One thing to note on SNES Doom is that Randy Linden was a huge Doom fan and wanted to bring it to the console to let other gamers the experience. In fact, he is the reason we even have the "Doom runs on everything" meme and one of the factors iD giving people the iD tech engine to be open source. So while SNES Doom is underwhelming, for all its flaws, you gotta admire the guy.
I do recommend watching MVG video on SNES Doom coding after 25 years.

True, the game was more than playable at the time, it's just that people are spoiled today and can't even see the obvious, that the only console port that actually tried its best is this release, even the level layouts are closer to the PC original than the other ports, that were based on the simplified Jaguar version.

  • @JM-dq7xn
    @JM-dq7xn 15 дней назад +243

I feel like you're not giving SNES Doom enough credit, so I will:
It was written by Randy Linden, an absolute mad lad. "Linden did not have access to the source code of the PC version of Doom", while reverse-engineering a "disassembled Star Fox cartridge to gain access to the Super FX chip" (Wikipedia). In other words: he re-wrote the game, without a snes dev kit (or documentation), from scratch, to work on a hardware that had nowhere near required power to run Doom in the first place.
And yes, it's the same Randy Linden who wrote the "bleem!" emulator btw

It’s definitely amazing work, but not sure if it wouldn’t have been a better game if he made a proof of concept 3 level port to show ID, and then ask for the source code and jaguar maps to see if he can make better sacrifices to give it extra frame rate.
On one hand it has more complex level maps, more levels, and infinitely better music than the 32x version. The more consistent and better frame rate still makes the 32x version a lot more fun to play. Current hacks prove the 32x has a lot more in it to have been a lot better than it was on release, but if you gonna make sacrifices, don’t make it in the frame rate.

The Jaguar version though silent was really good, and the Saturn version was bad, especially for the hardware, as Duke 3D and Powerslave ran better with more complex level geometry, but it was better than this. As far as official ports and ways to play today it’s definitely between the snes and 3DO for the worst version. Especially ignoring the context between these games.

I have been a Virtua Fighter guy since March 1996, after first playing VF2 (I still remember EXACTLY where I was). VF2 is the single greatest fighting game ever made, followed by VF4 (though VF3 is my personal favorite).
January 1997 I bought Virtua Fighter "2" (I say that because it only had the original cast. No Shun or Lion) for my MegaDrive. The first game I ever bought with my own money. That was pretty much exclusively the only game I played at home until I got my N64 for my birthday in October 1997, and my PSX for Christmas 1997.
I didn't care it was 2D. I FINALLY had Virtua Fighter at home!!!! And all my practicing on the MegaDrive version led to lots of success in the Arcade.

I think 3DO Doom is the real bottom of the barrel as it manages to run worse than the Saturn and SNES versions on hardware that should've been able to run the game no problem, and its screwed up development story.
Speaking of Street Fighter and botched SNES ports, Street Fighter Alpha 2's own SNES port was another example of "just because you can doesn't mean you should". It used a special chip that compressed some of the game's assets and plays okay, but it pales compared to the other versions.
King of Fighters 95 also had a rough PS1 port like Metal Slug, and that one actually came stateside. I think both games were among the first NeoGeo titles to come to PS1.
Other lousy ports of mention include Sonic the Hedgehog on GBA (there's a few other lousy sonic ports but this one takes the cake), Hexen on PS1 (which you've covered), Duke Nukem 3D on Genesis, and Mega Man X on iOS.

Felt like an impossible port plus the soundtrack was legendary.
Also MK2 on SNES was full blood and miles better than the Megadrive version.

14:02 I lived in the middle of nowhere in the atlantic ocean, the country of Iceland, the first time I played this game was at a friend's house, this kid from Tailand had a Playstation from Asia and a copy of Metal Slug, then not so long after a video rental store in my neighborhood got a Metal Slug arcade cabinet.
I must've been pretty lucky to have played both versions as a kid, I became a fan and bought Metal Slug X and the rest of the series as I got older.

25:33 - Considering the Arcade game The Punisher was rather obscure to find, the Sega home console adaption was the only source of the game there was.
And naturally, the 16-bit Sega system could not be the arcade game in any way, but for what it offers it was all we knew. Again, most of us had never played the Arcade game so it was not much to say. The game was non the less doiung what you expected and you had a good game time. But if you had been one of those who had played the Arcade game at the time, I get it.
The Punisher arcade game is actually included in the newly released "Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics", so now the game is officaly re-released 👍

1:40 Wait, what? PC port of RE4 was so bad they basically had to do it again. It's legendary. Just because the graphics were better (well, higher res at least) doesn't mean the game was too. Bad PC ports were very common at the time, especially from Japanese devs who always prioritised cosoles (not the Xbox of course, lol)

Both doom and wolfenstein for SNES I believe was designed by the same guy, since both games required completely custom engines to run on the SNES. There's some cool documentaries about both ports you can find on youtube, actually pretty fascinating from a technology point of view on how he squeezed those games into the SNES, but obviously gameplay wise he could never get the frame rate high enough to be truly fun as the original games :(

The SNES Wolfenstein is based on the Macintosh Port, hence only front facing enemies.
Get your hands on the 3DO or Atari Jaguar port of the Mac version, which are the better way to play the new missions. They're uncut, too. And cheaper secondhand.

Because you ARE playing on hurt me plenty. You have to pause the game in order to get to the menu and select “New Game”, then you can select the difficulty and episode. Though what IS kinda stupid is the game locks The Shores of Hell behind Hurt me plenty and higher and Inferno on ultra-violence and nightmare. There is a patch to fix this and the strafing if you REALLY want the novelty of SNES doom and want it to be a bit playable…or maybe wait for the limited run release if it ever comes out.
