i had to walk out of my room and close the door to give this man some privacy...
Lol, best comment.
ROFLMAO! i was blushing a little. glad it wasn't just me.
Yup, he needed some alone time.
Yep bruh had a coming to Jesus moment. The words were literally taken from his mouth. He'll never see the world the same again.
😂
I've seen multiple reactions from non-Americans trying to make biscuits and gravy. This is the only one that truly looks like proper southern made. Great job.
Thank you.
I agree. I just watched one where the biscuits looked like hockey pucks. This one was great.
Yeah, it’s a tough recipe to get right but when you do, biscuits are the best. Even with some butter and jelly or jam.
Most people I've seen use a bagged mix like pioneer brabd.
Yea the biscuits came out perfect flakey soft in the middle crisp top and bottom my mother would be proud
American here. It must be primal. I’m always so surprised to see how much other cultures love our biscuits and gravy.
It's because we add flavor (spices) to our food 😂😂😂😂😂
The ultimate comfort food.
Makes me wonder what are these people eating. 😂
There are very few other things that I would say is a quintessential American dish. B+G is just so uniquely American.
Thoroughly enjoyable video.
First time I've ever seen someone who's not had the dish before make biscuits and gravy that would be passable on a typical southern table. So well done.
It's a very simple thing to make. There's really not very much room to mess it up
@@rachelsill79you have no idea what you're talking about. Source, chef of 25 years. People can mess up anything, easily.
@@rachelsill79 while it's true that it's not a complicated dish, I've seen many examples, both online and in real life, of people trying to make it and producing something that, while it may or may not be good, would seem pretty odd to anyone who grew up eating this.
@@rachelsill79 Hold my beer, Rachel!
People make horrible biscuits from scratch all the time. lol
I'm so used to seeing videos of non-americans trying regional american food, and whoever provides it gets it wrong.
However, You Sir, NAILED IT!
Congratulations!
This video has restored my faith in the internet. As a Southerner watching this gentleman across the world enjoying such a humble meal with this much pleasure…it has made my day.
Good, simple food, with no chemicals...... is rare now. It's like heaven.
The taste of fast food sickens me. I cannot eat it. It tastes like acid to me because the salt content is about 20x's what I'm used to.
It's very odd to feel like a proud father watching his children when witnessing a grown man make beautiful ass biscuits
Ass biscuits are something totally different. We call the sewage treatment plant around here the biscuits and gravy factory.
There's a reason "buns" is a slang for "ass."
I didn't even realize he made ass biscuits as well. Good eye
Finally! Someone got it right! I literally put my phone down and applauded, I was so proud and happy. I almost shed a tear seeing your reaction and I kept saying "Yes. This is how you do biscuits and gravy. "
I was impressed by those biscuits. They looked fantastic and like they were fresh out of a redneck kitchen. Perfect!
nope
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
100% Grew up in the south. His looked pretty good.
Add bacon grease
Great job... as a Southern woman I rate this a 10 out of 10. You did everything exactly how it's meant to be made. I watched quite a few of these videos and none had it completely right to our Southern standards. You nailed it.
I'm 65, American and a farm-girl ... Raised on biscuits and gravy - Breakfast and Supper - Anytime you need a hot, comforting meal guaranteed to warm your very soul ...Love to serve it with scrambled eggs and fried potatoes .....
Loved your reaction - Made me smile !!
All in the same pile with some shredded cheddar
Don’t forget the onion too.😊
Yeah, I like to cover half the plate with biscuits, other half with hash browns, and drown them in gravy, and throw in some onion as well
OMG! Those are my favorites and I'm sitting here hungry since I haven't been feeling good and haven't made anything to eat so far today and it's 2:30p.m.!! Ugh! Now that's what I want!!!!
@@sharcrumpotatoes?
what?
no grits?!
perish the thought!
As someone from the South Eastern US, I started watching this with so much skepticism. But the technique was absolutely flawless every step of the way for the biscuits and the gravy. Well done Sir!
Lol, thank you for watching.
The biscuits looked perfect! They obviously tasted delicious, too.
