    In this video, we'll take an in-depth look at the brand new Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm, a downsized version of the 42mm 2019 release based on a prop watch from the 2014 film Interstellar. For me, this is one of if not the best Khaki Field for a smaller wrist and maybe my favorite Hamilton release of 2022. What are your thoughts on the new Murph?

    Like many of us, I’ve been hoping and pleading with Hamilton to make this for some time now, and I honestly can’t believe it happened. Every time they posted shots of the Murph on social media, the calls for a 38mm version were overwhelming, with good reason: this has a great chance to be more than a niche film tie-in. This could possibly be the Hamilton equivalent of an Explorer or Aqua Terra, even more so than the HKFM or Auto. It’s perfect blend of uniqueness, Hamilton-specific design, story/heritage, and versatility. I really hope this will become a big seller for them, and I hope to own one soon.

    Sometimes you find a model, and you can't explain why, you just love it. I have it with the murph. Its the perfect match between dress and field because its very easy to read. Nothing but hours, minutes and seconds, the hands are ultra pointy and classy. And you can wear it with anything. I would just have used a shard shape into the seconds hand, to make it pop but its a personal choice.
    It's a bit too expensive for me but someday... I swear I'll have it. Best field watch with cathedral hands ever.

    I’ve had mine for nearly four months. Love it. Have to sell my Seiko alpinist bc the murph made it redundant. The only cons so far are the weak lume, the dial (looks a little cheaper in person, and the stiffness of the strap. The strap is actually really good looking, but it’s taking forever to break in. Silver lining is that the stiffness of the strap motivates me to wear this more in hopes of breaking it in lol. As for the dial, I would have loved a lacquered black. I think it would have made the whole dial “pop.” Love it though. For $700, I couldn’t have asked for more.

    It's interesting that the biggest complaint about the smaller watch is the absence of the Morse code; my biggest beef with the "original" is that it _did_ have the Morse code. As far as I'm aware, the one in the movie didn't have it, so a replica shouldn't either.

    • @rogerwatt3154
      @rogerwatt3154 Год назад +4

      I tend to agree . . . the absence of the morse code on the 38mm is a real plus for me as, while I thought the movie was great, the connection isn't why I'd buy the watch. I don't mind the price but too much reflection in the crystal and a boring strap are other negatives.

    I bought the 42 without realizing they had issued it in 38. I think given that I relate the watch to a father giving it to his daughter the larger size makes more sense but it is a big watch. I'm probably going to need to add a hole to the strap so it doesn't flip around on my 6.5 inch wrist. I do value the connection to the movie so the Morse Code on the seconds hand is a must. My dad as a WWII vet knew Morse Code so I like that about the original watch.

    I am shocked by how well it is finished even under your macro shot, considering it cost less than USD1000. I mean, even Rolex watches has dust and lint and rough finish on their dials and markers. I am very happy with my 38mm Murph, but now even more impressed!
    And Teddy, the 42mm with morse mode = Movie tribute watch. This 38mm without the morse code makes it THE real watch on the movie where it actually does not have the morse code motif, granted, 42mm reduced to 38mm.
    And the 42mm case is chosen for better close up shots and to fit the mechanism that is in charge of moving the hands for the morse code scene. While 42mm is the size of the movie prop watch, 38mm would be far more realistic to be worn by Murphy.

Would have been way cooler to me if it had something like the enamel inlay caseback with stars like the 61 conquest, or just an equivalent engraved artwork that references the movie in some way. I think that would raise the value and make it more collectible to me. Maybe there's an idea for a true limited edition ;).

And in my opinion, I think the 42mm case size of the original prop watch was more so because of it's utility in the filmmaking process (a bigger dial is easier to film, and a bigger case would accomodate that unique mechanism for the story) rather than a design choice of being just a watch. In-universe, the watch would probably be a 38mm. So the 42mm is the recreation of the prop watch which acknowledges itself as based on a prop, while the 38mm is probably a real life recreation of the watch in-story.

    Teddy the real movie watch did not have the morse code so this is a better interpretation of the dil. But I guess it is a matter of preference. I got the watch from ebay barely used for $650 so it makes all the sense to me. At 38m this watch is amazing.

