Bought Stellaris at Leguin. I havent had any space games ever. I was HIGHLY immersed. It's like Civ, just sucks your time into the ether of space and eternity.
my recommendation is to always go with a theme or to try and mimic your favorite race from media. it's easy as hell to make an overpowered species; but making a semi-mimic and roleplaying the game as them; is what can add a lot of fun to the game. taking sub-optimal choices, or play styles you might not otherwise do, will go a LONG way to adding something to the game for yourself.
I love doing this! The various origins provide a lot of great ideas for roleplaying. For example, one empire I had fun with was spiritualist xenophiles with a disabled Gate in their home system. They believed the gods left it there to call them to the stars. I've been contemplating doing the same origin, but having them be xenophobes who believe they must protect themselves from whatever might come through the Gate at all costs.
