. Emily is just repeatedly expressing her disinterest. Just because Clint likes her doesn't mean he's entitled to her attention. It's a clear boundary that should be respected, even in real life.
With haley, she does have a charecter arck. She said that she talked with Emily in one of her dialogs, and that she enjoyed it. She talks about how much she loves her children in marriage, and promises to prepare the house for winter. She never nags you about money, and she ends up wanting you to help her approach cow's on Marnie's farm in a heart event, showing that she wants to learn how to take care of animals safely. She isn't anywhere near the best, but she is far from the worst. Also, your last complaint is that she's selfish. This is a thing that changes as she goes on. If you encourage her to help and be considerate in the cutscenes, she is able to. She just needs a little help along the way.
Shane’s is seriously the most realistic… as someone whose father was and alcoholic for the majority of his own life, that’s really how it goes. It’s very hard for many addicts to have healthy and stable relationships with both spouses and families even after recovery… so it’s definitely no fairy tale when you marry them. My dad even promised me that “I’d never marry a man” like him, so I’ve never gone past 8 hearts with shane lololol
I really hate how you made it a bad thing for Emily to “ignore” Clint. It’s canon that he stalks her, makes her uncomfortable, and is a creep. He even comments on how “you won” with Emily even after you’re already married to her or someone else. She shouldn’t be reprimanded just because she doesn’t have feelings for Clint. Especially since it wouldn’t be good for her to have feelings for Clint while you’re actively pursuing her??? It’s fine that she maybe doesn’t like Clint and feels uncomfortable around him, because that’s a normal reaction to have when someone is STALKING YOU.
I romanced alex and i must agree to disagree. I know he's arrogant, selfish when you first met him. But as said in the video he does have a tragic background. Alex is the type of character where you should invest your time in him, at first glace he doesnt look like he has a problem, the only problem is him being "selfish". Unlike sebastian for example, where people already know he's probably depressed at first sight. I just have a soft spot for characters who improve overtime. Although alex's backstory doesnt excuse his whole personality, and him disrespecting women, people REALLY need to know how much stress a child could get when their dad left them alongside with their mother being dead. Its still nice he's being treated by his grandparents, but since this tragic and trauma has been shaped when he was a child, im sure it was really hard to take in. Yes he's a fictional character but people really dont understand how hard alex's childhood is. Im not excusing all of his mistakes but, when people go through that its worse than you think. (Not saying his grandparents arent valid, but considering they're old, im sure that alex would never come out so arrogant in the first place). Also a bonus i think its cute how alex becomes really sweet after. Also during marriage, i like character developement
This^^ Ik Alex had a lot of the "Dumb Selfish Jock" Stereotypes put onto him when you first meet him, But I think thats the best part abt his character (hold on a moment itll make sense) Having him have this mentality of having to be the "best" really made his growth later in the game SO much more impactful. Realizing the reason he acted the way he did bc his Dad misteated him and his Mom passed away showed that he was a person and that his "Perfect Pretty Boy" Persona is bc of his past. He put a guard up in hopes to keep himself from getting hurt and did what he thought would make ppl like him. Does it excuse his orginal actions? No. But it makes him so much more real having these flaws and building from them.
My problem with Alex is basically based on one single conversation: "I had to buy new shoes because my old ones had a brown smudge on them. I thought about donating them but decided to throw them away because I don't want some creep wearing my shoes" like dude, you could've just,,, cleaned the shoes,,, my god
I always romance Alex. If you play as a male farmer he has a touching little self-examination where he comes to terms with being gay. CA wrote it very well.
Sebastian is my favorite spouse to go to in the game. I have yet to have any of the "problem" dialogue that was brought up (like marrying you for money which is obviously not the case), he has been caring both towards the kids and to my farmer. Would make coffee and ask if you slept okay cause it looked as though you were having a bad dream, and help with the crops and animals cause he wanted to help make your workday easier, he'll let you know when he needs some space and that he'll be back later. When you have two kids he opens up about his worry about if the kids will have a similar relationship as he and Maru. He was essentially belittled and neglected by his stepdad and was overshadowed by his sister for years. I don't blame him for being on edge and standoffish. He's an honest character in terms of what he likes and dislikes, he is not a fan of going to some of the festivals but he does so anyway one to spend time with his new family, and two to see his friends. And frogs don't take up too much space, and it is his space so it seems more of a player issue when he wants to keep frogs and you don't. The only issue I joke about is that he suggests getting a slime hutch. I'll run in there collect the slime water them saying "Get a slime hutch he said, it'll be fuuuunnnn he said....no it's not fun Sebastian they're attacking me for giving them water!" but I also make a good amount of money selling those slimes and petrified slime. Also, I kinda feel lied to cause the thumbnail put him in the good category you guys did him dirty here. Also going into the Emily and Clint thing. Clint gives off incel vibes, and darn near stalks her. I don't blame her in the least bit for brushing the feelings off. She probably already rejected him before and he's not taking no for an answer. He's kinda creepy and comes across as really entitled to her reciprocating his feelings which she absolutely does not have to do.
I hate when people compare sebastian to clint all because he doesn't exacly consider abigal a friend but i really do think it's because they both like each other and maybe having a budding romance but nothing too serious and maybe thier feelings for eachother makes it akward for thier friendship. I do get the impression that they both have feelings for each other. I also wish the dialog can be tweeked in stardew and make it more obviouse that they like each other and even hook up if player doesn't date either one. I love the game but wish i could have more of that story progresstion with the characters. I still wish sebastion and sam just admit that abigal is thier friend i don't know why concerd ape went with that.
The fact that he said Haley had a lackluster character arc means he is biased. Her 14 heart event was one of the most selfless and wholesome actions anyone does in the entire game, a complete 180 of the way she was at the beginning.

Idk man but I decided on marrying Harvey in my first playthrough because he had a weird charm to him, and the thing that completely win me over was his ten hearts event. He rents a hot-air balloon despite the fact he's terrified of high heights and that's him overcoming (sort of) that fear because he appreciates being with you so much. I also may be a tiny bit biased, but even his design with that pornstache and those glases does it for me. Regarding his dialogs, he does says that during flu season or whatnot he makes more money, but in a matter of fact sense, he even says that he never wishes anyone to be sick or hurt. And as a husband he is also very very sweet, makes you breakfast and sometimes even waters the crops for you, he's always telling you how lucky and happy he is for marrying you... Overall really sweet
Yes! Also there’s something really attractive in a real life sense about him and what he has achieved. He owns his own practice, he doesn’t live with parents (which kind of irks me about some other characters considering the farmer has achieved all of this by themselves), he is older…..I just like him a lot ❤️
Sam is my favorite, not only is he a skater boy and an amazing brother, but he also loves joja cola which is super easy to get. He's perfect and unlike the other townies, he's nice to you from day one.
Leah's was so unfair and the take lacks empathy and oozes toxic masculinity. Her defending herself is quite different from seeing yet another person she's interested in turn out to be violent... Also, I'm sorry if it hurts your hero complex to not be adored for throwing punches, but like... why is your role as white knight in your fantasy more important than her feeling about her situation with her ex?
yeah i deffo think this yter misunderstood what happened with that cutscene option to me it was abt her and her ex, and we were just stepping in when we weren't needed, which is nothing Leah should be faulted for
I thought this was a terrible take, but I hadn’t considered it from the toxic masculinity angle. You’re totally right. There’s some real toxic masculinity in expecting praise for violently “protecting your girl”, without realising that “your girl” is her own person and has a right to deal with her problems on her own terms.
All of these characters have their strengths and quirks and a back story that gives you context for their unique expression like in real world relationships. Introverted or non-Community oriented characters; those who project a vain or off-putting exterior to guard sensitivies; or other flaws/quirks are easy to misunderstand but not to be pre-judged as "Bad"... that's why grading fictional or real individuals on a scale of good vs evil tends to disregard the deeper psychology at work. Personally though, I'm surprised Leah is rated below abrasive alcoholic Shane who, only when you finally get him to open up, sends you frozen highly processed joja-corp-brand microwaveable meals to you in the mail. I suppose there's somebody for everybody though!
I had one issue with Leah: she asks a lot of questions that, early on, made me feel like I was being interviewed. "Why did you choose to become a farmer? Do you take days off? Do you have a kitchen in your house???" It's kinda dumb, I know, but it turned me off from her.
I'm going to say this as a married man. I don't have any problems with Leah when it comes to her Kel. The reason for this is because, if you step in and punch her ex, then she feels like you are solving her problems for her, instead of letting her handling it herself. She wants to solve this problem on her own cause if she doesn't, then that makes her feel inadequate and weak. The best thing you can do in a situation like this is be supportive. I know my wife doesn't like it when I play hero. It's a major turn off. Her life is not in danger here, so let her handle it. If the ex starts harassing and stalking to the point where Leah feels unsafe, then you step in and do something about it. Like call the police.

