The Greek gods never stuck until I read stories like Circe that wove the myths together in relation to a main character, having that center point to refer to really helped me
After graduating college (only took me 10 years) I noticed I was still triggered by all of the back to school ads that pop up in the fall.. wish we could just be excited to learn instead of dreading the insane amount of work that comes with it
Haha, in Ireland most adults still for years after taking the state exams before entering universities have nightmares over it. We all have our academic traumas
That’s what I told myself when I graduated in May after three rough semesters online… and I’m already sad I won’t be going back to attend classes in the fall lol.
So happy I stumbled across Noelle's channel. Especially with all the craziness in the world. Her voice is so soothing it calms my ass down when I'm panicking about my last semester. Wishing you a great next few semesters. (Hopefully as stress-free as possible!)
I'm sorry you're stressed over school, Noelle :( You got this though girl. Just take it week by week. You can only do your best and we've seen from other vids that you're killing it and you CAN and WILL finish your program. If you need to put vlogging aside to lessen your load, then do it. We'll be here when you get back! School is gruelling but just pace yourself. Your 170K subscribers are cheering you on! Do your best, boo xxoo
Noelle, your feelings about going back to school are totally valid! I always felt super anxious about the start of a new semester and really felt like grad school dragged on. There are lots of emotional and motivational ebbs and flows. Take it as it comes. You’ll make it through. ❤️
If you’re looking for really good mythology books, Stephen Fry’s books are fantastic! The myths are super accessible and he does a really great job showing how a lot of them are interwoven and how fun/sad they can be
Jean Menzies, of the channel Bookish Thoughts, has several videos for recommendations for books on mythology and classic Greek literature. She also published her own book on the topic, as that is her area of study.
Noelle I would highly recommend Pandora's Jar: Women in Greek Myths by Natalie Haynes. It's a retelling of many of the myths through a female perspective and accounts for their absence in modern retellings! 💕
The Silence of the Girls is one of my favorites!! I read it almost immediately after I read The Song of Achilles and it's so interesting to see how different authors interpret his character because the difference was HUGE!
Noelle, I love when you share about the anxieties surrounding school. It makes me feel so normal knowing that other people think of their lives in terms. semesters, and "how many books can I read before my life is taken over by required reading again?".....So Thank you for your transparency and real-ness. Bless.
The little school tangent you did in the beginning spoke to me on another level. I have two more semesters of class and then a year of rotations. I feel so burnt out already. I am trying to read as much as possible before school starts too! We can do it! Sending all the luck and love your way!
ur videos are always so much fun! I’m planning to start the acotar series this month along with 1Q84 which is so huge I’m not sure I’ll be able to read other books. So excited for ‘the henna wars’ and ‘Felix ever after’ !!
I bought Greek Mythology by Liv Albert b/c of this video and holy crap it’s gorgeous! 😍 As someone who loves reading Mythology retelling, I’m glad to have this as a pocket guide. I also got Mythos by Fry and WHAT A STUNNER. Most influential video by far this year! And also now listening to Liv Albert’s podcast. Over the moon!
Noelle, your positive energy just shines through so strongly!! Even when I am not in the mood for reading much I come to your videos because you give so much joy to me! 🥰❤️
Noelle, I want you to know that I read the Hating Game because of you and it literally changed my life lmao... I used to exclusively read fantasy and I was in this horrible book slump for months, and then I read the hating game and I have read 6 other books that were in the same vein as it in the past month. Thank you!
For your mythology project, I would really recommend Anne Carson's The Autobiography of Red which is like a long poem/short novel retelling of the 'monster' Geryon and Hercules as a very interesting and emotionally unique story of love and trauma and coming of age. It floored me when I read it!
Noelle I love your videos! I make sure to watch each one, sometimes multiple times. I'm so excited, I found The Hating Game and Such a Fun Age at my library bookstore! I can't wait to start reading them.
I received an arc of BWWAY via my job at a bookstore, and I really enjoyed it. For me, Normal People remains my favourite because I related most to those characters. However, BWWAY is such a good portrayal of life in your mid-late twenties. I feel like everyone’s favourite Sally Rooney is determined by the characters you relate to most: particularly as the books are driven by character rather than plot.
