@@yournewzealandfamily Some thing else you can do to Grilled cheese is put a little garlic salt and pepper on the butter before it goes into the pan. Be careful with the salt though because the cheese has salt in it.
The absolute gold standard for tomato soup is Campbell ‘s condensed tomato soup. Add whole milk instead of water for a creamy ,rich , soup. On a cold day, this sandwich/ soup combo can’t be beat!

As a little girl growing up in New England, on cold and snowy days, after playing outside for hours, Mom would serve us grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup for lunch. So warming, hearty and delicious. What a childhood memory!

It is a definite cold weather type "warm your body and soul" food that probably isn't appreciated as much in places that don't get snow/cold/winter weather. I'm american and never heard of this. Sounds good. But I have always liked a cold bologna and cheese sandwich. That I eat by dipping ans soaking in the soup that is to hot to eat. Also my mom didn't have parents for most of her life.. so. Things get lost.

I still make her recipes, people would always ask her to bring potato salad to the reunions. She gave the recipe to me, but her sauerkraut and dumplings were to die for. A grilled cheese sandwich isn't toasted. The bread is coated with butter or some other spreadable fat, then grilled on a flat surface. Cheese on toast is different.

As a Wisconsinite, Wisconsin being the Dairy State, you can never have too much cheese on anything ❤ Also, the United States is comprised of many different cultural regions, so the South will make foods differently from the Midwest, New England, and the West Coast. Some restaurants make grilled cheese with pickles, some don't. Always look for little Family owned diners in smaller towns. They tend to have the most "home cooked" flavors. There are variations of the grilled sandwich called "Melts", which are all worth trying!
Wisconsinite here as well. I love anything with cheese. LOL! New Zealand Family if you make it to Wisconsin during your travels you have to go to Culver's and get the Sour Dough Melt and make it a double.

Tomato soup made with water is no tomato soup at all. Try throwing a slice of lunch meat like ham, turkey or chicken in there with the cheese. Using mayo instead of butter is also good.
I remember having one of those sandwich makers when I was kid-that's what I used when I wanted a grilled cheese, but couldn't use the stove. I also remember making faux apple pies in mine-white bread, with cinnamon sugar butter and apple pie filling. Grilled cheese with ham or turkey added is also popular. You can also add fun things to your tomato soup-salsa, goldfish crackers, etc.

Our tomato soup is creamy and a lot thicker. It’s not watery so it coats the sandwich and doesn’t make it soggy. I’m so glad you loved it. It’s so easy and just delicious. We put smoked ham or smoked turkey and or pepperoni on ours too sometimes

Best way to make a grilled cheese is to melt enough butter in the pan to coat the bread on one side. Putting the butter on the bread rips the bread most of the time so melting it in the pan then putting the bread in the pan is better. Move the bread around till you soak the butter up, then slightly brown the bread on one side. flip the bread and slightly brown it on the unbuttered side and flip the bread over and put the cheese in. Don't have the heat up too high so the bread doesn't burn before the cheese melts. Flip it a few times till the bread is toasted like you like it then serve. If you use Velvetta cheese you cut from the block cook it on a little lower heat and add a small amount of butter while cooking to help "steam" the bread and melt the cheese a little better. Tomato soup made with milk not water and the sandwich is the best quick hot meal you can make.
YES - grilled cheese and tomato soup is a standard in our home. We always use milk instead of water so it is thicker/creamier. I usually just use the Velveeta slices but sometimes add provolone or another white cheese. And the thicker bread ("Texas Toast") is a game-changer. LOTS of butter on the outside.
You can always skip adding water or milk for a thicker soup, it’s what I do for gravy for meatloaf. (Or just add very little water or milk, it’s all preference)

My mom always used Velveeta, much creamier. Additives I like are Mustard, Bread&Butter Pickles, slice of onion, Bacon, or Ham slices ( individually, not all at once). Need to try Jalapeños! In a pinch? Try toasting bread in a toaster, put slice of cheese between, and microwave 10-15 seconds. Grab the Sandwich and head out the door. Great breakfast while driving to work (without butter, no greasy steering wheel!). Sorry, don't like Tomato soup, but GC great with any soup! And, I'll have my baked beans, on the side, please.

