      I feel the same way about my THR10C. Great, full, rich tones with fantastic bottom end. It's my go-to amp for late night creativity and looping. There is a feeling of tube sag without it getting loud. Everytime I take it out to a friendly jam at someone's home, everyone marvels at its tone.

    The THR10 is a brilliant piece of kit and sounds absolutely phenomenal. You can use it as a simple amp, get into the nitty gritty of the editor and really do some cool things, and it takes pedals better than a lot of full powered heads. The THR5 is nice too, but the 10 gives you a great stereo field that make the effects stand out.

    • @TheDogPa
      @TheDogPa 7 лет назад +2

      I have a THR 10x and it is great with a backing track & an mp3 player in the park on batteries, but it is a joke when it comes to a real sound. At first you think wow! But then you move a few feet and wonder what the hell is wrong with the bass. Then you realize it is like a Bose stereo with serious phase issues with the bass reflex. But you think, WTF, it is fun. Put it through your reference monitors and it is much better. Then you try to hook it up to your DAW and really think...WTF? Lame ass drivers made by someone with less than 3 digits in their IQ so you end up with asio 4 all and latency and no direct, or you use the stock drivers and must playback through the THR! Bye monitors. Sounds better (check out youtube reviews) with a mic anyway. So that is a total wash...LOL. The futility of it all starts to set in. Next you start to dial in a sound like something you are used to. You realize how bad the gate is. You ditch it and use a pedal. It is so noisy you need one unless you kill the gain. Now you quickly realize the gain is useless and you hook up a decent pedal. You can ditch the gate now. If you have enough batteries and want to carry all of that you can kill in the park. But any software...even free stuff...will so blow this little toy away there is no way you'd want to record with it. But you could. You can deal with the issues. You can make a demo video and make a good sounding track. The final recording can be good. I've done it. Total F'ing PITA...and nobody tells you the truth about it because they've never used it longer than for a demo and don't know. A Zoom multi-box and a mini Marshall smokes it. As a quickie demo thing or on the porch or in the treehouse, with presets and all? Sure. I might even keep it. But in your bedroom or at your DAW you want something that works right and responds right. Finally, you'll get to open it up and move some wires around to get them to stop making noises. Google it. Some people like this thing. No wonder they don't understand a tube amp...even a little bity one...? LOL! Maybe I will sell it...and just buy a good pedal or some NOS tubes. By the way, I use a THD univalve (hi-v w/el34) into a microiverb4 and then a clean '62 Tremolux (all w/nos mullard/rca pre's & SS recto) to a G12H & V30 (sweet spot right in the middle)...all fed by a DS-1 and a metal muff...and it works better the lower it is. Smokes like a Marshal stack on steroids, and feels like one, at a whisper. A proper (even tiny if enough headroom) clean tube amp with a few proper pedals and one 12" in my face is the only bedroom thing that really works for me. You can rock out and still hear your strings directly!

    • @Stratomacaster
      @Stratomacaster 7 лет назад +3

      You should tell us how you really feel about the THR... :-)
      Not sure how you set yours up, but I have near 0 latency when recording. I don't do it often - like most folks, I use it more for a practice/jam amp for the house. I also use my monitors just fine when using it through the stock ASIO drivers. Not sure what you mean by "no direct" either. I have the direct monitoring option in the device config just like my regular A/D system (UR824) and it works fine. You might want to reconfigure your DAW to allow shared drivers and turn off exclusive mode (if your DAW supports it). If you can't get that to work, it's more of a DAW problem, not the design of the unit. You're kind of reaching there.
      And as far as any noise - yes, you can google it, but if you read more than a few sentences of any of those articles you'll see that there was a defect in a small number of power supplies (only in the original version of the unit) which was fixed shortly after and Yamaha offered to replace any units with the problem.
      Look, if you don't like the unit, or feel jipped because you bought one and didn't like it, then sell it and be on your way. Obviously from the video, you can see it works quite well - it takes pedals, sounds great, it's quiet, and does a lot for what you pay for it.

