  • Whether you're just playing minecraft, super smash brothering or just learning some new Japanese words, handheld consoles still rule the roost in Japan for hardcore/casual gaming. Of course, mobile phone/tablet gaming is growing at an incredible rate, but these two slim, speedy, super capable handhelds are home to some of the best portable gaming experiences you can have today. And sometimes it's educational!
    Let's have a brief look at both and feel free to discuss your preferences in the comments section :)

      ***** lol not everyone has the money to buy it just after release I waited 2 years from now (I got interested in nintendo around that time) to earn enough (because there were some times I had to pay for things from my savings) and new nintendo 3ds got released. I wanted to buy 3ds xl but decided to buy new nintendo 3ds. I hope that I won't regret not having normal xl though... 😐

      I bought a 2ds and about 3 months later they released the new 3ds. No regrets though, cause I still got to play Pokemon, but I'd rather have the new one.
      Now I'm stuck between vita and new 3ds😞. I'd take the 3ds because I want it, but they say that vita is going to stop selling at the end of this year.

    In short:
    Vita = Quantity / 3DS = Quality
    Vita = Power / 3DS = Convenience
    Vita = Visual Novels / 3DS = Nintendo games
    I'd say get both so you can experience a wider range of games, but if I have to pick, the 3DS is the one for me... That has mostly to do with Nintendo games, I can't live without Mario and Zelda...

      I'd say Vita = quality and 3ds = quantity. There's a really small section of games in retail stores for vita, but like a whole rack for 3ds.

      Battery? Oh battery, I forgot about there even being a battery, since I always play with a charger. I think playing with handhelds outside is really, awkward anyway... Especially if you're over 17 '~'...

    I'm an owner of both a PS Vita and currently a 3DS XL (New 3DS tomorrow though \o/). I'm a fan of both. Why? Exclusives. I've loved Nintendo for years and I keep buying the new handhelds for Pokémon, Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart and so on. Vita, however, is a much more impressive device. I use it for my anime/otaku games. Senran Kagura, Akiba's Trip, Persona 4, Sword Art Online. It's hard to find time for both but it's possible ;D

      Definitely jealous of your new purchase. I do prefer comparisons which focus on the positive and plain reasons. For Handheld Gaming, it should not be look at as the PS-Vita OR the 3DS, but first one and next the other. Financially, I advise the PS-Vita with PS+ and a nice size Memory Card. Limit major game purchases to allow purchase of the 3DS before the Nintendo backlog grows too large.

      I can't stand any more Mario, zelda and pokemon tbh. These are the only franchises Nintendo care about, they keep pumping out so many games it fatigues the audience
      their other franchises are neglected. Wayforward released shantae for different platforms cause Nintendo forgot about shantae. Rare went under, and was saved when bought by Microsoft, cause Nintendo simply forgot about Rare, after they carried the N64

    I got my N3DS today and I'm made up with it, I had my doubts about the C-Stick but I was amazed at how well it functioned in Majora's Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4. I'm really looking forward to Xenoblade Chronicles too, I missed out on playing the Wii version so this is a second chance for me.
    I gave the Vita a chance last year but I was unimpressed with the games and ended up selling it. One of my main problems with the Vita was the back touch pad, what was Sony thinking with that? I bought a wide range of games for it but I guess end of the day it wasn't my kind of system.

    Man N3DS vs Vita is DS vs PSP all over again. Both are great but they obviously don't have the same game library. I have both and I would suggest getting the one with your favorite game genre available. Either way you won't have the time to get bored.

    I recommend the PS Vita over the 3DS series because the PS Vita does not have that many hardware revisions, you can set the time and date fast and easy on it, no different memory card sizes and no friend codes. Nintendo likes to revise their 3DS models A LOT, which makes Nintendo fans (Including myself) waste a lot of money on newer models of the 3DS, which is annoying. Plus, after you buy a brand new 3DS model of your choice, you have to put up with having a different friend code, setting the time and date manually and different SD memory card sizes, which gets really annoying. Nintendo really needs to stop being a few generations behind and start being a few generations ahead. In other words, Nintendo cannot think of any good ideas, so instead, they like to make handhelds by recycling the same Nintendo DS mold over and over again. And one more thing: no matter what model of the 3DS you have, the left analog stick breaks easily because the left stick is not very sturdy.