Same! Totally impressed. It looks perfect & delicious. Exactly like what we make/serve in GA.
That was the first thing I noticed, the biscuits were so pretty. The gravy looked good too
Surely that tiny knob of butter wasnt enough?
While watching you cook, I was like Ok, biscuit preperation looks good, hopefully it comes out right, and they came out perfect. Then you were making the gravy, and I was like ok preperation looks good, hope he makes it thick and not runny, and again, perfection. Welcome to Southern comfort food.
He truly nailed it. Just needed a little more fresh ground black pepper on top at the table. But the fact that everything was done so perfectly makes that almost irrelevant. You're the first and only non-American I've seen hit a home run on biscuits and gravy. It's now your responsibility to pass on what you have learned and share it with your neighbors, sir! Enjoy!
I've lived in the Southern US all of my life, this meal was eaten daily at my house growing up and even after 30 years of marriage....this is a staple! You made us Southern folk proud. Great video!
I discovered another thing as a child, being that my dad and his family was from Appalachia. Now, biscuits and gravy was a staple for me too because my southern mama was the cook. But my "other grandma" was from Appalachia and they make a thing called "chocolate gravy". Biscuits are the same, but chocolate gravy for a kid was like being ushered straight into heaven. Supposedly "po' folk" food, but if so them fancy rich people are missing out. And I think it's mostly just cocoa powder, sugar, and water or something. I only know my mama taught my wife at some point and she makes it every once in a while and it's just far too good to be real.
When I got married I made my southern husband scratch biscuits. I don't use a recipe any more. I've made so many.
@@Kelnxyes!!! Kentucky girl here, and I too grew up with chocolate gravy!! I still make it myself! It's so good!!
@@Kelnx I'm from southern Appalachia myself and so many people I know love chocolate gravy, but I have to admit I'm not a fan. It's fine but 1) I'd rather be eating real gravy and biscuits and 2) if I want something sweet for breakfast I'd rather have pancakes, waffles, cinamon rolls, biscuits with jelly or honey, or various other things.
I'm no southerner, but it looks like he did a good job on the biscuits. The gravy...I would make from a roux directly, but the recipe looks like it was about the same effect. I suspect he nailed it, and he certainly enjoyed it! I'd love some biscuits and gravy right now, yum!
You are the first non-American that I've seen make the biscuits correctly. They look perfect. I'm from the Great Lakes, so biscuits and gravy aren't really our thing, but so glad you loved them. They are a staple in the South.
They are on the menu in every diner and breakfast place in the northwest. I wonder why here but not there. We also eat JoJo's. Real JoJo's.
Coming from a family of bakers/cooks (my great-grandma, maternal grandparents, my mom, now me), biscuits and gravy are a staple due to the ease of creation and the minimal monetary outlay...even though we're in central IL, it's still a fairly regular appearance in mealtimes.
I was born and raised in the American south, (Georgia). And it makes me so happy to see other cultures enjoy biscuits & gravy. And you made it perfectly.😊
You could see the flaky layers in his biscuits. First time I've seen that in one of these videos. Used cream in his gravy too! My mouth was watering.
Texan here!
Watching you cook, every step of the way, I was going “Yep. Yep. Mm-hm.” The end result looked _perfect._
Easily the most faithful first real stab at Biscuits and Gravy I’ve seen on the Internet-you did great work!
Its true - I've seen a lot of people from the UK, Europe, Australia, NZ all try to make biscuits and gravy and this was the most faithful attempt yet. Those look perfect!
This Oklahoman agrees.
This Texan approves---I kinda think Aussies are just Texans from another town anyway.
@Jeremy C as does this one. 👍
Grew up in Texas on biscuits and gravy. His looked like what we ate at home. Lot's of others try and just don't get it right.
I'm SO proud of you! You didn't even cheat by using ready to cook biscuits - you made them from scratch! I'm from the southern US and we love our biscuits and gravy - sometimes have them for dinner with eggs and diced fried potatoes and onions. Just crumble the biscuits, add the rest topped with gravy and you have a bowl of delicious goodness! 10 STARS for you!
