Yes, Hamilton listens! I tried this out today at the Tokyo boutique. My wrist is just tad below 7 inches, and the proportions on this 38mm are just spot on. Bought it on the spot without a second thought. Although I own quite a bit of watches, the dial is so versatile that I could easily recommend this as someone's first watch, or only watch for that matter. I'm looking forward to trying out different straps.
Which tokyo boutique to recommend for hamilton watches?
Congratulations, this is a dream watch for me. Hope they don't make it a limited run.
@@ajdoyle9559 Thanks! I don't think it's a limited edition, so take your time. Waiting is part of the buying experience.
I was in Aviation..search and rescue..bearing sea..coast guard..can't wait to get one.. 👑
I wished they listened faster. It took ages to come out with the Murph after the movie. And a few years more until the came out with the smaller size.
I saw this yesterday on a Hamilton advertisement that arrived in my inbox. The Murph has now shot to the top of my list! Thank you Hamilton for listening!
I don't care at all about the movie association. But the design is just so well balanced.
YEs yes yes keep pumping out watch content daily! Thank you
The problem with this watch is the price at this moment, You can get the Hamilton Khaki Auto (same watch different dial and hands) at about half the price, but man I love this and still may pick one up, it is that good.
Agreed. It is annoying that they charge more just because it's associated with a movie, though it is a very nice timeless design. I think I even would have preferred an all brushed look with a regular vintage leather strap.
Perhaps Hamilton is paying royalties to Christopher Nolan for his hand in designing the watch and therefore a pricier Khaki.
@@driver0s228 Hmm, perhaps. Still as a result the watch is expensive for what it is!
It’s not the same as the standard Khaki Automatic. The Murph 38mm has a brand new case, designed specifically for this watch, underside AR coating and a Nivachron balance spring. All of these are updates and are reflected in the retail price, which is reasonable IMO.
@@Tickerman The AR coating is kept at an absolutely minimum. It might as well have none. The case looks pretty much like Hamilton's other fieldwatches. The dial, and hands are the same as those on their Khaki Pioneer watches. (Those went for a price around 520 euro if I remember correctly.) There wasn't much extra designing needed for this model. They scaled it down and removed the moresecode from the seconds hand. And added a bit of AR coating.
Stunning watch. The Murph was already very good, but this 38mm version takes it to another level. Updates include a brand new case designed specifically for this watch (not the standard Khaki auto case), a Nivachron balance for added antimagnetic performance and underside AR coating. Great job, Hamilton.
was the nivachron brand new for this watch or was it used before?
Not a Brand new case,It's the Khaki Pioneer case and ETA would be as in house as it could get!
I got it, it’s my first Hamilton, and I love it!! The strap is stiff - I’m sure it’ll get better with time. One of my first thoughts was to get a nato strap; but I dismissed it since I figured it would take away from the story of the watch. I might get a nato strap now that you mentioned it 🙂
Great choice! Definitely have a try of it with the nato and let me know what you think 🙌
I love it and I totally agree about putting it on a nato ! I’ve seen some pics on IG of it on a black or khaki nato strap and it totally transforms the look of it to be more of the ‘field watch’ it is. I’ll be adding one to the collection at some point 👨🚀
So awesome they listened! I had this watch and loved it. But was just too big. Definitely will be pulling the trigger on this
Patientlynwaiting for mine to arrive tomorrow. And yes, totally bought it because of the movie
Great review as always
Thank you for the review! Clearly on my list. Does it have a ghost date position? As this movement normally has a date function.
Aside from the bezel the 38mm Murph is almost an exact replica of the 1960s Hamilton field watches. I think the color of the numerals and hands has less to do with the sand in the movie and more to do with getting that vintage patina look of the lume (most Hamiltons have this color lume). Very nice watch and if I didn't already own a bunch of field watches this one would be at the top of my list, albeit a tad expensive.
Absolutely!
The Murph is bases on the Khaki Pioneer. That is why it has those cream coloured hands and numbers.
Great vid, great points on in-house movements.
Thanks mate!
One other point about these movements compared with in-house movements often overlooked is that they are a lot cheaper to maintain, 🙂 Reliable, accurate, what is there not to love? Cracking watch too, I love the elegance and simplicity of the design. 👏👏👏
Yeah, it’s cool. Another Khaki. They all look cool. So many shapes, sizes, colors and different strap options.
Hi! Thanks for the review! Any idea how does this compare to the 38mm Titanium Khaki Field in terms of the lugs specifically? The 38mm Khaki Field Mechanical does not sit well on my smallish wrist, so I was very excited for this smaller Murph until I realized that the 2022 Titanium Field is also a bit shorter lug-to-lug (almost 46 mm). And I like that Khaki Field look better with the 24 hours track and no faux-tina lume. I know this Murph has even shorter lugs (def. not elongated IMO). If you handled both, can you tell how much they turn down for the Murph or the 38mm Field Ti?