    I'm glad I don't have to tear my hair to decide as I own both. Both are excellent consoles in their own right with tons of exclusive content. I think a Japanese game fan will not regret owning both consoles though the one thing I must say is that I'm glad I can import games for the Vita and not have to wait for localization announcements or get another console to play those games. I wish the 3DS would revert back to it's region free state when it was the DS. Had so much fun playing niche and interesting import titles.

    Well technically speaking, for a non-japanese speaker, a N3DS would be better as it has better localization with more games translated. While for japanese speakers, the Vita is better, since you aren't restricted to english only games. Sony has a history of having good unlocalized video games since the PSP.

    • @AnTran147
      @AnTran147 9 лет назад +2

      Except quite a lot of Vita games have been getting localized, so 3DS getting more localized games isn't a good argument.
      In fact, Vita is most versatile for western gamers as they have plenty of localized games to choose from PLUS a selection of Japanese games. 3DS has more Japan-only games than people care to realize and because of the region-lock it'll be impossible to play them without buying another system (part of Nintendo's strategy).

    • @chatnoire89
      @chatnoire89 9 лет назад +1

      Access wise Vita wins because of region lock free. But 3DS has some of the best titles so it really boils down to what the person is interested in playing.
      And I'm surprised Nihongo Gamer didn't point out that Vita games are more "boyish" while 3DS games are more "girlish/kid-oriented". It doesn't apply to all titles though, just the majority of them.

    • @NihongoGamer
      @NihongoGamer  9 лет назад +2

      chatnoire89 Vita certainly was more "boyish" for a while, but Sony is clearly hoping to appeal to the female market as well with the sudden release of many otome visual novels and more varied colour options. Still, it has a long way to go ;)

  • @commanderally8510
    @commanderally8510 9 лет назад +1

    I own both of these consoles, I just picked up a New 3DS XL about a month ago, and I have had my PS Vita for about a year and a half now. To this day, I cannot figure out which one is better. To me, there is no "better", they both have different categories of gaming. The PS Vita console has a lot of T and M rated games, however Playstation does manage to get a grip on both adults and children. Where the Nintendo New 3DS XL has games for younger groups, and classics from older days, which is why both children and adults like Nintendo as well. So if your looking for fantastic graphics, serious gameplay, a lot of action, humor, and long lasting games, I would go with the vita. If your looking for younger aged games, group friendly games, multiplayer games, reading, and classic games, I would go with the 3DS.

    I keep hearing people say you will regret getting a Vita, but no one ever says why people will regret it. I can think of allot of reasons why a 3DS would be a regret if purchased and only one regret if you bought the Vita, which would go away after playing it. The one regret with the Vita which goes away fast after playing it is the price, but i mean you get what you pay for. For example I've seen a 3DS screen and its not pretty to look at. Now graphics dont define a system, the games do, and in all cases the Vita is the definitive version of the game. It looks better and sounds better on the vita, the Vita also has Bluetooth, so now you can use Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker, and it has two analog sticks out of the box. Just to name a few games, just the ones I have on my Vita, Toukiden, Sword Art Online, Freedom Wars, YS: Memories Of Celceta, Tales Of Hearts R, God Of War Collection, Muramasa Rebirth, Silent Hill: Book Of Memories, Resident Evil for Vita and 1 2 and 3, Dungeoun Hunter Alliance, Dragon's Crown, Hyperdimension U, Senran Kagura, Odin Sphere Leifhrasir, Ragnarok Odyssey, Ratchet and clank full frontal assault, Ninja gaiden Plus, Sumioni Demon Arts, Soul Sacrifice, Sly Cooper Thieves in time, Dynasty Warriors, Persona 4 Golden, Final Fantasy HD Remastered and all of the old ones too, Child of Light, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, Assassins Creed Liberation, Shovel Knight, Minecraft, Limbo, Arkham Orgins Blackgate, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection,Uncharted Golden Abyss, Borderlands 2, Resistance Burning Skies, Killzone Mercenary, Unit 13, Sine Mora, Castlevania, Strangers Wrath HD, Super Stardust Delta, Need for speed most wanted, Sonic Transformed, Urban Trial FreeStyle, Wipeout 2048, The Con, Mega man, WWE SmackDown VS Raw, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat, Playstation All Stars, Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, Supremacy MMA Unresrticted, Xenogears, Tomba Thats just what I have on my Vita theres more games than that, like Ray man, theres like three of those games for Vita and more for the PSP, theres Miami Vice, Dangan Ronpa and more games. Honestly I dont see anything the Vita is lacking game wise control wise or anything.