I work in a deli. My boss says that American cheese is made from a cheddar curd (uncured, unpressed), mixed with a slurry of other ingredients, especially salt, and processed till it's smooth, and formed.
In our house grilled cheese is a favorite. I eat mine with mustard. Then again I also eat baked beans with mustard. So, I can see where they would mix well. We also eat tuna melts here. That's Tina fish on a grilled cheese sandwich, ham and cheese melts all made the same way. We also have grilled cheese makers like your toasty maker. Grilled cheese sandwiches and Campbell's Tomato Soup goes back to kid's lunches in the 1920s and 30s. It was a relatively cheap and filling meal for 3 or 4 people. My mom always made ours with Miracle Whip because that is what her mom could afford. You should try one with mayo for that little bit of tang. Like many may have done, you can make one and split it four ways.
You can turn a grill Cheese into a Patty Melt, a Tuna Melt and a Turkey Melt. Instead of white bread, you use Rye bread for all three. For the Patty Melt, it basically a hamburger on a grill cheese typically with Swiss cheese and sautéed onions (but some people have been known to use American cheese or Cheddar). A Tuna Melt is a grilled cheese with Tuna Salad and American Cheese. And the Turkey Melt is a grilled cheese with grilled Turkey slices, Tomatoes and American Cheese. Although, i sometimes add bacon.
So, a couple of tips to ELEVATE the American grilled Cheese: Toast BOTH sides of the bread with butter. Add some heavy cream or full fat milk to you tomato soup to make a bisque. BEST DIPPING EXPERIENCE EVER! We traditionally use thinner bread with our grilled cheese. That being said, thicker cuts tend to be heartier. SOURDOUGH BREAD! NOTHING BETTER! Yup. Tomato soup and grilled cheese go hand in hand. Also, as a kid in the 70s, my personal favorite was a toasted bologna sandwich and bean and bacon soup (Campbell’s brand).
Wasn't too fond of toasted bologna sandwiches but I did love my bologna sandwiches either with mayo or mustard. And oh yeah bean soup is the bomb... But I also love every other soup out there

There’s actually really good powdered soup . I first bought it from of all places a hardware store . But I’ve seen it since at a county market . The one I went crazy for was a chicken tortilla soup . Really good

My family cooks the bread open face with cheese first , brown up ham slices in a separate pan , when the cheese is melting , we add the browned ham ..... good !
When I make grilled cheese, I butter both sides. Toast one side of each slice, flip it, then add the cheese to one and put the other bread on top. Grilling both sides of the bread just adds a little extra crunch! And using mayo is amazing. Since it's really just egg and oil, you're basically coating your grilled cheese with fried eggs. Some nice additions...Ham, Bacon, Philly Steak, slice of tomato, diced onion, or sliced jalapenos.
Something I noticed in this video, they seem to be cooking them on too low of heat. It should be about the same temp of pan as what you use to fry eggs- that way the butter on the outside will crisp the bread a little, instead of making it soggy.

When I was eleven or twelve, grilled cheese sandwich was the first thing I "cooked" that my dad complemented me on. The last time I stayed with my parents as an adult (in late pregnancy cause my hubby was out of town) my dad requested I make him some grilled cheese and still says my grilled cheese sandwiches are better than mom's! LOL! Obviously there were other things I've cooked and shared with them over the years but grilled cheese was a special memory for us.

I’m an American and I use a press to make my grilled cheese sandwiches too. I like to use different kinds of cheese and add mayonnaise and ham sometimes. I do use a pan if I’m only making one sandwich. I have never dipped my sandwich in tomato soup but I do have my soup on the side…but that’s just me. Have you tried a grilled tuna and cheese sandwich? Just mix tuna, mayo and relish together, add your cheese of choice and cook it like you did the toastie. It's so good. Pair it with a cream of mushroom soup and just feel wonderful for the rest of the day.
While the comments below provide a lot of great variations, the traditional version is VERY simple. In order for an American grilled cheese sandwich and a mug of tomato soup to be at it's absolute best, the following specifics should be honored: #1 the bread needs to be plain white Wonder Bread, 2) the cheese MUST be Kraft American Singles (each sliced is wrapped in plastic), 3) the sandwiches must be grilled to the point of almost burned so the exterior is VERY crunchy, 4) the soup must be Campbell's Condensed Tomato Soup ... but DON'T thin it down ... just heat it up, fresh out of the can, so it is double thick, and 5) serve it on a chilly, rainy Autumn afternoon! Now THAT's a traditional American experience!!
Well, I personally like diluting it with milk, but I guess that's mostly because it doubles the soup without making it watery. Never tried just heating it up as is. Maybe next time, now that I'm the only one I'm feeding.

