LMAO at “it’s not biscuits or gravy but I don’t know what it is”. That’s brilliant. Normally biscuits with sausage gravy don’t have cheese in them. Def try adding cooked ground sausage in the gravy…makes all the difference. Lots of us expats in Florida and looks like we’re all enjoying the Butlers ❤

There has been a slight miscommunication. While those ARE biscuits, they are NOT the biscuits we use when making "Biscuits and Gravy."
The ones we use are plain - no garlic, no herb, no cheese.
I'd recommend trying again, using just plain biscuits, and most definitely making the sausage gravy to go with. Also, since it is most often a side dish, maybe have it with a bit of scramble egg and a couple strips of bacon.
You won't have to pretend to like it, I promise!

I'm born and raised in the USA - never had biscuits and gravy until about 5 years ago. Never had an interest having been from the North but my DIL made and, of course, I gave it a go. Love it - absolutely delicious! Big major differences from your preparation is we use plain flaky biscuits sliced and sausage gravy. Highly recommend that. Great show - thank you, as always.

Biscuits and Gravy is a Breakfast item, its very popular, My wife has biscuits and gravy often when we got out for breakfast here in Oregon, she just has a small order of those but its also available with eggs and sausage or bacon as a full breakfast, The name biscuits and gravy really throws you off, American terms are quite different.
American Biscuits are very much like fluffy scones, shes never had cheese in hers, the gravy she has is a white gravy its got sausage meat in it, that adds to the flavor, She will often eat the bottom half of the biscuit with the gravy and save the top half to have with butter and blackberry jam.
My wifes adventurous, I'm a bacon and egg man, boy do I miss English sausage and bacon.
Thanks for the review we enjoyed it and thought it came out great.

Adding the sausage and the grease from the sausage really improves the flavor. Biscuits by themselves, play the part of a roll. They are great for absorbing all those wonderful juices and sauces that would just go to waste on your plate. You can also replace your morning toast with biscuits. They go great with butter and jam but I would say honey is my favorite.

Also, they made a simple white gravy which is radically different than a country style gravy. If it had suet in it, wouldn't that make them more like a dumpling rather than a scone? Like Sharon said about putting them on top of a casserole or stew maybe? Some are saying you need ground sausage meat in the white sauce, but I don't think even that would tempt me. White sauce to me is for making parsley/cheese/bread sauces etc not putting over a biscuit/scone/dumpling. Maybe I'm too fussy🤔😂

In America we usually don’t eat the gravy so plain. There are many things you can add to the gravy. Those biscuits are not for gravy.
We split the plain biscuit and pour the gravy over. If you come to the southern part of America please try the sausage gravy with biscuits.

In Britain we brown our meat and poultry off before cooking for appearance as well. I love Asian, Indian food however I do choose tikka so there's colour on the meat. Chinese food is wonderful however the poultry meat is pale and in my humble opinion I'd prefer a bit of quick fried poultry to colour it. Maybe the reason is it would change the taste. Lol.

Comparing biscuits with scones is like comparing bread to cake. They are a different texture, have a different taste, and different ingredients. Those biscuits looked good but you haven't tasted biscuits and gravy until you try it with sausage gravy. But that plain gravy goes very well with chicken fried steak or chicken.

This country gravy has been a favorite of mine since childhood. Besides biscuits it can be used on chicken, chicken croquettes, country fried steak (aka chicken-fried steak), sausages or even scrambled eggs. My all-time favorite though is an item referred to as breakfast pizza. It's a pizza that uses the country gravy in place of the usual tomato-based pizza sauce and is topped with beakfast sausage, scrambled eggs and cheddar and mozzarella cheese. It can also include diced ham or bacon or chicken ... I've seen it with many different types of meats (sometimes all at once, sometimes just one at a time). It's one of those pizzas that tastes good either reheated or cold the next day as well.

There's a great video on RUclips about the difference between scones and biscuits.
Basically, they're the [not] same thing, with the main difference being eggs and sugar.
Scones tend to have eggs & sugar, biscuits tend not to have eggs or sugar.
So, scones are slightly denser/heavier and maybe sweeter. Biscuits are primarily butter & flour, no eggs or sugar, so they're a bit lighter, fluffier, more buttery.
But they're both from basically the same family of quick breads. And there may be different varieties of "scones" that leave out sugar or eggs, and are thus more similar to what we'd call "biscuits." So, there may be **some** overlap...? But, at heart, they're **basically** the same, just with minor differences in texture/ingredients.

    • @MGmirkin
      @MGmirkin Год назад

And, yeah, adding browned ground/'minced' sausage meat to make "sausage gravy" takes it up a notch.
White / "country" gravy [as opposed to "brown gravy" using just meat drippings and/or a little flour to thicken it] is quite nice on its own. Goes well with mashed potatoes, or chicken-fried steak, or over biscuits. But sausage gravy is just that little extra bit better. Quite savory, meaty, and filling.
Typically, I think we'd also slice the biscuits in half horizontally, and then serve them "open faced" with the inside up and sausage gravy smothering it/them on top.
Can be had on its own. But can also be accompanies by hash browns, eggs, bacon or sausage links, toast, fruit, pancakes / french toast, etc. That'd be a large / full American sit-down breakfast when like eating out at a restaurant or diner, or maybe like a large weekend meal when we actually have time to cook a full breakfast, as opposed to just grabbing something quick before heading out the door... Like cereal or a bagel and cream cheese, or some fruit, or fast food on the way in to work, etc.

It looked just like a basic white sauce. Once you've done a white sauce you can add parsley for parsley sauce, cheese for cheese sauce etc. Either way I can't imagine having something that's like our cheese scones with a white sauce poured over. Just doesn't appeal to me, but neither does putting steak seasoning on steak🤔🤔I think I'd be a bit like Martin where it doesn't quite compute in your brain & you can't put your finger on it🤔😂

Every gravy is different, there really isnt a single codified recipe. Its basically used from leftover fats, meats and grease from other things. If making base by itself though, its usually ground country sausage browned, then add flour and brown the flour as well. Then add in milk slowly and then keep stirring it as it thickens. Depending on what meat/grease you use as the base the color will vary drastically.