When it comes to any given pair of leather straps or band , I think it can help to just look for a different style.
I like the watch but I'd stay at the 42mm. Another thing is I hope you'd consider adding the length of the strap on watches you review. That's a huge indicator for me whether I look any further regarding watches, especially bracelets. Very good review.
Cool, finally smaller wrists can enjoy this sMurph also, or just have it as a Field watch, another choice, and its great for sure. For mid range and bigger wrists 42 Murph is no issue, as Pilot watches are in range 42/44/47 Fliegers etc. anyway.
ps. Also what I understood, 38 has AR coating? Which is of course great.
nice watch! thanks for the video
Thank you!
Now I'm really hoping for a 38mm Coop watch. The dial real estate on the 42mm version is so big, but I love the design.
This is a great example of a brand listening to their customers. While my 7.25" (18.4cm) wrist can just pull off the 52mm lug-to-lug of the old Murph (on paper, I've not seen one even at the Hamilton AD I was at), this new size is much more fitting. I think this is more of a dressy field watch than an outright field watch, which is just fine. Hamilton has more than enough tool/out and out field watches. The polished bezel, croc style strap, now smaller 38mm size, and the cathedral hands present as a bit more dressy. Somebody could easily wear this into an office, and I think even with a suit, yet it also has durability with sapphire and 100m WR. I think an in-group movement, which is what we have here, is just fine. It offers solid accuracy, and an amazing power reserve at well under £1K/US$1K. You just won't get that anywhere close to that price with a full on in-house movement.
I was on the fence between this and a khaki auto and I went with the auto instead of the murph. I so badly wanted a date window on the murph and the price was almost double the khaki auto which really swayed me to the auto instead. However, interstellar is by far my favorite movie and I definitely want to buy one at some point for that reason alone.
This watch is really cool..love to grab one down the line..even without the "movie" back story the watch definitely stands on its own..its a Hamilton lol its sophisticated and sporty at the same time this can definitely be in the category of a "one watch" collection..in my opinion... but yes the "movie" does make it cooler lol Remember that Hamilton has a watch in Nolans recent film as well..TeneT...not sure if thats a coincidence or Nolan just likes the Hamilton brand..lol
Not sure why you're saying the lugs are elongated. The lug to lug distance on this watch is a bit too short at less than 45mm, which is perfect for smaller wrists but also makes the watch look a bit stubby. The current 38 mm Khaki Field watches have 47 mm, which is actually proportional to the style of the watch.
Also, not sure why you're saying the watch looks too old for you. It is supposed to represent a style of pilot officer's watches from the 50s, so naturally it will look old and vintage-looking.
This is made my life a little bit more difficult. I have watches I need before I get this, but I definitely will have this...
I bought it yesterday and i love it. Only the strap is extremely stiff and not my kind of style. But that was an easy fix👍
Great choice. Really loving Hamilton at the moment!
Just got it yesterday, I LOVE IT!
Me to. Been wearing it today and it’s really great. I agree about the strap so yesterday bought a lovely new strap and official 16mm Hamilton buckle as I like a taper. Great review as always.
What strap would you recommend for a replacement?
@@fraybentos9854 I think a watch like this goes with any and all to a large degree. I have bought a less padded but still 2.75 mm very dark brown calf leather. As mentioned I’ve gone for a taper down to 16mm as I don’t like the aesthetic of a wider buckle. What I don’t like in this strap is the slightly plastic look to the faux crocodile. I also am odd so have to have the branded buckle. I figure if I’m going to change a strap I might as well go all out. I’ll probably get a couple of others after Christmas as I like to change straps frequently.
Well done sir!
I am 24 and i love this watch from my fav movie but people told me its too vintage and looks old while i find it quite ageless even when i reach old age it still rocks
This is the one. Will wait for a sale.
8 months after, I still use it often in my rotation.
Though im beginning to look for strap options. The uncle strap senator bracelet is very hard to get.
Anyone have suggestions for a perfect strap for this watch? Thanks!
Now I need a 38mm Cooper watch to complete my Interstella collection.
Great watch! The movement could be considered 'in house' as Hamilton and ETA are both owned by the Swatch group
The movement is not developed by Hamilton. So "inhouse movement" is a stretch. It still comes from another factory than the rest of the watch.
This is great news!
Does the 38mm still have Eureka on the second hand in morse? I do hope so…
This type of watch has similar appeal to these restomod classic cars, updated with modern parts. You get classic looks and style, with modern benefits. Very desirable for many of us. Can't afford a singer porsche but I could just about afford a murph.