I can already tell there's gonna be people asking you to try ham and cheese, but I for one ABSOLUTELY recommend trying a tuna melt! It's the same as a grilled cheese, but with tuna salad in the middle before grilling so the cheese wraps around it. It's my comfort sandwich, from when I was a kid and my mom would make them.
Then there's the patty melt: rye bread instead of white, Swiss cheese instead of Cheddar or American (1 slice on each slice of bread), & a cooked hamburger patty in the middle.
We are a family of 5. Grilled cheese and soup is a common staple in our home. The trick is to use a large flat top electric griddle that will fit about 6 sandwiches at once to make it much easier to do as a family meal. Stove top method is usually used for 1 maybe 2 people. After watching your video I just added this to the grocery list. :)
You could make your grilled cheese in your toasty press, you don't have to make them in a pan on the stove. We have small grills that we sometimes use to make our grilled cheese like the one you used for the toasty. Colby, Monterey Jack, and Cheddar cheese together is my favorite blend for a grilled cheese.
My Mom and my ex-wife both used to make some of the best grilled cheese sandwiches, glad you enjoyed American cheese for the first time! But, what I really love is the neighbors behind you aimlessly wandering around their garden starting at around 12:00, not sure what they were looking at, but, hopefully they got it done!

When I worked at Village Inn, a breakfast restaurant like Denny's, we had a sandwich called the Grown Up Grilled Cheese. You add Colby Jack and a slice of American, 2 strips of bacons, some diced onions and a thin slice of tomato, with some mustard on the bread and grilled with liquid butter. This is all grilled together, so the tomato is hot as well, which gives the sandwich a mustard/ketchup flavor to it. That thing is delicious.

My husband is from Utah and I'm from Missouri, and we both grew up eating grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. We've raised our kids on it too. We still enjoy it, especially during our cold months which we've entered. We live on a farm and during the winter when my husband is outside with our livestock, I'll fix this for our lunch and we'll eat it sitting on the couch in front of a fire in the fireplace. However, we do garden so we make our soups from scratch. That toastie maker is versatile. It reminds me of the cast iron sandwich maker we would use to make hobo pies while camping during Michigan summers. Can do everything from plain grilled cheese, ham & cheese, sausage egg & cheese, pizza, blueberry pie, cherry pie, nutella peanut butter & banana pie. So many sweet & savory options.

@@allysonchen4286 A slice of tomato in the sandwich is a legit option. The best way to do this is to make sure you got cheese on both slices before you seal the sandwich shut. That way the tomato doesn't soggy up the toast.
There is a restaurant here in Ohio called “Melt: Bar and Grilled.” They specialize in different grilled cheese sandwiches, even dessert types. It’s worth looking at their menu online for ideas. Unfortunately, they originated around Cleveland and have a few locations here in Columbus, but I believe that’s as far as they have gone.

Love grilled cheese - I take it up a notch by sprinkling garlic salt on the butter on the outside of the sandwich so it's kinda like a garlic bread grilled cheese. Adds another dimension to an already classic sandwich. Also a Brie, fig jelly, and grilled onion grilled cheese sandwich is a total gourmet way to go if you want to get fancy.
Grilled cheese sandwich is what I had for dinner tonight. It is one of our comfort foods. I live in Wisconsin and we make grilled cheese from a variety of cheeses. Most popular is American, but it is also good with Swiss, Cheddar, Pepperjack etc. Sometimes we also combine different kinds. We never put beans on our grilled cheese. I shredd sharp chdr, smoke gouda, creamy havarty, mozzarella and cream chesse and form it in a big log rolled in bits of cooked bacon bits, kids absolutely love it and my husband loves slices of avocado in his.
Grilled cheese with tomato soup is an absolute classic. One cheese that I grew partial to using was pepper jack. For me it just adds a little something that makes it more savory and goes so well with soup. And cooking grilled cheese with a big juicy slice of tomato is great as well. You can add so many random things to it because it's so versatile. Everyone has their own version and it just seems like you'll never try 2 grilled cheeses that taste the same.
Dad's favorite/favourite is Provolone, Muenster, and Swiss cheese. He gave your multicheese version a big thumbs up. Dad wanted me to give Atlanta his recipe for Cheeseburger Garlic Bread. Brown 2 lbs groundbeef to your liking. While it browns, slice a whole loaf of Italian or French bread thru the middle lengthwise and open. Example would be like they ate shown in "Subway" ads. May use a Bagette if you prefer. Butter the bread and add Garlic or Garlic Powder to the bread, then brown in oven. Once browned, add browned groundbeef, your favorite/favourite cheese, and any other toppings you like to your "burger". Return to oven until the cheese melts, and other toppings(if any) begin to brown. Brown until it is to your liking and enjoy.

