    The problem is that people need to take a weekend class from a master beekeeper before getting bees. I am a second year beekeeper. I took a weekend class and then did a one year mentorship...Bees die over winter usually because they were not treated for varroa mites prior to going into winter. Colonies shrink during winter so if your mite count is high and the colony is small they will not be able to control the mites..They also need to be feed sugar water or pollen so they don't starve over winter. You don't have to feed sugar water if you leave frames of stored honey in the box. The biggest problem is that people think they put a box in their yard, and that's it done... That's not the case... So now you catch a swarm ... Does anyone here know what to do next? When do you add a second box, when do you make a split, when do you feed them,what does the brood pattern look like, do you see eggs, do you have hive beetles or mites....ect ect. Take a weekend class, people, before getting bees..

    I’ve rescued 2 colonies last week. I feed mine a lot of sugar syrup when I catch a new swarm to build them up. They need it to build comb for the Queen to lay eggs and build up strong before winter hits. They do better in a big cluster. The second year I don’t feed them sugar. I’m in hot, dry Texas and once summer hits there’s very little food available for them.

    I think it is wonderful that you, along with Dr. Leo, are teaching natural beekeeping methods that have stood the test of time. I am certain, like myself, many people did not have this knowledge, as it has been replaced over time. Catching swarms of local bees is the correct path. Why buy bees when you can go out and catch some already acclimated to our own area. It makes perfect sense. Please keep the beekeeping videos with Dr. Leo coming! Thank you so very much!

    Where I live I never saw honeybees but I tried swarm traps anyway... no luck. I think because I'm so far from a town and I'm surrounded for miles and miles by a fir forest (for lumber production). • @Alkarasu
      @Alkarasu Месяц назад +2

      Well, if you never saw any bees or swarms it might mean that you're in luck and may actually exploit it for your benefit (and even some nice profit if it goes well). Due to your isolation, you'll be the only source of drones in the area, which means you can choose who your new queens mate with, and that would enable you to do some good selective breeding. Isolated places are naturally valued among beekeepers for that purpose.

All you need is a couple used frames that smell like bees to put inside the box and sugar water with a drop of lemongrass oil in a clean spray bottle. Spray the box twice a day inside with the mix, starting in March. No feeders needed.. Never have I had to buy bees, but I do give them away, when they swarm out.

    Swarm relocation tip:
    I have done this to every swarm i catch and it works. Take down the trap at night with a screen taped over it. Put the trap right next to the hive they will be transferred to. Put branches with leaves on them right in front of the trap totally covering the trap entrance, then remove the screen from the entrance. This will force the bees to realize they have been moved and they will reorient themselves to that specific location. This method allows you to move a trap any distance close by. It always works for me except for maybe a dozen stragglers at the old location. I learned it on RUclips as well while i was researching this problem of relocation.

    Had a family friend who was in bees and honey business who lived in Florida that’s where he ran his Honey business.He would transport his bees from Rayford Florida to W Va. Michigan Ohio and other states in mid west only during summer months then transport them back to Florida at summers end.You are right only buy bees locally.

    I’ve never had issues feeding sugar water as far as like it they go beyond that & need sugar water often in the Grand Canyon high desert.

    Great education bee keeping video! Love Dr. Leo! i have purchased a couple horizontal hives, frames, and wax from him - highly recommend. This new swarm trap looks improved over the plans i downloaded from his website 3 years ago. Bee keeping is hard work and can be very expensive to get started. Start small unless you have a crew.

    I have two hives and will be setting up a swarm trap soon. I ordered the book RAISING HONEYBEE QUEENS and some swarm trap lures, thanks for sharing the info and site.

      Yep, the real scam is making people believe you can catch “wild” bees. If your lucky, you might catch your neighbors swarm. But you probably won’t. Doug is clearly clueless about beekeeping.

    I think that study was done in bear country. Where I live bees nest anywhere above 6’ or so (skunks).
