In this video Daniel and Mick discuss Boost pedals. We have four kinds to hear: a treble boost, a dirty boost, a ‘clean’ boost and a mid boost. How do they react with clean and dirty amps? How do they react with another overdrive pedal? We’re here to find out…
The pedals we’re using today:

"It should sound like Stevie Ray Vaughan... more like Steve next door mowing the lawn"....classic
+Thomas Stonehewer Stevie Ray Lawn
when does this happen in the video?
ruclips.net/video/iRxN86LCsnQ/видео.html
I instantly thought "Stevie Mow Lawn" .. ha
With all the knowledge these guys have, I would love to see them focus on a Vox AC-15, or AC-30 and give us what they think would be the best pedals for the amp. Then move on to Fender amps, Marshall etc....
+225triman good call 225 ;)
225triman did the guys ever do this?
this
Totally agree.
That was equivalent to my observation that one of the main purposes of the show is to eliminate "you can" for the average guy.
I've been catching up on old episodes and this one was great fun, thanks fellas. Cheers.
Absolutely incredible tone at 30:50 - 31:00 ... Mick's "woah" says it all. Yet another great TPS; my favourite thing about Fridays! Thank you
What pedal is it?
Just did a search for boosters on your channels last night. You've become my first "go-to" place for in depth pedal info. Great job. So, when are you going to build a board for Anderton's?
Hah! The very question I was asking myself this morning - do I need a boost, and which do I need? Perfect!
It's not many channels that can keep me going for a half hour video but along with being very informative it's great to see two guys who are friends laugh and cut up while doing it. Great show guys.
Love your videos guys, keep up the excellent work!
I look forward to these shows more and more every Friday! Thank "That Pedal Show" it's Friday!!! Great vids, keep em coming!!!
Ps just hooked up my gigrig output 2 & hum dinger to an A/B switch for selecting Stereo (ping pong delay goodness) & Wet/Dry Rig (punch central) with a stomp. thanks Dan for some amazing products & inspiring new ideas for tone. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great demo, no stone left un-turned there lol! Really helpful guys, thank you for taking the time to do this. You have another subscriber :-)
great demo of the BD1 too😀 gona want one! And the tumnus another more time is awsome 😊 Thanks dudes
I just love my Keeley Java Boost, it's an amazing pedal and it was the one of the first guitar pedal I bought, it just has so many uses.
Love the show guys, as always, please keep up the good work! :)
+Richard Pawlyszyn Thank you Richard!
Great episode and great playing guys!
Great info guys! Enjoy hearing the interaction between clean and dirty amps.
+Kevin McCoy always an eye opener :)
This was a particularly awesome episode, guys. Love your show!!!
+john mcelroy cheers John :)
I really like your channel. I get a lot of good information about pedals.....esp the one where you guys discussed compressor placement.
Thanks That Pedal Show! I've built my pedal board today and as you know it can be an expensive thing to do if you have to buy some pedals and the board, power supply etc. But it has to be done if you're playing live. I had some pedals and bought a couple extra, but thanks to your show I've put it together in the order that you suggest for the front end and sent delay and trem to the effects loop. It sounds awesome and without your advice and suggestions I would not have got this result or known how to go about it in the way I did. Keep doing what you do it's interesting and useful.
+David Withington cheers D, glad it's been so useful :)
I just love your channel, guys. Keep rockin'!!
ow man! Thanks a lot you guys! Thanks for hearing me. I feel so special now! Keep on!
Hey dudes! Happy Friday! Hope you guys have a great weekend, and thanks for the video! Don.
I've got to say that the "That Pedal Show" is not only great fun but very informative. I have learned so much from it. By the way congrats to the Gigrig team who have just built me a pedal board to die for and my choice of pedals was very much inspired by this show. The G2 is a fabulous piece of kit, (thank you Dan) it's so easy to use and does so much more than I had envisaged or even imagined. The ability to move one pedal in every preset to another position in the chain without having to physically rewire it is a magical discovery and a godsend and the soft noiseless foot switches are terrific.