38 or 40mm version of Cooper´s watch would be great for younger audience. I´d buy that one
Polished bezel doesn’t make sense to you on a field watch but I’m sure you wouldn’t say the same with IWCs
I really like this one. Only thing is it's quite a bit more expensive than other khakis with same movement. So it doesn't seem such good value.
I'll be honest. This looks perfect to be the one watch in a one watch collection.
It would if it had better lume and was more waterproof. But indeed. A neat looking watch.
The Interstellar model was the Khaki Aviator Pilot Day Date Auto, in 38mm size.
Well done Hamilton. Great video
Thanks mate!
I own the 42 and the biggest issue to this day the lack of AR coating with the crystal.
That has not much improved in the 38 version. The AR coating is very minimum. You still have the reflections on the crystal.
Does it make sense to change my 42 mm to this one? My wrist is 18.5 mm so even 42 looks ok, in my opinion. But lately I like smaller watches (37,38 mm) and now I’m thinking what to do )
No whole numbers after the decimal point I seem to recall from primary school.
You are not vintage but newly minted.
Good thickness but not a risky watch IMHO.
I was going to buy the green titanium 38 for my first "real" watch but now I'm liking this one.
What say you?
Shame the lost the detail on the seconds, loved it
The creamy colour of the hands and numbers is not an idea by Christopher Nolan. The Murph is actually based on the Khaki Field Pioneer. It has the same dial and colours. But has a union crown and a coin edge bezel. In fact when fans of the movie were asking for the Murph, Hamilton responded that they already made it in the Khaki Field Pioneer. It wasn't until years later that they realised that a lot of extra money could be made if they put the Murph in production.
Gorgeous, but as a lot of people already said: A bit too expensive compared to the normal Khaki Field automatic.
Will have an eye on the pre-owned market though.
The best looking Hamilton
Beautiful watch and great review. I am not a fan of the strap either (too dressy). I think it would look better on a khaki canvas/sailcloth strap to give it a more vintage field watch look.
Do a versus between this and the tudor ranger?
Great shout... stay tuned!
Why? This isn‘t even a Murph watch. It‘s just another Hamilton.
The 42mm Murph has the Eureka morse code on the seconds hand. This is the only thing that qualifies this watch as a Murph watch from the movie.
The new „Murph“ doesn‘t have it. No idea why.
The Ranger has an in house movement, a great steel bracelet with an outstanding clasp, perfect build quality, and a COSC certification. It runs great.
The Hamilton doesn‘t even have a proper anti reflexive coating for the crystal. It‘s a joke to compare it to the Ranger.
@@panorama4526 Hamilton and Tudor are in different tiers, sure. But, on the morse code bit, I don't believe the movie Murph had it. So if that's what qualifies one as the "real" watch... the 38mm is the real one.
@@Z06Wingnut So every Planet Ocean is a Bond watch without having the 007 seconds hand?
Of course the movie watch had no morse code. The 42mm Murph was released years after the movie. This watch did not exist in the Hamilton portfolio when the movie was made. It was especially made for the movie scene with the morse code. So they put the code on the seconds hand when the Murph was released.
The 38 is just another Hamilton. Like a Planet Ocean is an Omega, not a Bond watch per se. Hamilton wants to sell it as a Murph without doing it right.
@@panorama4526 The Tudor Ranger is an ugly watch. It is a try hard watch that overdoes it in trying to look like a ‘tool watch’ but just ends up plain and ugly.
Watch of 2022!
Bro you’re talking exactly like Adrian 😉
Great review! They did listen but why did they leave out the morse code on the second hand!? It really added to the drama of the watch!
No one’s gonna expect a so-called in house movement at this price point lol
It isn't . Even though ETA is own by Swatch. It is not made by Hamilton. Nor comes from the same factory.
I do not care about the movie. I have not seen it . I got the watch on sake and saved $250 . It's a nice watch . Keeps good time . Looks great.
Bought this and sadly ended up returning it. I feel the beige on black makes it in some cases not that legible.
@ChisholmhunterOfficial60 hi is this real? I tried adding you but can't find your name.
It’s a scam.
@@stevie-con67 ah thought so. I never win anything. Lol
Love the watch, not a fan of the strap.
I want this, but it would immediately go on a barton rubber strap...
Thanks for making this review, very nice. But dude. There is nothing "vintage" about a leather strap for a watch. But hey, since the Murph 38 has essentially the same case as the regular old Hamilton Khaki Field 38 (but with AR coating this time) it will look stellar (see what I did there?) on a NATO. These are really wearable on any strap you've got lying around. Too young to wear leather. Good lord. That is a weird thing to say.
The fact that the polishing looks slightly different doesn't make it a different case, and not a risk taken. They've just had to shrink the dial of the Murph 42 to fit their existing platform. It's a no-brainer to release this.
