@MynameisByf please for the love of God. As A huge KF simp the lore of that Raid is awesome would love to watch a vid of you going through it in detail of encounters and what's going on. Even if these previous raids are the "past tense" before the Final Shape idea. These raids still have meaning to different people of the community!!! Also shout out to VoW would love one of those as well!!!!
29:00 i never thought of it like that, especially since the "resonance beams" both Rhulk and the witness use is like a 3D representation of sound waves. That blew my mind. Outstanding work as always Byf.
After hearing that perspective, it's even more intriguing as to why the antagonist for Episode 1, who is in possession of an Echo, is called "The Conductor."
i don’t watch a lot of streams anymore, just not my preferred way of watching content, but i used to watch him all the time, since he was around 4k subs, i still love seeing his success and hearing his name pop up with other large destiny creators
I think that since the timer isn’t final shape looming in verity, but is instead imminent end and when the phase completes the heart pulses maybe the heart pulsing is reversing the final shape which has been enacted outside of the traveler similar to the opening cutscene. Furthermore, i think that at this point in the raid the final shape is enacted but once the encounter has been completed we have not only reversed the final shape but also partially cut the witness’s ties to the traveler’s light thus buying us more time for the final boss.
Something I wished Byf or others talked about was the "We"/Plural the Witness used could have potentially been a facade, as when Ghost confronted it in the Vanguard War room, It spoke back to Ghost with a singular male voice, & when It was wounded & angered, it returned & kept using that voice until It's death, as there wasn't an overlap of voices like there usually is & instead just an echo. Devs have said in Vidoc 1 that there's moments where the *real* Witness comes through
I feel like that voice might be the head mind who probably came up with the idea of the witness is my guess But i dont think it’s a facade, being a collection of billions of minds each with their own voice, and those who speak against the collective are locked away
Something should be said about the weird effect on the sides of your screen during Verity, showing the true room with the roots and ruin showing that the Witness is actively shrouding your vision until your character is dead to see the true nature of everything. Super cool touch I noticed during my first run
55:12 Theory time: the Herald is actually the disciple from the winterbite exotic. The witness put his upper half back together after we split him with the canon.
Regarding the lack of Conductors in the final encounter and the means of obtaining Glyphbreaker, I think a musical explanation works really well. Using your explanation of the resonance to delay the Final Shape in encounters 1-3, I view that as the guardians “scrambling the notes of the sheet music” that the Witness is actively writing to perform a final symphony to free time. The more resonance deposited equals more notes scrambled and more time for the Witness to “decode” the staves which the music is written on. Fast forward to the final encounter, you are no longer “scrambling the sheet music”, but you are rather “learning the music yourself” by listening to it, and then the act of breaking a button is synonymous to playing a dissonant chord within his symphony, enough to make any conductor recoil. Enough dissonant chords interjected and the conductor must always stop the music to address the foul players. It’s in this moment that the conductor is vulnerable, losing control of his symphony and exposing himself to the attacks of the dissenting members.
My wife is hooked on the lore now after watching your 10 hour lore video with me. I can't wait to watch this with my wife later on! THANK YOU MY NAME IS BYF!!!!!!!
1:02:15 i actually had a theory with a friend based on the very mission they are discussing. While yes, the Pyramid Ships are unmanned physically, they are manned structurally. Each Pyramid is graced by the presence of a Veiled Statue, would it not be too farfetched to assume that they Statues that house the consciousness of the Precursors are controlling the ships? Every ship we have been aboard has had at least 1 statue. While the Statues man the ships in the absence of a Disciple, those that are manned by Disciples could be how many of the followers of the Witness commune with him. As we saw ourselves in the Ghost mission, Cayde mentioned that we never found out who was in charge of it, yet when we get to the end, in the very room where we get deepsight, is a veiled statue/dissenter, who talks back to us. Its the only logical explanation for the many unmanned ships. The Witness would send his disciples to subjugate and ransack worlds left by the traveler, why the rest of the fleet manned by the statues continued hunting with the Flagship.
I actually like this theory cause it highlights that the witnesses reach as very far and that the veiled statues are more than simply inanimate objects that consist of the souls of precursors, it shows that the statues themselves do have slight physical power over objects they are connected to. Perhaps it could explain why the Europa pyramid never seemed to act in hostility whenever we enter it as the statue was a dissenter and so it decided to guide us through portions of the pyramid that weren't blocked by cabal interference as it was showing that it wanted us to help it and to display that it's trying to help us with our mission.
@@horrorpleb249 truly, there is no explanation as to why it would have entertained us or gave us Stasis and Deepsight on Europa if it wasn't a Dissenter in charge of the Pyramid on Europa
Byf is the reason I'm capable of explaining the lore of d2 to my wife. She asks me fantastic questions about the game all the time, so thank you byf 👍🏽
Something that had been on my mind about the Dessenters and their statues, our first direct interactions with darkness and the uses of darkness were with those statues, could we have gotten our access and use of stasis have come from the Dessenters to fight the Witnesses?
