According to the canon novel, this version of Bruce did go around the world learning different subjects and the martial art forms of the countries he was in. Alfred was responsible for teaching him self-defence as a kid, but he did later travel around the world after graduating.
It also explains why his Spanish isn't good despite him being a linguistic as he never went to Spain during his travels.

They're not avoiding Bruce Wayne because Robert Pattinson is bad at being Bruce, it's because his character is not there yet, he hasn't discovered the need for there to be a Bruce, that's why we hardly have Bruce in this one. I'm sure in the next one, there'll start to be somewhat of a balance between the two personas

I roll my eyes every time someone criticizes his Bruce Wayne, when clearly this is an undeveloped Batman.
He doesn’t have batterangs, this is likely his first time using the flight suit, the Batmobile is still just a car, he hasn’t met any real supervillains (Riddler is probably the first) and he doesn’t even call himself Batman yet. He’s vengeance.

@@Darthvader68778 but he wasn't even the Joker yet at that point I bet. Probably following the Red Hood/Mask story where he just a regular comedian, went on a heist, messed up, fled and fell into a chemical plant then went insane, got caught by Batman. Year 1 is mostly about Bruce's rampage on common thugs where the villains we all know are still in the background, where the most prominent ones are the mobs like Carmine Falcone and the setup for Court of Owls but that comes later on. If Matt Reeves is following that timeline, then it's safe to say that the next one could be Mr. Freeze/Scarecrow/Two Face/Bane where we deep dive into the Arkham Asylum as well to meet Hugo Strange. This is the period where Joker is Joker and Riddler is Riddler and they sort of become rivals to see which one can make Batman cross that line. Penguin of course is at the top at this point then maybe they would introduce us to Madhatter, Victor Zsasz, Black Mask, Calendar Man, Clayface, Solomon Grundy, Tweedledum & Tweedledee, Firefly, etc. After that could be the rise of Gotham City Sirens; Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Then Deathstroke x Deadshot saga, Amanda Waller and her Suicide Squad. Fuck, I count more than 5 movies if they seriously want this one to be whole lol.

Exactly, he's still too fresh, he's too deep in his grief and trauma, he's not ready to be Bruce Wayne yet. I liked the ratio of Batman to Bruce Wayne in this one, and I look forward to that leveling out more as they continue this arc of films.

One of the smartest aesthetic choices they made was making the black eye make up canon. Just like Eric said, Paul Dano as Riddler is just perfect casting. When he was announced I immediately knew he would kill it. Same for basically all the other actors but those two performances particularly stood out to me. Robert Pattinson can definitely play the playboy persona if they wanted him to. He has the acting ranges and abilities to do so. I know Eric, Calvin and Aaron reacted to Tenet a year before this. So seeing Pattinson with the clean look and “playboy-esque” personality in Tenet is pretty much a hint of what we’re gonna get in the sequels since Matt Reeves wanted to develop/grow these characters.

While I agree 100% that a cinema is always the best presentation platform for a movie - and that the sound design in The Batman should have gotten a credit as supporting cast - any movie still has to stand alone on its story, acting and direction, free of the format novelties that a theater can offer, or the movie as an "event". Having said that, it's hard not to be a little resentful of the widescreen crop on the home version of "Dune" after having seen it in full Imax.

_"If you can't imagine your version of Batman comforting a child, then it's a bad version of Batman."_
This is my new favourite Batman film, because it's how I've seen Bruce for a while now. He should be more than anger and violence and "How much prep time?" He should make errors. He should be socially awkward and look one clumsy mistake away from a small nervous breakdown. He should have more than one or no emotions. He should be kind, and be grateful, and be inspirational, and maybe even crack a smile if he's in the mood.
The images of Bruce wordlessly bonding with a newly orphaned boy, pushing said boy out of the path of a car, helping people out of wreckage, guiding the panicked to safety, carrying a injured civilian to a stretcher, and (above all) letting his hand be held because he recognises that someone needs to hold it a little longer as they're taken away... It makes me cry, and it makes me so grateful.
Batman's been around a long time, so he's viable to many interpretations, and indeed there have been. If you like another Batman more, power to you. My first Batman was Val Kilmer, and he was probably the most dull of them all. But with what Batman has become in the eyes of many fans - an angry supergenius with a contingency for everything - it was so surprising and so refreshing to see one who was human. So many Dark Knights focus on the "Dark" instead of the "Knight", and Battinson has touched my heart so much more than any other film Batman.
I'd have seen this film anyway, because it's a Batman film, but I thought it was gonna be another grim, dark, angry Batman interpretation in the vein of Batfleck. Again, if you like Batfleck then that's fine, but I didn't want the character to become increasingly violent and deranged. When I saw Bruce having to wear sunglasses in the day and listening to Nirvana, I saw a manchild in the best way; someone genuinely damaged by his trauma and not living healthily because of it. When I saw Batman question his parents' actions and lashing out at Alfred, I saw a man who wasn't sure of himself but was sure he wanted to be in the right. When I saw Batman comfort civilians and recognise he needed to change, I saw the best of what the character can be.
As the stretcher lifted, I felt something from going to the cinema that I haven't felt since the opening credits of _The Force Awakens,_ the portals opening in _Avengers: Endgame,_ or the three Spider-Men teaming up in _Spider-Man: No Way Home..._ A sense of gratitude that I happened to be born at the right time to see what I was seeing on the big screen.
Thank you, Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson, and everyone else involved in bringing us this film, this image, this experience.

