As a teacher in Finland, I must say our system is great compared with many other but it is not perfect. Actually it is quite far from it. We peeked early 2000s with PISA but it has been downhill from the days. Yes, we do some things great, but especially stress related mental illness is growing among children, inclusion in schools doesn't work as planned and we are almost always short on staff in schools. The list goes on and on. Yes, we do things great but world changes. One main reason for our success is culture that values education and schools. We are living in global world that slowly but surely globalize the way of thinking. Culture is changing towards the western and global trends. Is it all good, I doubt.
@@isaklynch7217 yeah but honestly i think we should definitely try other systems around the world to at least help mitigate the stress levels in students while giving a high quality education. Being born in the Scandinavian countries is a blessing, free healthcare and free education. Taxes are a lot higher, but it works out when you don’t have to pay a shit ton of money on not dying Edit: so everyone has been saying the exact same thing “it isn’t free”, let me explain why we call it free healthcare. There now can everyone stop saying that it isn’t free, cause I’m no idiot I know it’s payed for by taxes

Reality in Finland: you get quite a bit of homework in primary school and most teachers require you to do all of it. In upper secondary school you get more (especially in math...) but you are usually not forced to do it, but in many cases you should in order the pass the courses/exams.
I live in finland and in my opinion this is very accurate. I'm from a smaller town so this answer might be different from others because of that. Only in math usually you have to do homework. You do get homework usually but its optional. Also I didn't know some schools make u wear uniforms until i saw about it on internet.. idk how common it is but in finland u can even go to school in pajama if u feel like it. Students' well being is usually the teachers most important value but the older angry teachers don't always think so. Also the food/lunch is free for students. U can choose in upper secoundary school from so many different courses of what you want to take. There is even a course for hiking in my school and a lot of other interesting things! My school also has a piano anyone is allowed to play in the lobby and we have a classroom deticated just for if you want to take a nap or study there. Sorry for typing such a long message i'm just so proud for my school for being so caring and amazing.
The piano thing is so true. Almost any school that is not elementary school (1-6 grades) has a school in the aula (lobby??) Our yläkoulu (idk the word) had one, and my vocational school also has one I have yet to see a school in Turku that doesn't have a piano in the common area
I also went to a small highschool and I can relate. Everyone came along with everyone and even teachers would sit down and chat with us. We could bring dogs to school (one dog per day) with a permission. During exam weeks most were wearing lazy clothing or even pajama pants, no one cared, especially seniors were like "understandable" lol I miss our hallway discussions and jackbox games ;(
As someone who is finnish and goes to a finnish school (obviously), it's pretty great. Free school lunch, no dress code or uniforms, 30 hours of school a week, the recess time depends though, in my school we have 5 min breaks and 15 min breaks, most times we have 2-4 15 minute breaks though. There's still a lot to improve when it comes to how they deal with bullying, and overall punishment though.
They get that much recess time? Bruh, we only get 5 to 10 minutes in our school. Like can you imagine, taking a bite at your food and there's already a teacher😭
My school decreasing the recess time from 30 mins to 20 mins is the most dumbshit decision ive ever seen, imma just write a whole god damn essay theyll never gonna expect and submit them to the school about how we need to change this broken system
Recess for me went from 30 minutes in Elementary School to 10 minutes in 5th and 6th grade, and then no recess at all in the rest of my grades. No wonder I feel less connected to my friends nowadays.

I dont know how any part of my comment could imply Finnish people arent from Finland unless you just dont understand english that well lol.
Im finnish and the video isn’t exatcly true. We do start to get a lot of homework after the age of 16. We also aren’t number 1 in PISA tests anymore. The standardized at 16 isn’t even mandatory. Also we don’t have a high school, at the age of 16 around 50% go to upper secondary school and the other half to vocational school. The long breaks and less homework as a young child is true. The school system still rocks, just remeber that not everything on the internet is fact checked.
Agreed! Also something that he didn’t mention, is that A) the school lunch is free and healthy B) all universities are free (idk about colleges, there aren’t a lot of them here) Homework thingy is somewhat true, but it obviously depends on the teacher and wether you let it pile up or not 10/10, would recommend :D
They also to afford the free university and all have to pay around a 30-56% income tax which is a much higher top tax bracket than America. The poorest in America to middle class actually got money in the last few years from the government and the rich financed 96% of government activities in the same time frame.
Here I am an Indian high school student who take caffeine to be awake to complete the school works. Not only I but many students here in Asia barely get their sleep. Bro, we have too much stress and pressure. School just don't care about the students health, they just care that the syllabus should be completed anyhow. You know I am feeling so frustrated like I have to be awake till 3 AM writing my assignments and completing my work and getting up at 5 to catch the bus for school😭 This is too much. I barely get three hours of sleep in 24 hours. 🥲 Seven hours in school four hours of classes three hours of self study and rest time in transportation. What is left for us to be Children!!
Im from Finland and this is mostly accurate, but it also depends a lot of the town/city. Usually smaller towns dont necessarily give as good education than bigger ones do, but generally it’s pretty good. About the recess, usually elementary gets, like he said, ~the 75mins of recess per day and middle school usually doesn’t get as much. The length of the day depends on the day, so every day is a different length, and homework usually depends on the teacher, but usually there is an option to do it in class. Also there is no dress codes or uniforms so you can wear whatever you want And Idk about any private schools, or at least any they would have an uniform, so almost all the schools are public and the lunch is always free. Edit: WOAH thanks for the likes
Education is not a mystery. The main thing Finland got right and other countries don't is this, and in this order: 1. Give teachers the best university education to become highly valued educational experts in their field (schools compete for them). 2. Give the experts (teachers) the autonomy to decide what to do and how to do it. 3. Provide continuous professional development. Everything else stems from that. They will know what's best for their students.