I have 2 semesters of graduate school left too and watching your videos has made me feel supported through my school journey! Thank you for providing such wonderful content ❤️
I loooooved The Chosen & the Beautiful but it’s definitely polarizing due to the writing style, as well as the initial veerrry slow pace. Nghi Vo chose to slowly unfold Jordan’s story as well as the parallels to and layers added on The Great Gatsby, but as someone who enjoys analyzing themes it worked incredibly well! I’d also recommend Vo’s two novellas to literally anyone, her writing is so BEAUTIFUL. Light fantasy in an imperial Asian inspired setting with sapphic themes and a nonbinary main character, who is a traveling scholar collecting stories of the empire.
Thanks for turning me on to A Shark In The Time of Saviors. I listened to it and loved it. The audio was excellent and the Hawaiian lore and setting was a perfect summer read.
In the Persephone and Hades retelling, I think the best is "Hadestown" the musical, because the original myth isn't that long its paired up with the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, not only is the music beautiful but the both myths are interwoven so well that it creates a complete and satisfying story.
Wow, sounds like you have some great books lined up for August! Glad to hear about new releases coming from Sally Rooney and Paula Hawkins. Your book group picks sound great, too! Good luck with grad school this semester!
I've been huge on ancient Greece and ancient Greek retellings for years. _A Thousand Ships_ is by far the best of all the books you've got on your Greek-themed TBR this month--the others are fantastic too though! When I started it, I was a little overwhelmed by some of the names in the book because they're all female perspectives in a male-dominated canon. But if you feel overwhelmed too, there's a dramatic personae that literally saved my brain when I read this book earlier this year! I hope you love them all 💕
Oooouuu girl I'm so excited for you picking up A Touch of Darkness! I read all three plus A Game of Fate in a single month. So propulsive and steamy 🌶️
if you haven’t read lore olympus on webtoon, it’s about to come out as a physical graphic novel and i super recommend you read it! it’s also a hades and persephone retelling and the artwork is so cute! (you can also just read it on webtoon if you don’t wanna wait haha)
I started school last monday, and I also have just two semesters left and I want it to be DONE already, so big mood Noelle Also, when you were talking about the Greek Myth books I thought about some Percy Jackson books, and like, I know you dont do fantasy, so I'm not going to recommend you any of the series, but there are two books "narrated" by Percy in which he explains some myths: Percy Jackson's Greek Gods and Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes, I think you would like them because I've also heard Let's Talk About Myths Baby and I think how the book it's written has this similar style of not being super serious and having some narrator commentary, and they are illustrated too!
beautiful world where are you is SO good! i think you might enjoy it more than her others bc it’s a lot more mature in both the characters and the themes
I'm in grad school as well - For nursing. The only scheduled breaks for me are the week of Christmas and New Years (I can add a break in if I want, otherwise my classes run back to back). I have soooo many books on my list to read (my bookcases are over filled - lol) and I just ordered 7 more books today 😆 currently reading Reset and You Are a Badass.
I read the silence of the girls last your on a recommendation from my Ancient Greek literature professor and from what I can remember I really enjoyed it! It was also nice to see some creative liberty with characters who the author had written into the Iliad.
A Touch of Darkness is one of my next audiobooks! I currently listen to one book and read a phyiscal book at once, and that's gonna be an audiobook and I'm exciiiited for it. Also... I went back for an undergrad and I have 3-4 semesters left and ugh I feel you
Would you say that a Touch of A Darkness reproduces models of toxic masculinity? E.g. is it a romance in the same way that 50 shades of grey or any Colleen hoover is?
I’m on a two year master’s programme and by the sounds of it, I felt the exact same way as you this time last year (I.e. not really wanting to go back.) I had a much better year this year, really enjoyed my modules and although I am looking forward to it being over, I feel loads more positive about it than I did. Sorry if that’s not helpful, just thought I’d share and hope it is better than you think right now ☺️
Hello there, new sub aaaand... Greek! Really excited to see you so into Greek mythology! Since you just started learning about all the ancient Greek myths, I think you should find and read about the story of the Argonaut expedition, starting from how the Golden Fleece came to be, up until the tragic love story of Jason and Medea. I think you'd really be into it :)
My Greek Mythology book arrived last week. I honestly bought it for the artwork. I studied Greek & Roman Civilisation in college so I didn't need it for that purpose but would recommend it for people looking to expand their mythology knowledge. I have read too many of the modern Greek & Roman myth retellings, mainly the ones centring around the female figures. The Silence of Girls is one of the best retellings and Pat Barker did such a good job at showing the Trojan War myth through the female gaze. She has a new book out now (or maybe soonish) and it will be an instant buy for me (Sorry for the mythology appreciation ramblings!)