@@moimoiyoop I feel like she's most likely just like her father, most likely has autism and thus doesn't understand social norms in the same way as a neurotypical. I have ADHD and this is one thing that's very common in both: when we're passionate about something we have an even harder time reading social ques and may not realise the person we're talking to doesn't care about the subject, or that we may sound condescending to the person when we talk about things because we're simply very into talking about the subject. It's called info dumping and it's basically when you start to recite every single thing you know about a subject, or as is Maru's case, look at farming as a minmax experiment.

Harvey may seem like he’s overwhelmed by health standards for not just you/other people in town, he cares THAT much and he’s not trying to be annoying, he genuinely cares about people and makes the effort to treat people when need be. And yeah if you pass out he charges you money but that’s not on him! Besides it’s a small fee like that’s gonna put a dent in your pocket, it won’t. Besides we don’t know how the medical care system works in this universe, so you can’t spit this con on him. Harvey is sweet, loyal, a true gentleman and a loving spouse/father who only wants the best for the people he cares for. To put him in grey is a insult to me and all Harvey fans.
sam is actually one of my least favorites. he feels like he's still a high school boy, and added immaturity that his mom does everything in the house for him like cooking, cleaning etc indicates to me that he has no life skills or responsibility. even though alex isn't the sharpest tool in the shed i would still say that he has more emotional maturity than sam given his childhood hardships. sam's lack of growth is probably in part to jodi's parenting style of doing everything for her sons, but i still don't like it. i don't want a romantic partner that can't take care of themselves.
I agree. I like alex more than sam in married relationship term. Sure alex is not that bright, but he always do his best and energetic. Not to mention he is diligent and actually make big breakfast daily. I am married irl, it can be stressing out if your spouse almost doing nothing everyday when you busting your ass to make a living.
Sam wasn't taught how to cook because Jody never let him or Vincent do anything for themselves, but he will still happily surprise you with instant pancakes or by heating a frozen pizza because he wants to help you out. He actively took care of his brother back home and deals with both his father being away as a soldier and coming home with PTSD. He helps out around the farm just like the other spouses. He also takes on the role of primary caregiver if you have children, and he adores it. Sam also holds down a job, first at Joja and then by writing music for a children's show if you marry him. He's got considerably more emotional maturity and ability to take care of himself than you give him credit for. In his 14 heart event Sam is discovering how much he loves making kids happy with his music instead of the idea of rockstar glamor. I find that infinitely more mature than a guy who wants me to give him 5000G so he can make a mancave down at the bar for dude nights. Glad it could help the guys, but Alex can't even raise the money for it himself.

That's why in my recent play through I still see him as lazy immature guy. As with Alex who don't have his own job, I see him as stay at home husband. Taking care the house and his grandparents. That alone is exhausting enough even irl. And I think Sam is older than Alex because if I'm not mistaken just like Abigail, Alex still going to school before married. About 5000g I think the only person who can parted with such amount easily just the farmer. Even the saloon owner doesn't have such fund. You make me see Sam in new light :)
@@retnaningheryuanti6008 - Our player experiences create a very strong impression of the characters. First time I married Sam he watered my farm and fed my animals every day for the first week. That was before the update that added the 14 heart events, so I never saw him as lazy. The dialogue we get and how frequently we see it can also color our impressions. One person gets Sam talking about how he doesn't have the same urge to play guitar and thinks they ruined his life. Another person gets his dialogue explaining that he used playing guitar to cope when he felt lonely but is much happier now, and that player is happy that he's no longer motivated by feeling so alone. Interesting Sam fact is that his dialogue strongly implies that he suffers from ADHD. Hence the reason he's always having to find ways to create reminders for himself when he needs to do stuff. (Rubber band on his wrist to call his grandma, writing a note on his wrist to remember to change the strings on his guitar, and at least one other dialogue about his general problem with forgetting things). ADHD also would account for his difficulty with motivation at times, his dialogues about not liking making decisions, and his only deciding what to do on impulse each day. He can go into hyperfocus and noodle around on his guitar for hours though, and he does use techniques to help himself cope with his memory problems. I really need to try an Alex run. I love that he loves and takes care of his grandparents, and he has a great character arc. He also has lots of sweet post marriage dialogue. I just always used to get hung up on a detail from his 10 heart event that rubbed me the wrong way, but it's not even anything Alex said or did in the scene. (It's always made me angry that he got a steak while the female farmer only had a salad, as if she didn't need lots of energy to run a whole farm and should watch her weight.) So it's high time to give Alex a full playthrough.

Fun fact about Alex 10 heart event actually could be theorized as he got the idea from his grandparents, because it is pretty unlikely he thought it by himself. The farmer menu is different based on the farmer gender. While the male farmer get to eat linguini with mushroom sauce (George's idea), and salad for the female farmer (Evelyn's idea). There's a thread about it in reddit. In retrospect George also one of the reason why Alex want to build a mancave. George always staying at home alone watching tv while his wife goes outside to taking care town's garden. He only going out to the doctor and capel. With the man cave built George also socialized more with other male residents. Boy, who knows supposedly light hearted video games could be so deep.