      But isn’t choosing the Fender Bassbreaker as your favourite small amp because ‘its loud enough to gig with it’ defeat the object of the title of this video? If any of the amp manufacturers had a decent marketing department, they would build more amps for the ‘bedroom’ players which I would wager make up a huge chunk of the market….not going to ‘gig with it’ so don’t need the volume!! Truth is the bedroom guitarist who is trying not to wake up the neighbours, spouse or baby is looked down upon….

    If you're a serious musician, you can't underestimate the importance of having a space where you can really open up and play, preferably any time the mood strikes.
    As a young, broke, man, I learned quickly that a lot of sacrifices had to be made to support such a space; as the main instigator and front man, I took it upon myself to sponsor such " safe spaces".I froze, sweat, took cold showers in homemade baths, risked mean streets, and went hungry, to keep them up and running; many thought I was crazy, but no one questioned my commitment.
    I see a lot of young bands trying to get by renting studios a couple times a week, while working out their respective roles quietly and privately.I've done/tried that as well. In theory, it can work, especially if there's a clear, business like focus , and a pre determined idea of where the project is going.
    Now, I don't think I really need to clarify the limitations creatively on this approach, or even point out the difference in broader mentality , but especially for a group of musicians trying to do something unique, or find a individual voice, - an absolutely chilling and deadly approach.Not to sound like that guy, but there's a good reason so much ground breaking music was born in garages and re purposed industrial spaces,- they are conducive to the creative process.Where you're not rushing, or limited by even more time constraints, as if it isn't already hard enough to find common free time ( and energy) of 3 or 4 different people.
    When I talk to bands I don't know, I always ask about where they practice and write, - almost never suprised by the results.Peace.

      You can usually tell the difference between the music of those who live it , 24/7, and those to whom it is a side job.The only mistake is thinking there will be no comprimises, and no results of those choices.Many have lived happily only for their music.

      @Zach Ball I mean with the hxstomp you have somewhat accurate recreations of those sounds and can set up a multi amp rig inside the unit. So I would just spend time going back n forth between your rig and the stomp tuning it in. Other things to have/consider are a good pair of headphones and/or a fr/fr monitor, like the headrush 8, to hear yourself with. Personally I've gone the way of a hybrid system. I use a two notes Captor x to turn my existing tube amps into headphone amps.

    Ok, I've watched the whole thing now. Nice job. A few thoughts-
    1) You should hit up the folks at Yamaha for a sales commission.
    2) The biggest revelation for me was how good the Kingsley Page sounded with the Yamaha. That's always been the concern for me. I have pedals and I like to use them but if I get a small digital amp, will it render them (the overdrive pedals at least) useless.
    3) The amplitude i-rig demo was great. I've long wanted to see that. Knowing myself though, I'd go too far down the rabbit hole of trying to find fun stuff, the Jimi Hendrix setups and all that. I wouldn't practice actual guitar playing enough, but it might still be fun. Also, I use my computer for my day job work stuff- MS Word Documents and Excel Spreadsheets and I don't want to combine those two worlds, mentally, and physically in my home.
    4) Mick is absolutely right, bassbreaker 15 over the blues jr. in a heartbeat.
    5) Dan's tele continues to be an amazing sounding guitar.

    Loved the THR segment, Dan is so right about setting it up with your normal pedals. Have you ever tried the THR10C? (the blue one) I reckon that would be right up Micks street, its got a load of classic 'blues' style amps modeled. (Twin Reverb, Matchless DC30, Blues Jr, Bluesbreaker and a Dr Z Mini Z for some slightly more pushed sounds. The delay is also analogue modeled as well.) Sounds fantastic!

