This song epitomized the mid to latter 80's avante-garde vibe of night life culture and music style in the dance clubs. Everyone was swilling Michelob Lite so much so that this song was made into the best "The night belongs to Michelob" commercial in my opinion. Miss this music and era of the 80's where everyone got along, partied together and had a great time. Winwood may have had the most underrated voice and music creativity in the 60's to 80's time frame. Nobody and I mean nobody currently can sing like Steve Winwood can.

I used to love hearing this song when watching one of the popular "The Night Belongs to Michelob" commercials during the 1980s. It brings back so many pleasant memories.
An incredible song, a timeless masterpiece both in music and words - and produced with Steve Winwood playing all the instruments himself, at least on the original recording. A musician myself, I play several instruments - but having the scope and vision to put them all together in such a soulful, captivating way that makes them swing and groove despite the "artificial" studio production circumstances, despite the cold synth sounds of the day, and despite the temptation of overproducing the whole thing - that is just an unbelievably complex, superhuman achievement. Just WOW - all through the 34 years that I´ve known this song. It makes me cry and rejoice every single time I listen to it. Steve Winwood is an absolute genius.
Reminds me so much of the 80's. Hot summers in NYC. Fine ladies short skirts or tight pants with thier high hairstyles done up and of course downing cold Michelob. Great times!
Not surprising, since his father was a musician also. His brother, too,so he was exposed to music really all his life. And he learned from his family ,and what he did on his own.

Amazing song. Beautiful commentary on human existence, meaning, despair, love, and artists. This is not just jazzy music for a beer commercial in NYC. We are all talking back to the night in one way or another. For many years I talked back to the night 🌙 all around us all, looking everywhere for the light. That's the role of the thinker and artist. Really, that's the yearning of every person. Searching the darkness for meaning and a "higher love." Then, the Light and Love of the world 🌎 (John chapter 1) found me!!! Now I'm talking back to the Light!!! The higher Love, Christ, finds us. I pray He will give you a new ❤️ too! Thanks Steve! This is your Magnum Opus! John chapter 1...Grace to all.
Perfect for a twilight summer, around 20:30 pm...on atop of a hill with an open-wide view upon a suburban scenery view, dissappearing as long the remaining sunlight still stands...clear skies, nice breeze. Man, that's awesome! Some of those things that I'm grateful for being alive!

Steve Winwood. - They’re such a talented band. Stood the test of time. Used to go to all their gigs way back. Their music is just as good as today’s bands. Better, in my opinion. The Good Old Days, long since gone, unfortunately.
I remember when he was with Blind Faith. Traffic, Spencer Davis Group, Cream and Mary Ann Faithful. Eric Clapton used to sneak him in the the pubs to play because he was underage. He still sounds great!! This track is by far one of his best. I also loved"Arc of a Diver", and "Chronicles" . Steve OWNED the late '80's and '90's imho
The 80s AND the 90s (mostly) were a time where you could enhance the produced sound of a song WITHOUT covering up the sound of the talent that made the song. This song is WAY better than the original, but you still hear how beautiful Steve's voice is.
Incredible lyrics says ,a lot about life today. The pain and desire to be , successful. And how difficult is for some with addictions and sadness how real it all is . That' the brilliance he paints a picture and a feeling why I love music. ❤️

Steve does it all: band leader, composer, keyboards, guitar. But it was his voice that always grabbed me.
High above the heat of a summer New York street
An out of work musician plays a solo saxophone
He's a preacher and a teacher
And he stands up all alone
Stranded in the dark of a vision in the park
A poet in his madness tries to find another line
And he's losing and he's using
And he says he's doing fine
And they look from such a height
That somehow it's all right
They're talking back to the night
It's all that they can do
Talking back to the night
It's how they make it through
If you listen you can hear them
Their voices draw you near them
They're talking back to the night for you
Something seems to take every dime the man can make
His dream is getting smaller and he wonders where to turn
And he's trying hard to make it
And he's trying not to burn
Woman never minds, pulls the shade and draws the blinds
She takes him in the darkness where the loneliest can feed
She gives him all she has to
And it's no more than he needs
Some of the best lyrics you'll ever hear! Add that sax, and it's rock n roll heaven.

i cannot describe my feelings when hear this song. LA, night time, 80s movie credits, dawn birds flying.. Im thrown back to the first time i heard this song: at an internet cafe in Dublin, 2006. I was on a hunt for 80s tracks... still am. There's something so haunting about this song..
This masterpiece would be a perfect fit for a soundtrack of a Miami Vice episode
Timeless ❤
One of the greatest music of the 80's from a legendary singer.
Love this song❤
Masterpiece
Riding back home after a long night working, drinking and womanizing. Hop into my 88 mustang ,head north 94 with windows down.. ...doing ....mph.Listening to Windwood. Great times!!!
Steve Winwood. - They’re such a talented band. Stood the test of time. Used to go to all their gigs way back. Their music is just as good as today’s bands. Better, in my opinion. The Good Old Days, long since gone, unfortunately.

It's a good song now for a living in Portland Oregon. Or especially San Francisco.
Listened to this song loud while driving across the Clearwater bridge to the beach at night. Never forget it, brings back great memories.

No one in Amerikka even knew about the 1982 album. I never heard it until the 1987 "Chronicles" greatest hits album. Same for "Valerie."
@@jmaster38 1988

Hello Marianne,
How’re you doing?
Thanks for your love, support and for being an amazing fan! ❤️
It's nice meeting you here
I remember when he was with Blind Faith.
Are you sure he was with Cream?
My favourite one from Steve.
Hes a preacher and a teacher and he stands there all alone. Just like me.
As a native New Yorker, this video is very close to how I pictured this great song. Great photography
Then you might want to pull up his "Holding On" vid...only it's set in Greatest Generation, 1940's NYC.
love NYC, I'm a talent agent
+Kevin Liegey its VERY New York
OOOHH NO YOU'RE NOT!!
Beautiful song
Beautifully done. Thanks. The images are perfect.
2022..I still.love this...I first heard this in the 80's...
Driving back into Atlanta in the 90s coming into sight of the downtown at about 1 am. Just perfect....
This is my fav SW song!
Smooth & sexy 80's song. Steve Winwood does it right & that saxophone is spine tingling. I dare ya to not feel the urge to get up & move to the music!
One of the true greats.
The 80s AND the 90s (mostly) were a time where you could enhance the produced sound of a song WITHOUT covering up the sound of the talent that made the song. This song is WAY better than the original, but you still hear how beautiful Steve's voice is.
Had his greatest hits cassette in the early 1990s and always thought this was the best song. Still do.
I have a man-crush on Steve Winwood
Classical! Genius!
My favorite winwood song!!!
what a gem
Puts me back to the beer commercials on late nights. Feel like cracking one right now.
I agree. The remix is better than the original, which was too slow and hollow.
This song is magnificently deep
HELLO from Chile SUDAMERICA the song very best
Incredible lyrics says ,a lot about life today. The pain and desire to be , successful. And how difficult is for some with addictions and sadness how real it all is . That' the brilliance he paints a picture and a feeling why I love music. ❤️
A remarkable song of the amazing vagabond...the clown...the outcast, The One who is Authenticity on all levels, everywhere and nowhere. Thank you Stevie.