    I have both. I have a PS Vita Slim, N3DS LL from Japan and a 3DS from US. Both are great systems if you are looking specifically to improve your Japanese. I agree with a lot of the comments below though regarding the Vita having weak support outside of Japan. If you don't plan on playing any Japanese games, I'd have a hard time trying to sell someone on the Vita. I've been studying Japanese seriously for about a year now and so far the Japanese games I've played through include FFX on the Vita, God Eater 2 on the Vita (was easily the most difficult), Youkai Watch 2 on the 3DS, うた組み575 on the Vita and Tales of Hearts R on the Vita. I'm planning to try and tackle either Persona 4 or Zelda 神々のトライフォース2 next. The goal is to eventually play 英雄伝説 閃の軌跡 :) 頑張ります!いつもビデオを作ってくれてありがとうございます :)

    Thank you very much for posting a positive and informative discussion of the current generation of hand held consoles. The one thing which also could influence the purchase of the system is the Game Cards & Memory Cards.
    .:.
    Perhaps an add on Video discussing the cards used by each system at the high level this video does for the Console. The nitty-gritty details can be included in the description. Below are suggestion for what should be covered in the video and under the "Show More" area.
    .:.
    Each systems retail games are no longer released on Game Cartridges or Discs but dedicated Game Cards. Include information on each system's Game Cards' physical & logical size; ease of swapping and benefits. A benefit (for Sony) example is how PS-Vita Game Cards have increased encryption to limit pirating. The 3DS uses standard MicroSD Cards while PS-Vita is a Sony proprietary memory card. Changing the new 3DS requires removing a screw, while the PS-Vita must be completely shut down. PS-Vita Cards allow DLC and updates to be stored on the Game Card is space is available.
    .:.
    As for Memory Cards, discuss: physical size; speed; available capacity (GB); average # of games per GB; average Cost/GB (Retail Price & Current Cost); etc. MicroSD cards are much cheaper per GB than PS-Vita, so limit arguments on quality price Sony MicroSD Class 10. I have never seen test showing the PS-Vita Memory Card beating the Class 10's speed.
    .:.
    Finally, it may help to show the holders available for each systems Game & Memory Cards. New buyers should know how cases are needed due to the tiny size of the Cards.
    .:..:.

    As Region Freedom goes; it is not official but there is numerous ways to boot a homebrew stack on 3DS even current 10.5 that has a region free loader for cartridges. Only few games have problems actually running on out of region console. This does not even fall under modding since it boils down to just booting a homebrew channel that is in no way actually installed on the console or rely on CFW, and as of currently still can run it with just browser as your first entry point. HANS that is part of the homebrew pack also can load a game in Japanese if it has it in US or EUR release, like Smash. These are though homebrew things and yes, Vita officially just does the same without any homebrew.

      +QuangTran27 I understand that I am fucking late, but he means that just because you're Asian doesn't justify anything, even though what you said wasn't racist. There are plenty of different types of Asian, as you know, and being one of them doesn't really make up for anything.

    • @QuangTran27
      @QuangTran27 8 лет назад +6

      Jar Jar Binks
      I'm Asian so it sounds less offended since it wouldn't make sense for an Asian to be racist to another Asian unless you wanna based it off ethnicity. Asian can joke around and label each other on how we appear, what clothes we wearing, etc. It would be offensive if a non-Asian were to said "you're Asian, you look like Jackie Chan Jet Li, blah blah blah" If you want to call that .double standard, well too bad.
      I don't get what's being a different type of Asian or as the other person said, "being in the same continent of 4 billion people determine whether u are racist or not" had anything to do with what I said. You two obviously didn't get it.
      The reason why I said no racial, and then proceed to tell everyone I'm Asian because I don't want people to get confused and thinking I'm discriminating by saying "you look like this guy because you're simply Asian and that other guy is Asian too." when I am Asian myself. I was solely judging based off of the glasses and the hair style the person in the video has and he's Asian just like Kojima is and like I said earlier we Asian like to joke bases on appearance if they look like someone else twin or copy. Unlike non-Asian who will just go up to an Asian person and said, "you look like Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jet Li" when that person looks nothing like the movie stars. I also said no racial I'm Asian so people wouldn't get butthurt about it.