Put some nice thick cut ham in there too! Yum! Edit: I usually put the inside (un-buttered side of the grilled cheese), on the grill first to heat it and just lightly toast it. Then I flip it over to the bread side and add the cheese. So the cheese melts better. Then join them together whenever (you can always flip from side to side).
My mom would put Mayo on the bread sometimes. It was delicious when she made it. I haven't been able to figure out the right amount. Mine taste okay, but nothing compared to my moms.
Watching your son eat beans straight from the can without even heating them had me 😂. I like baked beans occasionally for a change, & when I go camping with friends we always have a night with beans as one of the main dishes. Also it brings back memories of eating "beanie weenies" as a kid. Do you have those? It's just baked beans with hot dogs cut up in them, but a favorite for a lot of families I knew growing up, especially in lower income houses. Baked beans were an inexpensive way to fill the kids up with protein, vitamins & fiber & most kids like them so win-win!

Using those types of beans is a British tradition. Lots of bean types used in the US, but not on bread or for breakfast like the English do. The Commonwealth countries got a lot of the British food traditions, but the US did not. The Germans, Italians, and Eastern Europeans had a huge influence on American food early on. .
A favorite meal for sure. Other good dips for the sandwich can be chili, salsa, bbq sauce, and ketchup. My preference is to make the tomato soup with warm milk. It gives it a creamier texture. Also the sandwich can also be made in your toastie maker. 😊
I think grilled cheese sandwiches was the first thing I learned to cook for myself that wasn’t frozen or prepackaged. It makes for a nice and easy snack that even kids can make for themselves once taught. I used to make them for myself after school starting around 10 years old. When I was in high school from ages 14-17 I’d come home from school and either make 2 grilled cheese sandwiches or two turkey sandwiches nearly every day, and then I’d also have dinner about 3.5-4 hours later.
I had swim practice every morning from 5 - 6:30 and again in the evening from 6 - 8. I cooked myself a couple of burgers right after school (starting around age 12) to carry me over until I ate dinner after evening practice. If there were no burgers around, it was grilled cheese for sure.

One suggestion I would give is to adjust the amount of water in the soup to make it a little thicker. That will allow for better dipping. I have also found that a homemade grilled cheese is always better than what you get in a restaurant. Love the videos!

This is one of my favorite meals which tells everyone that, yes, I grew up poor. A can of soup was .39 cents, bread was .17 cents. I forget what the cheese, mayo, and butter was back then. When I wasn't sure what to make for dinner or was in a hurry I would make this meal for my boys. I think the last time I made it was November 2022. The boys love it as well. I never use American cheese. We use sharp cheddar. I add spices to the tomato soup and garlic to the grilled cheese.
You dont have to be poor to respect the grilled cheese haha. The wife makes me cook a couple times a week and this is definitely my go to at least once. I like to mix it up a bit with bacon, different cheeses or breads, or some tomato and lettuce. It never gets old
@@bradbutcher8762 I tend to prefer to keep my grilled cheese sandwiches simple. Lots of butter, slowly toasted medium dark... And American or Colby Jack cheese (or both!). The elegance of a grilled cheese sandwich is in its simplicity! When I want something fancier, I'll spruce up my egg sandwiches... American cheese (of course), hot sauce, tomato, avocado... etc!
We also use the Toastie makers for grilled cheeses. By the way you can also make very quick pepperoni sandwiches in those words a little mozzarella a teaspoon of pizza sauce and a good healthy handful of mozzarella with the pepperoni. Just make sure you butter your bread before you put them in the toaster maker,😊
Tomato soup and grilled cheese is a comfort food. Simple, but so satisfying. There is also a restaurant fairly close to us called The Wheel, where all they serve is custom made grilled cheese sandwiches. You pick the bread, the cheese, any meat you may want, and toppings. Sooooo good! If you are ever in Pennsylvania, it's in Pottsville. Just a small little place on a a corner, but worth it!!
Pro tip: Mix some shaved Parmesan cheese in with the butter you use on the bread and, it will make a crispy crunchy cheesy crust! I do this all the time, you can also add a few Bay leaves in your tomato soup while cooking.
During the summer, I slice a tomato to grill into my grilled cheese. I use White American cheese w/ either Colby Jack or a mild cheddar. My favorite all time sandwich is grilled white American cheese w/ dill pickle slices between the two pieces of cheese on rye bread w/ a touch of yellow mustard and mayo mixed on the inside pieces of bread. Butter the outside of the bread and fry like any other grilled cheese. I hope y'all enjoy your time in the states! Safe travels!
We call that a sandwich maker here, my grandparents had them and I had one for my children in the 1990’s. I use to make them ham and cheese, pizza and other varieties as well. We liked them too. I love sweet Italian Basil in my soup 😊

