Ari Aster's HEREDITARY Influences

- A twisty, terrifying, pull-no-punches dive into madness, Hereditary's easily one of 2018's best horror films, and we're hyped for all of you to see it.
Before you do, though (or, hell, after you do), check out the following video interview we recently conducted with Hereditary director Ari Aster. He walks us through a number of horror films that inspired his own, and some of the titles he namechecks are kind of surprising.
#Hereditary #AriAster #Midsommar
Ari Aster's movies: 😈
Ari Aster in real life: 🙂
I don't trust him
You ever heard that saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”? lol. That applies to life dude! Ari makes great movies BTW. I like that whole occult approach to horror. It’s realistic with films added magic! Love it! I hope he makes more like Hereditary and Midsomer. Dig into some more present and ancient cults for material Ari!
@@wearewarriorseaglesjaguars6342 exactly!
There is something about horror directors. If you look at James Wan, that guy's also the happiest. Weird how that works.
Me when I see Ari Aster: 😈
When you think of The Shining as a comedy. That's how you come up with Hereditary and Midsommar.
Can I say that for me too the Shining is more like a comedy?
@@gabrielesimone1372 same lmao was kinda dissapointed by The Shining
It is kinda funny though
Shining is dark comedy
@@StairwayToHvNN in modern times it seems that way but my dad was telling me that movie terrified him back in the day
It’s disturbing that a man who broke me so many times with two movies, seems like such a chill and cool dude
It's funny I've watched interviews with actors who work with horror movie director's that say they're all like teddy bears irl kk lol 😂 for eg M Night Shyamalan and Os Perkins like everybody says they are like the coolest most chill people lol so random
I love that Aster basically admits here that he sought to traumatize the audience with his images. It worked, man.
Oh Jesus did it work
Jack Clare why would you watch a horror movie if you’re not looking to be scared?
michaela What if a film makes you triggered to the point of suicide? Are you ok with that? Fuck you.
@@KaneK1234 if you're that sensitive then you need to avoid these movies. Stop arguing to remove great films
Deckard If your triggers are that sensitive then don’t fucking watch intense movies. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch anything. If a director puts a rape scene in a movie that would trigger a PTSD attack for me then it’s my responsibility to check if the movie even has a scene like that to avoid it in the first place or to stop watching it. The responsibility does not lie on the filmmaker so no, fuck you.
Ari was so polite it's hard to believe he's the mastermind behind such depressing and scary movies.
I know right it almost like he got two side to him
Y'all really try and label ppl based on the product they put out.
Many polite ppl have repressed emotions
That’s usually how it is
The happiest people usually think of the most fucked up shit
Films mentioned:
Ugetsu
Onibaba
The Innocents
The Haunting
Don't Look Now
The Shining
Carrie
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover

I have just come back from seeing Hereditary. I am speechless, that film was phenomenal!
H_Isitt phenomenal, and make sure to watch Midsommar in August!
@@PYMGUS well they can do what they want!! and yes it was phenomenal* it's all good!
@Gerry Buckets It was heads above Hereditary which started off good then just got sillier.
You need to watch it a few times to get the symbolism and purpose of the film. Midsommar will be a cult classic in the folk horror genre it leans heavily on The Wicker Man (1973) not the shitty remake.
Uhh...its phenomenal
@Gerry Buckets it was pretty good. It was a little too long and the pacing was a little strange, but i loved the cinematography. I liked the score. I loved the gore (particularly the senicide scene and the end). And I really liked the end. It wasn't quite as good as Hereditary but I did enjoy it. I'm definitely gonna watch it again someday. Hereditary was a movie that was definitely good to watch twice, i feel like Midsommar will be the same way
After seeing "HEREDITARY" for the 1st time (I've seen it 5x now, HUGE fan) I felt like it was a horror version of "ORDINARY PEOPLE".
One of the BEST scenes in "HEREDITARY" is the dinner scene. The rawness of the fight between mother & son after their horrific loss.