    For my home recording it’s been an Orange Micro-Terror 20W with the 8” cab and a Subzero Tweed 15W combo with it’s 6.5” speaker. I love having the stereo sound. I record both with SM57s at very low volumes and use diverse pedals for drive, distortion, fuzz delay, etc... This setup has been an inspiring upgrade from the Amplitube and Amp Farm plugins which I was using for years. It just sounds SO much better. It’s awesome getting back to amps (even if small) and pedals again instead of using the plugins where the beautiful graphics never quite match the sound. I keep comparing my sound files to the old ones and I’m always pleasantly surprised at how much warmer, crunchier and downright superior everything sounds now. I also use the ART Pro MPA II 2-Channel Tube Mic Pre which just adds extra transients and warmth to everything.

    I have Amplitube 4/Mesa Boogie pack and like it for just jamming sometimes late night and in certain situations. But a couple years ago I got away from modeling and went back to amps and even sold my cab and just got a Suhr reactive load and just use impulse responses. I just record though. Don't play live but I find the real amps and pedals deal way more fun and inspiring. Awesome video guys!

    Bought the THR10 a week ago after watching this video. Can’t praise it enough, absolutely love it. Very easy to use and great sounds from such a small unit. Plugged it into the Mac and found you get a few other effects to use like a compressor and noise gate and you can choose various cabs.

      For rehearsing parts on the go GarageBand is best. You can start a backing track on your laptop and save it to the cloud and play along on an iPhone (with interface). As long as your tone doesn't require massive wha or expression pedal usage it's great to run stuff at coffee shop or wherever shoegazers reside.

      That has been my experience as well. I've tried for years to like Amplitude and it seems to work fine for many but I could never get along with it. I gave up on that and thought I'd try the Fender Mustang III v2 for lower volume / headphone playing. It was better but I think the modeling sounds much better & different through the speaker than headphones. A separate set of headphone optimized patches helps with that though.
      Then I found scuffham s-gear. Sounds great & responds like an amp. It has a standalone and vst/audiounit/aax. Search is over for silent/headphone/DAW amp plugin playing. On top of that the owner (MIke Scuffham) runs a straight up customer first company. I recommend you try the demo (14 day no-nag trial)

    Great show. I have gained so much useful, and by that I mean inspiring, information from That Pedal Show. One take away today: I play too loud at home! I have a Princeton and an old Musicmaster bass amp (12 & 10 watts), and finding a combination of amp settings and pedals has been fun, but also very...confusing at times, I guess. They sound good at louder volumes. Good clean. I have played around with different speakers in both. You guys helped to clear a path for me to get to a point of hearing a sound I want to hear using pedals, because nothing seemed to hit the mark before I started putting information from this show into practice. I was hit or miss before that. I learned to do proper setups on my guitars at home, first. That was huge. Everything past the guitar jack I think I have mostly navigated by information from your shows. I happened upon a couple Catalinbread "foundation" pedals, basically amp in a box pedals, that also really helped get there for me sound-wise. But I would have had no idea how to use those pedals with other pedals without you guys. For the past month or so I have thought, " how do I take this sound and turn it down but keep it?" And today you flipped on an attenuator! I have been looking at 18 and 20 watt Marshall-type amps, but not pulling the trigger. Thank you!!

    Excited for the attenuator episode. I would love it if you guys would do an episode on speaker cabinets! Obviously they are not pedals, but you guys explain and demonstrate so well how to get different sounds. Many of us do not have access to try lots of different types of cabinets and really understand the differences in sound. I would be so interested to see/hear a 2x10 compared to 1x12, 1x15 compared to 2x12, compared to 4x12 , closed back vs open back et. . I am learning a lot about tone from your show and the speaker cabinets can be such an important part. There are some demonstrations online, but not to the quality of your show.