It is a definite cold weather type "warm your body and soul" food that probably isn't appreciated as much in places that don't get snow/cold/winter weather. Mom would serve grilled cheese and tomato soup alot to her brood of 8 children when it got nasty outside here on our North Central Montana farm. Campbell's canned soup was the norm and we would have a 5 lb brick of American Cheese that we would take slices from. Easy, affordable, nutritious, and tasty meal for alot of families like mine.
I'm american and never heard of this. Sounds good. But I have always liked a cold bologna and cheese sandwich. That I eat by dipping ans soaking in the soup that is to hot to eat. Also my mom didn't have parents for most of her life.. so. Things get lost.

Some restaurants make grilled cheese with pickles, some don't. Always look for little Family owned diners in smaller towns. They tend to have the most "home cooked" flavors. There are variations of the grilled sandwich called "Melts", which are all worth trying!

Best way to make a grilled cheese is to melt enough butter in the pan to coat the bread on one side. Putting the butter on the bread rips the bread most of the time so melting it in the pan then putting the bread in the pan is better. Move the bread around till you soak the butter up, then slightly brown the bread on one side. flip the bread and slightly brown it on the unbuttered side and flip the bread over and put the cheese in. Don't have the heat up too high so the bread doesn't burn before the cheese melts. Flip it a few times till the bread is toasted like you like it then serve. If you use Velvetta cheese you cut from the block cook it on a little lower heat and add a small amount of butter while cooking to help "steam" the bread and melt the cheese a little better. Tomato soup made with milk not water and the sandwich is the best quick hot meal you can make.

My favorite version of a Grilled Cheese sandwich is this: Sourdough Bread, Bacon, and Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese.
YES - grilled cheese and tomato soup is a standard in our home. We always use milk instead of water so it is thicker/creamier. I usually just use the Velveeta slices but sometimes add provolone or another white cheese. And the thicker bread ("Texas Toast") is a game-changer. LOTS of butter on the outside.
You can always skip adding water or milk for a thicker soup, it’s what I do for gravy for meatloaf. (Or just add very little water or milk, it’s all preference)

My mom always used Velveeta, much creamier. Additives I like are Mustard, Bread&Butter Pickles, slice of onion, Bacon, or Ham slices ( individually, not all at once). Need to try Jalapeños! In a pinch? Try toasting bread in a toaster, put slice of cheese between, and microwave 10-15 seconds. Grab the Sandwich and head out the door. Great breakfast while driving to work (without butter, no greasy steering wheel!). Sorry, don't like Tomato soup, but GC great with any soup! And, I'll have my baked beans, on the side, please.

I work in a deli. My boss says that American cheese is made from a cheddar curd (uncured, unpressed), mixed with a slurry of other ingredients, especially salt, and processed till it's smooth, and formed.

In our house grilled cheese is a favorite. I eat mine with mustard. Then again I also eat baked beans with mustard. So, I can see where they would mix well. We also eat tuna melts here. That's Tina fish on a grilled cheese sandwich, ham and cheese melts all made the same way. We also have grilled cheese makers like your toasty maker. It's fun watching your family enjoy these things 😂
Grilled cheese sandwiches and Campbell's Tomato Soup goes back to kid's lunches in the 1920s and 30s. It was a relatively cheap and filling meal for 3 or 4 people. My mom always made ours with Miracle Whip because that is what her mom could afford. You should try one with mayo for that little bit of tang. Like many may have done, you can make one and split it four ways.
You can turn a grill Cheese into a Patty Melt, a Tuna Melt and a Turkey Melt. Instead of white bread, you use Rye bread for all three. For the Patty Melt, it basically a hamburger on a grill cheese typically with Swiss cheese and sautéed onions (but some people have been known to use American cheese or Cheddar). A Tuna Melt is a grilled cheese with Tuna Salad and American Cheese. And the Turkey Melt is a grilled cheese with grilled Turkey slices, Tomatoes and American Cheese. Although, i sometimes add bacon.
So, a couple of tips to ELEVATE the American grilled Cheese:
Toast BOTH sides of the bread with butter.
Add some heavy cream or full fat milk to you tomato soup to make a bisque. BEST DIPPING EXPERIENCE EVER!
We traditionally use thinner bread with our grilled cheese. That being said, thicker cuts tend to be heartier.
SOURDOUGH BREAD! NOTHING BETTER!