That’s an awesome idea!!! The only thing standing in the way of that theory is the level of presence the pyramids had in beyond light. It feels like there was waaaay too much “witness” presence for it to be dessenters. Stasis felt borderline manipulative if you ask me. I’m not sure how well that lines up with precursors. But as a story I like your idea more than the witness giving us stasis
Well, the Dessenters couldn't outright defy the Witness at that point and didn't know how receptive we would be. And it is the Witness's motivation to offer power to others to gain their compliance. If some of the Witness's voices are offering darkness to Guardians that makes only for it to be to the Guardians with the strongest will and ability to defy the Witness as well.
There's a line in-game during Zavala's AWOL Darkness Party Time that stipulates the Veiled Ones are specifically only Dissenters. We never see the Veiled Statues get hostile or angry with us, which doesn't track if they are specifically still loyal to the Witness. The only thing that makes sense is that they're Dissenters. Eris Morn's first exposure to Stasis was in the one of the final story cutscenes for Shadowkeep, where she's seen approaching the Veiled Statue and her little Hive-energy-ball-rock thing starts to shift. She covers it in Stasis, and then turns to smile almost directly at the camera. There's no doubt in my mind that they'd been helping us all along. The Veiled Statue on the Moon absolutely pointed the way forward for Eris to discover and utilize Stasis.
I’ve legitimately rewatched the whole stream 4 times! Absolutely amazing!! The way I have been on and off this games since 2014 and the only reason I comeback is to learn and watch some byf videos. I did find, in reference to the snake witness concept, that if you watch the witness fall down after final encounter you can see the witness is DEFINITELY coiled and as it retreats, it SEVERS it's tail, disconnecting from the main structure of the spire. Pretty cool stuff
The dunky dunky music box At the first encounter, i just noticed it has the "give" symbol on it, so if you remembered the symbols for Vow, you would understand you need to give something to the box. Love that design
This video is the real accumulated Destiny 2 experience. From the "easy 10 minute encounter" turned into 3 or 4 attempts by "professionals" to the dumb jokes between friends and of course all with the bonus of Byf telling you a story along the way.
34:00 if The Witness trying to arrange The Final Shape like music, then surely it is a Composer, and not a Conductor, right? Or maybe a composer aspiring to also be the conductor, once the masterpiece is finished.
I think conductor makes sense but if you think about it another way. This song is already playing, the shapes of the universe exist already, but it is the witness calling upon each individual for their “perfect good” purpose to harmonize. The song always plays like I said, but to the witness it is dissonant until he steps in. Which very much so is a conductor.
Inside the traveler, the witnesses depiction is its physical manifestation of the memory, and not just the memory but the active memory that’s why the witness is able to change things
Imagine if it's both. Chelchis and Taniks since Chelchis is by all accounts fearless. Taniks is pretty much immortal. Both of those traits would be the building blocks of a good disciple
I interpret the monolith and the pale heart as a sort of irony (if im using that right) the light is based on the laws and physics of the universe ( physical matter) whereas the darkeness is more intangible (matters of the mind/feelings) but inside the traveler, the roles are reversed, the witness crafts the monolith in a physical sense, it makes what it wants but the pale heart manifests what it can from others thoughts and feelings.
Hello Byf! I very much enjoy your content and storytelling! A thought came to my mind when you're in the varity encounter with your team that furthers the lore as well. My theory is: rather than it being a bug, I think swapping out the shapes in the beginning of the encounter is necessary because those are the shapes the Witness designated for each guardian, and swapping them out drives the point of guardians making their own destiny by removing the fate that was designed by the Witenss. This goes along with what you mentioned in the beginning of the verity encounter.Anyways, thank you for the amazing content and analysis you provide with the story of Destiny!
All my favorite content creators under one umbrella....this video is heaven.. @Byf, what roll are you using on the Maahes? I had no idea it was so good ...wow
58:35 one thing I've recently had a questions about since it was brought up in one of the micah lost ghost missions, could the thing that drove the Europa pyramid possibly be the Disciple that owned Winterbite? I mean Winterbite is the ONLY stasis glaive currently and obviously our first real interaction with Stasis was Europa from that pyramid, and now with bungie specifically giving us the question "what piloted that pyramid" I think it's possible that not only was there a Disciple with strong stasis connection but that it could still be out there
3:48:49 I just watched the whole raid. Great content. You're so Knowledgeable it's awesome. On the hands the ing euphony. Someone else may have pointed this out but, the barrel forms 2 hands in a Kamehameha position where the strand comes out
You mentioned that Verity is supposed to be where the Witness keeps their stores of light for when they need it. It could be something similar to when Ghaul used that contraption to trap in the Traveler, maybe that’s what’s happening here. That white orb in the middle is essential the Battery and cage that keeps the light it captured contained. When we complete the encounter it’s us breaking that cage and freeing the light the Witness was storing. That’s why we can ascend once the encounter has been beaten.
