  • Why do you need an oil catch can? In this video I go over installing a vehicle specific oil catch can in line of the positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV) install in my 2006 Nissan 350Z. This is one of the more important support mods to me because I believe it helps keep the intake manifold clean and give you a better air and fuel mixture.

    Another issues some cars have is under high G forces in a corner the oil can slosh to the side and be more susceptible to being sucked into the PCV system and burning the oil there. 300ZX's are well known for this, my 300ZX did it pretty bad as well. Great video by the way!

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  8 лет назад +4

      I can definitely see that being an issue if you let it get too full. I would just drain it before any spirited driving session and on a baffled version like this, you really shouldn't have any issues.

    • @400Redsport
      @400Redsport 7 лет назад +5

      I don't think you understood what he was saying, he isn't talking about the catch can but the engine itself. During hard corners, the pcv system sucks up oil that get's pulled to one side of the engine so it sucks more oil up into the can. Which I can say is pretty spot on, mine does that a good bit.

  • @Z33Garage
    @Z33Garage 8 лет назад +12

    I know you did not show it, but the strut bar is under load, if you don't back out the strut tower nut on top, you will strip the threads on the strut tower bolts. Lol ask me how I know.
    You also beat me to this install. My catch can is coming this week.

    • @Z33Garage
      @Z33Garage 8 лет назад

      The drivers side usually can get oil under WOT per the fsm. So a good thing to do is to check the inside of the Z tube and throttle body for oil.
      You can run 2 cans, one on each side and keep the system closed, or run 1 can with both venting to atmosphere, but you need to close the inlet on the intake as well as drill out the PCV valve on the drivers side, otherwise the engine will stall.
      Na Zs usually don't need both sides, the main issue is always with the drivers side as you point out.

      +Z33 Garage I watch your installs man. You should have way more subscribers by the quality of your videos, anyways will you be installing a catch can like this or like the one you mentioned that has a breather?

    • @Z33Garage
      @Z33Garage 8 лет назад

      +josh boss thanks man! the catch can I will be installing will be for a single bank, no breather. Just like in this video, except I will also install a smaller can on the drivers side, for the hell of it since it's sitting in my toolbox.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  8 лет назад

      Ya from what I've researched that vent leading to the intake tube only comes into play at WOT like you mention, so it's not as big of an issue as the other side. Plus I'm not sure how many people are going to be into plumbing that much more work.

    Sorry, I don't have time for the full video right now, but from the few minutes I've seen, I want to say, that I agree only needing the oil catch can to work on the PCV side. The other side of the engine is meant to draw air while the PCV vents for both sides of a V engine. I've seen lots of diagrams that match my comment, and unless engineers simply are wrong about the physics, you're doing what makes sense for the design.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  7 лет назад +3

      DE Nichols Ya we didn't want to alter what the engineers had already set up. I really don't like it when people attach both sides to one can with a vent.

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 7 лет назад +1

      AnthonyJ350 Exactly. I know it would interrupt with the correct flow through the system. At worst it'd make the catch can ineffective and at best hooking up to both sides would make the system less effective.
      The side without the PCV is meant to bring fresh air in. When the engine has higher pressure, then the PCV lets gases and a little oil escape.
      The pressure is always going up and down. A catch can is supposed to just catch unwanted oil on the way back to the intake when the pressure is high. If it's hooked up to both ends it's mixing the intake and "exhaust" if you will.

    • @CarGuy87
      @CarGuy87 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the information. But don't you think that if the side with no PCV lets air in, wouldn't it make sense to put a breather filter on that side only? (since there is no pcv and its purpose is to simply let air in). I totally agree with you on the PCV side. The oil catch can is needed there.
      Let me know your thoughts. Following this factory system, it seems that most oil catch can kits for the VQ are not designed correctly then. If someone could clarify on why pcv is on one side and not the other would be great. Thanks guys.

  • @tombryan1

    Sorry, you are wrong with your definition of a PVC system. It is there to relieve pressure in the crankcase from piston movement, not the cylinders. It is supposed to simply open for Positive pressure and close for negative pressure, a 1 way valve either spring or gravity held. Usually gravity held in the closed position. In practice, very little oil should pass through but the Infinity G35 has a relatively poor design to vent gasses. It is also a closed design where as years ago it was simply allowed to spill out on the road through a drop tube vacuum induced by forward car movement..This should have been addressed by design engineers and mandated by the EPA for emission standards but I guess the combustion chambers and catalytic converters burn it and convert it.

    I installed a Mishimoto catch can between the PCV valve and intake. Drove the car around for about an hour and every time I came to a stop and idled huge clouds of white oil smoke billowed from the exhaust. Got home and drained 8 oz of oil from the can. Switched to an open system with a K&N filter on top of the can and no more smoke. Why was that happening?

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  6 лет назад +1

      Richard Knight What happens when you go back to stock for the PCV (no can at all)? The can sealed should not do that. I have a write up why PCV is important to avoid ring flutter.

    How would one drain the catch can back into the oil pan without defeating the PCV valve? The gasses in the oil pan and the valve cover are the same. There linked by drain holes through the block and head. The PCV valve function is not to ventilate the engine so you don't suck blow-by at the wrong time.

      I prefer purchasing anything through PAYPAL, because if there is an issue PAYPAL can step in and help you get a refund. This company is legit and makes a very high quality product. Baffled, no filter. Tell him you saw this video.

    Do you have a tutorial for installing a oil catch can for 2018 Infiniti Q50? I'm planning on getting Mishimoto MMBCC-UNI-BK (larger) or Mishimoto MMBCC-MSTWO-RD Compact Baffled Oil Catch Can, 2-Port, Red (smaller). Whichever would fit inside these tight Nissan / Infiniti engine bays. Don't know which hose is the PCV and the other end to the air manifold b/c I can't trace the line.

      Definitely don't do this for anyone that's reading this! Seriously wtf man, why would anyone think this would be a great idea is beyond me? The oil it's catching is contaminated with all kinds of gases and vapors. This is the most assinine shit I've ever heard to do to your car. You have no clue wtf you're doing for one. This is why anyone who's considering getting a G35 or 350z need to buy one from an older person. Not some kid who riced the hell out of it and likely ran it to the ground. Doing dumb shit like putting oil residue from a catch can back into the engine ruining these cars.