He might have but they don't have pre-made biscuits there
Did it better than a bunch of the women who have tried
Imagine his reaction to a good ol fashion BARBECUE!! I wonder what dish would finish him.... the mac-n-cheese or the pulled pork??? The Apple pie or the peach cobbler?? Ice Cream sandwich or Rocket popsicle??
You're making me hungry!!😊😊
@@wendyhodges7172 That's why I stopped writing... I made myself hungry!!!
My mom wanted to know what I wanted for my first “home cooked meal” when I got home from the Army in 1972. I told her biscuits and gravy, sliced and fried potatoes, sausage patty, corn, and strong brewed sweet tea. Meal fit for a king
I always love seeing non southerners reactions to real biscuits and gravy. They're the very definition of comfort food. Its impossible to not be happy while enjoying fresh and properly made biscuits and gravy.
Why do southern folk think biscuits & gravy are just a southern thing instead of an American thing? Cause of course they are Americ. 100%.
From New England to Sacramento and Miami to Anchorage. Biscuits and gravy.
@@OddThoughtz Quick internet search: Are biscuits and gravy an American thing?
The dish /originated in the South/ just after the Revolutionary War, before the United States was even a country. It was invented due to the fact that the supplies were scarce, and the breakfast meal had to be as inexpensive as possible.
It's curious, then, that my German ancestors came from Russia and Germany in the 1800's, and had these recipes already. Probably by a different name in uneducated German, but poverty, subsistence farming food by any name. Only staples in the kitchen were flour, salt, and from their cow, milk/cream, butter. If no sausage, threw a couple eggs in.
I am not arguing the origins of the dish. I will say my sweet mom was from the deep south. She moved to Ohio in the late 1940s, she was 14 years old. My sweet mom had NEVER experienced biscuits and sausage gravy UNTIL she moved to Ohio.
@@frybellevue All my relatives in Ohio used to make it. Many of them migrated up from the south for work around the turn of the last century.
THANK YOU! You are the first person I’ve watched make actual southern biscuits and gravy and not just some rock hard flatbread. These are legit biscuits, great job!
It's low key kind of amazing that cultures with the same basic ingredients can end up making dishes the other has never had before.
As a girl raised in the south, you don't realize how lucky you are until you see a non-southern react to our food.
That is so true.
You are so right!!! It always brings tears to my eyes. We’ve got something real special down here.. and it’s our food and hospitality!
Chicken and waffles is supposed to be a big deal, too. I dont know in what part of the US, but I think it's the south. I have yet to try that, but one day I might.
@@babblemakerThere is some debate about its origins in that combining chicken in some form with bread in some form has been tried in various places at various times, but I find myself agreeing with Adrian Miller that the dish as we understand it today is a Southern, and in particular a Black Southern, creation.
Miller’s book _Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time_ is definitely worth a read.
It's also why we are so fat. How can you resist?
Your biscuits looked perfect! I'm honestly impressed. Biscuits and Gravy belong in the American food hall of fame. The smile on your face when you had your first bite made my day. 😁
His happy was contagious in this one. The only thing happier than him at that moment were properly taken cared of puppies.
Same! And the way his eyes lit up ♥
I love seeing people react to proper biscuits and gravy for the first time. Even the best of us have to admit the initial visual isn't very appealing. The flavor in that first bite more than makes up for it though.
@@KhronicD I mean you CAN make it look pretty… but who the hell wants to waste time prettying it up after you make it lol no time to waste just gotta get to eating😂
Yeah, i feel like most non-Southerners wouldn't do as well. -Minnesotan
You know something is good when you first taste it and start to laugh. Glad you enjoyed it!
Finally someone does it right! This southern Mom is proud of you.
What a reaction!! Seems like a religious experience happening here. Quite honestly he did a great job making everything pretty authentically. Somebody should go down and to Australia and open a southern restaurant. ♥
Thought the same thing. True comfort food.
It's hard to find a good Southern cooking restaurant. I live in Texas and it's not easy. Luckily, I cook, but sometimes, you just would like to go out. One popular restaurant in my area which promotes itself as "country cooking" does not use milk or cream in their sausage gravy. WTH!