    I find I do so much in-the-box that I rarely record an amp anymore.
    I started messing with computer music waaay back in the 80s. Back when the IBM PC still only had a speaker I was using a Commodore Amiga to do multichannel stereo 8 bit audio sequencing. I've watched software program after program come along to be a 'guitar amp' or effects boxes and they were always tinny and weak but an obvious progression.
    These days though it is stunning what you can achieve with a bit of software. I've got tones for all my favourite artists that I can re-create with pedals or right in the DAW. Impulse responses take it to another level. As the prices drop and the software improves it is only going to get easier for people to make music. Fantastic!

  • @JacarandaMusic
    @JacarandaMusic 7 лет назад +8

    Given you had the Victory Duchess tucked away behind I was hoping you'd find a minute to discuss whether the low power modes on such amps have a negative effect on the tone; is it (more or less) the same but softer or does the reduction weaken the tone, and either way, does it warrant EQ as was mentioned re the Fryette?

  • @90sGuitarCovers
    @90sGuitarCovers 7 лет назад +7

    You guys should try sticking a clean boost in a tube amp inside the effects loop and set it to a very mild gain. I do this and find it opens up the amp at low volumes and drives the power tubes just enough to clean up some pre amp fizz. I do this with a mini spark boost or even an EP boost set to about 9oclock and it works well. It can even help clean up fuzz on an orange which are notoriously fuzzy at under half volume
    Attenuation is probably much better but this is a cheap option for people that already have a clean boost.

    For decades I've done a lot of my home practicing acoustically... as in solid body electric guitar not plugged into anything at all. The dynamics are the best you'll ever get, and I think its done amazing things for my picking technique. The only downside is that you can get lazy with muting of unwanted strings if you don't practice cranked up occasionally... you've got to be aware that when you plug in at high volume you are gonna hear strings ringing that you wouldn't notice when playing acoustically.

    I never played so much guitar as now that I have got a THR for home use. What ever way you use for get a decent sound at home is the key for getting better at guitar. I don't have an attenuator and I don't plan to get one , surely not for home use. The THR sounds so much better at home than any valve amp , simply fantastic. The reverb quality and the stereo speakers set can make you feel inspired also at a pretty low volume . A personal suggestion is to place it right in front of you, couple of feet away and to tilt it a bit and make it shoot directly at your face, that can give a false volume impression and maximizes the reverb stereo image.

    I've been limited to low-volume playing for a very long time and the simplicity of that Yamaha amp appeals to me; fiddling with a computer may give more variety but it's an added layer of cost, complication, and cables. Bravo for covering this subject and please consider doing it repeatedly since most players aren't able to crank up their sound (I'm guessing.)

  • @jimmythefish
    @jimmythefish 7 лет назад

    Thanks guys, this is great. I mentioned on another thread (which Mick was kind enough to respond to) that I play a tele at home through a THR 10c. I love it - it feels like an amp, and responds dynamically like a tube amp would. It's a perfect solution for me at home, and running on batteries and being an MP3 player we use it as a great portable MP3 player. It's a fantastic little thing - it even has an acoustic amp setting that I run my D28 through sometimes. Amazing.
    So, having had it for 6 months or so I have started experimenting with a few pedals. I bought a TC Electronic Flashback delay, which I also love, and not surprisingly which works well through the amp. While the amp does have a tape delay, there are so many more options with the TC. This also goes with a reverb pedal - I have considered picking up a reverb pedal even as the amp has a really nice set of reverbs. I also recently bought a TC Mojomojo overdrive to experiment with drive over top, as well as a Big Muff nano. I can say that the drive and fuzz also works well into the amp - it allows you to get different sounds through it and go beyond what the amp provides. It also reminds me to play dynamically, using the volume knob on the guitar to control breakup sounds.
    The only issues I've had with the amp is the absence of an effects loop and the limitations of running all the pedals off the front, and the rather arbitrary limitation of the amp, tube and cabinet models available on each iteration of the model. It would be nice to have access to all the amp, tube, cabinet simulations and all the possible effects on one unit. I know that there are many people who wouldn't mind a happy medium inbetween the 10 and the full sized 100 with the features of the 100. There's certainly room on the amp cabinet for it, and the whole thing has a very analog vibe about it - plugging into the computer moves away from the feel they're trying to create with it, and I'm certainly not running the computer when I take it to a friend's place to play. I'd certainly pay more for more features on the cab.
    My solution for not having an effects loop will probably be to get the complimentary THR10 to add to my 10c, as it's about the same price as a pricier pedal. I'll add an A/B switcher and have a stereo rig if I want it, with the ability to loop one sound through one and then play overtop of the other with a different sound. Sophisticated wanking! There's the added benefit of having someone over and they can just plug straight in to the second amp and not have to lug their own gear over. This is how I justify things!
    Above all it has allowed me to play with great tone and flexibility at home, and be inspired by what I'm playing.