11.10mm! buddy…
@ChisholmhunterOfficial60 I did…🥳 GTFO 😂
Can you make your content accessible by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning? It is extremely hard to enjoy your content having to keep concentration on the auto captioning and not be able to see your content properly sadly 😢
In my opinion, I think it is not" The Murph" if it is not 42 mm with the code on the hand! I think to understand this you have to see the movie and realize what Nolan did in the movie! This is my opinion! It a actually IS AN IN HOUSE MVT! in my opinion!
There was no morse code on the seconds hand in the movie. And inhouse movement ? I don't think so. It doesn't come from the same factory as the rest of the watch.
They got rid of the eureka…..wtf.
works so much better in a 42....unless you have twig wrists.
Sounds like Bark & Jack or is it just me :/
42mm wasn't the problem, it was the 50.5mm lug-to-lug. Completely ridiculous.
I bought It but i would prefer a brushed bezel
What I’m having trouble with is paying 500 more for what essentially is a khaki field with a slightly different dial
Exactly my opinion as well...
You could say that across the watch industry tho.
4:23 I’m agree, I’m 24! Way too young to be owning this style of watch, buttttt there’s the love for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar movie on the other hand. Which it came in bracelet or NATO
you realize you could just buy a nato right?
Mock croc patent leather, and matched winklepickers, Style guru not.
No prize ever sent.
I don't really care about the movie, it's just a great looking watch.
If there’s one word I would never use to describe Hamilton it is “wacky”. The Murph watch looks like a pretty normal old watch. If anything I would say that their most popular designs are pretty conservative, except the Elvis watch
still sad they took our the mors code
Still no screw down crown on any Hammies??
Why do you need it?
@@Z06Wingnut yep I bet that’s exactly what the beancounters at the swatch group say when someone mentions improving their cash cow
@@maxc1484 realistically speaking, there is no good reason to have a screw down crown, unless you dive frequently. If not, the cons of having a screw down crown are overcoming the pros.
@@diavalus exactly. Folks want screw down crowns for the PERCEPTION that it matters much, and from an engineering standpoint it does not.
@@Z06Wingnut exactly. I used to refuse buying watches without a screw down crown for years, until I finally understood all the pros and cons. Nowadays, if a watch has a screw down crown, that’s more of a minus for me. For non divers, a watch without is a better fit for day to day life.
Eureka yok.
Found this by looking for Hamilton soundtrack gang
👇
Lovely watch but Hamilton have a pricing problem for me. The Khaki Field and Mechanical models are very affordable. Everything else jumps up quite sharply.
I just commented because every comment wins, pick me please 🙏
I miss the morse code is the only thing thought that was super fun.
I also liked this - would have liked to see it on this model but then I suppose it isn’t the original Murph watch.
Rrhaamilton..😂🤣😂
I'm not buying any non COSC certified watches anymore, it's not only about the looks you know. If Formex can do it..
I’m not buying anything except Casio with some kind of time sync (RC or BT) Oceanus, Edifice or Lineage. They look great, they have excellent build, they don’t need battery change except once in maybe 25 years, and they are much cheaper than any COSC rated watch, while being much better in every single way. The point of this, mechanical watches specs makes 0 sense from one point forward (the point of decent performance). It’s all about looks, tradition, brand name, and being different. I wouldn’t pay a dime more for COSC.
Have the 42mm and enjoy wearing it. It has only 2 flaws and they only fixed one flaw on the reissue 38 while introducing 2 new flaws (no Eureka and too thick). Absolutely NO reason for the 38 to be any thicker than the 42. The clunky lowbeat movement on both is a shame. Seriously considering swapping the movement to a smoother highbeat 2824 or SW200 movement. An $700+ watch should have a 28.8k bph movement.
its only a cheap little watch i wouldn't worry at its low price the movement is fine. i have a few rolex watches but love my 42mm version of this. the leather strap decent for a cheap watch too
The 38mm is a little girl watch. I've had them both and the 42mm is perfect.
A hefty price premium over the Hamilton Field Auto for essentially identical mechanicals, but I guess that's clever marketing for you. To me the 'Murph' will always be the original-sized version and not something massaged to please the 38mm brigade that's currently in vogue. If it makes you happy that's fine with me nevertheless.
Your name is always the same and you don’t like leather watches 😂
"It will go down in history as one my favourite movies of all time". Ah yes, history is interested in your likes and dislikes.
I prefer the 42 I workout I have strong big arms so 38 look like a girls watch on me.
Ill take the 38 over the 42. but why not 40 or 39. lol
Too young to love vintage. TF is that comment.
Why do Hamilton never listen to us about their crappy crystals, then? Same problem here - good watch ruined by a terribly reflective crystal. On a £900 watch, that’s absolutely inexcusable.