Having grown up near Detroit, Michigan and then moved to Oklahoma at 19, I still well remember my first taste of real biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were buttery and flaky, the gravy was creamy, peppery and chock full of sausage crumbles.
It WAS a religious experience!
@@efzapp5457 I am with you. Live in Texas and its hard to find true gravy. If you call it country gravy it must contain bacon/pork renderings AKA grease, butter, salt , pepper and WHOLE milk. The fat from whole milk makes a huge difference.
@@efzapp5457 HOW do they even consider themselves 'country cooking' if they DON'T use real milk? WHAT!? That makes less-than-zero sense.
I don't care where you grew up, proper biscuits and gravy will make you feel like you're sitting in your momma's kitchen, and your granny's giving you a hug at the same time!
Amen.
Now for the ultimate breakfast. Layer biscuits, crispy hash browns, scrambled eggs, then gravy on top. And a side of bacon. HEAVEN!!
That sounds so good. I'm going to try to make that

American Yankee with a Southern Soul Food loving Soul...I just learned three things I am doing wrong making my bisciuts and why they never turned out right. Thank you for doing your homework and having such a great network of viewers.
The magic of southern cooking will make a grown man cry.
I hope you really enjoyed it as much as you appeared to. Incidentally, you did amazingly well with the biscuits. They looked perfect and it’s not as easy as it looks.
I thought they might have been overworked because he rolled them and laminated like pastry dough but they turned out really nicely! Biscuits can be deceptively tricky to make well
@@aaronvanzile3824 The buttermilk lends a little more give to the dough. His technique was actually pretty spot on for buttermilk biscuits. I make mine the same way, it's the same process as making a rough puff but not nearly as involved. I used to have the worst time with biscuits before I adopted the technique. I was a Texan who couldn't make a biscuit, but made plenty of biscuit flavored hockey pucks; I was naïve to the wonder that is buttermilk.
This guy did his research which unfortunately a lot of people don't when they try something from another country. Props to this guy Glad you loved it!
This looks perfect! It annoys me when I see people NOT open the biscuit before they put the gravy on it ! You did a great job on this !!
As a Southern Girl, I wholeheartedly approve of this review. ♥️
This northern Yankee approves this also. Mom use to make a killer Biscuits and gravy. My SIL use to make a almost brown sausage gravy - something her memaw taught her.
Don't you dare speak for us Southern women. You must be outta your mind. A yankee approved it ffs smfh
@Bailey Krobot
Whoa there SassyPants! You need to read a bit more carefully before getting your britches in stitches, lol. I never eluded to speaking for all Southern women. And bless your heart, that “don’t you dare” makes you sound a teeny tiny bit highfalutin.
On a final note, I’m happy when people from other parts of the USA or around the world try Southern dishes. They are delicious, and being gracious is a big part of Southern culture and manners. I’m sure your mama taught you that. ♥️
@@Bayloy Haha - My cousins are Cajun / Parents live in TN. I just happen to live 'up north'. They all call me a 'dam Yankee'.
Top with a couple of over medium eggs with some hot sauce. Heaven!
as someone from Mississippi USA, I absolutely love watching people's faces light up when they try any of our food for the first time lol.
I´m so glad that you enjoyed it. Coming from East Texas biscuits and gravy were a staple in our house growing up and still is today in my house. For some reason it was always Dad´s job to make them on Saturday´s and he would always use spicy breakfast sausage. As kids we always wanted one biscuit covered in gravy and one warm biscuit right out of the oven with butter and homemade jelly. Yum!!!!
Thats funny it was one of the only things my dad cooked also. Now that im older i always make the gravy myself, guess its handed down from father to son.
Exactly the same here
I was a big kid... I'd eat 3-4 biscuits with gravy and another two with butter and homemade strawberry jam. Washed down with raw cow's milk. (Just ran through a fabric filter.)
Was your dad ever in the military? If so, that might be where he learned to make it.
@@CrochetIsLife54 Funny that you ask. Yes, dad was in for 25 years and I was a military brat for the first 18 years of my life.