It makes me feel like an old man. All my favorite Destiny RUclipsrs sense the start of Destiny, all showing up in each others videos… I remember being a young man and wanting that when they were younger, and now here it is all the time…
My only reasonable take on the Monolith is that the Witness has so many people contained within that the memories/thoughts of the people within are directly capable of manipulating what they conceive of as the Witness. It's an abstract concept, the binding of all of these people into one being, and so they conceptualize of it all the same way. It's not just that the Witness created the Monolith; it's a manifestation of their pride and ego, collectively. It's how they *all see themselves* and the multitude of memories/ideas of many converging onto one design, taking the disparate parts of the people within the Witness as they all coalesce together.
One thing I really liked was just how engaged and attentive fallout was throughout the entirety of the stream Not to say the others weren’t but Fallout seemed so so interested contantly and extremely enthusiastic, aswell as requesting Byf do some lore content with Anno Classic Fallout W
Honestly, have no idea what’s going on, but it’s very interesting and I don’t know how I’ve got you but the video has a good tone to it which probably makes it very easy to watch
1:31:58 I think the Witness sees itself as the First Knife, something that exists only in theory as the tool used to prune A Final Shape, and not literally the First Knife in The Winnower’s hand.
I think we should think of the witness as a roskos basilisk. Meaning the we isn’t limited to who it was. It can see us by relativity. Outside just like the winnower. Think about how it speaks directly and indirectly at the same time.
1:12:52 I like to think of the long spire at the edge of arena heading upwards is the witness' metaphorical spine and the bramble is the traveller's nervous system and in an effort to become one, it has grafted the nerves of the traveller onto its spine. which would account for the screams we hear.
Verity - Traveller's Pale Heart. The Pale Heart holds the key. Are we making the key, and what happens there (defining our own shape there), being what truly allows us to defeat The Witness
Fallout’s mention of wishing the witness had followed through as a snake/shape shifting design would have been really cool. But I also could see their current implementation still slightly following that mode when you think about the hands that come into the encounters. Though we can’t see them as connected to the Witness’ body, who are we to say if they aren’t connected to their manifestation in another dimension or something that our guardians can’t perceive?
I've been watching this video during my free time (twice in full already). I just wanna ask if you can create time stamps for different parts of lore? Thanks for creating a lore run. This is very fun to watch.
Hey Byf, I dunno if you'll ever read this but the buttons on the Witness' form on Zenith is very similar to wind instruments like a Bassoon or a clarinet, which also plays into the musical angle heavily. I haven't really heard anyone make mention of it, but it's something interesting.
Late reply after watching this video for the 3rd time, when you mentioned the blood possibly being a vein i want to add that the bubbles in the blood appear to be moving i. A curcular motion creating an image that looks like DNA strands which would make sense because the witness is supposed to be embodyment of his entire species which is why he has so many faces...so maybe the swirling of the blood section is combining all of the DNA of his people....something like that lol
50:55 It might also be noted here that Rhulk is a pretty good prototype for what we, our Guardian, the Young Wolf, whatever you want to call us, would become if we accepted the offer of a Discipleship. Arrogant, deriving a measure of security and solace from that arrogance, a blunt instrument capable of smashing through anything in our path, and utterly alone. So underneath the environmental storytelling there's also this cautionary tale, told solely through subtext.
This is my interpretation of the Gardener, the Winnower, the Traveler, the Witness, and the Final Shape: The Gardener and the Winnower are like two owners of a local Chess Club. The Gardener was responsible for setting up the board and pieces, and the Winnower was responsible for the rules of the game, IE how to claim your opponent's pieces and how to win/end the game. The Gardener got tired of the game always ending, and decided to create a new rule. This rule allowed claimed pieces to come BACK once claimed, and the Gardener inadvertently created new players that would play with this new rule, and this is what infuriated the Winnower. From the Winnower's perspective, a lost piece coming back undoes the work that was put into claiming that piece, and if pieces can come back, then the game can NEVER end. No winners, no losers, only stagnation and endless, unmeaning game play. The Winnower realized that they can simply kill the chess players, ending the game completely. This realization is the "First Knife." This continued for eons, new games being set up, futile moves and counter moves, and then the Winnower ending the game by killing the players. Eventually, a player made a revelation: If it could put the enemy King and it's own King into checkmate, then the game would be a draw, and would be allowed to end without the Winnower's intervention. It wouldn't need new pieces to be claimed, or to be brought back. The game would be over. This player is the Witness, and that checkmate is the Final Shape. The Witness knows that the Gardener is responsible for allowing games to stagnate, which is why it is against it. The Traveler is a physical manifestation of the Gardener's Rule, and we, the Guardians, are the players who sit opposite of the Witness. We are a legion of millions, set in cosmic opposition to a being composed of a million voices. In both of us dwells the resolve to end the game, but where we find enjoyment in the act of playing, the Witness finds purpose in the act of winning. Savathun, she has begun to understand the game, the players, and the ones responsible for setting these conditions in motion. Her goal is to have us leave the table, leave the Chess Club, and make new games of our own...
