    Just got here two years later from the future, lol. Ed Van Halen used an original Roland tape echo and also a home made echo out of a hacked tape player. I bought a Roland tape delay that kept eating the tapes and the proprietary cartridges were expensive. But while it worked, it was incomparable! Good to see it revived in a modern digital form, presumably more reliable.

    Great demo Pete, this sounds incredible - I can't believe we got the re-2, re-202 and the dl4-ii in one week. That enclosure makes me think a ce-1 re-issue has to be on the cards. Hats off BOSS, you are nailing it.

    I'm so glad to see that Boss/Roland has stepped up with a pedal that truly models what those old tape units really did. I used to use both a Space Echo and an Echoplex (my true love as far as tape units go), and I can tell ya that those things truly did make the tone coming out of the amp fatter, even when the echo unit was not being used.

    Pete, I did the same thing when I toggled the preamp on and off in the settings mode -- I thought to myself, "It's subtle but nice." Then I turned off the settings mode, and the preamp kicked-in 😅. Not sure if you ever got to hear the actual preamp. I just got my pedal and am on the fence about it, but it's a nice option to have. For all my breaking your balls I must say your reviews are a pleasure to watch, and I aspire to be 10% of the guitarist you are one day.

  • @pdbordelon
    @pdbordelon 2 года назад +2

    Loving the pedal and one of the most important things I learned from this video (at 4:06) is that if you are using the pedal in the effects loop of your guitar amp, like I am, switch the input to "line", NOT "guitar"! I had my input set on "guitar" and while it sounded good I found switching to "line" really smoothed the whole sound out, made the reverb in particular less harsh, and made everything easier to dial in. :)

    • @brianrodman1033
      @brianrodman1033 Год назад +1

      it will depend on the amp and whether or not the loop is line level (like yours) or guitar level. So its definitely smart to try both settings on any effect that has the feature to choose between the two levels.

    Space Echo, Echorec, and Echoplex were unobtainable tool trio of the "Rock God's" in my era as kid just starting to play back in the late 80's.
    Other than Boss's pristine DD line or EHX's "tape-ish" B-Brigade chip Memory guys?
    These were not readily available delay effects to the common working man masses, until 20 years ago that is, when a legendary product seemingly handed the once unobtainable cosmology of tape like delay convincingly & affordably within arms length. That product was the original Line 6 DL4. Absolute game changer IMO.
    I remember vividly when the guitarist I played drums with at the time got one, sitting down with it, and simply just being absolutely gobsmacked by what it was attempting to uniquely deliver to the masses. Was it perfect?! Absolutely not, but what it lacked in sonic recreation was made up in spades by it's innovation.
    Sure, the early run DL4 units notoriously would defect and go microphonic at times, and all add a quite noticeable coloration to one's tone, but what it was ambitiously attempting to offer in facsimile was worth the gamble, and still is IMO.
    Later on (still early 2000's) my guitarist opted for the Boss RE-20 Space Echo that I believe used COSM technology? That's really IMO when the more increasingly affordable digital models of vintage analog delays really started to shine and win over even the most traditionally biased of ears. If nothing more than by their cost effective reliability.
    Honorable "affordable" mentions spawned of that era and beyond to present day IMO?
    TC's Alter Ego & and later Alter Ego Deluxe, Fox Gear's widely price variant Echosex range of products, MXR Echoplex & Carbon Copy, Catalinbread's Belle Epoch, Keeley ECCOS, and even just recently NUX brand's own spin on the Space Echo sound with USB to PC capabilities. All of which are fantastic delay pedals for any budget. Hell, I've even still got a tiny Tone City "Tape Machine" micro pedal that I'm rather fond of to this day.
    This deluxe unit, and the smaller "traditional stomp" version within BOSS's new Space Echo homage debut are simply fantastic IMO. Yoshi never ceases to amaze me to be honest, but the original overarching point I was trying to make before rambling on is this:
    I don't think many younger players today actually understand just how subjectively unobtainable these more complex delay effects were to the average player enthusiast as far back as 20, or even up to 10 years ago.
    Right now is honestly a "golden age" for cost effective quality tone.
    Now, "get off my lawn!"
    Bwahahaha!
    Excellent Top Notch quality content as always Pete.
    Stay Golded Man!
    Cheers!

      I started playing in 83,and for awhile,the old tape units were unobtainable to the average 20 year old,playing in the garage like myself….but by the late 80’s,when digital delays were all the rage,you couldn’t give an Echoplex away….I bought an EP-3 in 88 for $25 in a Pawnshop…Then a year later I got a Space Echo for next to nothing…..by then,Delays like the 2290,Eventide,and Lexicon stuff were the unobtainable delays that all the Rock Stars were using….nobody cared about tape echo units for a good while….But by the late 90’s,the old units started becoming popular again,especially with the advent of the DL-4…people started remembering how good those old units sounded..I think it’s amazing how good these new emulations are….The Strymon EL-Cap,and now this..These things just keep getting better and better..Now,if TC would make a bang on version of the 2290 in a pedal,I would be set..

    Looking at that pedal casting, I'm envisioning a new CE-1 coming down the pipeline!

    love your demo! I played through the original Roland 201 in the late 70s. Modified it to use a foot pedal. This seems so much more practical :)

    Whatever money you get for this video is not enough. Absolutely killer! Forgot about my day for 14:34

    Wow, great playing...I had an original Space Echo, what a pain in the arse to keep going, so glad I sold it...this is on my list defo. Got the first Boss Space Echo modelling pedal, this one is miles more authentic.