    Also it comes bundled with a Mario edition because of course Nintendo's worrying about releasing something unfamiliar and Japanese.

      Everything Nintendo is Japanese. Nintendo wouldn't worry one bit about releasing an awesome game like PAD Z. Also Mario was once unfamiliar and he was made in Japan. Perhaps Puzzle and dragons can gain more popularity with the release of the new 3ds puzzle and dragons game.

    I'd say both if you have the money. Personally if I HAD to choose one for a period of time, it'd be the Vita. I need my Nep Nep fix, plus there's tons of other great games. Plus it's simply a much more convenient and overall better designed handheld. And it can actually hold its $200 price point better than the New 3DS XL, which would be better priced at $100-150.
    Just my opinion, but I won't be surprised if I get attacked by Nintendites soon.

    Okay let's be honest, I had a ps vita, loved it I liked how well the tech was but! I hated how playstation doesn't want to pay attention to it as much as they did for the psp. They are paying more attention to the ps4 and has pretty much cancelled the ps vita. I had 6 games for it that I really played but then I got a 3ds and now I have 13 games for it and still growing.

    In all honesty I'd love to own both consoles (I already have the Vita) however it's kind of discouraging to get a 3ds where I am because well other than the games costing about 100+$ each, there's also the annoying region lock especially considering the fact that most games that I want on the 3ds are not available in my region

    I've got both, but not being a fan of (most of the) first-party Nintendo titles takes away a lot from this hardware. Though I agree the Vita doesn't / probably won't have many games for people who don't like (more-)niche japanese stuff, thanksfully that's mostly what I'm looking for. Plus fighting games and rhythm games.
    Oh and, one thing I would've said in the review learning-wise (but maybe it's just me?): the screen quality being better on Vita helps to look up kanji / make them out when they're "clunky" or even in general.

    • @NihongoGamer

    I'm loving the vita. I like my cake and eating it too so I also have a 3DS XL :) If you can afford it get both! I'm tired of Nintendo "kiddy" games (for lack of a better word, don't burn me Nintendo fanboys) so the more mature titles on the Vita appeal to me. Glad Nintendo decided to go with the XL instead of standard, although I see a lot of people complaining...smh there are those of us who prefer the bigger screens, stop being selfish geesh...jk jk I'm only saying this to those who wanted an either or situation in favor of the standard model. The ideal situation would be for them to release both models...there we go again with the cake and eating it ;)

      the new 3dsxl looks miles better then the psp vita. the psp vita that looks like a normal psp in my opinion. just bit bigger and has mine craft on it wow who cares mine crafts you can play on Xbox one ps4 why play it on a handheld. plus I take it insulting that the new 3dsxl has kiddy games no it don't it has decent games so don't say that plus if you think it has kiddy games don't play it simples. the new ds and new 3dsxl looks better has colour buttons at least closes not like psp vita and has Pokémon which you cant get on psp vita and smash bros so and lots of other games. so don't say it has baby games and you can decorate the new 3ds you cant on the new psp, and has better battery life. I like the ds graphics miles more then psp we get 3d stable this time. so whatever, choose what you like im going with the new 3ds

    Ok. I still don't know what to decide. Mine biggest problem with N3DS is that I can buy brand new Vita bundle with 5 games for the same price as standard N3DS without game (or charger:/). On the other hand I would like to play games like Bravely Default, Xenoblades and other RPGs. I'm not a huge fan of zelda/mario but RPGs are my favorite genere and I'm afraid I won't find to many of these on PSV.
    Help me please:( I haven't got handheld console since GBA SP and now I really need one.
    (I'm from Poland and the reason why N3DS is so expensive and Vita is so cheap is because there was no official premiere of nintendo products in Poland. You can get games without problems but games on Sony consoles are much... Much cheaper)

    I think one thing that God Eater has over MH is the story, as in there is one that's more then just "KILL THE MONSTER FOR ME!" God Eater's story is actually really fun, not amazing, but it always made me care about the characters that fought alongside my own. Plus the story can get pretty intense at some moments, or make your character look like a total badass in the story. Gameplay wise, I still prefer Monster Hunter's heavy weighted feeling combat, but the combat in GE is still fun, especially how you can switch between melee and gunner weapons at anytime in battle.
