  • A handful of the best treble boosters into a cranked vintage Vox AC30! Plus tips on cleaner amps too
    Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
    Welcome to the show! In this episode Dan and I crank our way through some of the very best treble booster pedals available… into a proper loud-and-driving vintage AC30.
    Now we appreciate a couple of things at this point. First up, treble boosters really aren’t for everyone, but we ask you to bear with us. As we discover - or at least as I discover because Dan already knows it - it’s really all about how you use them. And we can all use them.
    Which brings us to the second point: what if you don’t have a cranked vintage AC30? Well fear ye not because we move on to demonstrating what happens when you use a cleaner amp. A common-or-garden overdrive pedal could be your best friend here.
    Right, ready? Enjoy the video!

    Slight correction to Your Guitarist timeline…. Rory Gallagher was the one who revealed how he got his sound to a star struck Brian May… So it was Rory first & then Brian who followed after RE: adoption of a treble booster. Great show btw. 👍👍👍

    Good news everyone. The western electric tube plant in Georgia which is the old Mullard plant has stated that they will begin manufacturing guitar amp tubes very soon. They have all the old Mullard tooling so will cut time off if the delay. Also the numbers that they will be manufacturing will ensure that they will not come at a premium cost. Happy days. Rory used a treble booster before Brian. I watched an interview video of Brian May and he talked about how as a young man that he a friend were huge fans of Rory Gallagher. They would go to his shows at small venues. A couple of times he worked up the nerve to talk with Rory. Rory turned out to be such a friendly and wonderful guy quite willing to answer any questions these two young, aspiring musicians had. They asked Rory where he got his tone from and he told them that all you need are two things. First, a Vox AC30 amp. And second, a Range Master Treble Booster. So Rory came before Brian. They were friends for a very long time.

    Some great moments in the video (of so many): Dan looking sad and loving when the AC30 gets turned off (47:55), both ducking from the "very focussed midrange shotgun" when the BassBreakerManThing gets some schwang (49:54), and Mick's reaction to the blues tone he got with the ODR-1, Collider and the Texas Twang (1:00:05). Thanks for so much detail and bringing us the knowledge, leg-ends!

    Ahhhhh YESSS! The ultimate for those of us who know pedal. A range master with an AC30 or jtm45 is just the most magical tone. Really shines with an ef86 type vox circuit. I also love it as my boost for neck pickups on Les Pauls, p90 or PAF. Stacks so well with a fuzz face circuit too. Another awesome episode gents! Wouldn’t want to start my Saturday any other way than with TPS!

That AC30 boosted makes every hair on my body stand up! Oh, hey Mick, I just got tickets to see Doyle II and the Arc Angels in my hometown (New Braunfels TX) at the oldest dance hall in Texas,Gruene Hall! The band sets up on the dance floor right in front of you. It should be amazing. And it looks like we may get new music from them soon! Oh and I'm seeing David Grissom this coming g mo day at the Saxo Pub in Austin, he plays every Tuesday that he is available. Cheers chaps from Texas! When Mick said "that is an unfortunate name" I said yes, after trying to boost my amp I realized what I need is a clean boost with a low freq cut for more gain that still has string to string definition, and that seems to be the case with treble boosters.

    I don’t think neither Jimmy Page or Jeff Beck are famous for using a treble booster, I think they were famous for using a Tone Bender. Correct if I’m wrong. Also fun fact: Brian May got his sound from Rory Gallagher after he saw a concert by Rory Gallagher and he really like the tone, so he stayed after the show and asked him about how he gets his sound and he told that he plugs a treble booster into an AC 30. You can find the clip online of Brian May talking about this.

    Dan at the start was me as a teenager hearing Malcolm and Angus for the first time. I confess I'm not capable of that much energy and passion now, despite being significantly younger than Dan. But watching TPS has definitely kept the joy of those "come onnnn!!!!" guitar sounds alive for me in recent years. Thanks lads. You've also inspired keeping up my overdraft from pedal purchases, but it's an occupational hazard.

    I fell into treble boosters by accident. Buddy’s band was playing, and he needed someone to run sound. During soundcheck, he wanted me to play his rig while he checked out my mix. He was running a DIY one knob treble booster and it sounded awesome. I love them, I just have trouble applying them to my rigs.

    Mick…. I’m a bit of an expert on treble boosters and who used them first. It was Rory Gallagher then Brian May. Brian asked Rory how he got that sound. So… great show as always. What a glorious thing the treble booster ac30 thing is and congratulations on discovering the ‘59 tweed sound. Your going to want the 4x10 as well because… because. And no the super has no correlation to it. I have a problem. I think you missed out a really big treble booster use case as evidenced by the Thorpy Veteran and AnalogMan Sun Lion. Treble Booster taming the bottom end of your favourite fuzz face when pushed to the point it gets flubby and you get lost in the mix. I reckon this combo perhaps has been in use for a long time.

    So fun you use J Mascis as an example of loud guitar sound; I saw them in 2017 and ended up RIGHT IN FRONT OF J, except he had a Hiwatt stack instead of an Orange. It was so loud that my ears weren’t just ringing but were sore FOR DAYS. But it was the best guitar tone I ever heard.
    Anyway, great episode and makes me question if I should run my VC35 with a bit more gain and get a treble booster…

    Makes me wonder how I ever did without one for years!!! I use the Walrus Emissary (Parallel Boost) which Mick would like (I think). Can independently set mid and high frequencies and can switch between different mid level settings. I use for lead boost into cranked Orange amp - so sweet indeed! Great show lads (loved the Uno too!!!)

