Highway 1 collapses in this area (Devil's slide, Big Sur, etc) seemingly every other year. CalTrans just keeps rebuilding it. Maybe they should consider routing this section of Hwy 1 further inland, on actual stable land and stop wasting taxpayer money.
It's not just Cal, over here in Oregon we have various roads on unstable coastal soil that wash out frequently, too. Cape Meares, for example, was re-opened recently after being cut off for months.
Precisely
That road is incredibly old, and narrow, let alone SIGNIFICANTLY unstable due to the terrain, soil, etc.
But NewSucks has to give funds to the noncitizens…
but wasting tax dollars is the entire purpose of their existence
Hills and forest would make it incredibly expensive, that's why they don't do it. Also there would be major protests from environmentalists and nature-lovers.
What they really need is a ferry or ferries along the coast as an alternative to the highway.
I hope Caltrans is monitoring that highway *closely.* I'm 63, and as far back as I can remember, Highway 1 has always had this problem with undermining and erosion.
The original highway 1 around Half Moon Bay washed-out about 60 years ago. I remember seeing portions of it back in the early 1970s.
Erosion is natural, while highways and other man made structures will succumb to entropy.
I am 71 and am the same as you, seeing this highway fall off the mountain somewhere along its length every couple of years. The only reason for it to be here is tourism and the California government seems to be determined to kill that industry off through neglect and bad policies.
This California Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo to Monterey is likely the most scenic highway in the state of California. However because of the steep terrain in the area it is very prone to landslides and often needs to be repaired.
This has been the case almost since its construction was completed in 1934.
@@chetpomeroy1399 It has been the case from day one... including during construction.
Not fun to drive in the fog.
Although Highway 1 is a very beautiful drive, it is built on unstable soil.
To be more specific: Oceanside cliffs that are made up of more sandy soil than rock.
@@merlball8520 The California coast is the accretion edge of a continent. Whatever is on top of the Pacific Plate that does not get subducted is added to the coast. This is why along some portions of the coast highway, the geology in the road cuts constantly changes. The best analogy that I can think of is imagine a dirty dusty floor with all sorts of other stuff mixed in from coarse sand to pebbles. Now that floor is swept and the pile that you end up with is basically similar to the California coast. The islands that are offshore the southern California coast will one day become part of the mainland. hth
Hmmm… maybe oughta re think where they put certain roads maybe huh?
@@Macismad so much of this knowledge is just in the last half century. The roads were there long before that. We live and we learn.
@@paulkurilecz4209 Thank you for that explanation, appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
I lived at Big Sur in 1973 and that stretchof 101 washed out 3 times in one month. I have never understood why they don't build an inland highway from Carmel. I used to use a dirt inland road to get from Carmel to Big Sur when there was an obstruction or washout.
You mean highway 1? 101 is a different freeway
LOL they can NOT lay one single train track without 20 years of enviromental impact studies voted for by the same people who complain nothing ever gets done. 😂
That would cost money
There is no one left in Cali Government with a working brain.

I have been on this highway so many times in the past. It was one of my dad’s favorite drives.
Hope everyone gets home safe
Great depiction of situation. Well done story. Thanks from Gainesville Florida down in the swamp.
This is why you keep your gas tank full. You might be stuck in traffic for hours anywhere
And why you DON'T buy an EV.
@@currentbatches6205An EV doesn’t waste away power the same way a gas powered one does when just sitting idling. And if the engine is turned off, it doesn’t make any difference what kind of vehicle you have.
@@germainesf It actually does. It has to keep the coolant at a stable temp (it has both heaters and coolers), run all the electrical ssystems onboard, and quite likely, the very inefficient a/c.
Or just don't take roadways that are on soft cliff sides next to moving water.
Stuck?? turn off your car!!
are you an idiot??😂
Because highways built on the edge of a cliff are always safe...GEEZ...

Why woul living next to the Pacific Ocean, Earth's biggest Ocean--cause "erosion" over time? It must be lack of EV's. (Sarcasm)

Transportation Secretary Bootyjuice said that the road was extremely racist and that the will rebuild and name it the George Floyd memorial road.
The sad thing is you actually have to warn people that that's sarcasm
I can hardly remember a year when SOME part of the coast hwy didn’t collapse.
Not just the coast line. Every spring there is lots of material shift in CA. Nothing new. Just be aware and plan accordingly.
How can they rebuild the road when there is no earth left underneath?
@@ColtraneTaylor I remember one instance where crews routed further into the hillside.
@@seamusoreilly804 I wonder how much rock they would have to remove higher up to prevent that coming down in future landslides.
Happens every year.

(Quite an eye opener). The following day we drove down to San Simion on Highway 1, what a glorious drive. I think the we were told that the road was originally built by convicts during WW11. Hopefully they will get the road repaired soon.

It's called erosion and it's going to continue forever.

Focus cameraman Wow, a professional too
Wow, who would have thought that when you build a highway so close to the coast it would one day fall into the sea?! lmao
Time for a new re-routed road.
Reroute for vehicle traffic, and make it a bike only section. I love this highway but enough money has been spent here that can go towards better uses.
Highway 101
Used to drive the old highway 1 alot. But, it’s not feasible for a lot of traffic. More for a beautiful, quiet, drive along the creek, through the woods, kind of drive.
So "no one is trapped" is what you're saying.
Bingo.
Mama nature does not play. Highway one is so beautiful, but has had many issues over the past decade. What to do? Love that space. A wonder of nature
Gotta' love how our society doesn't tolerate inconvenience.