    Love this watch. I did not know it had AR coating. That's a compelling reason to actually swap out my current 38mm khaki field auto. I also didn't know it had a different lug lenth. That's also a plus but I assume then the 38mm traditional khaki auto's metal bracelet doesn't fit on the Murph perfectly? Can anybody confirm this? If I could use the steel bracelet on the Murph I'll definitely be buying

    I love the Murph, I have the old model and was weary about the size but it's fine on my little under 7" wrist as the lugs drop down. This new 38mm version should wear better though. The dial design is brilliant in my humble opinion but the lume isn't the best like a few of the Hamilton field watches out there. What I love about the Murph is that old watch look, the aged lume, the matt hands combined with the crystal that on my watch does not look like it has any AR coating in the inside just work so well but it does have modern mechanicals. The new 38mm should feel and read better so I'll have a look next time I'm at the AD but not sure it would result in a purchase.. If I didn't have the original I would have to sleep on it as I do like the Morse code on the seconds hand. Do I want to sell my original Murph? Certainly not.

    I own the 42mm and one point I'd like to make is that as appealing as all these press and marketing shots are, you will NEVER see the dial *as depicted* in any of these shots. The crystal (and bezel) are SO reflective, that regardless of the position you hold the watch (try as you may) you will never see the dial without the ever present GLARE that never goes away. Yes, you can read the dial, no, it will never appear as black as it does in the shots shown in this video. It's a common problem in marketing shots (most brands are just as guilty) but in this watch it's just more noticeable--meaning you can't ignore it! Otherwise, it's an amazing watch that I actually paid just under $700 for--in a damn mall!

    Awesome watch..would love to grab one later down the line..but the "issue" with the "seconds hand" and not having Eureka in morse code..is in fact actually more faithful and correct with the film..the prop watch didn't have Eureka on it..even though it was 42mm..so in fact this is more true and in line to the film watch..just a smaller version..some people have pointed out..putting "Eureka" is more of a gimmick..I personally dont mind it not having it on the watch..lol kinda surprised Teddy that you didn't "research" this topic a little more about the "seconds hand" and you didn't mentioned that without it..its more faithful to the film..which is correct..not the other way around..

    Hey Teddy thanks for the video, which watch do you wear when this video was filmed?

  • @WordsDarkerThanTheirWings
    @WordsDarkerThanTheirWings Год назад +6

    I LOVE Hamilton field watches. They're simple, rugged, and just plain cool. The problem is I have an absurdly tiny wrist (5 1/2 inches), so I can't wear 90% of the watches out there. I love everything about this watch, the face, the hands, the simplicity of the whole thing. Everything. So when I saw the lug to lug was actually smaller than their field watches, which I can't wear, I was ecstatic.
    I just bought the Marathon MSAR 2 weeks ago and wasn't planning on buying another more expensive watch for a long time, but I have been working lots of overtime just to get this watch. In a week or 2, it will be mine.
    On another note, I love all your videos, Teddy. You can clearly tell you love watches, ALL watches, and you're never, ever condescending towards anyone who has a different interest than you. You are my go-to watch guy, and I appreciate everything you do for us.

      Most people are used to divers and chronographs, which start to look smallish when going below 40mm. For a watch without a functional bezel 38mm is a nice and versatile size.

    I like the 38m size with a 6.8-inch wrist I have 42's are just too big. The problem I have with Hamilton is the long lugs. They make it wear much bigger. I like how Seiko does their lugs. I also prefer to have 24-hour time like the older hamilton where it has smaller numbers above the usual say 1, 2, 3 it would also have in small numbers 13 14 15 for the hour.

    I just bought the 42 mm version. I was debating buying the 38 mm version but I noticed when I zoomed in I couldn’t see the Morse code on the second dial. (I was comparing the 38 mm and 42 mm Murph watches on the Hamilton site before I watched this video).
    If there’s a debate, I’m on the side of the debate where the 38 mm version isn’t really the Murph without the Morse code Eureka on the second hand.