    • @KingKhupacabra
      @KingKhupacabra 2 года назад +20

I felt the same way. Batman is a manifestation of dark and hope, my favourite adaptation of batman is Robert Pattinson. When Catwoman said to Batman, “ u don’t rlly care about me huh”, I immediately thought a scene in Batman beyond return of the joker where Barbara said to Terry, “ Bruce only cared about the mission”. It was then I felt that Robert’s Batman can be the same Batman on the cartoon shows/ movies.
This is my Batman. Bruce’s rlly power is his willpower not his intelligence or skills but willpower. The third act demonstrated this soo well. Matt reeves understands that and the character. My fav version of Batman is always the young type anyways, Like in batman year one, long Halloween and The batman 2004. This is the batman movie I’ve always wanted

We have a signal now, for when I'm needed. When that light hits the sky, it's not just a call- it's a warning. To them. Fear is a tool. They think I'm hiding in the shadows. But I AM the shadows. I wish I could say I'm making a difference, but I don't know. Murder, robberies, assault- 2 years later, they're all up. And now this. This city's eating itself. Maybe it can't be saved, but i have to try. PUSH MYSELF. These nights all roll together in a rush, Behind the mask. Reeves did say it’s unlikely that joker is in the next film, and that his main purpose in this film was to establish Batman has already faced some of his rogues gallery in the first few years aswell as a symbolism that after beating the riddler there are more villains coming and that it gives you the sense that Batman’s crusade of vengeance has amounted to nothing, they’ll always come back. This ties perfectly into his realisation that he must be something different a symbol of hope for people to believe in, because he can’t stop all these villains if the city isn’t there to help and KEEP them locked up afterwards, he needs assistance to rid the city’s corruption, which honestly ties perfectly into harvey dent and the court of owls if they continue the corruption story Line

The thing I like about Batman (in general) is that he fails, and then improves. So to see this Batman making mistakes (i.e: crashing into the bridge) I can only conclude that he'll be working to iron those out.
Like, a Batman who doesn't fail/make mistakes is a Batman who doesn't need to prepare. But as we all know, Batman likes to prepare. And the usual reasons why he prepares is either because of a mistake, or because he thought about the possibility beforehand. Plus, this is year 2. Not the super paranoid, insanely preparedness of a veteran Batman who has _seen some shit._

The best thing that I caught on a second viewing, that I somehow missed on the first, was that at the beginning, the guy he saves is scared of him, asking him not to also hurt him. But, at the end of the film, you see the lady touching Batmans arm, showing that, he has evolved from someone who is only vengeance, to someone who is to be looked up to. Obviously thats part of the dialogue, and his movement from one spectrum to the other, but I loved the overt symbols of that.

Loved your guys’ reaction. I do disagree with your criticism of Batman’s detective skills. The way he combs over the Mitchell crime scene in the beginning is fantastic, from his knowledge of when the thumb was cut to his spotting of the blood where the murder weapon laid, he was very intuitive. He also knew where to find the clues, at the bottom of the rat maze and the top of cage near the end. Sure Alfred may have helped with the cipher early on but it was Bruce that figured out how to decipher it to find “drive”. He does make mistakes (which I like) by trusting Alfred’s rata alada translation and not knowing what the carpet tucker was. But why would Bruce Wayne know what that tool’s for lol? Alfred trained Bruce to defend himself after his parents were killed but when Bruce went to college he changed often because he would change his major often, and learned and mastered a new fighting style everywhere he went, which was like his travel around the world to train. He actually becomes a street racer at 17 where I’m which he develops his bat-mobile from a old muscle car he kept upgrading more and more in the bat cave which ended up being a de rear subway under Wayne tower that the Wayne’s used to avoid traffic, which has been abandoned after their death. I’m not going into full detail on the book because I strongly recommend reading it, but that’s some background info on this version of Batman.

This is perhaps the most faithful adaptation of Batman from the comics I have ever seen. Especially if you read Scott Snyder’s run of the comics with The Court Of Owls, which fingers crossed 🤞 we get in the next movie.
And I especially loved that not only did he stop a mass shooting (especially now that sadly in America they are almost commonplace) and beat them to a pulp, but also showed he doesn’t just have to be a punisher of criminals, but a savior of the innocent.

After seeing it a few times and letting it marinate for a month and a half in my mind, I think it’s my favorite live action Batman adaptation. Pattinson crushed it! The whole cast did and the director Matt Reeves and Michael Giacchino’s score!

I like that this film makes Batman seem more supernatural. Like he really is some creature from myth come to put fear into the wicked. The way he blends into the shadows and appears from seemingly out of nowhere. How he's able to take gunshots and shrug them off. How his signal is a sign to criminals that he is out and about, making them paranoid of every shadow. He really feels like some kind of monster compared to his other movie incarnations.

41:03 There is actually a The Batman prequel novel for this movie. It reveals more info on Bruce and how he trained to be the Batman. Eric makes a good point here, because this Bruce did go on a world tour and attended the best universities around the world and he also mastered (or at least familiarized himself with) every martial arts in those respective schools.