When I make grilled cheese, I butter both sides. Toast one side of each slice, flip it, then add the cheese to one and put the other bread on top. Grilling both sides of the bread just adds a little extra crunch! And using mayo is amazing. Since it's really just egg and oil, you're basically coating your grilled cheese with fried eggs. Some nice additions...Ham, Bacon, Philly Steak, slice of tomato, diced onion, or sliced jalapenos.
Something I noticed in this video, they seem to be cooking them on too low of heat. It should be about the same temp of pan as what you use to fry eggs- that way the butter on the outside will crisp the bread a little, instead of making it soggy.

When I was eleven or twelve, grilled cheese sandwich was the first thing I "cooked" that my dad complemented me on. The last time I stayed with my parents as an adult (in late pregnancy cause my hubby was out of town) my dad requested I make him some grilled cheese and still says my grilled cheese sandwiches are better than mom's! LOL! Obviously there were other things I've cooked and shared with them over the years but grilled cheese was a special memory for us.
Chicken noodle soup is an amazing dip as well. I can house like 3 sandwiches when dipped. Yum!
The classic Grilled cheese and cream of tomato soup is a staple still at our table. We use milk instead of water to make the soup. We've done tons of varieties of Grilled cheese sandwiches but always end up going back to just white bread, butter and American cheese.

I’m an American and I use a press to make my grilled cheese sandwiches too. I like to use different kinds of cheese and add mayonnaise and ham sometimes. I do use a pan if I’m only making one sandwich. I have never dipped my sandwich in tomato soup but I do have my soup on the side…but that’s just me. My Late Uncle Charlie use to use Pepper Jack Cheese.

While the comments below provide a lot of great variations, the traditional version is VERY simple. In order for an American grilled cheese sandwich and a mug of tomato soup to be at it's absolute best, the following specifics should be honored: #1 the bread needs to be plain white Wonder Bread, 2) the cheese MUST be Kraft American Singles (each sliced is wrapped in plastic), 3) the sandwiches must be grilled to the point of almost burned so the exterior is VERY crunchy, 4) the soup must be Campbell's Condensed Tomato Soup ... but DON'T thin it down ... just heat it up, fresh out of the can, so it is double thick, and 5) serve it on a chilly, rainy Autumn afternoon! Now THAT's a traditional American experience!!

Well, I personally like diluting it with milk, but I guess that's mostly because it doubles the soup without making it watery. Never tried just heating it up as is. Maybe next time, now that I'm the only one I'm feeding.
We put mayo on the outside. It turns toasted brown, and you would never know we didn’t use butter

I can already tell there's gonna be people asking you to try ham and cheese, but I for one ABSOLUTELY recommend trying a tuna melt! It's the same as a grilled cheese, but with tuna salad in the middle before grilling so the cheese wraps around it. It's my comfort sandwich, from when I was a kid and my mom would make them.
My mom would make them open face in the oven. We'd have to eat it with a fork! 😆 I haven't had that in so long . . . Maybe today for lunch! 👍

We are a family of 5. Grilled cheese and soup is a common staple in our home. The trick is to use a large flat top electric griddle that will fit about 6 sandwiches at once to make it much easier to do as a family meal. Stove top method is usually used for 1 maybe 2 people. After watching your video I just added this to the grocery list. :)
try making them in the oven, under the broiler. the sandwich maintains its shape, and the bread won't be greasy
Yeah we didn't have a large griddle so we did it in the oven on broil. it was quick but we had to watch it very close so they wouldn't burn.
You could make your grilled cheese in your toasty press, you don't have to make them in a pan on the stove. We have small grills that we sometimes use to make our grilled cheese like the one you used for the toasty. Colby, Monterey Jack, and Cheddar cheese together is my favorite blend for a grilled cheese.
My Mom and my ex-wife both used to make some of the best grilled cheese sandwiches, glad you enjoyed American cheese for the first time! Using mayo on the bread instead of butter is great too. It gives it a little different flavor, but you have to watch it close because it cooks a little faster.
When I worked at Village Inn, a breakfast restaurant like Denny's, we had a sandwich called the Grown Up Grilled Cheese.
You add Colby Jack and a slice of American, 2 strips of bacons, some diced onions and a thin slice of tomato, with some mustard on the bread and grilled with liquid butter.
This is all grilled together, so the tomato is hot as well, which gives the sandwich a mustard/ketchup flavor to it.
That thing is delicious.