The quality of the build of my pedal board is first rate (well done Joe and Jake). It's the envy of so many. Thank you guys. The wet and dry amp set up is also a real quantum leap in terms of my tone and is inspiring my playing. So I am indebted, and please keep the show going.........Rest assured I shall be ordering a "That Pedal Show" T-Shirt and beanie to aid the cause. I can't thank you enough, Ian
+IAN Wicks That's fantastic Ian, thanks so much for your kind words. The MOST important part of all this is that you feel inspired to play and that you're loving it. If we've been a part of that journey we are humbly proud. Good on you and thanks for watching!
Learn-learn, learn-learn-learn, until my head aches! Most grateful for this channel even so.
Can we suggest ‘Listen, absorb, experiment, learn.’
There’s no learning without the experimenting bit. And disagreeing. We’re just the first step. Thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching!
I am loving that BD-1 amp. Great guitars into a great amp. What a sound.
I know it's an old video ... I just gotta say, Mick! Scorching blues lick at 14:09, you are into it man! My favorite tone as well. Cheer!
Thanks Mick and Dan..Loved tumnus>reverb>super reverb at 29.47. Very pleased to hear that mild overdrive/boost whilst retaining the character and sound of the strat and SR. I can hear it, but i can't explain it like you guys do, in term of mid pushed, mid humped, and mid scooped. It seems that a mid scooped amp responds nicely to a mildly accentuated mid range boost. I've given up trying to change what the SR is, but happy to finally find something that will work with it. The soul driven worked nicely also. Compliments also to your guitar playing. cheers
Thank you. The Super Reverb is a tweaky beast, especially the reissues where that bright switch can be so ugly... but in common with many Blackface Fender amps, a little mid push can be a wonderful thing. Similarly, the Tube Screamer with its mid push and top end roll off can be the perfect foil for the Super and bright switch. ‘Tis all a balancing act. Glad you found this useful!
Love the beginning with all bost pedals on. Nice guitar palying too.
Awesome channel! Subscribed immediately! Thanks!)))
Thank you Dan and Mick. Brilliant episode. Boosters rule! 😎
Guys. Just wanted to say I really appreciate these videos. As a 47 year old kid, I truly love the enthusiasm you have for the toys that make the tones. I love your down to earth approach and how much fun you seem to have. Peace!
+Judd Alexander Thank you Judd, we return the appreciation - very grateful for your time and kind words!
Just started getting into your channel, awesome videos! So many questions answered. I'd love to hear your thoughts on setting up pedal volumes throughout your effects chain. Thanks guys, keep it up!
+Andrew Ferguson Hello Andrew, and welcome! It's all about gain stacking and headroom - the very bedrock of ALL guitar tone. Most of our videos touch on it because it's such a massive subject, but perhaps there's a video here specifically. Great to have you along - thanks for watching!
This show needs more gags. Treble booster, strat into victory sounded amazing. I appreciate the step by step thorough explanation including all the various variations
What a great episode guys! Best moment for me: @ 25:17 - Mick :- "What's that?!" Dan :- "That's the 2 amps together.." Mick:- "That's a KILLER sound!" Dan:- "Well now let's put a booster into that!" Mick:- "What a CRACKING sound!!"
Couldn't agree more! Best tone of the episode for me :))
Hello. Thanks again for a new video!
Man this makes me want the Tumnus even more. Sounded great with the strat.
Wonderful job, guys!
This so informational, and it's about awesome guitar tones. Probably the best channel on RUclips.
+nobodyhere cheers N :))
Really enjoying your shows! in Incredibly helpful!
I think it would be really interesting to compare multieffect digital modelling technology with the original to see just how far technology has come or whether you still can't beat the real deal.... anyways keep up the great work!
So the whole episode I was on edge just waiting for Mick's guitar to bump into Dan's. Move over Mick so I can relax while watching your awesome shows. BTW, I am a tab bit OCD.