    What about amps like the Boss Katana 50w that can be turned down to 0.5w. This would allow you to take the Amp out for band practice/gigging and also have the FX loop to be able to set up more like you would do if gigging. I know it doesn't have the advantage of being on a shelf to appease your significant other but is cheaper than the Yamaha THR10 yet more versatile. Can also be used with an Acoustic too.
    Also there is the Boss JS-10 that offers the GT100 effects, ability to plug in a mic/2nd Guitar and a LOT of backing tracks built in. Full range speakers and decent volume for the same price - less of an 'Amp' though. I still think this has a lot of functionality for the bedroom player to practice with - even has a tuner and can slow down tracks to hear and practice over. I think its a fantastic option for the bedroom player. I find it gets tedious practising with just a guitar and amp so having all those backing tracks etc really helps - its also much nicer to practice timings with a backing track compared to an annoying metronome.

    • @nobrakes3765
      @nobrakes3765 4 года назад

      @Giant Killer So sir, it has a backlight that makes it look tube but is't totally digital. The tones are unbeatable for a digital amp and the knobs (no screens and buttons) make it play like a real amp. It's a bit more than other digital amps but... you won't return it! PS: it can run off batteries, too!

      Brett Hussey The MVP23 works very well for home playing and I probably play quieter than most, 70 - 75 dB.

    The sound coming out of that tele never ceases to amaze.
    Nerd mode on: adding 10db roughly equates to doubling the loudness so in the section where you wound up from 80ish to 100ish things got 4x louder than where you started from.
    Notes to self. Might have to buy Yamaha THR5 for offspring. Might have to buy telecaster. Must stop using 50W head and Fender 4x12 for daily twiddling.

    I tell people all the time that my THR is the best guitar related purchase I've ever made. Their marketing is spot on. It makes practicing electric guitar so easy and fun.

    • @joebowles06
      @joebowles06 5 лет назад

      @Stig Brautaset an effects loop would've been nice. I use my THR with my looper pedal all the time, and the only gripe I have is that the built in effects apply to the whole loop if you choose to use them. You can't just overdub a riff with some chorus ontop of your loop, unless you want the whole loop to have chorus. It's really not a huge deal. It's a practice amp, not a gigging amp.

      I tried a noise gate before and it killed my sound, especially on the clean channel. There was no sustain. I can take a bit of hiss, just not a loss of sustain. The main noise I find hard to tame is the squealy high-pitched feedback. I end up rolling off the treble to tame it, but sometimes I have to roll it off more than I would like.

    When are you guys going to start actually reviewing gear? I'd love to see you do a whole video on just one pedal or a line of pedals, especially some of the more far out stuff that Moog do (Moogerfoogers and the like).
    EDIT: Similar to the AB comparisons you do. I just wanna see you do some Moog stuff, they really have their heads screwed on right, they're definitely making some of the best pedals available at the mo. The MoogerFooger Cluster Flux is a godsend, and the MoogerFooger delay is really cool too.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 лет назад +6

      +Linus Martin We're not a review channel. Bloody waste of time (Mick here). For example: I can't stand most super posh boutique guitars and I struggle to be inspired to play them. I blimmin love Gretsches and Danelectros and knackered old Fenders that barely stay in tune and we're basically thrown together. I get music from those. And then other people are the exact opposite. Neither one of us is right - it's just all personal preference.
      TPS is about celebrating that - helping people understand stuff that they might want to ask their own questions about, rather than us providing some answers.
      Moog. Yes, we should try some. Synths are my kryptonite so the brand has never appealed. Again, just an opinion. Everyone says they're awesome!