I really like Haley, she grows a lot as a person through the heart events, she helps on the farm a lot and definitely shows her love for the player with the morning spouse dialogue, and develops a charitable soul.
Shane is my favorite, hands down, no changing my mind. I struggled a lot in the ways he did, and only through people supporting me was I able to reach out to get it. Underneath that, he's a sweetheart. He works hard to take care of his chickens, and once he cleans up, is a great surrogate father to Jaz. I was so happy to have him as a husband; going off lore alone, he's one of the best farm partners to have. Also, I love pizza and pepper poppers.
Emily misunderstands and thinks you're trying to tell her Clint sold you the amethyst, that it's from Clint's _shop._ She's really nice to Clint whenever he actually talks to her... he just never talks to her because he gets super weird about it. But personally, I wouldn't blame her if she told him to go play with his hammer and tongs by himself and leave her alone.
You know the whole sexism comment about Alex feels real disingenuous when the whole time you put most of the women down for having minds of their own lol.
Special shoutout to how Abigail feels distraught over killing a monster that was being actively hostile but sometimes Sebastian will be like "here I found you something" and hand you a void essence which you can only get by descending into the caves and killing the shadow monsters there
Sam is glorious! He's a himbo with a heart of gold. His music is top tier. Plus, he has enough of a history as town prankster to be just spicy enough and super fun.
That was really bad on Maru. First, there's a bunch of after-marriage dialogues you mentioned, that just aren't "real" because of the game "limitations"; she waters your crops even though there are sprinklers, and then starts saying that we could have some more automation so we could relax more, which, *clearly* , makes no sense and is a limitation of the game. Second, in Marilda's event, Maru is much more open then what you made it look. You can say that she should've kept the robot because machines were made for helping humans, and she, while reluctant at first, will agree saying you're making sense, and you'll actually gain points; *of course* if you're being an asshole saying Marilda should be back so she could work at the farm to earn you, she'll be angry because of your selfishness, and I can't really see where you saw "bad" in this interaction. You should be happy she only comes with a "I'll ignore what you just said now" and some friendship points lost. Overall most of the other things you said were right, but due to what I said, her being in grey area makes no sense.
Leah is my favorite, hands down, no competition. She likes the wilderness and minding her own business, which immediately I can relate to (Linus is still my spirit animal, lol!). She makes a sculpture in your honor. Bro, she had me at that. As an artist myself, I've made works of art for girlfriends IRL, and it's heart-breaking when they don't accept something you poured your heart and soul into. Leah's sculpture isn't my taste in art, but damn if that isn't one of the sweetest and most considerate gestures! I don't care that she punched the dude; he had it coming, and it wasn't my place to punch him anyway. You just don't get involved with shit like that. Let them sort it out themselves. As a spouse, Leah is grateful, hard working, and damn, with hips like hers, you know making babies with her is a good time! She's a good mom to your children, too. She wants them to grow up to appreciate nature, and as a country libertarian myself, that's music to my ears! She also frequently makes you salads and coffee in the morning, will repair fences, feed the animals (though not necessary since I have deluxe buildings with auto-feeders), and she will grow potted plants that she grows and gifts specifically for/to you. She's super chill, and easy to please. She's low maintenance, and not above doing honest labor. She even lists all these things that need to be done around the house before winter, and is like, "Oh, but don't worry, I'll take care of all that." She genuinely tries to look out for your health, and while a lesser man would call it nagging, she worries aloud to you to not over work yourself. Leah is all around a good soul, and someone I'd marry IRL in a heartbeat. Family before community, 100%. Righteous. If you're gonna judge Leah for the splinter in her eye, first remove the plank from your own. Everyone's done something hypocritical at some point.

When I started playing, I intended to have my character either go for Leah or Sebastian. I was trying to chat with all the characters every day and I happened to give Shane a beer on his birthday (Spring 20) in my first year, and then I went through the Cindersap Forest, which triggered his two-heart event, which made me look at him in a completely new way and I simply couldn't avoid having my character going after Shane. He is not a perfect husband, but I do like his story and his relationship with my character

Haley literally becomes so sweet before you even date her wtf are you talking about? She hosts a charity to help penny get new school books for kids... And she constantly bakes for you, cleans for you and shows the most affection out of any of them? Not to mention she overcomes her shopping addiction and donates her clothes to people that need it? Sebastian's work IS important to him. Did y'all forget he admits he wants to make a game pretty early in your budding relationship with him? He feels like he can't because he's constantly compared to Maru and Demetrius would judge him for it/make him feel lesser. He feels stifled and creatively trapped at home. Him finally being able to focus on creating a video game is a HUGE thing for him. He's able to pursue his true passion at last and it's thanks to you, his spouse. That's the furthest thing from a downside.

I feel like there should be a mod where you act as a go-between for the two of them. You can choose to get them together, tell Clint she isn't interested, or whatever else. It just doesn't seem very fair to leave Clint hanging like that when you know full well what's going on.

I think Alex donating a TV to the Saloon makes sense as a sweet idea when you consider his Grandfather really likes the TV in his house. Seriously, George only goes to Yoba religious ceremonies and the doctor, so maybe Alex is trying to get him to socialize more?
The only problem there is that George can't go to the saloon. Unless there's a mod (there's probably a mod) that addresses this, the saloon entrance is up a small flight of steps. George will never get to see that TV unless Alex carries him up the stairs.
I do like your thought process as to why that's what Alex would want to do for the town, though.

Personally, I can't really fault Emily if she really is willfully ignoring Clint's crush. I've had a friend who was very obviously in love with me and while i guess the idea of a guy being shy and timid about it sounds really wholesome and so sweet and "aw hes trying his best" it actually most of the time ends up feeling creepy. While yes, the morally correct thing to do is to outright say "I'm not interested" You find yourself conflicted because while it makes you deeply uncomfortable you don't want to hurt your friends feelings, especially if you've known them your whole life like emily has, seeing as theres only at most 30 people in the town.

As a person who has been in this position a few times, even when I have told them I am not interested, they refuse to get the hint. I have even been in this position as a married person and make that known and they still are creepy and untoward.
I admittedly have little sympathy for guys like that. I struggle to have respect if I can't be a friendly person without being worried that I am leading them on somehow.
On top of that, if they haven't outright said anything to you yet, a lot of people fear it can come off as presumptuous. Even if you're almost 100% sure they like you, there's that little doubt in the back of your head telling you that you could be misreading things.
Agree with this wholeheartedly. Another thing to point out, the fact that Clint regularly visits the bar where Emily works at. From Emily's POV, Clint is the creepy customer that thinks your hospitality means you're interested in them, but you also can't outright reject them because you're supposed to be professional.

Haley does make progress. she embraces her love for photography and is a wonderful character. She is a great friend a kind girlfriend and a amazing wife. She stars of in the game as mean or rude and fights with her sister and complains about her chores but later there friends and Emily and Haley trying to understand each and other. I don’t get why people call her dumb or a brat she is a very kind character who try’s her best to change Haley is a very good friend and a wonderful person when you get to know her. But I do have to say she has a bad first impression
after i decided to romance her i found out how sweet she actually is. at first because of this video i was left with the impression that shes solely driven by materialism but the more i talked to her the more i realised how thoughtful she is. she was extremely sad when she lost her grandma's bracelet, in that same dialogue she reacts badly if you choose the option to buy her another one. she has lines where she says that she has started liking the smell of dirt because we're always around. i think that she's and extremely sweet girl and i wont stop defending her because he did her dirty in this video.

I regularly pick Shane because he's honest. He doesn't know how to raise Jas so you know his parenting skills from the start, but he loves the chickens and animals. Also, he's realistic in that his depression is never "cured" by your love for him, but he keeps trying and apologizes often for his failures, whether actual or self-perceived. He isn't perfect husband material unless you love him, and that's kinda all he needs.

very true. a lot of people dislike him as a spouse because he "doesn't get better," but honestly he does, but it's not like he's going to be all better overnight, if he were it'd just be unrealistic. i feel like he's a very accurate portrayal of a depressed person as someone who struggles with depression, and i feel like a lot of his haters are people who just don't understand.
not that that's always the case, of course, but it feels like the people who are mad because they can't "fix him" don't realize that people don't need to be fixed.