+That Pedal Show, would love to see a video on getting two guitar tones to sit well with each other live - playing 2 different parts
We need more videos like this
Super reverb.... It just....wow.. 😭 you guys really answered my questions on booster. Love that strat into the treble booster and into the super reverb . Again, you guys really did a great job!
+Aqmal Shah cheers A, glad you like it :)
revisiting this vid led to a glorious jam with my java boost
single coils + tumnus+bd1, that was pure gold fellas, thank you for that.
Always an informative pleasure, guys.
+brian patrick cheers Brian 🤓
I have a Soul Food and a MXR Micro Amp on my board. One of my favorite sounds is using a clean amp and setting the SF so it's breaking up slightly and then pushing it with the micro amp.
Well shoot, I guess I need a treble booster now. Great job guys. Great tones as always.
I know you guys did a video recently on stereo vs. wet/dry rigs, but I was wondering if you could discuss wet/dry/wet setups with a guitar amp and a stereo power amp. I would love to see what you guys can do with that. You always make it sound good!
Strat > Treble booster > Overdriven amp = WOW
Amazing video as always. For me, EQ pedal is the best volume boost.
Glad to have you along!
killer channel guys ,love it !
Great playing guys! Great video!
+Ryan Pearsall cheers Ryan ;)
Aloha from Hawaii guys...love That Pedal Show! I know it's not a new concept, but would love it if you guys did a show on using guitar effects pedals for vocals. Maybe you could have a vocalist guest on. It would be good to know more about impedance issues and overall the sound of different guitar effects on the voice. Mahalo and keep up the good work!! Aloha
All great tones......the Tumnus seemed to turn my head more than the others.....good job Wampler
Great episode guys. I keep coming back to my favorite EP booster into my OD of choice. Very juicy... Where do you think this sits in the spectrum of boosters. Some days I think its reasonably clean and flat, then other days much like my high school art teacher.
Keep up the great work.
amazing videos.and what can i say about your guitar tones!!just tonetastic!!thank you dan and mick for sharing your knowledge.cheers from india!!
Im not new. But, my appreciation has grown substantially!! Onward!!
Great, as always. Would love to see your thoughts on the Vertex Boost folks are on about lately. Cheers!
I heard at least 500 different tones that I loved in that video!
+That Pedal Show this is an excellent video. Thanks, very helpful!
easily one of the best ones. great job
"steve mowing the lawn" is my tone target lol thanks ya'll!
Another great show guys! Would be interesting to see a show comparing different fuzz + overdrive combinations. ie. Fuzz Face + Marshall type OD, Rat + Big Muff. Cheers guys!
+Nigel Cristobal good call Nigel :)
That riff Mick plays at 14:00 is just so massive!
Outstanding demo! Now using my java boost before my Archer Ikon and Butler Tube driver...drives them both in to pure bliss with a little help from a Flashback delay and a Wet Reverb :). Warning: Do not attempt to play along with Mick's Strat on this demo..perfectly tuned guitar, but the pitch will forever remain a mystery ;) Keep up the great work, guys!!
Awesome video. Great idea to run the pedals into differend amps and play with differend guitars.
Great tones all around, but man some of those sounds coming from Mick's Strat..... Heavenly!!! Keep the videos coming guys!
+jeff Whitley yeah, that strat really comes to live with some of these configurations. And you can tell Mick has been playing it forever - looks and sounds very comfortable with that guitar.
I really dig the RC Boost, it's kinda of a go to pedal when I'm playing my twin or my little vintage Supro
14:03 Mick´s taking over Dan`s gesture from before with a lick from RATM Bullet in your head. true passion boys ;)
+Peter Michael Kellner cheers Peter ;)
Hey Guys,
I would just like to say that you're show is killer! I've learned heaps about how to use pedals and shape the tone to find that sound! I recently purchased a QMX 6 as well, such a great tool! Keep up the fantastic work!
Also, I recently moved overseas and had to leave my amp behind:(... Maybe you guys could do a show about going straight into a sound board, which is what I've been battling with for the past year haha. Especially when the sound guy feels a divine calling to EQ your instrument every 5 mins....