There is so much more to the Finnish school system. A lot of it stems from the teachers being EXTREMELY qualified and valued (compensation and respect). It is such a desired profession that even the training to be a teacher is extremely competitive. Better teachers, less stress for students, truly a winning situation.
Yeah, there is so much more to the U.S. school system sucking as well. Chiefly, that we have roughly 327 million more people. The STATE I live in has more kids in school than Finland has people. As a Finn, and like many others have already pointed it out, the homework thing is not 100% accurate. Some teachers want to see the life drain from their students' eyes while others do mental CPR in the background. It's a mixed bag and depending on if you're from a city or a small town, the quality of education can also vary. I've seen quite a few, ahem, "interesting" individuals in teaching positions in my 11-12 years of attending school, so yeah.
Ooo I appreciate your honesty and I will remember your comment. Most people take compliments like these and run away and brag about them on the internet so I really appreciate that you were more honest.
I appreciate your insight; it's easy to see a video like this and think, "how idyllic", but, while it may exist, it's not an entirely universal practice in Finland simply due to geographical reasons.
Eh, as a Finn I'd like to point out that these type of videos often present an idealistic version of our school system. Sure it's better than US, hut it comes with it flaws. The little to no homework claim certainly was not true when I was in school (graduated upper secondary school in 2017). Also in the recent years our PISA results have been in decline.

I knew this fact about Finland actually. It's really nice to see people having a hypothetically less painful education. I hope that at least some people can get the education they need. Edit: School is understandably still a huge struggle for students and teachers all around the world. I do hope that other students are receiving a far better education as years go by and society adapts. I know that not everyone is going to have a great time, but I do hope that a larger portion has at least a better education than I do.
Sorry to shatter your idea of Finland but it's actually pretty stressful. Here in Finland (in atleast the school I go to) we have a lot of exams and homework. I have almost 8 hours of school and then I do from 0.5 to 2 hours of homework. Yes. We have longer recess but it's not enjoyable because teachers expect us to be in class before it starts. I've been late a couple times because of that. The only thing we can do during recess is sit and talk about how we wish we were home.
I read some of the comments from other people and it sounds really stressful in other countries with more time used in homework. I get it that we have less but it is still something and that shouldn't be written as nothing.

A) 4 times a year we had a 2 week test period, with 2-3 tests per day at least, and then there were in-between tests as well. In one year it would be well over 100 tests
B) homework time needed per class, per day was about 30 minutes, not including group assignments, essays and book reviews. That's a minimum of 3 hours of homework per day, if you don't dilly-dally.
C) we had whatever time you needed to go from classroom to classroom, there was a 30 minute break on a 6 hour schoolday, 45 in total on an 8 hour schoolday.
Finland?
Attendance wasn't mandatory (our mentor/guide literally said 'of course! It is up to you, do you want to learn and pass, or do other things and fail.'

Awesome teachers who know their subject, and teach it in a way you understand ( it was neither teacher nor student's mothertongue)
There were a few tests, but in general, the teacher knew your understanding of the subject from what had happened in class.
We had 5-15 minutes in between class too, unless we had to go to a different campus. There was a 45 minute lunch break, with... free food, like... wholesome, healthy hot meals.

Education is not a mystery. The main thing Finland got right and other countries don't is this, and in this order:
1. Give teachers the best university education to become highly valued educational experts in their field (schools compete for them).
2. Give the experts (teachers) the autonomy to decide what to do and how to do it.
3. Provide continuous professional development.
Everything else stems from that. They will know what's best for their students.

@@somethingiwanttotry6251 I haven't had recess since primary school/ elementary school. The thing Finland does that is so great in particular is valuing their teachers. Teachers are very qualified, get good salaries, and are respected in their society as extremely important workers. The Finnish government does spend a lot more on education than the US though.
Not sure what sources you have but I’m pretty sure the US spends more money per student
@@glennireland163 In 2018 Finland spent 7% of their GDP on education. The US spent 5.7 % of their GDP in 2014.
I can only expect that the difference has increased science then as the Trump presidency cut spending on education while the Social Democratic government of Finland has increased spending.
Facts 👏👏👏
US GDP is bigger although I guess since there more students in the US the spending gets more spread out
@@Daniel-dk9zu Yes of course it is expenditure per student. That's why it is presented as a percentage. Of course the US has a much larger GDP, they are a bit bigger.

Honestly it’s all about the relationship with the instructor. If you connect with the instructor, both in college and high school, you will in fact learn and perform better. It’s because you trust and more so enjoy the teachings. But regardless, education is a complex issue.
Couldn’t agree more
Definitely. I also think that it also depends on the teachers attitude and approach to teaching. My algebra teacher was an asshole and I had terrible grades, my geometry teacher is amazing and I’m doing the best in math than I have in over 3 years