Sometimes I see Shane haters that will say he’s better as a friend, but also say that Shane likers are weird because we all want to “fix” him and it drives me absolutely crazy, because so many of us do understand we aren’t fixing him, but we see his growth through growing to be friends with him, we see that ofc he’s still gonna struggle with his depression and anxiety and marriage wasn’t a quick fix for it. But also for me with his alcoholism I see people hating him as a marriage candidate and saying he shouldn’t be marriageable because he needs to go to therapy and work on himself first (and he DOES start doing that before marriage is even in the picture) but him recovering from his addiction being through quitting cold turkey, when he could very well be pursuing a healthy relationship with alcohol instead. It shows me that people that hate on him as a marriage candidate don’t really understand mental health issues or addiction because even people dealing with those things still deserve love and aren’t incapable of having romantic relationships. It really does seem like they’re the ones that expected him to suddenly be better overnight than those of us that like him and pursue him for marriage.

And he does have a small story element that references the farmers story, but it's pretty small. It may be easier to give shane beer mechanically, but if the player doesn't want to do that, they can buy pizza. It takes a little more, but I like that they give me that option.

My favourite is Haley. Yes, she starts off as selfish, self-centered and says mean words, but once she warms up to you,
you'd see that she was just not used to the rural life yet. Once she does, she gradually goes through a dramatic change.
Here's some examples of that change you may have forgotten or overlooked:
Cooking and Cleaning: "I cooked dinner last night. It actually turned out okay! But I did make a huge mess in the kitchen...”
“I'm glad I've learned to enjoy cleaning! The house gets dirty very easily. It's satisfying to get everything squeaky clean.”
Charity: “I'm thinking about donating a bunch of clothes... I must have a hundred pairs of shoes.”
“Yesterday I found a seagull with her wing caught in a net. I set her free, of course. She looked so helpless, the poor thing.”
Shows appreciation for her sister: “I talked to my sister for a while last night. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. You know, Emily's not actually that weird. I guess we have more in common than I used to think. Don't tell her I said so.”
She even improved upon herself at times and gives nice advice: “I should start reading some books instead of magazines.
It's good to learn things, isn't it? I only ever look at the pictures.”
“If you stay in the sun a lot it will make your hair lighter... But you don't want to get sunburnt, either. I just want a healthy amount of sunlight. Everything in moderation, right?”
and finally, she is a considerate wife: “It's okay. I know we can't have a honeymoon, since your farm needs to be taken care of.
I'm a farmer now, too!”
She even likes kids at 10 hearts: “Oh, hi [Player]! Do you like kids?”

So, yeah, she's mean at first, but if you're willing to give a very toxic Shane a chance, then you can give the little blonde a chance too.

I don’t think Emily is at fault there at all but I do think that it’s easy to misinterpret Clint’s behaviors. There is only one bar after all. Not much else for someone to do in town after work. And he has self esteem issues which is why he only really pines for her from a distance. I think the one event scene with the hiding in the bush is the most commonly misinterpreted scene for Clint though.

I picked Elliot; the choice was obvious for me as I'm also a writer, plus I love that he's mature and a romantic. Sebastian, Sam, Maru, and Abigail just seemed a bit too young. Their dialogue made it sound like they were teens rather than 20-somethings.

Yeah, I'm an Elliott fan aswell. Out of the three characters I romance he is usally my favorite.
I think Sam is espicially immature in his heart events, I wasn't attracted to Sebastins character archetype, Maru was probably a fourth for me but she felt a little snobbish, and I felt the only thing Abby really had going for her was 'gamer' purple hair rebel type thing.
That left the other options kinda slim. Shane has his whole set of issues so I approach him more as friend in my later playthroughs, Emily was mature enough but I didn't feel like I really clicked with her character enough to marry her, Haley and Alex both had a *lot* of growing up to do so I usually take the Shane Approach with them aswell, I found Penny pretty boring and didn't like the fact ypu had to lie to her to gain her affection.
So now the only characters I really romance are Elliott, Harvey, and Leah. I think they are all the right amount of grown up and don't rely on you too much in the relationship. Elliott is the eccentric but lovable DramaQueen, Harvey is the introverted and dependable sweetheart, and Leah is the free-spirited creative who you know you can always count on for entertainment. Elliott's my personal fave.

100% agreed. i like sebastian a lot but knowing that he wants to get out of stardew valley and move to the city, i never want to make him stay in town by marrying him. he and the rest of the young adults feel like they have a lot of life to live still before they settle down

He’s actually pretty easy to gift to if you’ve already befriended Linus (he loves sashimi!) and just remember he usually comes out at night, during rainy days, and goes to the saloon on Friday.
Also I’ve never taken his comments about the money the farmer makes to be like that? I’m more than happy to let him do his ‘work’ as a hobby when he moves in with me too. It’s not necessarily lazy of him. And he often comments abt taking care of the houses pipes and whatnot during winter or just before winter iirc.
He’s had a pretty rough life with his family imo. He likes his space but you can tell that he really didn’t like being in the basement back home. His step dad def plays favorites with him and maru and Robin doesn’t really do anything about it. It’s very easy to see how depressed he is and I feel good about taking him away from that environment.
He’s also pretty happy about being a parent, going so far as to talk about adding a sidecar to his motorcycle for the kids once their old enough.
As a husband he still needs some space sometimes but always reassures the farmer that he still loves us if he’s going to spend the day away from the house.
Also breaks my heart how often he has bad dreams or just can’t sleep at all.
He’s definitely my favorite bachelor in town and I find it hard to NOT date him on new files just because I don’t want him stuck with his default household forever…
I relate to him so much, I marry him every time. He is so sweet and affectionate as a husband, and if I'm making more than enough money for us to live off of it's only fair that I let him do his passion project that he has always wanted to do. Not every marriage is about both partners working for money and ignoring the other's goals in life

Tbh now that I’ve rewatched the video again I think he just misses the mark on the characterization of a lot of the characters.
But then I actually like all of the spouses except Shane which is only because of the alcoholism. >.> not really Shane’s fault entirely.
Seb is just my favorite and I feel like out of all of them he’s the worse one off to be stuck in his default home.
I feel like he is an ideal partner for me because he needs as much alone time as me but still knows how to be sweet.
One of my favourite moments with him is when he tells you that you were mumbling in your sleep and seemed scared but admits how it was kind of cute and he is blushing when he says it and of course the keeping frogs.
The best part of being in a relationship like this you can grow into a couple that can get alone time together, it's pretty serene having one person that understands the social burn out so much that you don't get burned out with each other.
Also on another note not only is Sashimi easy to get to romance Seby, there are shiny rocks that he likes getting, too. these are also fairly easy to stock up on. Frozen Tear being a loved gift and Quartz being a liked one.