I thought the same thing, actually. That’s so funny, I haven’t seen anyone else say that
@@guyyouseewhenyoudie
Wow, glad I'm not the only one.
Josh Johnston If you like Ordinary People, you should deeeefinitely check out In The Bedroom. Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei are great it in, and it was a big inspiration for Hereditary. One of my favoritrs
ive seen it 14 times
Yes, complete agreement, and it is nice to see that he indeed intended elements both of family drama and the horror genre. You could actually cut the horror out of the film and it would still be interesting. It would obviously be a very different movie, but it would still be an interesting movie. The rawness of the emotions in the dinner scene gets me every time I see it.
Yeah, I was fully expecting him to mention The Shining. I really saw it with the closeups of Annie's horrified face. Just like Kubrick did with the Wendy and Danny characters.
Coinraker he did
OMG yes! the facial expressions!!!
@@terencefletcher4173 yeah I know. 😉
He has made 2 great features and hopefully it only gets great from there!
Definitely has the potential to be a legend
midsommar will only be out in the theatres in Bangkok at the end of August. It is killing me.
@Jon Kozak i like midsommar more. though i think hereditary is incredible
@Jon Kozak both incredible in their own right. Maybe it needs another viewing or some more time to stew for you. I personally didn't enjoy midsommar immediately after viewing it. It was the next week when I couldn't stop thinking about it that I realized it was a masterpiece in modern horror.
Hereditary is one of my favourite movies ever, but I was so disappointed with Midsommar... I expected much more, I hated how stupid characters were and the slow pace of the movie bored me a lot, a lot of people was disappointed in my cinema room.
I felt Midsommar was much more powerful. Didn't need any supernatural aspects. It's a heavy movie, but more due to what is implied, rather than what is shown.
Goodness I love this man, I love films that make me uncomfortable, frustrated, and upset
Hereditary and Midsommar both make me uncomfortable, keep up the amazing work
Midsommar made me feel ill but it was amazing
@@loganhunt8029 Midsommar was more entertainment to me, where Hereditary affected my mindset more lol
Out of all horror directors right now aster is my favorite Jesus midsommar was great so many hidden details in the background like the face in the trees really hope he doesn’t stop making horror movies
Faces in the trees?! Oh god I missed that detail, looking forward to a second viewing.
directors cut i watched like 3 times now lol
It's very interesting to me to see how the word 'influence' means here something that swings between the good and the bad. He has been influenced by things he loved and also by things that creeped him badly. I am still having nightmares in the middle of the night thinking about the naked man on the doorway and the way his face was lit. I never had such nightmares since the exorcist. And I am now 45yo. WELLDONE ARI! More, please!
yeah, hereditary had a lot of haunting moments but the naked dude is the thing i still dread the most when im alone at home. effin masterpiece
All the naked figures in and out of the shadows were creepy as hell. They were all fat too. haha
There were those moments where the movie delivered straight up horror, like with the figures lurking in the shadows craving for a body host, and others, terrifyingly accurate occult symbolisms scattered throughout the whole movie, although those might not be felt by all of the audience because they can't interpret the meanings of the symbols, however, they are, to me, more haunting than the creepy cult members standing in the shadows.
I also appreciate there was no heavy make up to the possessed, which I hate in most possession movies, both old and new ones. Possession doesn't turn the host into a boogeyman, it's the psyche and mentality that is supposed to be terrifying. It's a practise to scare audiences from another time.
Hereditary was something fresh in every aspect.
Ari is the kind of guy that sits in the back of the class then you open his notebooks there're drawings of corpses and a severed head with a smile all over.
He puts out one movie and he’s already the go to filmmaker for me when it comes to horror/drama. Hereditary is masterful work. I still need to watch Midsommar.
Did you?
@@SillentAssault yep! Great movie. Really crazy.
First two movies this guys ever made have been amazing. I’m really excited for the rest of his career!