    • @loubest3935
      @loubest3935 7 лет назад

      I didn't so much mean reviewing every new pedal that comes out, I just thought it would be cool to hear about some pedals you really like in more depth, and why they're better than similar pedals on the market. And if you've never tried the Moog MoogerFooger Cluster Flux, you're seriously missing out. I got one a few months ago and haven't been able to turn it off since.
      And thanks for replying!

      That Pedal Show Mick, you should definitely look at their pedals :o the cluster flux is amazing, although probably not really your thing i guess, although it can be tamed to do a basic chorus. but that isn't really it's strength :)

    A DRRI is almost always the answer. Loud enough for small clubs; At home, with the volume just cracked is TV volume, gorgeous and clean or goosed with tube screamer or something still sounds awesome. I also have a little AC4 which is also a killer sounding amp but the bigger box and speaker make the DR is no comparison, sounds like a proper amp.

    So I was saving for years to finally get a valve amp, I don't have a band right now, and I love Vox tone, so AC30 was the way to go. Since you need volume to get the sound, I was looking about all the different options AC4's with 10", 12", AC10's, AC15's etc. I wanted an amp to train me in dynamics, also looked for Fender's, etc. That little Yamaha is making me think it twice, it sounds awesome! For gigs I own a Marshall MG250DFX, which everyone says its crap, but it actually takes pedals very well and I like when cranked up. I need to own a barn in the fields, then I'll own a couple oc AC30's. Meanwhile I guess I'll rather spend my money on that small amp.

    An enthusiastic second on the Power Station. I use mine to quiet down a Hiwatt, boost up a Champ & Vibro Champ and also match impedances between amps & cabs that otherwise wouldn't play well with each other. It sounds great in all these applications. Terrific piece of gear.

  • @jakestewartmusic
    @jakestewartmusic 6 лет назад

    I bought a 1968 Vibro Champ from Emerald City Guitars on my last tour through Seattle - what a great home/lessons amp. It has two inputs and it's so lightweight that I take it as my green room warm up amp, songwriting on the bus, sitting in on lead guitar with acoustic singer songwriters, travel amp for lessons, studio amp, and get a great tone at reasonable volumes at home. Buy a little Champ and use pedals if you need drive! Hard to go wrong. When the spouse/family/neighbors are out, crank that little guy up and it's a pretty glorious noise without peeling the paint off of the walls.

    Man, I'm getting worried about this "bedroom volume" thing. It seems that everybody is giving up on the legacy of the mighty electric guitar and starting to turn it down. Where's the rock? Why are guitarists becoming huge pussies afraid of their girlfriends and the old lady next door? Jesus, be a man or a woman and turn it up. The only excuse for turning your guitar down is if you suck at it. You gotta have volume to feel the rock, man. Let's stop this "bedroom volume" nonsense. Either turn it up or turn it off.

    Quite enjoyed this video. One thing that I think escapes many guitarists is the differences in how the human ear perceives frequencies or in effect "loudness" at various SPLs. This is why a tool such as the Power Station is so useful, because adjustments can be made that give the aural satisfaction we're looking for since we're used to full on amps and the low volume simply isn't doing it for us. Old hi-fi amps and receivers sometimes had a "loudness" switch for this effect. Valves, transformers, and speakers all get a bit magical when working hard...yes that's true... but also how your ears are perceiving sound is quite relative to SPL.