I’m on my first play through and I’m with Sebastian now. I definitely plan on making new saves to marry each of them (maybe other than Shane) because I love them all. The only reason I wouldn’t marry Shane is because it makes me sad to see him get worse instead of better, I want to keep him where he’s at with 8 hearts
You missed that Sebastian is also a great dad!! We have one kid right now (Claudia) and all he does is gush about her and how he’s already taken care of her for the day and telling me not to worry about it :) he has his flaws but he’s a very attentive and loving father (probably because his fatherly figures weren’t the best :c )

I completely agree. I'm reminded of a quote from Rochfoucauld that states “None deserve praise for being good who have not the spirit to be bad: goodness, for the most part, is nothing but indolence or weakness of will.” The "good" marriage candidates don't show any real capacity for being mean or nasty. Haley does, but she becomes good, making her more human than the rest. She has the most drastic change throughout your relationship with her, going from spoiled, self-centered, and obsessed with possessions and fashion to much more down-to-earth. She becomes sweet, charitable, and not only caring towards you, but towards Emily and several other villagers. Plus, she's the easiest to marry year one, so I always end up with her.

About Alex: in his heart event when he tells you he would like to read more, he also says it's difficult for him. Plus, he's always working out and is distressed in winter because people stay at home doing boring stuff. It's just speculation, but I think that this is way of the game sugesting he might have ADHD - the hyperactivity plus having difficulty to read.
But having ADHD or not, the farmer gets the option to say to him he could focus on his strengths. Putting the fact that he does not read after marriage as a bad thing is arrogant. And it's ok to not like reading. Books are awesome, but they don't define our intelect.
i completely agree, i feel like many people at some point say they would like to read more but eventually realize it's not something they like to spend a whole lot of time doing. it doesn't mean he's a bad person for not forcing himself to read for hours on end when he doesn't like it. many people don't find the joy in reading books until they reach a certain age or maturity, or experience a lifestyle change. everyone has their own life path, you're not a bad person or unintelligent for not having reading as a hobby :)

I see the punching heart event differently. Leah is strong and doesn't need you to stick up for her. Plus how would your character know if this Kel needs an actual punch in the face. Yeah he's a creep, but the details are for Leah to know and deal with. In a nutshell, you should support her, not speak(punch) for her. :)
Ye most of the isolated arguments and kind from day one could be made about other people I think but Leah is my favourite because she doesn’t care about what other people think of her but still cares about them
I am against hitting people in general BUT I feel there is a big difference between you hitting someone you have a history with, versus someone else hitting someone you have a history with but they do not
Also, as someone said in another comment, Kel was a controlling and (at least emotionally) abusive partner to her. That colours how she sees your action, no matter how good your intentions.
That’s why she describes it as “violent” when you punch them, even though if you don’t punch them she does. When she does it, she’s asserting her independence in the face of someone trying to control her. When you do it, you seem like another violent person being possessive of her and fighting off a competitor.
Who knows, maybe she has some bad memories of Kel getting violent with people who got too close to her and you triggered those memories.

I'm so glad Elliott made it into the good tier. I feel that this fandom, and a lot of popular stardew youtubers, while I love their content, just give Elliott an unfair assessment because he can be isolated from the rest of the town. He is so often called pretentious when that just isn't true, in my opinion. To be pretentious is to have the intent of trying to sound smart, and thinking you are better than everyone, which could not be further from Elliot's character. He is so humble and sweet, apologizing if you say that farming is hard too in one of his heart events, and just being kind all around. For Pete's sake, if you marry him, he will tell you all about setting aside his pride and just going ape on the festival food the following day when the festivals arrive. Would someone who is pretentious be as goofy and lovable as him. Yes, he is a drama queen, and yes he uses flowery language and big words (and I might be biases because I am dramatic with flowery language too. That's what makes a writer), but that adds so much to his charm. Sorry for the humongous rant. I just love Elliott, and hate how unfair a lot of people are to him because he uses big words sometimes. He deserves so much more than the hate he gets for no reason!

I feel like it’s really unfair to put Abigail as being morally gray for expressing her unhappiness when the player doesn’t treat her well, especially after praising her for her open communication not even thirty seconds beforehand. If anything, I think that makes her an emotionally intelligent person for expressing the way she feels rather than stifling her emotions and just letting them fester. Not to mention the fact that you as the player have to be amoral in the way you are treating her in order to even get those dialogues. I have been married to Abigail for years in game and she has been nothing but sweet and super helpful on the farm!! Plus once you have a kid with her she is really involved and will often tell you, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of [child name] today, I know you have a lot of important work to do on the farm!” She is encouraging and appreciative, not to mention she in one of the only marriage candidates besides Sam who is nice and approachable from day one, unlike Haley or Sebastian (both of whom i love very much and have married in previous playthroughs, but I didn’t find either of them as good of a spouse as Abigail).

I can see someone disliking Alex when playing as a female farmer. That said, letting Alex be gay/queer totally transforms his arc from just getting over his casual sexism to realizing that he was raised in a lot of toxic masculinity and never really allowed to be himself. It's not just about how he treats others, but also how he treats and accepts himself and stands up to the influence of his father and grandfather.

Yeah, the reasoning given for his placement don't make much sense to me. He takes care of people's health, a very important profession given that there are several elderly people as well as a dangerous mine and forest where monsters hurt people.
Iirc there's a dialogue that suggests he has trouble making ends meet and would make more money in the city but decides to stay in Pelican town regardless which shows altruism.
And so what if he charges money from the player when he's knocked out, those medicines he uses to save your life aren't free and the price he charges is very modest anyways; it caps at 5000 gold which is the price of 8 pizzas in the saloon. Wouldn't you be willing to pay the equivalent of maybe 80 dollars for saving your life? He even lowers his fee if you can't afford it implying he's paying for the meds out of his own pocket so as to not make you go into debt!

Ngl, the cons against Maru sound pretty....petty tbh. Like to me it makes sense that my partner would want to use their gifts to help my work, and it makes sense that she wants you to spend time with your kids, as she comes from a family that has one kid an isolationist for the vast majority of the game.
Take it from someone who was in a relationship with a person who thinks they are better than you, I can see why Maru would be gray tier, she is amazing overall but small comments like hers if you do not agree with her can really eat at a person especially if you are trying to do what's best for your family and business. Its a bit petty yes, but I think that is a great word for some of the comments she says to us as well. I think of the gray area as being the marriage candidates that just need marriage counseling. They just need a 3rd person to be an outside voice of reason to help in the disconnect in the marriage. So nothing detrimental per say but something that can be worked on :)
While I actually agree with her kinda snobbish attitude, even though it's more likely not meant to be that way by her, almost every con on this list were petty and 100% biased without any subjective view at all.
Yeah, people with higher intellect than the norm can be quite condescending, for the average people that is. Well I went with Shane because his backstory really pulled at my heart strings. We have a good marriage and I haven't (so far) found it difficult to keep him happy. Gifts of pizza and coffee now and then probably help. Plus, he often feeds the animals for me and gives me pepper poppers.
For Leah's even I think it's good that way. She can punch him since he hurt her. But you can't just punch someone for someone else.