I love that you are on a Greek Mythology kick. I have been reading many of these new published retellings as well. (I was a nerd and minored in Classical studies so this publishing trend makes me so happy.) If you are still into the Trojan women theme, if you have time, look into the Greek Tragedy by Euripides “The Trojan Women.” It is a very sad play from the POV of the Trojan women from the aftermath of the Trojan war. There is a 1970s movie adaptation staring Katharine Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave that follow the Edith Hamilton translation. We performed that play in my high drama class and watched the film as well. (It is definitely 70s vibes but overall sticks the the play pretty well.) I got really burnt out my last few terms in Grad school. So I can feel the dread and wanting it to be over. Good luck!! You can do it! It is also okay to take a break when you need to.
I'm going to school too! I've been going through the summer, but September is when I start student teaching and I'm kind of terrified! I think it's sooo exciting that you only have two terms left (even though that sounds like a lot right now). I just finished The Maidens (and now I'm curious about which part of the twist you figured out), and I'm currently reading We are the Brennans and I'm loving it!
another great book about greek mythology, particularly the roles of women in mythology is Great Goddesses by nikita gill. it’s mostly poetry but there are a few stories that feel more like short stories and i highly recommend it.
You gots this!! I feels you because I also start my Master's courses this month and I'm just hoping my children can leave me alone an hour at a time to do homework 🤣🤣. You have a good TBR. Your first book seems very interesting.
I loved The Silence of the Girls! I was put off by Greek myth retellings after I read Circe as I really did not like that book so I was so surprised when I loved The Silence of the Girls. Pat Barker has a new Greek myth retelling coming out this year so if you like this one I’d definitely recommend you check out her others! Like you I don’t know much about the history of Greek myths so thanks for the podcast and book recs; I’ll be sure to check those out. Good luck with going back to school, you’re almost done!
Absolutely recommend that one! It was one of the first Greek mythology books I read and really got me into the genre, great feminist retelling on a classic, maybe even a 5/5???
Noelle is the elder sister I have always wanted lol
The Greek gods never stuck until I read stories like Circe that wove the myths together in relation to a main character, having that center point to refer to really helped me
I’m glad I’m not the only one who is a little anxious about the school year starting in a few weeks
Best of luck with your classes Noelle 😁

Exactly. I'm going back to college in October and after a whole year of online school... Let's say "terrified" is an euphemism.
Even when I’m not in school (I.e., during the summer), I’m still thinking I have upcoming deadlines 😰
I have 2 semesters left of my undergrad and I feel the same way about just being ready to be done. Academic burn out it’s real. We can do it!
That’s what I told myself when I graduated in May after three rough semesters online… and I’m already sad I won’t be going back to attend classes in the fall lol.
Touch of Darkness was originally on wattpad, and yes it reads like a wattpad. That’s all I’ll say about that.
Noooooo😂
Shit. I literally just bought it 🤦♀️
@@beckyhanaver4275 My friends and I read it as part of our little bookclub. I read it as fast as I could so I could hurry up and just finish it lol 💀

You really should check out Stephen Fry's "Mythos", "Heroes" and "Troy" in your Greeck mythology quest. He's BRILLIANT!
I was going to recommend him as well! I paired the books with the audiobooks and that was just amazing :-)
Yes!! The audiobooks are excellent!
@@carolinevs5731 so did I👌🔥
I'm reading "Heroes" right now and I already know that I wanna read the others!
If you want a greek mythology breakdown you should DEFINITELY read Mythos and Heroes by Stephen Fry. Such good reads
Or have him read it to you ;)
It's really good to have in the background as an audiobook. You don't even have to commit to it, you can just listen to one chapter when you like it.