The Collins is sounding absolutely gorgeous, Mick! Hope to see more of it. And thanks for the junior GAS damn you ;)
+Otto Eklund Thanks Otto, it's a very special guitar for sure!
Xotic RC booster is a cracking pedal, start a gig with it on, end a gig turn it off. Job done
Mick, sounds like you've been practicing, my friend! Killer playing on the Strat. The Tumnus brought out the best in both of you.
I love the Catalinbread Galileo, combining treble boost and overdriven AC-30. Brian May in a box.
I love the XOTIC EP BOOSTER! I don't even look at others any more.
Great show ............AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys are costing me a lot of money ha ha! I love the reviews they are always entertaining and you are the best at putting great products put through their paces. The only problem is I want them all! I did buy the Sheriff 22 based on this review and it is awesome, I just can’t say enough about the tones you can get out of it. I have been a Fender man for years with an original 65 Deluxe Rvb and 66 Pro Rvb, as well as Blues jrs and a Webber Dumble clone of sorts which is too loud, they are great in their own way, but the Victory does so much and at a reasonable volume. With the 22 I can dial the bass and mids back a bit and up the treble and I have a fairly nice fender tone and then hit channel 2 for that lovely Marshall gain. Great job guys, I hope my budget holds out.
Would love to see a video on different ways of getting a volume boost for solos with tube amps. Looking for ways to get a Db boost for solos over the top of the rest of the band without necessarily trying to drive the amp harder or getting more gain.
Thanks for all you do!
Sure hope either one of you can play one on your show soon! I preferably like the maple or rosewood with lite satin neck, body in what ever color ,,and actually fond of the duel fulcrum vibrato, I found out why Leo Fender said it was his best work ever. thanks for the response. I say play what ever makes you as happy as Daniel with his Tele.
Great timing as always 👍🎸☕️
As a bassist I'd love to see some traditional guitar effects on bass to show versatility.
Thakk Mylde it's not a fucking bass show ffs
God I love Fridays! Great work guys. My EP is also a pedal I think I can never take off the board. I'm also currently blown away by radioheads new album. Is there any chance of persuading Ed to talk us through his approach to creating his guitar textures? Not your traditional bluesy guitar fare, but it would be fascinating and a wonderful episode - his work has really inspired me. I've even just bought a looper!!
Cheers guys
Thanks for another great show. My stream-of-consciousness bullet list: 1 - I love the sound of Mick's Collings (his Strat is pretty sweet-sounding as well). 2 - I LOVE it when Daniel goes into "shred mode". 3 - I LOVE the Platonic method premise with Daniel as Socrates and Mick as Phaedrus (or is it vice versa?). 4 - This is still the only show I feel reveals the tones of the various pedals in a subtle and significant way - kudos for your studio/engineering (slash-musicianship). 5 - The format is really the perfect platform from which to show off the gigrig - incredible. 6 - This is pretty much my favorite show, and is yet one more reason I look forward to Friday.
+Jason Vanzant your comment has made my day. Thanks for taking the time Jason, really appreciate it :)
+Jason Vanzant All we can say is thank you, Jason. You are clearly a discerning gentleman and we are honoured by your patronage. Thank you sir!
Pedal order suggestion, as I was pleasantly surprised by how good this sounded, try a fuzz face style pedal into a treble booster. When I received my analogman sunlion (fuzz face and treble boost 2 in 1) that is the default order of the pedals. Into a nicely compressing valve amp it's really glorious and having the treble boost after (his has a "mid" "low" and standard switch, great for matching guitars), you can really articulate the fuzz face. The treble boost, also being germanium, reacted in an interesting way in that order. I've also tried that pedal into a prince of tone into a super and it's mega. Thanks for the vid as always!
6:31 That moment should be the show's logo! HAHAHAHA
Hello again guys, still loving the show. So, with something like the TC Spark Booster with its EQ controls, gain control & fat/mid options etc, can you cover a lot of the ground of the different boost types?
That Les Paul and Carpe Diem together! Man oh man!
