Steve is one of the best white soul singers of the last 40 years...and this song proves it. Reminds me of the time I was heading to British Columbia trying to escape my thoughts and feelings of a wickedly sensual, yet tumultuous relationship with a girl in Saskatchewan. Warm summer night, 3 a.m. approx., the Trans-Canada Highway was lonely and dark but the sky was peppered with twinkling stars, and the tunes from an FM radio station out of Butte, Montana, were in synch with the balmy breeze that was washing me thin with its comforting fingers. What a mind-stirring recollection...me, my '66 Pontiac Beaumont, and this came over my very high-end stereo speakers, caressing my psyche in a manner that remains unmatched...I wish that night never ended.
"She takes him in the darkness, where the lonliest can feed. She gives him all he asks for, and it's no more than he needs." Great line from a great song!!!
Title track of a very good album in which Steve plays all the instruments as he did on Arc of The Diver. Was so glad he finally won 2 grammys in 86, for too many years his marvelous talent was overlooked!!!
Great song I love all the scenery just takes me into a whole new world where I can get lost and never come back , like bring in another world just awsome !!
"Talking Back To The Night" High above the heat of a summer New York street An out-of-work musician plays a solo saxophone He's a preacher and a teacher And he stands up all alone Stranded in the dark of a vision in the park A poet in his madness tries to find another line And he's losing and he's using And he says he's doing fine And they look from such a height That somehow it's all right They're talking back to the night It's all that they can do Talking back to the night It's how they make it through If you listen you can hear them Their voices draw you near them They're talking back to the night for you Something seems to take every dime the man can make His dream is getting smaller and he wonders where to turn And he's trying hard to make it And he's trying not to burn Woman never minds, pulls the shade and draws the blinds She takes him in the darkness where the loneliest can feed She gives him all she has to And it's no more than he needs

"Talking Back To The Night"
High above the heat of a summer New York street
An out-of-work musician plays a solo saxophone
He's a preacher and a teacher
And he stands up all alone
Stranded in the dark of a vision in the park
A poet in his madness tries to find another line
And he's losing and he's using
And he says he's doing fine
And they look from such a height
That somehow it's all right
They're talking back to the night
It's all that they can do
Talking back to the night
It's how they make it through
If you listen you can hear them
Their voices draw you near them
They're talking back to the night for you
Something seems to take every dime the man can make
His dream is getting smaller and he wonders where to turn
And he's trying hard to make it
And he's trying not to burn
Woman never minds, pulls the shade and draws the blinds
She takes him in the darkness where the loneliest can feed
She gives him all she has to
And it's no more than he needs
Very similar vibe as Night Train
@ 1:56 - What bridge is that?
To NothingnessLove: I know it's a year or so after you posted your comments, but I have to echo them anyway. I agree completely!
Definitely superior to the original cut