You did great. The biscuits looked perfect as did the gravy. You made it exactly right lol. The first time! I've been making this for over 35 years and it's a regular for breakfast for us.
Your biscuits looked perfect. A lot of people struggle with homemade biscuits but you've got a knack for it. Well done honey! I'm impressed.
Thank you
May I, a Southern woman, offer a two-ingredient recipe for biscuits? Simply mix equal parts self-rising flour and heavy whipping cream. This is for anyone who has trouble with getting the butter in the biscuit dough properly mixed into the flour. I'm not saying that you had any problems with your technique whatsoever. I enjoyed the reaction you had. I saw it in your short video and made a comment to the effect of you're in love with them biscuits and gravy! Love and greetings from eastern North Carolina! P.S. my Aunt Vera was from Perth, W.A. Met and married my Uncle Wiley during WWII when he was stationed there in the US Navy. 😊❤ I look forward to traveling to your country when I retire.
So so so so proud of you for making the biscuits correctly!! So many people don't sift the flour, and it's just too important. The cold butter is key, and you did the folding perfectly. You are a GRAMMA!! You are honorarily one of us now. Thank you for making my day.
It was so good he lost his accent there for a sec and even sounded American. Now we know how it happens lol.
Good to see somebody make it the real way. Not boxed . Proper ingredients and served hot. Yummm
As a native to the southern USA, I watched you cook everything closely, you did good, glad you liked our little breakfast. Keep that recipe in the pocket for friends and family. The biscuits are multi purpose for breakfast, and the gravy, if you use instead of sausage, butter or just bacon grease, and make just a smooth gravy it goes great on mashed potatoes and fried chicken, and chicken fried streak.
Why stop at breakfast? XD If there's any left over, I'd eat it for dinner too!
If I were an Aussie, I would be so mad that I had gone my whole life eating dense ass scones and never had a buttery, flaky, heavenly biscuit with sausage gravy. lol I would be mad for months every time I remembered. haha. I am so glad you enjoyed it (understatement). You did a fantastic job making it.
Oh my goodness i have watched so many people from other countries try to make sausage gravy and biscuits and i always cringe but you sir have done it WELL! As a woman from South Carolina i applaud your skills and palate!!!
Thank you, and thank you for watching.
Now we know that our Old South cooking has finally reached our mates in Australia. It was heart warming to watch your reaction.
This makes me so happy. A couple notes on your biscuit making: The enemy of biscuits is stretched gluten, so use a flour made from soft winter wheat if available. Basically you want the opposite of what you'd want in a flour you'd use for making pizza. Also, never use a rolling pin to work the dough. Press it down with your hands, then fold. Repeat exactly five times. If you want your biscuits uniform, use a cold plate. Just anything to avoid stretching.
Loved your reaction! Being an old southern woman, I'm so glad you enjoyed one of our staples. Keep up the good work!
Love your reaction to a great southern staple. I was not raised in the south but my husband was, he introduced me to biscuits and gravy. I grew up having white or sausage gravy with rice, which is still a big comfort food for me.
Does he say oil, or o'le?
Born and raised in Florida and this was always a loved dish to me.
I grew up near the Texas coast in rice country, and Mom always had rice and sausage gravy
Tennessee boy here. I am so glad you enjoyed it so much. Even more glad you made it properly. I always enjoy watching people try this for the first time. Your reaction is among the best.
I've watched this video several times in the past year and I get such a kick out of his response to the flavors. It's so pleasing to watch someone enjoy their food so much! He did such a great job!
I truly enjoyed that smile after the first bite. You had me smiling all the way through !!! So glad you liked our biscuits and sausage gravy. We have a traditional big breakfast Christmas morning after we open presents. My son-in-law always makes his great sausage gravy to go with the biscuits and bacon, eggs and hash browns. Will be here for your Home Free reactions, I never miss a single one !!
Those were some stellar looking biscuits. You did such a great job on them. Biscuits are deceptively hard, looks easy, but there's a lot of ways to go wrong and you nailed it.
This is me any time I eat biscuits and gravy. It is one of my favorite breakfasts ever. Of course it can be a meal for lunch or dinner, but it is more eaten in the mornings.