Harvey is one of the only people i have married who actually seems to acknowledge that you are working hard. also the fact that (im assuming) he wanted to be a military pilot but couldn’t then got his doctorate instead is incredible admirable and shows that he’s very smart.
Haley actually offers to help out and feeds the animals/waters the crops some days to “make your job easier”, and is generally really supportive

My first pick was Sebastian, but seeing how hard it was to gift him stuff, I went for Shane instead.
Now...at this time, I was clearly an alcoholic myself. I would drink every night to the point of blackout, sometimes causing my family members to drag me screaming to the hospital because my behavior was so terrifying. I would scream about wanting to die or how much I hated myself. And yet just a few days later, I would voluntarily ingest that poison again.
But I wouldn't admit I was an alcoholic.
Shane's story hit so close to home for me. And it's disappointing that when you marry him, you have yo use a mod to make his room NOT littered with his vice.
I did eventually get help from a rehab center, and while I continued to sneak alcohol at least once a week, it paved the way to where I am today: 1.5 years alcohol-free, and a better person than ever. There's something about forcing yourself to examine your habits, behaviors, and their effects on people that raises your empathy levels and makes it easier for you to eventually tackle ALL kinds of conflicts.
I'm still not perfect, and never will be. I still have suicidal days, and I will never get rid of my depression and anxiety. But, thank you, Shane, for being a mirror of me, showing who I was. And who I could be 💖

Sebastian is a great spouse for me. Needs space sometimes, has interests I can relate to and is a kind person (the frog scene was too cute, I encountered that a few days ago for the first time). Sometimes he waters the crops or feeds the animals, none of which I like, need, thanks to sprinklers and upgraded animal huts, but it's nice anyway!
He even seems to improve his mental health once moved in with you, sometimes he talks about needing to be more active, which, while no cure, does help the fight against depression.

Shane is... complicated. I married him back right after he and Emily were added as marriage candidates. His arc from talking him down from jumping down a cliff to marrying him feels very rushed. At the end of his story line, I don't think he is ready to commit to another (let alone to having children). Nice guy, but needs more therapy.

yes i agree. sebastians not my first choice but i definitely agree that he should be able to enjoy his hobby.
for example, my boyfriend loves anime and manga and has a ton of figures. if im 100% honest i find all the figures a bit tacky but ive never asked or even hinted at wanting him to get rid of them. they make him happy, and hes super chill about keeping them in one room so the rest of the house looks organized. we chose a nice white bookshelf and wall shelves for his books and figures and it looks nice.
i think its actually more mature to accept your partners harmless hobbies, even if theyre not your taste, than it is to try to shame them for "childish" interests. theres nothing childish about being yourself and not caring if others dont like your passions and hobbies

I'm not gonna lie I got so confused with half of the stuff said when you were talking about Sebastian, he is my favourite so I'm slightly biased but it baffled me mainly because I'd not seen any of these after marriage traits. He's honestly been nothing but sweet, I think remember him talking about making a game, but I think that's more charming- especially when I know that he's right- I'm the main breadwinner here.
Also Sebastian relapsing back into smoking sounds so depressing, like- he's in a marriage that doesn't make him happy to the point he relapsed, I can't really blame him for that, more feel for him.

Sebastian is just depressed in his environment and if we do our part to make him feel like he’s loved then he actively tries to do better and you can see how much happier he is with the farmer!
But OF COURSE if we don’t do our part as a couple then anyone would start feeling bad and stressed out. And it’s common for ex-smokers to relapse when they’re going through something stressful. I really don’t understand a lot of their cons to him on this list, and it feels like they skipped over some of his nicer qualities too in listing his pros. Like the constant reassurance whenever he needs alone time that he still loves you. It’s important to him that we know he’s not growing distant with us and that’s just sweet.
As for maru… among other things, I don’t really get where they think she’s trying to be condescending to us? She’s just trying to help in the only way she really can? :0

And honestly, I've not done Marus route- from what I've seen she seems nice, but I feel a little bad for her because of Demetrius, he's too protective. Overall I think the two of them are sweethearts

Sebastian has a large amount of social issues, and I suppose it can explain some of his aggressive behavior. Of course, that doesn’t quite excuse his behavior, but it definitely provides a reason for it. That’s without mentioning the fact that Demetrius sucks. Demetrius doesn’t care for his half son, and he only gives attention to Maru. It makes sense that he has such a tough shell built up, and automatically falls back to those mechanisms.
Gotta say for Abigail, if you’re treating her poorly and not meeting her needs over and over it makes perfect sense for her to lash out in that way. I don’t think standing up for yourself and being honest about your feelings makes you morally worse than someone who is happy no matter how theyre treated.

This ranking also doesnt acknowledge that people have different senses of humor, Sebastian joking about marrying you for money is a tyoe of humor some would like and some wouldnt, like all humor. It’s not fair to judge somebody because they think things are funny that you dont, you pick a spouse in this game mostly because you like their character, which is assuming you like their humor. If you pick somebody you dont like/relate to as much of course you wont like their jokes or humor.
I disagree with Emily's ignorance of Clint's feelings as a bad trait. Emily is just repeatedly expressing her disinterest. Just because Clint likes her doesn't mean he's entitled to her attention. It's a clear boundary that should be respected, even in real life.

With haley, she does have a charecter arck. She said that she talked with Emily in one of her dialogs, and that she enjoyed it. She talks about how much she loves her children in marriage, and promises to prepare the house for winter. She never nags you about money, and she ends up wanting you to help her approach cow's on Marnie's farm in a heart event, showing that she wants to learn how to take care of animals safely. She isn't anywhere near the best, but she is far from the worst. Also, your last complaint is that she's selfish. This is a thing that changes as she goes on. If you encourage her to help and be considerate in the cutscenes, she is able to. She just needs a little help along the way.
Shane’s is seriously the most realistic… as someone whose father was and alcoholic for the majority of his own life, that’s really how it goes. It’s very hard for many addicts to have healthy and stable relationships with both spouses and families even after recovery… so it’s definitely no fairy tale when you marry them. My dad even promised me that “I’d never marry a man” like him, so I’ve never gone past 8 hearts with shane lololol
I really hate how you made it a bad thing for Emily to “ignore” Clint. It’s canon that he stalks her, makes her uncomfortable, and is a creep. He even comments on how “you won” with Emily even after you’re already married to her or someone else. She shouldn’t be reprimanded just because she doesn’t have feelings for Clint. Especially since it wouldn’t be good for her to have feelings for Clint while you’re actively pursuing her??? It’s fine that she maybe doesn’t like Clint and feels uncomfortable around him, because that’s a normal reaction to have when someone is STALKING YOU.
I romanced alex and i must agree to disagree. I know he's arrogant, selfish when you first met him. But as said in the video he does have a tragic background. Alex is the type of character where you should invest your time in him, at first glace he doesnt look like he has a problem, the only problem is him being "selfish". Unlike sebastian for example, where people already know he's probably depressed at first sight.
I just have a soft spot for characters who improve overtime. Although alex's backstory doesnt excuse his whole personality, and him disrespecting women, people REALLY need to know how much stress a child could get when their dad left them alongside with their mother being dead. Its still nice he's being treated by his grandparents, but since this tragic and trauma has been shaped when he was a child, im sure it was really hard to take in.
Yes he's a fictional character but people really dont understand how hard alex's childhood is. Im not excusing all of his mistakes but, when people go through that its worse than you think. (Not saying his grandparents arent valid, but considering they're old, im sure that alex would never come out so arrogant in the first place).

