- Gary's VLOG: I hope you enjoy, for today's VLOG entry I take a look back to my first 5 years as a beekeeper. I started this channel heading into year 6. Its been a wild ride. Much more ups than downs. Thanks for coming on this journey with us. I wish I had talked more back then, but at the time I was coming off a photojournalism career and just about the visuals.
Its been a year since we started this channel. Lots of things have happened. Lots more to come. Hopefully by now you have been introduced the Mike, Michelle and Uncle Marty. Those are just the full-time players, we have other friends and hands to introduce along the way.
This journey toward commercial beekeeping is not for the faint of heart. Its been a hard road, most told us it couldn't be done. Especially in our area with poor forage. There is no roadmap for this. One day you wake up with a bunch of bees and you better figure out how to make money instead of costing more and more money. Then, with that solved, you get to have more BEES. Anyway, I hope this VLOG is a resource for those of you trying to figure out how to make a dime on honey bees. I'll try not to bore y'all to death, unless you are like me and love to nap to good youtube content.

Haha, Thanks Trey. She sure is! When I had this idea for a channel it was just going to be shorts with beekeeping humor. That was my first joke. Wow. Great uniq video. thank you for sharing.. I think you should also use Tom Glenn and Dr.Harbo VSH lines %25 percentage. sometype disasse ( virus and microbes and others) crossing varroa bites. Vsh lines immunity better than ordinary bees.
Thanks, it was a fun edit. Got to reflect on a wonderful time. In my experience with VSH bees they have been a little defensive for our needs. I don’t mind treating for mites. Wish more of our neighbors would.
@@honeybeesunlimited In our area, neighbors do not treat varroa. In autumn, 70-100 varroa per day are carried from neighbors to our hives. I saw that you use terramycin in your video. Have an effective nature mixture on hand.
Essential Oil Recipe: (Chris Warner formula for varroa bite)
I gallon canola oil
100 ml eucalyptus oil
100 ml camphor oil
100 ml tea tree oil
4 rolls of blue shop towels cut in half will make 8 rolls of half sheets and will soak up all liquid. Apply a single half sheet per deep box. Not to be used with honey supers on. Effective for EFB (Other strains), Chalk brood etc. Improve bee immune system. Also small hive bettle doesn't like Essential Oil Recipe smell.
@@murat5103 Thanks for the share, we saw a little EFB last spring. Hit the with terramycin and cleared everyone right up as well as requeening. Our latest mite scare is now under control. We had a surge in brood this fall. You know what a surge in brood means, more mites. Feeling good now. Two weeks out of treatment we are back to 0's

Hey Scott, Thanks for tuning in. So third season coming up? We are up in north Texas. Mostly Denton and Cooke counties. This has been such an incredible journey, Beeks are some of the nicest folks. Glad your loving it we need more beekeepers. Gary
I just checked your channel, your a trapper too. Thats how we got our start. Built a dozen swarm traps. Caught 40 colonies in our first year, then we had to figure out how to care for them. We soon realized it was an expensive hobby and we better put our girls to work.
@@honeybeesunlimited Yeah, I bought my first bees as a package, and I bought a queen to gentle a colony with Africanized tendencies, but all the rest were from traps, captures, cut-outs, and splits. I started with one colony, thinking that would be enough... then did a cutout a few months later... then caught a suicide swarm late in the year. All three over-wintered fine. Then Spring '23 happened and I couldn't afford the hives to keep up with all the opportunities. Caught 5 swarms in traps, probably as many cut-outs, a few splits... and I'm going into winter with 16. 15 Layens, and one Comfort hive.