Patrol, I hereby announce you with the title of Honorary southerner. You are welcome anytime to come and visit us in the south.
Being a Southerner (born and raised in Mississippi), biscuits and gravy have always been staples. Although I will admit that I have never been able to make biscuits like yours, I *will be trying your recipe. You may have taught this old dog a new trick! Glad you enjoyed them!
This is my 1st video to watch of you and as us Americans say "You hit it out of the park!" OMG You cooked those just like my Momma taught me! Great job!
Hi! Allen here. American by birth, Southern by the grace of God. We put pepper in that gravy, just so ya know. So if ya think it's good now....
As I looked at his plate I kept saying now just add the pepper!!
Hahaha. Your face the moment u tried the biskies. That's how I feel every time. It makes the world seem right when something so easy to make, tastes so good.
We need to get this man to America for some southern biscuits and gravy! He did a fantastic job though, I got a little misty eyed when he first bit into it, his emotions were so real, loved it.
We are trying but it's a bit expensive to get him here and I think he would have to stay 6 months. Not sure if his wofe would like that or not 😂
Now THAT looks like what Biscuits and Gravy should taste like. I like mine with a bit more pepper or Tabasco to give it a 'kick'. Well done mate. Be sure to share with friends and family. There is so much more for you to explore. Welcome to a southern breakfast.
I like mine with a little cayenne pepper
Definitely needed more pepper
Same here but I like to stick to green tobasco. Works great as a fry dip mixed with ketchup too
Agreed for sure. Can't go wrong with too much pepper, and a pinch of cayenne and a dash of garlic never hurt nobody neither 😆
I add a lot of pepper..but also a little (real) maple syrup.
Watching you make those biscuits made me think of watching my mom make them when I was a kid... I dont even think I can make them that well. Very well done man. Looks great, one of my childhood favorites.
So simple, but so good; the kind of meal that may not be the healthiest, but it sure does feed your soul. This has been one of my favorite breakfasts for longer than I can remember. It's so nice seeing someone else enjoy it for the first time- especially since you clearly loved it!
I have to say how impressed I am with your biscuits. I've seen so many non-American's make biscuits that don't even resemble biscuits. It's all in the layers... and the butter. You did such a good job & I have faith that what you made is authentic. I can tell by the look on your face. Lol! Loved this video (and the music).
Usually beginners overwork the biscuit dough.
Here in my home state of Indiana, in a city called Plainfield near where I live, there's a place called Oasis Diner. At this diner, they have a type of loaded biscuits and gravy.
From what I can recall, it is, from bottom to top: biscuits, gravy, eggs (I get mine scrambled), home fries (I substitute for hashbrowns), shredded cheddar cheese, and topped off with crumbled bacon.
It's a true feast on a plate. If you ever get around to trying it, I advise either bringing a friend or remembering you can take some of it home, because it can definitely fill one up.
My favorite dish. Native Texan here. First of all, the biscuits looked perfect. Next, you obviously had the perfect ratio of flour to milk because the gravy thickened up beautifully. I must admit my mouth was watering.
They were delicious.
Indiana guy here. Midwesterners love biscuits and gravy too! These looked proper, great job mate!😊
Your biscuits are absolutely perfect. Looks amazing. Gravy needs enough black pepper it almost overwhelms it. Great job.
his wife was eating it too and she doesn't like pepper. Have to keep the wife happy lol
Welcome to southern cooking my man. The smile with your first bite is why people eat biscuits and gravy. It is heart warming and great comfort food. It just makes you feel good. If you get it then you know. The look on your face says you know. Cheers m8 from the US.
My mom would make this when I was young. Some times she wouldn't wouldn't have sausage. She would use a spoonful or two of bacon drippings as the fat to thicken the gravy. In the summer when hot peppers were ripening, in our garden, she would dice a few of them and cook them with the gravy. Thin sliced dried beef also is top notch choice. P.S. Strawberry jam on a biscuit is out of this world!!!
Natural reaction to a good plate of biscuits and gravy. I'm approaching 60 and your reaction never changes to a plate of this manna from heaven.
