Are the 'Essex Boys killers' innocent?

  • On a December morning in 1995 two Essex farmers stumbled upon the aftermath of the most infamous gangland hit since the Krays.
Inside a blue Range Rover were the blood-soaked bodies of violent drug dealers Tony Tucker, Pat Tate and Craig Rolfe. All three had been blasted in the head with a pump action shotgun.
In 1998 Jack Whomes and Michael Steele were sentenced for life for what became known as The Essex Boys murders.
Both have always insisted they’re innocent.
And now, as Whomes is finally released from prison, their claims are backed by two former senior detectives.

Not sure why people go on about this case. Some drug dealers got rubbed out by some other gangland heavies. Happens every day all over the world. Their supply killed a girl, and that brought unwanted attention on a lot of people -- at various levels. I understand they were also pretty reckless in how they were operating in terms of threat-making, using their own product etc. A matter of time for these guys, and the same goes for 99% in the same business today, or a thousand years from now.

Look at Mexico the cartels are now so big and powerful there are only 2 ways to stop them. 1. A full US invasion of Mexico 2. The US and Europe legalise everything and they will end up like the mafia in America as in they’re nowhere near as powerful as what they were 30 years ago. A few days after the boozeup one of the guys (who was friends with Kevin and close friends of mine) told me that he had heard from a reliable source that a crew from Canning Town had done it, none of the guys who partied had anything to do with it but they knew an awful lot of people.
That was a couple of weeks before "Billy" was arrested.

There is no doubt the two men convicted were intelligent criminals, but there is also no doubt about the accepted professional manner in which the killings were carried out, leaving no forensic evidence of any use etc.. Being a clever criminal and a professional hitman is a whole different thing,It takes a special sort of emotionless, cold steel nerve gained only by experience and/or training to calmly and successfully kill three men in cold blood while keeping your identity hidden.
Even though they may be hardened men and had a motive, they are not professional killers and from what I can gather, only part of a long queue of men with a motive to remove them,it seems they were the easiest to convict.

The concept of a professional hit man is something of a rarity in organised crime.
If your a drug lord with dozens of violent criminals under your command why would you pay a very expensive hitman?
If your a drug lord with 3 men you want dead I imagine your going to have to get your own hands dirty in order to make sure things go how you want them to. I wouldn't trust anyone else with that kind of thing.

Ok my first question, which I’ve been trying to get some kind of “answer” to, but with zero luck: At (approx) 0:25 here, it says the three men “had been blasted to death with a pump-action shotgun”.
But in an account given by someone who was ‘very Well placed”, one of the two men who were found guilty in court was alleged to have “opened up on ‘(I forget which man)’, with Both Barrels”. But of course, pump-actions are single-barrelled. So immediately something doesn’t add up there…….

When they say it was looked at by the appeal court and the verdict stands. Is not exactly true the appeal court doesn't look at everything instead it looks at certain parts but they should look at everything in effect meaning they get a new trial. Saying they do get a new trial means people are getting the wrong idea of appeals. They don't get a new trial and conditions are laid out about everything. This is wrong a new trial should be exactly that a new trial far less wrongful convictunes would keep returning again and again if they got a new trial in the first place

Steve Nipper did it, he was an ex gangster who fell out with the Essex Boys and his family threatened by them and already shot Tate. He knew it wasn't finished, the Essex Boys would either get him eventually for his shooting Tate or he had to do it 1st. Nipper would've have no shortage of people willing to help because pretty much everyone hated them and what they became. Don't need to be a pro to load cartridges into a shotgun and pull the trigger..and for the lack of fingerprints etc why would there be any? they ambushed them shooting all 3 so where would the fingerprints be? on the cartridges? heard of gloves? one man to carry out this hit by himself is unlikely even with a pump action he would of had to shoot them so fast that none of them could even react...plus if this guys story is so legit why's he refusing to give names? "he's scared" thats why he cried a river and told the coppers at the first opportunity that for all he knew could of got the shooter caught? makes sense, don't believe any of it....imagine they actually did do it and they manage to overturn it and then get PAID compensation for wrongful prosecution i mean the UK justice system would be the laughing stock of the world, paying murderers for killing people simply because of slight inaccuracies in a story.
No matter what you think of them nobody deserves to be trapped in a car and blown to bits with shotguns at point blank...and the fact someone can blow 3 guys heads to bits and then carry on like normal and could walk the streets again is very alarming, also the fact that only recently their appeals got rejected due to no change in evidence and too much evidence that they did commit the crimes tells you everything you need to know...all this nonsense is just crooks trying to get their sentences lowered with the full support of ex police officers and lawyers who only care about £££..do they really believe these guys are innocent? would they be willing to risk these murderers getting out and killing again? anyone who can blow someone to bits with a shotgun should never ever be allowed out of prison, even if he is innocent so what? its been that long if he did get out then he'd probably just go on a shooting rampage anyway...

I'd wager about 25% of all convicts are probably innocent. The legal system doesn't care whose guilty or not, its a huge money making machine that's like a never ending theatre performance. The court case is the production and the accused is just another guest in the show whose fate is of little consequence in the grand scheme of things. The outcome is governed by the victor of a legal argument not so different to a game of chess, which depends entirely on the knowledge skill & cunning of the barrister that wins the legal argument while being overseen by the judge, whose role is that of a referee. The outcome has as much significance as a boxing match to everyone except the person standing in the dock, and the victim and their family. For everyone else it's a payday. Many guilty people walk away, and many innocent people get sent to prison. Its luck of the draw, on the day, and highly dependent on who has the best barrister. It has nothing to do with law and order at all.

The other thing is that it was a rural farmland area with a shooting range literally just down the road. Nobody would think twice about hearing gunshots and it's been suggested the killing was timed to blend in. Also, the track doesn't connect to the shooting range so no members of the public would be there.
It's very likely the trio died around 6:30-7pm. Tucker was a well liked regular at a local restaurant and was on good terms with the staff - he had a group booking for 8pm, and despite phoning earlier in the evening to increase the size of the booking for 2 extra guests, they were all no-shows.

In daytime, sounds different, to night time, also weather conditions on a cold still night can hear the thud from 2/3 fields over.

Why do the Police stick to the idea that the murders took place at the time Billy Jasper stated?
He said around midnight, but maybe he lied or was mistaken.
Why couldn’t it have happened at or around 7pm?
Is there some irrefutable evidence that corroborates his timeline of events?
If not, his entire story could have happened 5 hours earlier which fits the evidence at the trial.
They died at or close to 7pm, there were no more phone calls from the trio after 7.00, they had a restaurant booking in Romford with their respective Partners at 8pm, at the autopsy there was a quantity of digested food STILL in the stomachs of two of the victims from a meal they’d eaten at TGI Fridays @ 1-2 pm ( it’s unlikely they would have eaten after that ) it takes approx 4 hours to digest food in the stomach before it then moves to the small intestine.
Pat Tate had eaten at the same time, but his stomach had emptied by the time of his death ( bodybuilders metabolism tend to burn food quicker). They’d been running about since around 3.30-4pm going back to collect the RangeRover at the five bells and simply didn’t have time to eat elsewhere.
They’re stomachs would have been empty by midnight if they were still alive, and there was NOTHING to stop one of them phoning their partners and telling them they’d been delayed.
They HAD to have died about 7 pm.