I'm cautiously optimistic. I just really hope he doesn't fuck it up with his next film. He's the most promising newcomer since Darran Aronofksi and that was 20 years ago.
Let’s hope he doesn’t become a Shamylan and do a 180 after a few flicks.
He's not going to fuck it up.
I noticed a small nod to The Exorcist, about half way through during the second seance, the candle's flame explodes into a large plume, similar to how the torch explodes in the attic in The Exorcist.
Good catch!!!!
I've noticed a touch of the movie CARRIE in the ending in Hereditary in the tree house
don7403 I caught a Night of the Hunter type vibe from that
It's all very flattering of him to mention those of the Japanese films as his inspiration!
Same
Just like George Lucas. Taking inspiration from the east.
Hereditary truly scared the first movie as an adult that made me cry from fear AFTER THE MOVIE I was so terrified to drive alone or sleep at night and even during the day it had me scared and the score ending was in my opinion the POV of the demons triumphant victory in taking possession
Please, keep delivering.
Your portrayal of horror is so refreshing for the whole industry.
Very articulate, even doing his research to put extremely accurate occult symbolism in the movies and Easter eggs for the few emthusiasts, the Hitchcockian cinematography, the drama.
I can't list how phenomenal his work is, I will lose count.
Aster is 2 for 2 with fantastic horror films.
Nailed the truth here.
He's got good taste. All some of my favorite movies. Especially Don't Look Now and Peter Greenaway's film.
Extremely promising director. Hereditary is one of the most impressive movies I've seen in the past few years, Midsommar looks promising as well.
I can't wait to see Midsommar!
@@givemefreebeers6718 Same here
I kinda saw midsommar as a dark comedy and it worked for me. I still prefer hereditary. If you haven’t watched ari asters “the strange thing about the johnsons” give it a shot it’s on RUclips
@@Judgeholden95 I loved both movies for different reasons, but ultimately I prefer Hereditary. And yeah I've seen the short film, man was that uncomfortable lol
It’s impossible for me to see the movie as any kind of comedy because the tone from the outset is ruthlessly grim. That opening sequence is beyond words, mostly thanks to the score. That being said, I still really dug the rest of it
Any Hereditary fan owes it to themselves to see "The Cook, The Thief, his Wife, and her Lover"
Agreed. One of my favorite movies of all time. Also loved the Draughtsman’s Contract as well... need to watch more of Greenaway’s works
In terms of style, it's amazing, but the pacing is lacking a lot, after you get introduced to the characters, it just gets repetetive, even boring for a while. It would probably be an amazing movie to watch while you're high, or maybe if you're a child.
Love love love Draughtsman's Contract, and that amazing Michael Nyman music. A Zed and Two Naughts, Drowning by Numbers. These films have permanently changed the structure of my brain, hopefully for the better.
I remember seeing THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE and HER LOVER at the movies. I was arrested by the subject matter and especially the music. I just love that style of film making where it's in your face and relentless and you want to look away but can't.
He’s amazing. Not a big fan of Midsommar but Hereditary is one of my favorite movies. Looking forward to future works. Huge horror fan here.
Ari bears the mark of greatness himself ... just like all the great auteurs that came before, he not only gets inspired by great movies but also at the same time make something TOTALLY COMPLETELY original and groundbreaking out of his admirations for those movies ..
You can tell he loves Kubrick
"Peter Greenaway who i think is probably just an evil person" ahahahahahahahaha i know exactly what he means tho
The family themes in his movies really stuck with me. I love it. It makes the horror way more heavy.
This dude is destined to be one of the great horror movie director and screenwriter. I haven't seen Midsommar yet...but I've heard it's more disturbing than Hereditary. His films shake you to the core. He's right...the horror movies of the past few decades have been trash. The ones that were half decent or good were remakes...mostly of Japanese films. Ari Aster is a gift to the horror movie genre.
Don't watch The Strange Thing About the Johnsons.
Love hearing the influences, definitely going to check some of them out!