Having him have this mentality of having to be the "best" really made his growth later in the game SO much more impactful. Realizing the reason he acted the way he did bc his Dad misteated him and his Mom passed away showed that he was a person and that his "Perfect Pretty Boy" Persona is bc of his past. He put a guard up in hopes to keep himself from getting hurt and did what he thought would make ppl like him. Does it excuse his orginal actions? No. But it makes him so much more real having these flaws and building from them.
My problem with Alex is basically based on one single conversation: "I had to buy new shoes because my old ones had a brown smudge on them. I thought about donating them but decided to throw them away because I don't want some creep wearing my shoes" like dude, you could've just,,, cleaned the shoes,,, my god

I love Harvey. I always consider him as a man of integrity, and he's really dedicated once you're in a relationship.
Sebastian is my favorite spouse to go to in the game. I have yet to have any of the "problem" dialogue that was brought up (like marrying you for money which is obviously not the case), he has been caring both towards the kids and to my farmer. Would make coffee and ask if you slept okay cause it looked as though you were having a bad dream, and help with the crops and animals cause he wanted to help make your workday easier, he'll let you know when he needs some space and that he'll be back later. When you have two kids he opens up about his worry about if the kids will have a similar relationship as he and Maru. He was essentially belittled and neglected by his stepdad and was overshadowed by his sister for years. I don't blame him for being on edge and standoffish. He's an honest character in terms of what he likes and dislikes, he is not a fan of going to some of the festivals but he does so anyway one to spend time with his new family, and two to see his friends. And frogs don't take up too much space, and it is his space so it seems more of a player issue when he wants to keep frogs and you don't. The only issue I joke about is that he suggests getting a slime hutch. I'll run in there collect the slime water them saying "Get a slime hutch he said, it'll be fuuuunnnn he said....no it's not fun Sebastian they're attacking me for giving them water!" but I also make a good amount of money selling those slimes and petrified slime. Also, I kinda feel lied to cause the thumbnail put him in the good category you guys did him dirty here.
Also going into the Emily and Clint thing. Clint gives off incel vibes, and darn near stalks her. I don't blame her in the least bit for brushing the feelings off. She probably already rejected him before and he's not taking no for an answer. He's kinda creepy and comes across as really entitled to her reciprocating his feelings which she absolutely does not have to do.
I hate when people compare sebastian to clint all because he doesn't exacly consider abigal a friend but i really do think it's because they both like each other and maybe having a budding romance but nothing too serious and maybe thier feelings for eachother makes it akward for thier friendship. I do get the impression that they both have feelings for each other. I also wish the dialog can be tweeked in stardew and make it more obviouse that they like each other and even hook up if player doesn't date either one. I love the game but wish i could have more of that story progresstion with the characters. I still wish sebastion and sam just admit that abigal is thier friend i don't know why concerd ape went with that.

The fact that he said Haley had a lackluster character arc means he is biased. Her 14 heart event was one of the most selfless and wholesome actions anyone does in the entire game, a complete 180 of the way she was at the beginning.

Idk man but I decided on marrying Harvey in my first playthrough because he had a weird charm to him, and the thing that completely win me over was his ten hearts event. He rents a hot-air balloon despite the fact he's terrified of high heights and that's him overcoming (sort of) that fear because he appreciates being with you so much. I also may be a tiny bit biased, but even his design with that pornstache and those glases does it for me. Regarding his dialogs, he does says that during flu season or whatnot he makes more money, but in a matter of fact sense, he even says that he never wishes anyone to be sick or hurt.
And as a husband he is also very very sweet, makes you breakfast and sometimes even waters the crops for you, he's always telling you how lucky and happy he is for marrying you...

Sam is my favorite, not only is he a skater boy and an amazing brother, but he also loves joja cola which is super easy to get. He's perfect and unlike the other townies, he's nice to you from day one.
Leah's was so unfair and the take lacks empathy and oozes toxic masculinity. Her defending herself is quite different from seeing yet another person she's interested in turn out to be violent...
Also, I'm sorry if it hurts your hero complex to not be adored for throwing punches, but like... why is your role as white knight in your fantasy more important than her feeling about her situation with her ex?

There’s some real toxic masculinity in expecting praise for violently “protecting your girl”, without realising that “your girl” is her own person and has a right to deal with her problems on her own terms.

All of these characters have their strengths and quirks and a back story that gives you context for their unique expression like in real world relationships. Introverted or non-Community oriented characters; those who project a vain or off-putting exterior to guard sensitivies; or other flaws/quirks are easy to misunderstand but not to be pre-judged as "Bad"... that's why grading fictional or real individuals on a scale of good vs evil tends to disregard the deeper psychology at work.
Personally though, I'm surprised Leah is rated below abrasive alcoholic Shane who, only when you finally get him to open up, sends you frozen highly processed joja-corp-brand microwaveable meals to you in the mail. I suppose there's somebody for everybody though!
I had one issue with Leah: she asks a lot of questions that, early on, made me feel like I was being interviewed. "Why did you choose to become a farmer? Do you take days off? Do you have a kitchen in your house???"
It's kinda dumb, I know, but it turned me off from her.
I'm going to say this as a married man. I don't have any problems with Leah when it comes to her Kel. The reason for this is because, if you step in and punch her ex, then she feels like you are solving her problems for her, instead of letting her handling it herself. She wants to solve this problem on her own cause if she doesn't, then that makes her feel inadequate and weak. The best thing you can do in a situation like this is be supportive. I know my wife doesn't like it when I play hero. It's a major turn off. Her life is not in danger here, so let her handle it. If the ex starts harassing and stalking to the point where Leah feels unsafe, then you step in and do something about it. Like call the police.

I have ADHD and this is one thing that's very common in both: when we're passionate about something we have an even harder time reading social ques and may not realise the person we're talking to doesn't care about the subject, or that we may sound condescending to the person when we talk about things because we're simply very into talking about the subject.
It's called info dumping and it's basically when you start to recite every single thing you know about a subject, or as is Maru's case, look at farming as a minmax experiment.
I will not standby and have slander talked about Harvey! He’s the sweetest guy in the game, grey ain’t his colour mister! Harvey may seem like he’s overwhelmed by health standards for not just you/other people in town, he cares THAT much and he’s not trying to be annoying, he genuinely cares about people and makes the effort to treat people when need be. And yeah if you pass out he charges you money but that’s not on him! Besides it’s a small fee like that’s gonna put a dent in your pocket, it won’t. Besides we don’t know how the medical care system works in this universe, so you can’t spit this con on him. Harvey is sweet, loyal, a true gentleman and a loving spouse/father who only wants the best for the people he cares for. To put him in grey is a insult to me and all Harvey fans.
sam is actually one of my least favorites. he feels like he's still a high school boy, and added immaturity that his mom does everything in the house for him like cooking, cleaning etc indicates to me that he has no life skills or responsibility. even though alex isn't the sharpest tool in the shed i would still say that he has more emotional maturity than sam given his childhood hardships. sam's lack of growth is probably in part to jodi's parenting style of doing everything for her sons, but i still don't like it. i don't want a romantic partner that can't take care of themselves.
I agree. I like alex more than sam in married relationship term. Sure alex is not that bright, but he always do his best and energetic. Not to mention he is diligent and actually make big breakfast daily. I am married irl, it can be stressing out if your spouse almost doing nothing everyday when you busting your ass to make a living.
Sam wasn't taught how to cook because Jody never let him or Vincent do anything for themselves, but he will still happily surprise you with instant pancakes or by heating a frozen pizza because he wants to help you out. He actively took care of his brother back home and deals with both his father being away as a soldier and coming home with PTSD. He helps out around the farm just like the other spouses. He also takes on the role of primary caregiver if you have children, and he adores it. Sam also holds down a job, first at Joja and then by writing music for a children's show if you marry him. He's got considerably more emotional maturity and ability to take care of himself than you give him credit for. In his 14 heart event Sam is discovering how much he loves making kids happy with his music instead of the idea of rockstar glamor. I find that infinitely more mature than a guy who wants me to give him 5000G so he can make a mancave down at the bar for dude nights. Glad it could help the guys, but Alex can't even raise the money for it himself.
@@FenrirInFlowers nice points. I have married Sam once and all he did just sleeping and being lazy. That's before the newest update tho. That's why in my recent play through I still see him as lazy immature guy.
As with Alex who don't have his own job, I see him as stay at home husband. Taking care the house and his grandparents. That alone is exhausting enough even irl. And I think Sam is older than Alex because if I'm not mistaken just like Abigail, Alex still going to school before married.
About 5000g I think the only person who can parted with such amount easily just the farmer. Even the saloon owner doesn't have such fund.