This is almost the exact way that my mom makes biscuits and gravy. I was born and raised in Georgia, and this is the best example I have seen of a foreigner making our classic comfort breakfast. You absolutely nailed it. I am so glad you enjoyed it.
It was the first taste and look of absolute ecstasy for me. That's when you know you did it right.
This man just had a life changing moment. Hello from Texas
Was watching with great skepticism. I've seen a bunch of people on YT screw this up. When you laminated the dough, I knew you had found a good biscuit recipe. Well done.
I'm not from the south. But I made it a point to learn the proper way to make this years ago. Truly a simple, yet wonderful meal.
Your beard is 10/10 btw. Very impressive.
That was funny. After his 1st bite, the look on his face said everything there was to say. He doesn't need to say a word. LOL
Your reaction was pretty much the same as the reaction I've seen from people who really haven't tasted homemade biscuits and gravy. My Mom was from Oklahoma and I was raised on her Southern style cooking. She made biscuits and gravy every weekend. Her biscuits were so good - unlike any I ever had before. She would make gravy from pretty much any meat drippings - fried ham, bacon, sausage patties - even pork chops. I've had friends visit from England, Iowa, New Hampshire, etc... plus a brother-in-law and sister-in-law from families who didn't cook this way. They all fell in love with Mom's biscuits and gravy. My friend from England said it was the best food she had on her trip to the US.
Watching you try the biscuits n gravy I could see the southern hidden inside you coming out as that meal touched your soul!
When the biscuits came out of the oven looking like biscuits, and not scones, I smiled as you had nailed them perfectly. When you actually split them in half, I knew someone had told you how to eat them properly. As soon as you took the first bite, and couldn't say a word, it was proof that you had made everything to perfection. Now you have to introduce your friends and family to the joy you have discovered. Probably the greatest American breakfast food that can be eaten any time of the time, ever invented. Next step: Chicken and Dumplings.
Thank you Lyle.
See, not every American food is a crazy idea. This is definitely a staple in my family. Yumyum
Maybe it's a regional thing, but where I grew up, biscuits were made by folding them as little as possible after adding all the ingredients. We didn't go for flaky layers but pillowy soft buttery goodness. Still, those biscuits did look pretty dang good!
See though that's the nifty trick to know...don't fold for pillowy biscuits, fold for flaky ones! If you leave the biscuit rolled out, mix butter, sugar and cinnamon together you can spread that on the rolled out biscuit dough rolling like a pinwheel. Slice and bake for amazing cinnamon rolls...topping can be any variation that you like and brown sugar for more sticky bun type thing. Cooking fundamentals can be so fun!
Never made gravy with butter, we always used oil, but I'm sure the butter was good!
I hate the biscuits that taste like cake. The buttery layered biscuits are a million times tastier.
Very well done!!...for those who do not have buttermilk, just add a teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to one cup of milk and let it set for 5 minutes and it will be just like using buttermilk.
Being from Alabama, let me just say I'm very happy to know that you enjoyed this as much as we of the Southern states do. Have a great day!! ❤❤❤
First exposure to it for me was when I was in basic training in Ft. Benning. Now I know it probably wasn't as good as a GOOD B&G, but holy hell was it amazing to me.

Bravo! Someone not from the southern US finally got it right! I was skeptical of this video wondering how badly the Australian was going to butcher the process but you got it right and I am so happy to see it. Very happy surprise. Now you finally understand why we love it so much. Biscuits and gravy are simple, ugly, and divine.
My grandma and mom and all my aunties could make amazing biscuits. Mine turn out like hockey pucks. I'm so jealous that your first try came out so beautifully.
Sounds like you might be overworking the dough.
I like it with bacon sometimes too instead of sausage.
Growing up when we didn't have a lot of money mom would take potatoes and dice them up and toss them with some flour and salt and pepper and fry them. When the potatoes were brown she would put them on a paper towel and use the grease from the fried potatoes to make gravy. Scrambled or fried eggs are good as a side dish.
I guess what I love about Southern food, is that it can be simple to make, and is oh so good. Feels like a hug.