This is why we need high speed trains since yesterday
Apparently you can use the road anytime if your mode of transport is a space hopper
Did you guy's see the sign on the bridge says 1932 I've been right in 1970 in Ft Ord and all of those waves beating on that shore for 92 yrs? In 1970 when I was standing there wandering how abuse can these cliff's take ?????
🧐 Does anyone know if there is an *open* dirt road east of Hwy 1 that will bypass this section?
I have an ADV motorbike, and I'm coming down from up north in June and was planning to do Big Sur…
I know there are some sections which have old but good roads that that go up into the hills and link back to 1, I just don't know if *this* section is one of those. any knowledge will help would be appreciated 🏍️ :-)
Can't blame for road for wanting to leave California! Just glad it's heading further west.
😂😂😂
Edited... and that's the best you can come up with.
God bless, protection. ❤❤❤
Clearly they dont have the capabilities to manage this level of erosion. It seems like an impossible situation.
Oh... you think man can stop nature, do you...
I mean the sign says its nearly 100 years old afterall.
And in some places older.
The most beautiful place in the world.
As long as you can ignore the people.
Oh my heart breaks for them😏
Beautiful coast road, but built long before massive growth in commuting and tourism, and maybe with little consideration of natural coastal erosion and storm damage. Sticking-plaster short term fixes are no good. Radical rethink needed: is there railway further inland? Could commuter road be built alongside, leaving coast-hugging road for lighter tourist traffic?
Highway 101 is the commute route, and does quite well. You don't drive 1 unless you're either a tourist or live in one of the small coastal enclaves. Which mostly rely on tourism.
Was it an atmospheric river?
No this happens when it rains. This happened when the road was first built.

20 miles of highway with no crossroads? really? i dont believe it.
I didn’t drive this weekend
Is there no other way to get into and out of Big Sur, even if it's a long drive?
No, the roads other than CA1 are dirt which are most likely inaccessible.
Big Sur is now a Big Mess 😂
What are they trying to do connect this to another bridge going down anything to get somebody to read their news I guess

Trapped? Hardly….stuck for hours
In 2016 a lot of money was voted on by the people of California to pay for this very infrastructure. It passed. I can now see the money was spent very wisely. Can’t you see that too? What’s wrong with you?
From Newsome down, lets let Cali go entirely back to nature.
You first ass hat

Maybe but 75% of Americans agree with it. Adios California
Whoa, that's unfortunate time & place for multiple slipouts happen along critical stretches, a double whammy stranding a couple thousand folks! Appears that walls of cliffside detached along sections but portend other actions happening. Definitely challenging area to maintain infrastructure, though iconic route & well deserved title because when visit Big Sur & drive along PCH then always remember. While aware of general geography, geology, climate, & environmental factors, but unsure about various parcel details & else, property at risk near that slope, present state of the vegetation, risk, hazard, & catastrophe, ... perhaps reroute while determine how engineer for future risks because those sections already prone to slipouts (any detailed record of occurrence & frequency?), land use & alteration along the slope, amid the canyons, & about the region. Beside undercut by waves then vaster area always encounter mass wasting along with alluvium from Big Sur watershed with a catchment basin ringed by Santa Lucia mountains that has a prominent coastal peak & formidable topography with relatively high slope gradient amid the region that is Monterey county CA. Obviously (to anybody visited or may be aware by interwebs) there are numerous fantastic bridges which transit across canyons, rivers, & creeks, although streams may not readily appear but various precip possible, from atop the mountains to the ocean, water will flow, permeate, & affect the area, as mentioned by the report, present rain further exposing & enhancing the hazards along with the erosion. Stay safe & well.
Probably need more charging stations.
Errrm... there is one lane open, so *not* trapped. Do better faux!

Take a good look at where this highway is built. “There’s your problem.” - Adam Savage
So they're not trapped, they're stuck in traffic 🤣. I'm happy to hear this but annoyed at the title!
Can’t they drive east and go around?
They can’t drive east, the roads that connect Big Sur to the outside other than CA1 are either dangerous or closed or not well maintained dirt roads.
They are doing the right thing - reducing traffic and making sure the traffic moves slowly. The slower the traffic, the less stress on the road.
That area of Highway 1 has a lot of *rugged coastline* and we all know that erosion is not a huge fan of reversing itself. So, I agree with those who say that other measures - beyond patching it up every year or so - must be taken.
Let them use highway 101. People are too obsessed with having a view of the ocean when they drive.
Career security - rebuilding Hwy 1
Over and over and over and......
I hope they have charging stations for those stuck in the traffic.
Its been like that for the last 5 months. It was exactly like that 5 months ago AND caltrans were there DESTROYING the road and the hillside all the while hundreds of people were stuck in traffic
What do you mean? Can you be more specific about what CALTRANS was doing?
The highway lottery line
3 washouts since 2018 at least.
Hmm, this is interesting. How would you fix it? One idea is to let traffic use the unaffected lane while repairing the damaged side. But what if that puts too much stress on the rest and causes it to collapse? Is building on a cliff face just inherently problematic? I'm looking for advice from someone with an engineering background on how to tackle this.
