I totally agree with Sam about the importance of determination in a founder. It's so easy to give up when things go wrong, but it takes true grit to keep pushing forward and find a way to overcome the challenges. And I think it's really cool that YC is looking for founders who have that quality, rather than just focusing on the idea or the network. As for independent thought, I think that's also really important. It can be tough to break out of the mold and think for yourself, especially when there are so many social pressures pushing you in certain directions. But I think it's important for entrepreneurs to be able to see things in a different way and come up with innovative ideas that nobody else has thought of. Overall, I think these are some great insights into what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur, and I'm excited to see what kind of companies YC will fund in the future
Just a reminder that even the smartest minds can ask thoughtless questions, derailing the entire convo & thus changing the trajectory of what could have been the most informative talks. I understand how important politics is, but I’d rather hear how to deliver ground breaking tech in a competitive space. Really didn’t extract the true value out of Sam.
You should do this exact same talk (same questions) with Altman, in 2022, after 2 years of Covid, after 1 year of Jan 06 Capitol attack and after 1 year of Joe Biden...some of his 2017 answers are prescient (UBI) and others are off-base or not discussed at all (global warming).
I learn something every time I listen to Sam. He is razor-sharp. But still the great Sam got Bitcoin wrong. It was a disastrous store of value, anything but digital gold.
33:00 what government regulations? if anything more regulations are needed: huge companies are buying up all the housing. If they mean removing NIMBY regulations then yeah that should be removed

Sam Altman is really very intelligent, new technologies gave him a chance, I believe that Americans who have studied tirelessly are the smartest in the world and the most handsome too, haha
Thank You Sam and teams for Chat GPT4. Thank you Google for Bard. It is a blast. Thank you Microsoft. Yours is very thorough, but, it appears to be emotional and self-protective and very secretive. We shall see😁.

I like Sam but he won't be so popular when his comments about Silicon Valley reach the public. But....he is right in his assessment of SV. It's days are numbered!!
I don't quite get the point on diversity, what would be the benefit of choosing employers based on their gender and skin colour? I don't understand how that is important or relevant? Would you not hire based on ability or track record? Maybe someone from USA could fill me in. Thanks!
well, it's because we have a lot of insincere people who are really concerned about what others think of them, so they've all competitively circle-jerked each other into seeing your allegiance to these arbitrary set of values as some form of currency. so you'll see a lot us feigning outrage at some conjured injustice that we don't really care about, or at times we'll seem to be inanely obsessed with the topic. you notice they don't really seem to care about diversity of thought so much, but making sure we've collected all the different skintones and genital types is SUPER important.
@@onseayu creating quotas for traditionally under represented minorities will help encourage them to join the field more. This allows the pool of talent that companies can hire from larger. I think that's demis hassabis
Slowly? :P
Who knew we will be looking back at time and watch this video? Phenomenal session.
If google had started invested in him at the time...
He joined OpenAi later. So technically he was not a cofounder
sam is so amazing, just the right person to lead it, so smart, compassionate, sharp and ambitious
Really great job interviewing, Jorge!
Sam Altman is soon becoming a legend

Thank you for making this video and series. It is particularly informative.
Adore you Sam!
Highly valuable content and insights, thanks Sam! ❤️
JOOLEAN get a life. there are zero insights here. he's pathetic.
Love Sam! Great talk. Turning down most (free) partnership proposals - 99.999% secret to sustaining and eliminating time waste/frustration.
Sam Altman is the Man. Big Brained. 🤖🖤💚📈🇺🇸
Sam Altman is one smart dude
Sam Altman is one of the nicest guy i have heard speak on RUclips
Quite interesting! And considering that this was 6 years ago, even more so! Such profound and current reflections from Altman back then.
Interesting. Thanks for the RUclips recommend engine.
Wow, he was even right about nuclear fusion, it happened 5 years later
Great interview questions and really good answers. Nice job.
Sam Altman is the God of AI...

He should run for president in the US period
You the best sam
He mentions the UBI experiment was 8 months into a 5 year project… it’s been 4 years since this was uploaded 🤨
Wow. Retro Sam!
This is really helpful. Thanks. 🙏🏻
Sam Altman = the nicest guy in Silicon Valley
Evan, go away. you don't know him. he's ruthless.
Rubbish. If you're an investor & entrepreneur...you need to be. Otherwise, you'll get eaten alive by others.
So true!
Hell nah
LMAO (after Open AI blew up)
That time who knows he will become CEO of Open AI and Compete with Google 😂
Wasn't he ceo of openai by that time
I learn something every time I listen to Sam. He is razor-sharp. But still the great Sam got Bitcoin wrong. It was a disastrous store of value, anything but digital gold.
Thank you
Sam looks like Richard Hendricks from Silicon Valley
He talks a bit like him too, when he pauses, use fillers, and other verbal ticks
It is interesting how now he is fighting against google now
I dont think so
He is just creating creating base for the AI.
Its just beginning
He was doing open source before OPenAI..Seems to be using the successfully