    Great show as always! Some really great sounds throughout. Would have been interesting to hear what you guys thought either about each pedal or just some highlights. I've never really given any serious time to a treble booster but I might have to give that a go since I've been into heavier sounds lately. The way that it just lifted in this show was really nice.

    Bless those sound engineers. I play in an acoustic duo and I remember an open mic we did at a pub and the SE contrived to make us sound terrible, well more than usual. Once we started he decided to add a long delay echo to my guitar for some reason. Then he got bored and spontaneously and uninvited decided to join in with us half through a song,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, on drums.

    Glorious tones from both of you!! I love treble boosters too! I thought that Eric Clapton might have used a treble booster or some sort of pedal on John Mayall and the Blues Breakers recording called “The Beano” album. Plus He used a Les Paul and Marshall 2/12 Combo Amplifiers. The sound of the guitar on that Beano album changed the sound of rock and roll forever. That’s an awesome new Les Paul and you sound excellent on it Mick! Dan always sounds awesome on his tele and Vox!

    What a glorious sound! I wish I could find a tele that I love as half much as Dan. I always thought that they look so cool, but never could get a sound I love. I tend to always gravitate back to my strat.

      try building your own warmoth tele, that's my next project. You can specify whatever neck construction, fingerboard radius, inlays. View body blanks by wood and weight or have your own made. I figure it's a good way to learn proper guitar finishing. The thought of a custom build Tele or strat that I can finish myself with nitro lacquer like Gibsons is enticing!

    • @igordemoraeslenzi
      @igordemoraeslenzi 2 года назад +1

      @@t3hgir I’m not us based, so partcasters tend to get expensive with scarce parts on the market. My strat is almost like that. I have a road worn mex 60s strat with Emerson custom electronics and lollar pickups. Took me some time to assembly it, but when I finally did it, it was amazing. Really like that guitar.
      I had some Teles over the time, and really like the looks of a lake placid blue that I had at one point. But the neck wasn’t quite right and the never had a pickup that I really liked (didn’t tried many as well - maybe that was the problem).

    I recently bought Pepers' Pedals Dirty Tree, which is very similar to Fortin 33 - essentially a pedal made for boosting high gain amps into modern metal tones. I was checking out the EQ curve and it is pretty much a treble booster combined with the bass cut metal players love for tightening a high gain amp. Absolutely love it for the metal stuff, seeing this video I should probably try it out for more classic rock tones as well! Would also be interesting to check out a more classic treble booster into something like 5150 or SLO100 to see how it works for those metal tones.

    Oh yes! Love it, love the show, and love treble boosters!
    Ideally, every boost pedal would have a treble booster mode. Spectacularly useful even for the “non rock” thing, to sculpt away the mud of your old school amps, if, like me, you love champs at low volume.

    Your timing is almost impeccable. I just picked up a Catalinbread Naga Viper Treble boost, which (allegedly) does the Dallas Arbiter thing. I'm absolutely loving it going into some low-mid edge-of-breakup tones! I blame Pete Thorn's treble booster video from a couple years ago!

    • @alexlewis8468
      @alexlewis8468 2 года назад

      Very interested in the Naga Viper into channel 1 of my Kraken on lowish gain- what you running yours into?

    • @markferguson3745
      @markferguson3745 2 года назад +1

      I've tried many, and though I usually dig Catalinbread, the Naga just dosen't capture the lower gain and compression, - being Silicon, - of the Germanium units.It's also been cleaned up, and can be used as a mid boost, as well.IMO, a good pedal IF you play mostly harder, higher gain stuff, but something like the EQD Bows is more like the real deal.Greer also make several vintage types, that aren't stupid expensive,- yet.
      I think the key is guitar volume knob control sensitivity, and what the baseline of the gain begins as.If you're interested in the concept, I'd start trolling for one of the better used units before they get even more expensive.A few years from now, you won't be able to buy one for under $500.

    I think the Catilinbread Skewer sounded great, but all sounded awesome.. I'm using QSC speakers for monitors, this stuff is picky enough. Serious cork sniffing. But it must be done. Or build your own- it's a simple sensitive transistor circuit - a great first project. They all sound dif. But the one you build is certainly yours. An endearing testament to tone. So many kits, versions and direction.

    I am sure you guys think about it every day, but isn't amazing how glorious things sound when expensive guitars hit a bunch of expensive pedals into expensive amps? And not to mention killer guitar players. The last few minutes of the video sounded amazing (as did the rest of it). My wife was in the other room and was like "what is going on in here." Great video as always.

    Hey guys - treble boosters for the win! Absolutely love to kick an overdriving amp with one (I got a Cornish Tx83, Mad Professor Ruby Red, Catalinbread Naga Viper and an Analogman Beano. The MP is on my band board). For the volume - have you maybe considered putting a Plexi Glas shield between the amps and you? That takes a lot of the hurting volume away. Or maybe even taking the amp into another room and mic‘ing it there? My ears start ringing when I see 100+ dB on that dB meter :-) thanks for the great show!