The tentacles, witness, strand, threads of fate, the nine, all these things are connected. Maybe the witness is a being like the nine but not connected like the nine and now that the body was scattered, the memory could come back as an infection or something.

This has been a pleasure to watch Byf. Coming back to this a few times now.
Someone else may have pointed this out but, the barrel forms 2 hands in a Kamehameha position where the strand comes out
This was extremely fun to watch. Thanks byf
You can never over do these. Raid-a-longs are terrific
This is amazing to watch and listen to. Byf you need to do voice acting dude. Brilliant tone fella.
“I don’t need ammo I just need to speak” 😂
Byf literally our osiris. The destiny scholar.
An absolute blast thanks for answering soo many questions plz do more 🙏 ❤
It makes me feel like an old man. All my favorite Destiny RUclipsrs sense the start of Destiny, all showing up in each others videos… I remember being a young man and wanting that when they were younger, and now here it is all the time…
been waiting for this video. couldnt see the raid stream when it was done. LETS GOOOOO
Bro, your voice is something else. Ngl, absolutely love hearing the lore from you aha.
Thank you i just started watching but this is lovely!!
We need more of these for other dungeons/raids.
you can also get on top of the cube in 3rd encounter. it bounces like a bounce house and hurts a lot.
One thing I really liked was just how engaged and attentive fallout was throughout the entirety of the stream
Not to say the others weren’t but Fallout seemed so so interested contantly and extremely enthusiastic, aswell as requesting Byf do some lore content with Anno
Classic Fallout W
After you defeat the Herald of Finality you can hear traces of Taniks’ theme playing in the ambiance
Still we can’t know if Taniks is back from the wreckage of the Deep Stone Crypt
Thanks for the raid along. Bungie should do one themselves and be honest about when they made each part
I neeeed a raid tour 🙋 this is absolutely phenomenal!!
Great stream, really enjoy these
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the precursor city model that you pass by on the way to one of the encounters.
Byf knows red border and offers to do it while telling stories. He’s a god.
Watched half of it live and have been anxiously awaiting this vid
This was absolutely incredible
Hearing this makes me think the Winnower was the veil and the Gardner was the light embodied.
32:02 The boxes to start encounters in Vault of Glass play funky beats 🕺💃
I've been watching this video during my free time (twice in full already). I just wanna ask if you can create time stamps for different parts of lore? Thanks for creating a lore run. This is very fun to watch.
Hey Byf, I dunno if you'll ever read this but the buttons on the Witness' form on Zenith is very similar to wind instruments like a Bassoon or a clarinet, which also plays into the musical angle heavily. I haven't really heard anyone make mention of it, but it's something interesting.
And I thought the raid couldn’t get any better 🎉
damn this felt like a tour on a historical site or a museum
Late reply after watching this video for the 3rd time, when you mentioned the blood possibly being a vein i want to add that the bubbles in the blood appear to be moving i. A curcular motion creating an image that looks like DNA strands which would make sense because the witness is supposed to be embodyment of his entire species which is why he has so many faces...so maybe the swirling of the blood section is combining all of the DNA of his people....something like that lol
Love the idea. Hope to see more in the future
So underneath the environmental storytelling there's also this cautionary tale, told solely through subtext.
if the 4th encounter didnt exist i def would’ve beat this raid multiple times by now
Its not that hard brother
this collab with freakycross was entertaining af
I could imagine you and Meyalin Games both fighting to give Lore during everything.
Do we have any answers for where all of the planets that the witness took and the likelihood of them returning ?
Within the lore the significance of the lore is that it’s the lore 🤓☝️
Please do more of these it is soo cool
33:00 the context is that Cross was looking at a pic of Bunny from First descendant lmao
1:11:01 The Universe was literally 1 second from being consumed by the Final Shape, LOL!
I really want bungie to give more raid boss lore like they did for the raid bosses featured in pantheon.
"I didn't realize Mrs Frizzle was joining this raid."
This is my interpretation of the Gardener, the Winnower, the Traveler, the Witness, and the Final Shape:
The Gardener and the Winnower are like two owners of a local Chess Club.
This realization is the "First Knife."
This continued for eons, new games being set up, futile moves and counter moves, and then the Winnower ending the game by killing the players.