We'll make a southerner out if you yet. We grew up on that. Now you need to try fried catfish and hush puppies.
and fried okra 😋👍
Cheese grits.
That God damed church potluck best baked beans casserole with ground beef, bacon and brown sugar in it! Holy cow I used to hide under the potluck table and sneak spoons of it. 😂
This Canadian needs to show up at YOUR house to try all those wonderful things.
All the dishes listed are great southern recipes.. as a northerner, I beg to be allowed to frequently steal them and call them mine.! Had all but the catfish and hush puppies.. Catfish yes.. but not the hushpuppies. sounds delicious
I am IMPRESSED. You made them PERFECTLY.
Biscuits and gravy on my favorite breakfast food ever. I am from Texas but I live in South Carolina and they do know how to make it.
Ahh, just warms my heart to watch someone experiencing the bliss of comfort food. It’s like being a little child again, being wrapped up in your favorite blanket on a chilly day, while your mother holds you on her lap, rocking you in a rocking chair.
Isn’t it funny how this is such a thing now, watching people eat food you personally love? If we could go back in time decades ago and tell ourselves we’d watch videos of cats, and people trying food. Lol Oh well, I still love it!
Ha! American classic at it's best. Biscuits and gravy...one of the simplest but yummiest brunches we make. Looks like that will become a regular on the table!! Glad you enjoyed it. I think the only thing really changes amongst different folks that make it is the amount of heat/pepper you want in your gravy and which type of biscuits get made.
As an American…..that first bite reaction made me emotional. I wish I can taste that for the first time again!
I grew up in a family of seven. There was always some kind of bread with every meal to stretch it. Biscuits featured several times a week, though my mom skipped the fancy rolling out and cutting, and just made drop biscuits with the same recipe. You can also make the biscuits slightly sweeter and top with strawberries and whipped cream for a simple but delicious dessert.
Biscuits and gravy was a frequent Saturday breakfast, along with scrambled eggs, and hash browns. It wasn't uncommon for me to top the eggs with the sausage gravy and reserve the biscuits for "dessert" with butter and jam.
For something so simple, biscuits & gravy are amazing
As an American from Texas, I forget how lucky I am for the food I'm surrounded by. First reaction was priceless!
My parents are from Georgia and West Virginia so seeing people trying stuff like Biscuits and Gravy for the first time is always enjoyable. Now if only he had some southern fried chicken or chicken fried steak to go with it.
Nothing better. From Missouri.
Hell Yea! You done a great Job! Nothing better than Biscuits and Gravy!
As a southern Auntie, I am soo Happy y’all got this right!!! Bit of tweaking here n there but it’s darn near perfect! Just add some butter on top them biscuits when yall take them out of the oven. Now I use a tad bit of fat in my biscuits when it’s real cold out. Seams too just warm up the place. Any way, just so happy someone outside the south got it right!
YES!!! Now that’s biscuits and gravy!!! It looks like you know your way around a kitchen!! So glad you got to try the real thing!!! ❤❤
Bravo!! You nailed it. Those biscuits were perfect, as well as the gravy. Now, take one of those beautiful biscuits and top it with butter and jam and get ready for for another treat. You're ready for a 'foodie' trip with Tim Foust!
You have to realize that the southern U.S. was mostly settled by the Scot - Irish and a lot of our food reflects that heritage.
Couldn’t tell if you liked it!😂😂😂Seriously, I’m a Southerner and grew up on a farm so I have had this all my life and it’s fun to see someone experiencing it for the first time. But my favorite was a hot homemade biscuit with homemade butter and blackstrap molasses with a piping hot cup of coffee.
Give me a warm biscuit sandwich with a slice of pan fried country ham with a dead egg and a piece of white brick cheese. Add a glass of sweet tea and you've got my childhood
Loved the reaction. Southern style apples are also wonderful on biscuits. I use canned apples and add sugar and cinnamon to them and cook them until the liquid thickens. Also butter and jelly, honey butter or molasses and butter are great.
My family made something similar with apricots. Called it stewed apricots. Nothing better on a biscuit!