My husband is from Utah and I'm from Missouri, and we both grew up eating grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. We've raised our kids on it too. We still enjoy it, especially during our cold months which we've entered. We live on a farm and during the winter when my husband is outside with our livestock, I'll fix this for our lunch and we'll eat it sitting on the couch in front of a fire in the fireplace. However, we do garden so we make our soups from scratch. I've never heard of putting baked beans inside a sandwich before, but for variety we will eat grilled cheese sandwiches with a slice of ham inside too. Grilled ham and cheese sandwiches!

That toastie maker is versatile. It reminds me of the cast iron sandwich maker we would use to make hobo pies while camping during Michigan summers. Can do everything from plain grilled cheese, ham & cheese, sausage egg & cheese, pizza, blueberry pie, cherry pie, nutella peanut butter & banana pie. So many sweet & savory options.
Our version in the 90s here in the US was called the Snackmaster-I would make french toast stuffed with pudding and jelly - so freaking good

Remember that was growing up they would actually take slices of tomato after they would you know make grilled cheese and actually you know peel it open and put a slice of tomato in there I guess it was kind of similar but I don't know I don't really like tomato that much so

The best way to do this is to make sure you got cheese on both slices before you seal the sandwich shut. That way the tomato doesn't soggy up the toast.
There is a restaurant here in Ohio called “Melt: Bar and Grilled.” They specialize in different grilled cheese sandwiches, even dessert types. It’s worth looking at their menu online for ideas. Unfortunately, they originated around Cleveland and have a few locations here in Columbus, but I believe that’s as far as they have gone.

Love grilled cheese - I take it up a notch by sprinkling garlic salt on the butter on the outside of the sandwich so it's kinda like a garlic bread grilled cheese. Adds another dimension to an already classic sandwich. Also a Brie, fig jelly, and grilled onion grilled cheese sandwich is a total gourmet way to go if you want to get fancy.
I use confit or roasted garlic and do the same.

Grilled cheese sandwich is what I had for dinner tonight. It is one of our comfort foods. I live in Wisconsin and we make grilled cheese from a variety of cheeses. Most popular is American, but it is also good with Swiss, Cheddar, Pepperjack etc. Sometimes we also combine different kinds. We never put beans on our grilled cheese. I am glad you enjoyed the sandwich.

I shredd sharp chdr, smoke gouda, creamy havarty, mozzarella and cream chesse and form it in a big log rolled in bits of cooked bacon bits, kids absolutely love it and my husband loves slices of avocado in his.
Grilled cheese with tomato soup is an absolute classic. One cheese that I grew partial to using was pepper jack. For me it just adds a little something that makes it more savory and goes so well with soup. And cooking grilled cheese with a big juicy slice of tomato is great as well. You can add so many random things to it because it's so versatile. Everyone has their own version and it just seems like you'll never try 2 grilled cheeses that taste the same.
Cheddar and PepperJack was my go-to as well, with chives and spinach. Yum. My brother often stuck ham on his.

Brown 2 lbs groundbeef to your liking.
While it browns, slice a whole loaf of Italian or French bread thru the middle lengthwise and open. Example would be like they ate shown in "Subway" ads. May use a Bagette if you prefer.
Butter the bread and add Garlic or Garlic Powder to the bread, then brown in oven.
Once browned, add browned groundbeef, your favorite/favourite cheese, and any other toppings you like to your "burger".
Return to oven until the cheese melts, and other toppings(if any) begin to brown.
Brown until it is to your liking and enjoy.
I haven't tried that combo of cheeses. And they are my 3 favorites so not sure how I missed it.

Edit: I usually put the inside (un-buttered side of the grilled cheese), on the grill first to heat it and just lightly toast it. Then I flip it over to the bread side and add the cheese. So the cheese melts better. Then join them together whenever (you can always flip from side to side).
My husband lightly toasts the bread in our toaster oven before making the grilled cheese in the pan. So yummy!! It adds more texture.
Bacon and tomato and smoked cheddar for me and on thick grilled Texas toast!