"I think The Shining was almost .. for me works more like a Comedy than a Horror film." - Ari Aster
Classic hipster hot take contrarian.
This guys work is genius I haven’t went through so many different emotions in one movies with both of the movies I’ve seen of his.
Everyone Else: Ari Aster is such a nice guy I can’t imagine how he made this film
Me: Hell naw I can see the crazy in his eyes😂
agreed. But he's totally low key hot. I hope he's gay
After viewing the trailer for Beau is Afraid, I finally strapped myself down last night to watch Hereditary . I'm not a horror movie junkie, but that is the type of horror I respect. Exhilirating. Maybe it was too obvious, but I expected Ari to cite "Rosemary's Baby" because the "Joan" character is straight up Minnie Castevet.
Agreed! He has mentioned Rosemarys baby as an influence for hereditary in other interviews though 🖤
Hereditary is the best American horror I have seen in the last decade. Some scenes have stayed with me since I saw it on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
2:37 Hate to contradict the great ari aster but the shining has a “one month later” slide before starting the weekday sequence
Same vibe of artistry as Junji Ito or Hidetaka Miyazaki. They specialize in horror and the insignificance of humans in their stories, but they look so nice and humble.
Aster is one director who’s new work I will always eagerly watch for!
Don't look now is one of the best films ever made
Ari Aster seems like such a nice guy. To think he wrote and directed Midsommar and Hereditary is crazy.
I'm surprised he hasn't mentioned the Exorcist! Both had that slow burn ambience and both had the Greek tragedy vibe where the main character have no control of the situation and their fates.
as I was watching Hereditary I thought about a Dutch film I saw a long time ago called "Borgman"
Fast becoming one of my all time favourite directors
Do you think he consciously avoided mentioning Rosemary's Baby because they have been compared so much?
yeah rosemarys baby was one of the major influences especially the end.
Great Director hope he become in the Future one of the best Horror Film Directors, he is on verry good Way👌👌👌
He said he’s not doing anymore horror for a while. He said he’s working on a sci-fi script right now, and he has several, non horror scripts already done that he wants to do. He’s said he will do more horror eventually but not until he does some other genres.
My dad, brother, and myself went into the theater Midsommar was playing in, started hitting a dab cartridge waiting for the movie to start. Being preposterously stoned, I felt everything.
The VVitch was great too ;)
That was Robert Eggers though
woah how am i just now discovering your channel? im .about to binge watch it all
I'll rewatch midsommar and hereditary during these holidays
Reminder this is the dude that ended one of his movies with two main characters brutally dying a young kid becoming the body for a demon
I love that he saw Greenaway's TCTTHWHL as a kid. I went to that movie multiple times in the theater as a freshly minted seventeen year old. It's insane.
He's the best thing that happened to horror movies in a long time. Both Hereditary and Midsommar are great features. So disturbing and sad.
I always have the impulse to look up any movie that director i like mention in interviews.
I wonder if Ari ever just chills and watches Step Brothers or something. I've watched so many videos of him talking about movies he loves and they're mostly obscure, dark, disturbing, etc. I love stuff like that to, but I love all kinds of movies.
I dont know why he dosent mention Rosmarys baby?
Seriosly ari aster reminds me of pier pasolinis salo cold calculating and precise
Watching this now, I can see ways how Carrie helped to also influence Midsommar.
I find it really funny that he’s the worlds biggest film nerd and his taste is so niche, I guess that’s apart of why he’s so great as a director
This film was probably the most disturbing/scary movie I’ve ever seen
Brilliant Director ! his only two films are already Masterpieces
I always still get goosebumps at the haunting from 1960 and the end of don’t look now ending scares me
I don’t like horror films but I watched ‘Hereditary’ twice at the cinema bcus it’s so great.
Wow. Usually horror fans like me like it. Never thought a non-horror fan wouldn’t like it
Horrors pretty much all suck these days but this was definitely one of the better ones I have seen.
