It was mine too, but then I rewatched Hill House and Bly with my mom and those two just hit home because of the heavy family focused element.
I'd also say that every thing he has done except for the cancer movie, has been my shared number one 😅
PS. Bly is so underrated, even I underrated it for a long time. It is insane how deep and profound that script is.

Flanagan has done some really solid work when it comes to horror/suspense. I thought 'Doctor Sleep' was done about as well as anyone could have possibly hoped for considering how fiercely loyal some fans of 'The Shining' are and the fact that it's a modern sequel to a 40 year old movie. Loved Rebecca Ferguson in that, too. And I also really enjoyed 'Hush'. I thought it had a unique take on the whole home invasion genre. And then there are works like 'Oculus', 'The Haunting of Hill House', etc. It feels like he has been around FOREVER and has his fingerprints on everything that has horror elements to it. And to top it all off he also sounds like a legitimately good guy. I wasn't too excited about anything after 'Exorcist: Believer', but now that it sounds like Flanagan will be helming that project...I'm sold.

My recommendation for the Exorcist remake to Mike Flannigan. Start out with a contractor crew to renovate or repair the McNeal house. And, while they are waiting for the new buyers to come to the house; have them talk about what happened with the destruction of the bedroom with flash backs of the old movie. Then the new family drives up to let the renovation begin and Milke Flannigan can do his magic with the rest of the story. Just a good realistic sequel to the ending of the first Exorcist.

Great interview! My one “criticism” (pun intended), was I felt Flanagan was overly harsh and critical of those who criticize a film, and their motives for doing so. To assume it’s just for an endorphin rush of feeling superior seems extremely dismissive. I also wish Chris had followed up the line of questioning with whether Flanagan respects film criticism. It was clear however from that opinion why Chris stopped filming negative reviews.

I think film criticism as a filmmaker is probably a personality and ethics-based thing, rather than some of the stuff Mike addressed. Quinten Tarantino critiqued natural-born killers, especially the casting of Woody Harrelson. He obviously offended the director and that probably resulted in vitriol.
You could be in a profession where making something is hard but it doesn't mean you still can't judge the end result of that difficult process. Products have many moving pieces so the failure could be because of other factors, bad marketing, budget cuts cuz a major star pulled out of the project, the producers having the final say on the script or selecting the worst version? If a competent plumber sees shoddy work, even if it's hard, he will still call it out.

@@theredmachete5877 Does that mean people can't make movies anymore because there are homeless people? Does that mean we can't go see movies in theaters because there are homeless people? Does that mean we can't ever support anyone making art or other stuff because people are homeless? Where do you draw the line?

@EamonKelly entertaining yourself and giving your hard earned cash to someone else to live THEIR dream is not the same thing, you understand this right ? If you're hungry, you eat first. But if you give your money so some person can open a restaurant so HE can be rich while the neighborhood around him is hungry...I guess you gotta think about your choices there huh. Perspective and priorities.

@@theredmachete5877 What if the business that someone wants to start could help those in need of homes and shelters. Am I wrong for wanting to donate to that?
