There is also the very real opportunity cost of locking up $250K in video game gear versus an extremely modest 5% return in a retirement account. Is that collection going to go up in value by $12.5K every year? Probably not.

Tim Atwood's been a big name in collecting since the start of collecting, this is why he's "our pal". There's very few names from ages ago that are still active.
Joe H well think of the most likely person to have given Patrizio his copy of Stadium Events. Who else has multiple copies and is on good terms with pat? But Pat, Dragon Warrior IV was the most valuable NES game according to GameStop/FuncoLand as of 1999. They were asking $35 for it, as literally the only game NES they wanted over $20 for.

I don't think someone's gonna bite on this. Whoever has that kind of money has to live by Atwood, because moving costs are gonna be a pain. So that limits the market. Especially worrying about things getting damaged during a move. I'm guessing he's doing it to get people interested in certain items to make offers. I just hope he has plenty of time to work with as getting good sale prices for items always takes time and patience depending on the item and price. Lots of collectors will try their hardest to get something as cheap as possible, it's just the nature of the beast.
Game Boy DS and Game Boy 3DS. Wut? And he wrote Nintendo NES and Nintendo SNES. Looked at the list. I didn't know there were three Final Fantasy Legend games! And Squaresoft and Sunsoft versions?

Nobody is gonna buy it at that price or Tim is going to be sitting on this for years. Maybe a Saudi Prince will scoop these up. He'd do far better selling these in smaller lots or at conventions.
He has no intention of selling it neither at that stupid price nor on eBay at all to begin with. He put them up for sale there and at 250k because there are a lot of people (forums, subreddits, Facebook groups and the like) in the game collecting business that monitor eBay on a daily basis and thus, such a listing would never go unseen which results in the news spreading like wildfire and also turns in absolutely free publicity for him and his collection (some may argue that he doesn't need it, but still). The fact that he enabled the option to "make an offer" on the Ebay listing is also a clue that this is just a marketing stunt, otherwise he would've just put a standard auction listing. By allowing people to make offers on a BIN listing instead, he can test the market and see specifically how much potential buyers think his collection is worth on average. With that kind of feedback, he will then be able to go about and find a serious buyer and agree on a private deal. Just like random NWC cartridges appearing on Reddit, never to be seen again because they're bought by private collectors that lurk on these websites but never expose themselves and only deal in private.
@@videogameobsession it's taking up way too much room in our homes. I have a DVD/ BRay collection I hardly use collecting dust in my basement. Everything is going digital. It's inevitable.