I was hoping he would say The Changeling with George C. Scott. That movie is Hereditary 40 years before hereditary in cinematography and tone, with a big dose of Poltergeist and minus the oppresivley evil Satanic cult aspects. If you've not seen it, see it!
Such a phenomenal movie. For a couple of weeks after watching the movie for the first time, my mind imagined that there was a head hanging on unlit streetlights. I happen to work night shift then.
I don’t know why he didn’t mention the wicker man or rosemarys baby
In other interviews he says Rosemary's Baby was a big influence
One thing is to make a horror film and another is to make a depressing sad movie
Dont Look Now, The Shining, Carrie, The Innocents, The Haunting, Ordinary People, etc This guy has great taste in film
I loved Midsommar and Ari Aster’s an excellent horror director
I see the influence of Bergman in Hereditary with the use of little figurines.
really agree and have noticed how ari captures true emotional trauma in films ..thats what all these horror films lack ..emotions/drama/trauma
also noticed ari uses alot of senior citizens in his movies..always old people thrown in there
Glad to make your acquaintance Mr Aster
It take a strange mind to came up with what this man came up with
Imagine just watching a film, and thinking I’m gonna use some of that style but with a sauce of other styles from other horror films. That’s for sure going to be some good sauce.
When I write I try to create a world that hasn’t been seen before, or a topic that is yet to be created but it’s there everyday unacknowledged. I never thought of looking into darker themes of horror yet.
I thought he may have mentioned "Come and See" as well
I have never heard Ari speak and after this he seems like a pretty cool guy.
I really hope he keeps making movies
does anybody know what song that is playing while hes talking about Carrie? i assumed it was from the movie but that doesnt seem to be the case..
darude sandstorm
Hereditary wears it's influences so blatantly, but is disjointed and loses it's tension about 2/3rd's of the way in. It's an ok film but I don't get why people are so desperate to lose their shit over it. I watched it with my girlfriend who nearly always ducks out halfway through a truly effective horror film because she's such a scaredy. Even she got bored before the end. Emperor's new clothes anyone?
Your girlfriends sounds like someone who gets scared by generic shit from "The Conjuring universe" and general jump out of your seat scares. Hereditary is the horror version of real life, not the bubble people mostly escape in after workday.
I’m surprised more people don’t see what a fraud he is.
Exorcist III with the old woman crawling like a spider across the ceiling.
Someone wants in the Criterion Collection...
He deserves it 100%.
Aster is the real deal and indeed bringing fresh air to the horror genre. When I was a kid and I saw that crucified Jesus under the stairs, I was traumatized.
I never saw The Shining as a comedy it freaked me out as a child. And yes Jack Torrence was already a violent crazy man ready to kill his family because it's revealed he was putting them in the hospita through violence way before the movie begins.
First modern horror movie to leave a lasting affect on me. I was disturbed by the end of it and then happy because so realized someone should actually still create a good horror movie!
Carrie scared the hell out of me when I first watched it at 12 or 13 years old
SPOILERS: oh my god when annie was killing herself at the end i knew it reminded me of something, she looked so much like carrie
Hereditary is in doubtfully the best horror movie of all time. Amazing job from acting, audio, storyline and pace. So uncomfortable to watch at times but damn is it powerful.
it’s weird to think this is the guy who made something like the strange thing about the johnsons
My favourite director. Midsommar is a masterpiece.
Peter Greenaway! What a god! :D
Great video!
The underrated "The Innocents." I'm actually impressed that he mentioned it. But c'mon, its moslty "The Wicker Man."
Him and Lars Von Trier are probably the best horror directors now, I also appreciate James Wan, even if he’s more in “ commercial “ movies. Whatever, I still prefer Lars Von Trier more than Aster, I didn’t really like Hereditary but Midsommar is a really great movie.
this is a well done video
I wish I was as passionate to make horror movies like him. I mean I have ideas but not sure it would work.
Midsomer was ridiculous
This guys insane