My mom would put Mayo on the bread sometimes. It was delicious when she made it. I haven't been able to figure out the right amount. Mine taste okay, but nothing compared to my moms.
If you put the lid on the pan while cooking it locks in the heat and melts the cheese better.
Watching your son eat beans straight from the can without even heating them had me 😂. I like baked beans occasionally for a change, & when I go camping with friends we always have a night with beans as one of the main dishes. Also it brings back memories of eating "beanie weenies" as a kid. Do you have those? It's just baked beans with hot dogs cut up in them, but a favorite for a lot of families I knew growing up, especially in lower income houses. Baked beans were an inexpensive way to fill the kids up with protein, vitamins & fiber & most kids like them so win-win!

Using those types of beans is a British tradition. Lots of bean types used in the US, but not on bread or for breakfast like the English do. The Commonwealth countries got a lot of the British food traditions, but the US did not. The Germans, Italians, and Eastern Europeans had a huge influence on American food early on. .

A favorite meal for sure. Other good dips for the sandwich can be chili, salsa, bbq sauce, and ketchup. My preference is to make the tomato soup with warm milk. It gives it a creamier texture. Also the sandwich can also be made in your toastie maker. 😊
I think grilled cheese sandwiches was the first thing I learned to cook for myself that wasn’t frozen or prepackaged. It makes for a nice and easy snack that even kids can make for themselves once taught. I used to make them for myself after school starting around 10 years old. When I was in high school from ages 14-17 I’d come home from school and either make 2 grilled cheese sandwiches or two turkey sandwiches nearly every day, and then I’d also have dinner about 3.5-4 hours later.

I had swim practice every morning from 5 - 6:30 and again in the evening from 6 - 8. I cooked myself a couple of burgers right after school (starting around age 12) to carry me over until I ate dinner after evening practice. If there were no burgers around, it was grilled cheese for sure.

This was fun to watch. Like most other commenters, I grew up on grilled cheese. As I've gotten older, I've strayed from the classic American Cheese and prefer cheddar. One suggestion I would give is to adjust the amount of water in the soup to make it a little thicker. That will allow for better dipping. I have also found that a homemade grilled cheese is always better than what you get in a restaurant. Love the videos!
Yes on the amount of water in the soup. For canned Campbell's soup, I put in half a can of water (or milk) instead of a full can.
Campbell's tomato soup is much better if you use milk,instead of water.

This is one of my favorite meals which tells everyone that, yes, I grew up poor. A can of soup was .39 cents, bread was .17 cents. I forget what the cheese, mayo, and butter was back then. When I wasn't sure what to make for dinner or was in a hurry I would make this meal for my boys. I think the last time I made it was November 2022. The boys love it as well. I never use American cheese. We use sharp cheddar. I add spices to the tomato soup and garlic to the grilled cheese.
You dont have to be poor to respect the grilled cheese haha. The wife makes me cook a couple times a week and this is definitely my go to at least once. I like to mix it up a bit with bacon, different cheeses or breads, or some tomato and lettuce. It never gets old

When I want something fancier, I'll spruce up my egg sandwiches... American cheese (of course), hot sauce, tomato, avocado... etc!
We also use the Toastie makers for grilled cheeses. By the way you can also make very quick pepperoni sandwiches in those words a little mozzarella a teaspoon of pizza sauce and a good healthy handful of mozzarella with the pepperoni. Just make sure you butter your bread before you put them in the toaster maker,😊

Tomato soup and grilled cheese is a comfort food. Simple, but so satisfying. There is also a restaurant fairly close to us called The Wheel, where all they serve is custom made grilled cheese sandwiches. You pick the bread, the cheese, any meat you may want, and toppings. Sooooo good! If you are ever in Pennsylvania, it's in Pottsville. Just a small little place on a a corner, but worth it!!
Pro tip: Mix some shaved Parmesan cheese in with the butter you use on the bread and, it will make a crispy crunchy cheesy crust! I do this all the time, you can also add a few Bay leaves in your tomato soup while cooking.
During the summer, I slice a tomato to grill into my grilled cheese. I use White American cheese w/ either Colby Jack or a mild cheddar. My favorite all time sandwich is grilled white American cheese w/ dill pickle slices between the two pieces of cheese on rye bread w/ a touch of yellow mustard and mayo mixed on the inside pieces of bread. Butter the outside of the bread and fry like any other grilled cheese. I hope y'all enjoy your time in the states! Safe travels!

We call that a sandwich maker here, my grandparents had them and I had one for my children in the 1990’s. I use to make them ham and cheese, pizza and other varieties as well. We liked them too.

Yum! You can also add ham or prosciutto to the regular ones! Also, if you like garlic bread, you can melt the butter a bit & add a bit of garlic to it! Pure deliciousness!