Whatever you throw after it will sound killer!
Killa Sound!!!! Great tones.
Frickin love my Tumnus.Use is with an SG and a Princeton mainly.Great👍🏻
Great, cheers guys!
Some majestic tones, gentleman. I will use a boost to punch out of a mix for a solo but often get told its too loud - subtlety is not really my strong point. When dialling in a boost pedal is there a sweet spot that is commonly found that pushes the sound over the top but without drowning out the dynamics? Actually, would you do a video on how you dial in pedals - would be great to learn what you are listening out for when you set up a rig.
That strat with the Tumnus is absolutely sublime!
+Jamie Pettersen sure is :)
Hey, another great episode! Will you also put on sale the white tps t-shirt with the black sleeves that you are wearing in some videos?
+M Fb Yes we will. Mick is ordering them tomorrow!
Great show, fella's... I'm such a huge fan!! It's so great to get such knowledgeable and practical advice from two fine chaps. I have a request... Could you PLEASE do a video discussing 60 cycle hum as it pertains to single coils. What it is, what affects it, and most importantly: best ways to tame it. There is SUCH a misunderstanding about it and you guys could help set the record straight. Thanks again!!!
+Adam Narrell yep, great idea Adam ;)
+Adam Narrell Hey Adam, Mick here. It might work for a show... I've been playing Strats my whole life. The biggest hum exacerbaters are lights and screens. There are other things too, but those are the ones you encounter as a guitar player the most. You just learn to deal with it by physical position and using your volume control when you're not playing. In my opinion - and I'll just be clear that this is my own personal opinion - any physical or electronic intervention to get rid of the noise (noiseless pickups, noise gates etc) makes the guitar/amp/pedals sound less good to me. The other essential element is having your power/isolation really well sorted on your board, so that you're adding no more noise than you absolutely have to.
For the show, we sit there under lights and in close proximity to the amps. The single coils do hum, but we manage it with the volume pot on the guitar and physical position. If we can get a show out of that, we'll do it! Thanks for watching!
Great show! Learned more about boost pedals in 35 minutes than in all the years before. Have you guys ever discussed your own stage rigs and what you are trying to do with your own tones? I think that might prove interesting.
+sduke39 no, but we must do it :)
One of you're best videos, especially for young players who don't have experience with different kinds of amps. Can you do a video with just treble boosters and explain why they went out of fashion?
Love this show 😎
My first booster is the T&C Spark Mini. 49$ new.
Little bit of treble boost, 20 db boost with great clarity, and increased separation.
I keep it at end of chain, may get another for earlier in chain.
Hello, i love your show, and look forward for every episode. I have learned so much, thanks!
I would love for you to try the Mesa TONE-BURST, witch i find SO great!! I think it's overseen, and would like to hear how you feel about it. I use it with gain under 12:00 on my strat, on my frender bluse jr.
Hey guys thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us, sometimes I feel the videos are too long but I really appreciate it.
I currently use a multi effect tube pedal and was thinking about getting a separate boost just so that I can achieve more growl on some of the amps, for now I'm just trying to improve with a small budget.
I was also searching for pedals that can help me achieve a unique sounds, by this I mean not the common effects but something a little bit "voiced" (that's how I would call it) a little like earthquaker devices, Montreal Assembly, any recommendations?
Hey guys, love your show. Have you thought of putting in "backing tracks" with appropriate frequencies and amplitudes to simulate the pedals of the show "breaking through" ?
Loving your work guys. Can you do a video on volume? I.e. controlling your volume on stage. Either when you realize the band has got a lot louder and you can't be heard any more, or you realise you are too loud, or you just want to play loud and soft.
Do you use the guitar volume pot, which to me is more of a tone knob? Do use a volume pedal, which to me is more for swells? Do you go to the amp (if you can get past the horn section and the percussionist on a small stage) Do you rely on the sound guy? Do you grin and bear it? What are the solutions? Thanks a lot!
Andy Timmons rig rundown is how I started watching this channel lol glad he name dropped lol