@@retnaningheryuanti6008 - Our player experiences create a very strong impression of the characters. First time I married Sam he watered my farm and fed my animals every day for the first week. That was before the update that added the 14 heart events, so I never saw him as lazy. The dialogue we get and how frequently we see it can also color our impressions. One person gets Sam talking about how he doesn't have the same urge to play guitar and thinks they ruined his life. Another person gets his dialogue explaining that he used playing guitar to cope when he felt lonely but is much happier now, and that player is happy that he's no longer motivated by feeling so alone.
Interesting Sam fact is that his dialogue strongly implies that he suffers from ADHD. Hence the reason he's always having to find ways to create reminders for himself when he needs to do stuff. (Rubber band on his wrist to call his grandma, writing a note on his wrist to remember to change the strings on his guitar, and at least one other dialogue about his general problem with forgetting things). ADHD also would account for his difficulty with motivation at times, his dialogues about not liking making decisions, and his only deciding what to do on impulse each day. He can go into hyperfocus and noodle around on his guitar for hours though, and he does use techniques to help himself cope with his memory problems.
I really need to try an Alex run. I love that he loves and takes care of his grandparents, and he has a great character arc. He also has lots of sweet post marriage dialogue. I just always used to get hung up on a detail from his 10 heart event that rubbed me the wrong way, but it's not even anything Alex said or did in the scene. (It's always made me angry that he got a steak while the female farmer only had a salad, as if she didn't need lots of energy to run a whole farm and should watch her weight.) So it's high time to give Alex a full playthrough.

Fun fact about Alex 10 heart event actually could be theorized as he got the idea from his grandparents, because it is pretty unlikely he thought it by himself.
The farmer menu is different based on the farmer gender. While the male farmer get to eat linguini with mushroom sauce (George's idea), and salad for the female farmer (Evelyn's idea). There's a thread about it in reddit.
In retrospect George also one of the reason why Alex want to build a mancave. George always staying at home alone watching tv while his wife goes outside to taking care town's garden. He only going out to the doctor and capel. With the man cave built George also socialized more with other male residents.

I really like Haley, she grows a lot as a person through the heart events, she helps on the farm a lot and definitely shows her love for the player with the morning spouse dialogue, and develops a charitable soul.
Shane is my favorite, hands down, no changing my mind. I struggled a lot in the ways he did, and only through people supporting me was I able to reach out to get it.
Underneath that, he's a sweetheart. He works hard to take care of his chickens, and once he cleans up, is a great surrogate father to Jaz. I was so happy to have him as a husband; going off lore alone, he's one of the best farm partners to have.
Also, I love pizza and pepper poppers.
Emily misunderstands and thinks you're trying to tell her Clint sold you the amethyst, that it's from Clint's _shop._ She's really nice to Clint whenever he actually talks to her... he just never talks to her because he gets super weird about it. But personally, I wouldn't blame her if she told him to go play with his hammer and tongs by himself and leave her alone.

Honestly, haley is my favorite.
Even though she can be a bit difficult at the beginning, she has a comple 180 by the end and is a nice person.

That was really bad on Maru.
First, there's a bunch of after-marriage dialogues you mentioned, that just aren't "real" because of the game "limitations"; she waters your crops even though there are sprinklers, and then starts saying that we could have some more automation so we could relax more, which, *clearly* , makes no sense and is a limitation of the game.
Second, in Marilda's event, Maru is much more open then what you made it look. You can say that she should've kept the robot because machines were made for helping humans, and she, while reluctant at first, will agree saying you're making sense, and you'll actually gain points; *of course* if you're being an asshole saying Marilda should be back so she could work at the farm to earn you, she'll be angry because of your selfishness, and I can't really see where you saw "bad" in this interaction. You should be happy she only comes with a "I'll ignore what you just said now" and some friendship points lost.
Overall most of the other things you said were right, but due to what I said, her being in grey area makes no sense.

She likes the wilderness and minding her own business, which immediately I can relate to (Linus is still my spirit animal, lol!).
She makes a sculpture in your honor. Bro, she had me at that. As an artist myself, I've made works of art for girlfriends IRL, and it's heart-breaking when they don't accept something you poured your heart and soul into. Leah's sculpture isn't my taste in art, but damn if that isn't one of the sweetest and most considerate gestures! I don't care that she punched the dude; he had it coming, and it wasn't my place to punch him anyway. You just don't get involved with shit like that. Let them sort it out themselves.
As a spouse, Leah is grateful, hard working, and damn, with hips like hers, you know making babies with her is a good time!
She's a good mom to your children, too. She wants them to grow up to appreciate nature, and as a country libertarian myself, that's music to my ears! She also frequently makes you salads and coffee in the morning, will repair fences, feed the animals (though not necessary since I have deluxe buildings with auto-feeders), and she will grow potted plants that she grows and gifts specifically for/to you. She's super chill, and easy to please. She's low maintenance, and not above doing honest labor. She even lists all these things that need to be done around the house before winter, and is like, "Oh, but don't worry, I'll take care of all that."
She genuinely tries to look out for your health, and while a lesser man would call it nagging, she worries aloud to you to not over work yourself. Leah is all around a good soul, and someone I'd marry IRL in a heartbeat. Family before community, 100%. Righteous.
If you're gonna judge Leah for the splinter in her eye, first remove the plank from your own. Everyone's done something hypocritical at some point.

I had one issue with Leah: she asks a lot of questions that, early on, made me feel like I was being interviewed. "Why did you choose to become a farmer? Do you take days off? Do you have a kitchen in your house???"
It's kinda dumb, I know, but it turned me off from her.

When I started playing, I intended to have my character either go for Leah or Sebastian. I was trying to chat with all the characters every day and I happened to give Shane a beer on his birthday (Spring 20) in my first year, and then I went through the Cindersap Forest, which triggered his two-heart event, which made me look at him in a completely new way and I simply couldn't avoid having my character going after Shane. He is not a perfect husband, but I do like his story and his relationship with my character

This person's tier list feels a bit biased and based on first impressions tbh. There's alot of shit that he says that makes no sense to me, especially that Sebastian dialogue. I've married him in most playthroughs and I rarely get that dialogue.

Haley is the best one of them all, starts bitchy but ends up like a real diamond. Also the only character where we see real character development over time + she learns to love the farm life.
Haley literally becomes so sweet before you even date her wtf are you talking about? She hosts a charity to help penny get new school books for kids... And she constantly bakes for you, cleans for you and shows the most affection out of any of them? Not to mention she overcomes her shopping addiction and donates her clothes to people that need it? She has one of the best turnarounds in the game
